Catch and Cook Saltwater Catfish | Trash Fish Taste Test

  • Today's adventure made me a little nervous. I set out in search of the biggest trash fish known to man, the saltwater cat. I am a believer that some fish get a bad reputation as far as table fair is concerned. Who's to know if the rumors are true if no one tries them. Watch me eat a saltwater catfish in ep:3 of fishing taste test.

    I am 59 and grew up catching these and throwing them all back because everyone said you cant eat them, no one that we ask had actually tried them they just all said we have heard that they are not good to eat. I talked to a Cajun at a restaurant in port O'Connor TX and he served up a turkey platter of these to his buddy's without telling them what it was and they loved them. So the next time i caught some i fried them up and they are great. You do have to be careful with the spines but it is worth it.

    Hardhead catfish (Ariopsis felis) and gafftopsail catfish (Bagre marinus) have slightly different tastes. But I love them both. The key is to cut the gills right when you catch them ( Bleed out). Then they taste much better. I first had salt cats in 1976 and would never turn down a plate of them. So much better then the fresh water catfish.

    I have always felt that hard heads get a bad rap, as well as gaftops. When I lived in Florida people would look at me funny if I kept a gaftop, but I would never keep a hard head... we eat the hell out of gaftops here in Texas. They're like any other bottom feeder fish like reds, black drum etc... They eat shrimp, crabs, and other similar fish. No reason they should taste bad at all.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 7 лет назад +7

      The thing is, catfish are not really bottom feeders. Yes, they will eat things they find on the bottom, but so will most fish. Catfish, freshwater or saltwater, feed on the surface as often as they feed on the bottom. They feed at every depth. Wherever they find food, the eat it. People think they're bottom feeders, so they fish for them on the bottom, but I've caught more, and bigger ones, on the surface because that's where I often fish for them intentionally.

    20 years ago I worked at the Miami Seaport and fishermen were catching grunts. They cut em up and used them for bait. I had occasion to spend a weekend in the Keys and the cleaning woman at the residence from Cuba was catching them in the canal and preparing them for lunch. In Cuba she said we eat everything we catch. She breaded it and fried it and it tasted just like snapper

    I've eaten saltwater catfish in Texas, and they tasted fine. You are right about avoiding getting stabbed with the spines. It's like being stuck with hot needles, much worse than being stabbed by spines from a freshwater catfish.

    Am new to fishing. Mostly on piers. A month ago got me 3 decent sized hardheads. Friend gave me his and another lady gave me hers. I fillet them all. Still have them in the freezer. Yesterday caught me another and fillet it today. Trying gather more to make a meal. Gonna fry them up soon. I used to eat catfish back in high school when parents would buy at a local store. Deep fried them in cornbread. Taste real good.

  • @KeyWestKayakFishing
    @KeyWestKayakFishing 7 лет назад +36

    I don't think frying it up with all that seasoning and coating gives a real indication on the flavor of anything. Try these tests with maybe the minimal of prep like perhaps a little oil on a pan (so it doesn't stick) and a little salt and pepper. That way you can actually taste the fish. I don't think there are that many fish that have a distinct odd/bad flavor especially when they are fresh caught and served right away. Glad the lessening of the stigma on "trash fish" that you are doing.
    How about try the baits, Pilchards, Ballyihoo, Herring, Finger Mullet, etc. Not sure what you guys have up there.

    • @AnglerUpTv
      @AnglerUpTv  7 лет назад +20

      Honestly I wanted to cook it similar to how they would prepare it in a restaurant. I have never had nor seen catfish prepared any other way but fried. I didn't even deep fry it. My fish was lightly battered and fried in a small amount of olive oil. Pan frying in light olive oil allows you to still taste plenty of the fish flavor.

    Nothing wrong with them. I caught them until I knew I wouldn’t want to clean anymore, took them home and was skeptical, but I did the old foil pack on the grill with Cajun seasons and butter. Ate them along side pork chops and baked potato. Not a damn thing wrong with hardhead catfish. I did soak them in water and lime over night, but I feel like I wouldn’t have even needed to do that.

    I have caught 100s of these in dubai specially in one area it is almost impossible to avoid them. they bite your bait before any other fish can get to it. and they are cnsidered trash. I have thrown them all back and never even dared to try it. and I'm still not convinced to try it. on the contrary I have eaten plenty of freshwater cats back home in kashmir. they are good. not the best but good enough with not much bones.

    This works very well, and have blind taste tested it with others and none have picked what it was and all bar none loved it!. Give it try.

    Tips for Hardheads and Sailcats: THOROUGHLY BLEED the fish immediately (if done properly there will be no blood when filleting the fish), SOAK in milk overnight. Great for tacos or blackened. Note: for deep frying, pre-soak in buttermilk before breading for extra crispy fish. C’mon back and thank me later!

    Interesting 🤔. I've tried many different fish and have always gone in with an open mind. My saltwater catfish taste test was the exact opposite of yours. The flesh was much pinker and the cooked meat was tough. Saltwater catfish, ladyfish, and barracuda are the only three I can say I thought truly tasted terrible. This makes me want to give the catfish one more chance.

    I dont know about saltwater cat's, but i know freshwater catfish aren't poisonous. Regardless, i love your videos man. I like to see other fishermen who actually eat fish instead of being the whole mushy mushy "catch and release is the way to preserve fisheries." I know you shouldn't harvest the entire fishery, but a few fish in the fryer isn't going to destroy a fishery, unless there's only a few fish in the system haha.

    I grew up on Freshwater Catfish, It can be really "muddy" tasting, especially the larger fish. The smaller, younger ones are less so....I would assume the Saltwater catfish would be a little "cleaner" due to not feeding on a muddy bottom so much as the stained muddy bottom lakes.

    i can personally vouch for the overall opinion of the video. in all ways, the saltwater catfish is almost the same as the freshwater counterparts; just as big of a pain to clean and similar taste too

    Saltwater catfish are delicious as long as the blood vein along their sides is scraped off. By filleting, he removed that blood vein.

    Cool vid. I'm a beginner fisher. What kind of catfish was that and do you usually put them down (euthanize) them before you snip and cut?

    In Malaysia, these Salt Water Catfishes (Ikan Duri & Ikan Belukang) are cooked in traditional recipe "Asam Pedas"...
    Try google searched the "Asam Pedas Ikan Duri Recipe" and "Asam Pedas Ikan Belukang Recipe" and enjoy the Malaysian style of dishes.
    -Just a suggestion.

    Gaftops are so overfished here in SC, that it's illegal to keep one. It's been 10 years or better since I caught one

    It seemed like your fish was not covered with the slime that we get down near St. Pete. Maybe that is why yours tasted better.

    A true fish taste test should be made without bread crumb, just the fillet and salt
