I've been playing bullet-hell shmups for a few months now, and I've seen quite a number of videos of "difficult/impossble fights". However, even though I am, myself, really starting to understand advanced dodging techniques, this vide *still* makes me gape. I don't *care* if the hitbox is a single pixel - this should not be humanly possible. I salute you: you must rank among at *least* the top 10 shmup players in this world.
and people think LoL is hard.. lol warcraft 3 has so much more multitasking.. so much more skill, and in this chinese.. japanesE?game.. they actually made it hard with one unit..yeah escape maps.. indiana jones.. good! u have to look out for so many details.. great music too I'd like to play that game sometime ;o
@xtrem3rd most of these attacks are actually a random pattern + an aimed pattern (eventually multiply or vary proportions), with time your mind learns to see the pattern and thus dodge easily (for example, the reticulus plus arches can be easily avoided by just watching out for when the reticulus closes and then moving up and down through the arches). The undodgeable walls are there to force you out of safespots, just that. They're not part of the attack... if you MOVE.
@Holammer amen to that :) The good thing is that even CAVE differentiates its offer, and Futari itself has three ranks of difficulty. There are people who prefer Original (normal) mode and those like me who want the challenge of Ultra (very Hard) mode :) Long live shmups, I'd say
@Pro21xx the game itself is designed as a challenge: if you manage to beat it without dying not even a single time, this boss offers the supreme challenge. It's supposed to be a test of skills. And yes, someone actually beat it in a single continue and without dying.
@Holammer Things change my friend.. Even this games does. Classic SHMUPS are about killing enemies who shoots very few bullets but moves in such a fast motion. Hit box is big. Golden Age shmups(that sadly doesn't end up in the Western Consoles too much) are about Dodging a few hundred bullets that moves very slowly... Hit box is small. It may look shocking at your first game. But in the long shot... a shmup will be a shmup...
This is actually only the first form. There's two more forms after this. In the Mushi Futari superplay DVD, players Yusemi-SWY and Dame K.K both cleared Ultra mode on one credit.
@Evrain64 My point is that some of the attacks really ARE undodgeable. Meaning that you sustain a minimum amount of damage. And looking at this video, it would seem that this minimum damage exceeds the amount the ship can take during 1 continue at least twice.
This game is kinda famous for not being region locked like everything else Cave has released so far on the Xbox in Japan. It's also available as a plain simple PCB you can plug into your run-of-the-mill jamma arcade cab or supergun.
@SuperMetroid4567 The video. The game can be imported from PlayAsia for the 360 (it's a region free game along with a few other Cave shmups. the others are region locked.) or you can get the arcade cabinet for a few thousand dollars.
it's the challenge of it. some people (like me =D ) find enjoyment through attempting things they cannot currently do, and eventually overcoming those challenges.
Oh, I had no background knowledge about this game until recently lol. Awesome! Keep at it! My friend passed JLPT 1 with 92% through self-study...unfortunately, I'm not that gifted so I'm in Japan on a study abroad going for JLPT 2 this summer Q_Q
I have this game on XBOX360 and there is a replay of someone who did this mode without Continue. He lost no sinlge life during the whole game, did this boss here and then started the TLB (True Last Boss) and loses all lives except one. And he won. Think it was some Japanese guy. I was impressed.
That third line is "れいこちゃんは兄さまを救ったんだ" which means "Reiko saved my brother". You got the next part right though =D yea that last line sounded like "omae no taiyou..." (music starts so it pretty much mutes her out) "...shine" LOL
It's also an arcade title, so it's harder so that people will put more money in to beat the game. Most arcade games are harder than a console game so they can get that extra bit of money out of every play.
Well, "futari" can have more than one meaning. Usually its used to say how many people there are (i.e. "Kore wa futari desu", or There are two people) However, they use this to say "part 2". So "Mushihimesama Futari" pretty much means "Insect Princess 2" in a nutshell. However, some people say that "futari" is used because you can "switch" between the two characters (each with their own shooting style so I heard).
@dankuro97 It WILL lag no matter what computer you have, to make the game a little bit more "manageable", there's a in-game feature that slows the game down if there's too many bullets on-screen.
Wanna know what I love about games like these and their bosses? Its not like other games where the boss realistically seems to give you all the chances in the world to defeat them, no, these bosses are out to kill you good! They want you dead as can be, Its only up to how much skill you have to avoid the continuous death fields.
@Nintega point is in Japan arcades are meeting points, complete with cafes, fast foods and the like, you go there have a quick play and then drink something (for example in Akihabara there was a SEGA run arcade complete with a maid cafe and high-class restaurant, all in the same facility) so for japanese guys arcades are still great to go to. And they learn to play serious games.
@Hazefulify Yea, thats why japanese danmaku shooters are so scary. They paint the screen purple and say if you touch purple you die. Nearly impossible but addictingly fun XD
Well, that's why this genre is known as "Bullet hell". People who made theese games feed from players anger and despair... However, the feeling you have after completing one of them is close to an orgasm
@Sasupoika2 i dont know where is the originality on filling the stage with bullets while using a repetitive pattern that always follow the same route f.e(deathsmiles) most of touhou attacks have a random path maybe not quick sucession as cave games cave games basicly consists in fill the stage of bullets just letting you a small gap between them zun games let you more space between bullets but makes you think faster about your movement pattern
