The fire thing is interesting. The only way to be set on fire in Jet Set Radio was to be hit by the flamethrower of one of the Golden Rhino's assassins in one of the later levels, so maybe the assassins would've made a return in JSRF at one point.
yeah that gouji's ancestors thing was definitely supposed to be more important. if JSRF was finished there would probably be a subplot about economic disparity in rokakku-dai heights/kibagoaka hill. corn refers to the fortified residential district as a ghetto. what kind of social commentary on urban development could the game have been?
Interesting video dude. To me, this game is just extremely good, i may be fanboying, but i really think this game is amazing at every level, one of the best, if not the best game i ever played. It deserved a continuation of the series, the potential was enormous. One the other hand, this allows this game to become even more classic.
***** As much as I adore it myself, I think it entirely fell flat when it came to having any kind of coherent story (namely the first three chapters having little to nothing to do with the rest of the story and Gouji's tower appearing out of nowhere with no justification of any sort and being way further from reality than most of what you've seen so far) and having any real kind of characterization (most characters got a couple of lines at best, aside from what you could see in the Garage, which was nice but didn't add much), but I think that the rest of the game makes up for it well enough. The gameplay's too fun to really be too concerned anyways, I guess. JSRF, both as a game and as a series, had a great deal of untapped potential to me. All I really ask for as an improvement is some attention being given to the story and characters, at least on par with JSR. I'm not expecting a new game at any point, but it was nice enough, I suppose.
***** For some reason I only got the notification for your comment now, a month later lool Interesting, I had never thought about those flaws in the Story plot. And I am a person who cares deeply for the Story in games. But it seems that the focus of the gameplay was so powerful that you could not even see the flaws on the story lool I have never played JSR for the Dreamcast, but for the videos I have seen, the gameplay doesn't seem nearly as fun as JSRF, personally. I can't say anything about the story of the original JSR, cuz I honestly don't know what the plot is. The series did have untapped potential, and it was really sad that it stopped. We were having a discussion about Blinx and also Sonic a few weeks back on another comment section of one of your videos, and I am sad that both JSR and Blinx were series that could not move further. But then again, it gives them a more special status.
***** Yeah, RUclips's comment notifications pretty much died for over a month. I noticed that they seemed to be fixed today, at least, so I don't have to check my community tab for comments anymore. I will say that Jet Set Radio has a more coherent plot, but plot is still far from the game's focus or highlight. I do prefer JSRF's gameplay, but mainly because it's so much smoother - more speed, bigger air, much more forgiving, and way smoother controls. Some jumps onto rails get really frustrating in JSR because of the camera and incredibly stiff/slow movement, but it still has its own charm with how it's actually challenging with keisatsu that constantly pursue and attack you without letting you take them all out. I seem to have a knack for finding series like this. Some kind of had their run - I'm currently LPing Panzer Dragoon Orta, an epilogue of sorts to a decent rail shooter series that was pretty much entirely forgotten (despite the final game being quite amazing in its own right). That ran its course, though - Klonoa, on the other hand, was an especially tragic case for me (amusingly fitting, given how the tragic nature of the series). The series had a good few games, and it still had an official ongoing comic series when I picked it up. Said comic series put up its final panels one week afterwards, and the series has pretty much been officially dead ever since. I kind of agree with the idea that it's better for something to die than to turn to crap, but seeing something like Klonoa, which I found greatly similar charm in to BLiNX (but with more enjoyable story and gameplay, namely the former), die off when it clearly wasn't meant to yet is still quite saddening. The final console game in the series even had something of a cliffhanger that was never addressed. Frankly, I'm used to any series I like being cut off and dead. I'd love some, such as Klonoa, to have the closure of at least being "finished," but I realize that it's not really something that happens often. At least BLiNX and Jet Set Radio didn't leave anything else unfinished.