@8super8sonic8 What was unclear? Plug a game console (Playstation, Xbox, whatever) into your computer's video card, or play the game in an emulator on your computer and record with Fraps.
@Evrain64 Yeah, I know. Practice is usually all there is to it with games like these. But still, some of these attacks here just seem undodgeable, like the one at 2:50, where 90% of the screen is covered in bullets.
@1dra7 The only part of the character that can actually be hit is the little orange glowing part in the center, and the bullets themselves can be grazed a bit without actually killing you.
@LargeFG7777 It's absolutely possible to avoid those attacks. In the Black Label version, they added a second form for this boss, accessed only by beating everything else in the game without dying once, on the hardest difficulty. And people have done so. Search for "Spiritual Larsa" and you'll see what I mean.
@red244 Additionally, what has accounting got to do with typing? Accounting is nurmerical. I do not attend school. I attend collage. Collage is much harder than GCSE's in school, and I expect degrees to also be much harder next year when I go to University.
To beat this on any difficulty you need:Knowledge of Touhou on lunatic, knoledge your hitbox is smaller than what you think, and that is pretty much it...
@chickenwaffle123 Its for Xbox360 (full game).. 35$ imported from play-asia or similar site. Its *only* 35$ cause its a platinum hit in Japan now. Most of these imports cost $80-100+ on launch >
@xtrem3rd no no, hold on a second: you haven't a life bar or anything in shooters, especially in danmakus (curtain fire shmups): you have a fixed amount of lives and it's an one hit kill. Point it, you seem to think certain attacks hit because only the small, glowing circle (that is, the character itself) is vulnerable, NOT the beast they're riding. Else, danmakus would not be beatable. Only the hitbox is sensitive.
I think they forgot the point about how hard a final boss can be. A person this big [0] can go through things this small that are this close together[ ........................]
And that video by Terry Fuckwitt over there? The ten minute long one? That's played on the hardest difficulty, in which the queen fights you after you finally kill this thing. The people who made this game are nuts.
@lordslifer666 Don't make me pull arguement about Zun's originality. Some of Remilia's patterns have been taken from ESPra.de, game made by this company. And no, this is hard. Touhou normals can be completed on first try easily. This game took professional players MONTHS before they could clear it. IIRC, it took Yusemi-SWY tons of practise just to get through this boss without using continues. And Yusemi-SWY is considered better player than ISO, who has several Touhou World-records.
@xtrem3rd both FF and Mushihimesama/other CAVE games have Manabu Namiki as the composer. Starting to see the pattern here? ;) Anyways yes, in Japan anime, manga, videogames are regarded as top-tier productions and, as such, usually sport insanely high production values even when they are homemade. Just watch Touhou: would you believe it's A SINGLE MAN handling music, chara design, programming, writing and everything else?
@xtrem3rd most shooter music is awesome, and CAVE usually hires soundtrack god Manabu Namiki and his Basiscape record label; you have to play it real life to understand the insane adrenaline rush you get from such a brutal boss fight, nothing you can ever get from Halo or other Western game, you feel the "you are all-powerful, yet I WILL crush you" attitude. Plus, most bullets have their own hitbox, with an "outer rim" that is innocuous and an harmful core. You learn with time to see that.
correction: I just downloaded the soundtrack to this game and it has the character's voices as tracks. Here's what she says:"お前の代用品などいくらでも言う。。。死ね"(omae no daiyouhin[substitues] nado ikurademo iu... shine)... Sounds like she's talking to the player and the player's extra lives LOL
I could play this on the XBOX360 and indeed, a single hit kills you and the blue glowing bomb destroys all enemy shots for a short period of time. You get three of those bombs with each life. The power of continues is the only thing that will let you through...
@Evrain64 Wow. In that case, the player did a really good job. I'd never be able to pull that off. Especially with that kind of kickass music in the background. Still, some of the attacks still seem undodgeable. And considering that it's a OHKO, that's even worse.
Now that I've played DeathSmiles I finally understand what's happening when there are gaps in the attacks. Either the player is using a bomb or he's done enough damage to move the boss into the next stage of attack.
@theripper00 actuallly you can dodge this....the AoE that you can be killed in isnt the entire ship sprite. Ikaruga is, as far as I've come across, the only game where this is the case. But most shumps the area is a lot smalller....I cant tell you the # of times I've been playing Touhou 6:EoSD and thinking "how the hell did I survive that?"
That's true, but(for me, anyway) you also have your sprite being bigger as well as not really knowing what your hitbox size is, so it's easier to panic, and panicking is always bad in a danmaku game.
Yukari's hard just because it's a really long fight. :p I've never been lucky enough to get my hands on Mushi Futari yet, but I can rarely get past the third stage in the original Mushihimesama (Maniac) without continuing. Note: The PS2 port of Mushihimesama comes with 'Arrange' mode, in which it's a cross between Maniac and Ultra difficulty, and you can change your shots, as well as you have 6 options instead of four. I personally think it's more fun, but you can't continue in that mode.
@OilyTower I'm serious... I find this games tougher than Touhou Lunatic... My friends are even surprised when I run through a new touhou game they let me tried in lunatic, and then they told me that I was the only person that went that far without getting the Power Ups(P). And I'm like meh... cant tell the same with Mushihimesama( the prequel of this game ) that thing in Ultra is just... wow...
Last boss continue costs $100 XD
Thank you for the information! Don't worry, you helped as much as you could and I'm very grateful for that =D
It's insane.
I've been playing bullet-hell shmups for a few months now, and I've seen quite a number of videos of "difficult/impossble fights".

Beating this boss means bragging rights forever.
i like to see someone run this without continue or bomb
@xtrem3rd most of these attacks are actually a random pattern + an aimed pattern (eventually multiply or vary proportions), with time your mind learns to see the pattern and thus dodge easily (for example, the reticulus plus arches can be easily avoided by just watching out for when the reticulus closes and then moving up and down through the arches). The undodgeable walls are there to force you out of safespots, just that. They're not part of the attack... if you MOVE.
Even though this boss is simply impossible to understand, I did enjoy looking at the artistic patterns that took so many of this person's coins.
@Holammer amen to that :) The good thing is that even CAVE differentiates its offer, and Futari itself has three ranks of difficulty. There are people who prefer Original (normal) mode and those like me who want the challenge of Ultra (very Hard) mode :) Long live shmups, I'd say

It may look shocking at your first game. But in the long shot... a shmup will be a shmup...
The bullet patterns are strangely mesmerizing...
For anyone that's wondering why he stopped at the end, he was trying to learn the bullet pattern so he could dodge it for the next time he plays
This is actually only the first form. There's two more forms after this.
In the Mushi Futari superplay DVD, players Yusemi-SWY and Dame K.K both cleared Ultra mode on one credit.
@xtrem3rd "Last Boss" on the Mushihime-sama Futari OST I believe. Nice mix of orchestral rock and hardcore techno rhythms.
"A firework display being sick" - Charlie Brooker on schmups.
@Evrain64 My point is that some of the attacks really ARE undodgeable. Meaning that you sustain a minimum amount of damage. And looking at this video, it would seem that this minimum damage exceeds the amount the ship can take during 1 continue at least twice.