***** Yeah, I see. I also believe that people might have their opinions shaped by what they grew up with probably. Like me, I grew up with JSRF and never played JSR, so I guess it's safe to say that it's normal if I don't find the charm and beauty that I found in JSRF. Same the other way around. But the person who has played both games back then will surely have the most valuable opinion. Not sure if you agree with this? Yes, in our previous conversation you mentioned these dead series games, you actually said that you were an old school player and not really into the new generation. But I think it's preety cool, because these old games have a charm that the new generation doesn't have. But that is just normal, technology evolved, things change, it's going to be different technically, but on a personal level, everyone can find charm and beauty in whatever they want. In any case, yes, it was far too early to finish series like Blinx and Klonoa, and of course, JSR. But it's done now. They can actually create new games which could be heavily influenced by some of these, and that's cool, it would revive the spirit of these games, however i must admit, that such thing would not interest me nearly as much as the revival of these original series. Because they have the sentimental value to it.
***** Yeah, I entirely realize how much nostalgia has affected my thoughts on some games. The thing is, though, that I generally seem to realize it - I don't think that BLiNX was exceptionally good or that Jet Set Radio Future was one of the best games I've played despite still being incredibly fond of it. I'd definitely say that I think JSRF turned out a bit better, though. At the same time, though, I see games like Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil and Panzer Dragoon Orta from around the same time period and adore them without the nostalgia factor. I actually consider them incredibly good games, and only by their own merits. It's peculiar having separate sense of "what I like" and "good." I honestly don't think I'd want new titles in most of these dead series, though. Like you said, newer stuff has a different feel to it, and I'd have a really hard time expecting a new instalment to manage to recreate the old one's notabilities. It also helps, though, that some games that I've liked so much were one-offs or simply didn't intend to continue - one game that I've LP'd, Graffiti Kingdom, doesn't seem like it ever had any plans of any sequel or anything of the sort. I'm sad to see that its active fanbase effectively comprises of one person (it's fun seeing them everywhere you look for the game), but I wouldn't expect it to continue. It just kind of stayed where it was in the past and died off. It was, though, a spiritual successor to yet another game, Magic Pengel (it was considered a direct sequel in Japan, but it has no actual connection in story, setting, or even most of the gameplay), which I plan to LP within the next few weeks. In fact, I had the disc in my hand as I read your comment. It's bittersweet, basically. There are some realities to accept in liking this sorts of games, but there's definitely a lot to be found that you can love even without nostalgia adding to your enjoyment.
With the clips that reference 99th Street as the place being "on fire", it might be that Highway Zero and Skyscraper District might have originally been combined with 99th street to form one huge section of Tokyo-to early in development. I think this because the way to get to both of those sections of JSRF is through 99th Street along the highway. It might have originally all been connected without the loading zones between the two, and you might have been able to just use the road up top to traverse between the areas. That could have been why DJ Prof. K called those zones 99th Street when talking about them being "up in flames" because early in development, that all WAS 99th Street. They probably cut them all into separate sections because with JSRF, it loads all of the map at once, if I'm not mistaken. Cutting 99th Street up into 99th Street, Skyscraper District and Highway Zero might have been to reduce on the loading time to get into 99th Street area. Plus, having to deal with all of that neon all at once might have been too strenuous for the Xbox to handle, seeing as the 360 can barely handle 99th street as it is. Anyway, just a stupid little theory on a very cool video that's 4 years old and no one will probably see this lol
I'm not so sure that open world is the way to go. I like how the levels were broken up. Each had their own unique feel and style. Each level was given their own unique color scheme. Can you imagine a 99th street that isn't neon-pink or a highway zero that isn't electric green? Imagine how hard it would be from a level designer's perspective to blend those themes from place to place. Also imagine how hard it would be to make the entire area between the sewage facility and pharaoh park into one giant level.
I remember hearing Billy Browns voice when he was on Sons of Anarchy and thought he sound like DJPK. Didn’t look it up til years later and found out it was actually Billy Brown lol

***** Yea i remember hearing that it sold poorly. Well i guess all we can really do is keep what little community we have alive and hope one day we get something from Sega XD
Seems like their was an extra chapter which would make sense given that there are only 9 in game 10 would make more sense wonder if it existed why it was cut was it problems with the Xbox being able to handle 99th Street being on fire for example or maybe they just didn't have the time
My disagreement with the arbitrary number of chapters aside, you do realize that Professor K says the same about Highway Zero being engulfed in flames, too, right? It's where you fight one of the two special Golden Rhinos (the one with the flamethrower), and the area still isn't on fire. I'm quite sure that they just relocated that fight from 99th Street to Highway Zero.