Haha, you and me both! I didn't even expect it to be good when I began, it's just that as the comment chain went on, it was like a build-up.
@SuperMetroid4567 The video. The game can be imported from PlayAsia for the 360 (it's a region free game along with a few other Cave shmups. the others are region locked.) or you can get the arcade cabinet for a few thousand dollars.
you're too good for this planet.
OMFG!!!!!! The Number of bullet is just INSANE!!! can't pass this boss without a million continues O.O
@TotalMadnesification Correction, huge amounts of people have beat this boss. He said that it's nearly impossible without continues.
@Bigjoiya1 If i remeber correctly , it's Cave who made this games. And they have a huge collection on shooters
it's the challenge of it. some people (like me =D ) find enjoyment through attempting things they cannot currently do, and eventually overcoming those challenges.
Oh, I had no background knowledge about this game until recently lol.
Awesome! Keep at it! My friend passed JLPT 1 with 92% through self-study...unfortunately, I'm not that gifted so I'm in Japan on a study abroad going for JLPT 2 this summer Q_Q
I cant even process how good his reactions and his precision would have to be to do this game without continues.
I have this game on XBOX360 and there is a replay of someone who did this mode without Continue. He lost no sinlge life during the whole game, did this boss here and then started the TLB (True Last Boss) and loses all lives except one. And he won. Think it was some Japanese guy. I was impressed.

yea that last line sounded like
"omae no taiyou..." (music starts so it pretty much mutes her out) "...shine" LOL
In most Bullet Hell games, firing off one of your special bombs will either remove all bullets from the screen or render you temporarily invulnerable.
It's also an arcade title, so it's harder so that people will put more money in to beat the game. Most arcade games are harder than a console game so they can get that extra bit of money out of every play.

Wow! Love the music, one heck of a psychotic boss... I MUST try this lol. What platform is it on? Oh and she sounds pissed... REAL pissed.
Wanna know what I love about games like these and their bosses? Its not like other games where the boss realistically seems to give you all the chances in the world to defeat them, no, these bosses are out to kill you good! They want you dead as can be, Its only up to how much skill you have to avoid the continuous death fields.
BGM perfectly matches with the intensity of this boss!
so... many... bullets... even lagged because there was so many...
Mushihimesama means "Insect Princes"; note how most of the enemies and bosses are forms of some sort of "insect".
@FreakUndead : on Xbox360. It only came out in Japan, but the disc is region free, so it'll play on any 360.
Keep your eyes on the shining circle, that's the hitbox.
"What is this? I can still see the background behind your bullets? Unacceptable! MOAR DAKKA!"
god i give big props to people who can control 2 ships
like the people who play ikaruga on hard with both people
mad props.
@Hazefulify Yea, thats why japanese danmaku shooters are so scary. They paint the screen purple and say if you touch purple you die. Nearly impossible but addictingly fun XD
"We all have life. Some do what they enjoy to do, some seek for acception from others by doing things that are said to be life."
Well, that's why this genre is known as "Bullet hell". People who made theese games feed from players anger and despair...

America: Congratulations! You beat the game!
Japan: Tutorial Complete!
In America: congratulations you beat the game!!! Japan: End of Tutorial

zun games let you more space between bullets but makes you think faster about your movement pattern
Yes, someone can say "unfair!"
Your weapons are crazy, but the boss' weapons are.. Yeah, screen-filling.
@ThePageofCups Ahhh thanks a lot. this was very helpful.
@thecaveman7 That was on a different mode. He did the GOD MODE final boss. Apparently this Ultra mode boss is significantly harder.
too insane, and avoidance that almost fills the entire scene of attacks, just as if it had become a mosquito or something even smaller
Be thankful for that.
@8super8sonic8 What was unclear? Plug a game console (Playstation, Xbox, whatever) into your computer's video card, or play the game in an emulator on your computer and record with Fraps.
@1dra7 In these sort of games, the players hitbox is smaller to allow you to weave through fields of bullets like this :)
@Evrain64 Yeah, I know. Practice is usually all there is to it with games like these. But still, some of these attacks here just seem undodgeable, like the one at 2:50, where 90% of the screen is covered in bullets.

i feel like im on the verge of having a seizure or panic attack whenever I watch this
fuuukkkkkk the amount of bullets that boss unleashes is unreal....
@red244 Additionally, what has accounting got to do with typing? Accounting is nurmerical. I do not attend school. I attend collage. Collage is much harder than GCSE's in school, and I expect degrees to also be much harder next year when I go to University.
Actually, the original player who did that video was Harist if I remember right. He has the video on youtube.
Whoever's piloting that ship must love that cat. O_O
To beat this on any difficulty you need:Knowledge of Touhou on lunatic, knoledge your hitbox is smaller than what you think, and that is pretty much it...

No one except Chuck Norris.

Only the hitbox is sensitive.
this game is one of the entrance questions on the "becoming a japanese citizen" exam
Adventure starts here. Supply yourself, bring extra water.
Somewhere right now a planet is being blown to smitherings for no apparent reason
I think they forgot the point about how hard a final boss can be. A person this big [0] can go through things this small that are this close together[ ........................]
This is just sick! :S
And that video by Terry Fuckwitt over there? The ten minute long one? That's played on the hardest difficulty, in which the queen fights you after you finally kill this thing. The people who made this game are nuts.

@Dazreiello
No skill involved. You can NOT dodge an Entire screen of bullets. All this is required to beat this boss is 6 dollars in quarters.
@xtrem3rd both FF and Mushihimesama/other CAVE games have Manabu Namiki as the composer. Starting to see the pattern here? ;)

I like how the last boss is some blatently angry japanese house wife with a dominant streak.
correction: I just downloaded the soundtrack to this game and it has the character's voices as tracks.
Here's what she says:"お前の代用品などいくらでも言う。。。死ね"(omae no daiyouhin[substitues] nado ikurademo iu... shine)... Sounds like she's talking to the player and the player's extra lives LOL
that is probably at the top of most impossible things to do in the world, even more than becoming the hulk
it's playable once you get into it really, but the game is generous enough to let the bullets hit the cockpit instead of the ship as a whole.
I could play this on the XBOX360 and indeed, a single hit kills you and the blue glowing bomb destroys all enemy shots for a short period of time. You get three of those bombs with each life. The power of continues is the only thing that will let you through...
If you look closely... he is actually dodging "those purple things".
it's actually a lot more fun than you would think
@Evrain64 Wow. In that case, the player did a really good job. I'd never be able to pull that off. Especially with that kind of kickass music in the background. Still, some of the attacks still seem undodgeable. And considering that it's a OHKO, that's even worse.
Oh yes, surely they are, though who could honestly say we don't love them for it? ;)
they always keep all the sweet games in Japan... us westerners are missing out on stuff like this.
Finally a game that I can play. I like shmups that I can Dodge alot of bullets.
The player's ship may be big, but only one pixel of the whole thing is vulnerable to hits.
Now that I've played DeathSmiles I finally understand what's happening when there are gaps in the attacks. Either the player is using a bomb or he's done enough damage to move the boss into the next stage of attack.
Shoot'em up bosses, aka "Put a brick on the trigger and TRY not to touch anything!"
This is like fighting flame hyenard! Having to dodge multiple shots, all the while he is screaming at you.
Yukari's hard just because it's a really long fight. :p
I've never been lucky enough to get my hands on Mushi Futari yet, but I can rarely get past the third stage in the original Mushihimesama (Maniac) without continuing.
Note: The PS2 port of Mushihimesama comes with 'Arrange' mode, in which it's a cross between Maniac and Ultra difficulty, and you can change your shots, as well as you have 6 options instead of four. I personally think it's more fun, but you can't continue in that mode.
Thing about this game, you are required to die to clear this game according to the no continue rule.
@OilyTower I'm serious... I find this games tougher than Touhou Lunatic...
My friends are even surprised when I run through a new touhou game they let me tried in lunatic, and then they told me that I was the only person that went that far without getting the Power Ups(P). And I'm like meh... cant tell the same with Mushihimesama( the prequel of this game ) that thing in Ultra is just... wow...
