if you are an introvert and watching this video, please DO NOT listen to him. I have been an assistant for 2 years. Before assisting, I was involved with many dental activities and met many dentists as well. I helped a dentist for a week ( to cover for his assistant) and he told me that he was an introvert in dental school. He'd been doing dentistry for 15 years when I met him and I considered him as an extrovert. He said that dentistry changed his life. If you're passionate about dentistry and know you can make a difference in someone's life by improving their oral health, introvert and extrovert doesn't play much of role here. PLEASE, don't get discourage by a first year student or any other dental students who has not started their journey as a real dentist at all. You'll find a way to cope, as many other introvert dentists have done it.
If you watched the whole video I say that I'm an introvert myself. I'm not at all trying to discourage anyone from going into dentistry as a career. I want to give a heads up to those who may not be aware that the profession requires a high level of social interaction. I believe anyone can be successful despite their personality. However, if you are an introvert, you will need to eventually become comfortable with a lot of patient and staff communication.
Sound's like you know a ton.
Rose Asemanie But you didn't go to dental school and you're not a dentist...
I don't want to discourage introverts either, but to be realistic you 100% need to have or develop people skills. You are taking care of human beings, how can you be a good dentist if you don't like being around people.
Rose Asemanie Also most introverts probably just say they are introvert only because they don't fit into the "extrovert" category. You don't have to be one or the other. There are so many levels of in-between. People need to stop using this dichotomy.
This was interesting. I think about becoming a dentist , even though I am an introvert. But to be honest, I don't think people should immediately give up their dream because of that
Neither do I! I consider myself pretty introverted and I love dental school :)
No but you're going to struggle as I did. Fake it till you make it. That's my advice. Make friends, talk and smile to some people since day 1. The first year it is decisive. Good luck
As I approach my 30th year as a dentist, you missed the biggest trait you need to survive dental school. You have to be good with your hands and be artistic. In the first year of dental school, it was common to loose about 20 students because they don’t have the skills to work with their hands as a dentist. You also have to have the ability to think in 3 dimensional. Dental school 30 years ago was much harder because we had to do a lot more lab work. I have talked to several dental school professors (classmates) and they say today’s students feel that it is owed to them, and don’t want to put in the time or effort. Dental school is a test to see if you have the mental ability to work with your hands in small places where a open margin of a crown is a failure. Once you start working on patients, you will be put to the test to prep a crown on an upper molar (even on a 3rd molar) and you will be working in areas where it will be very hard to see. That’s where you ability to think in 3 dimensions will be an asset. At the same time you will have to deal with the emotions of the patient. It takes a special person to be a dentist. You have to have the nerves of steel, think fast, and have the artistic skills to make restorations that are perfect. You can never settle for “good enough”. If you have that attitude, you don’t have the heart to be a dentist. At the same time, you have to be GENTLE and soft touch and always think about the comfort of the patient.
This actually makes me feel better about being a dentist. I've been an artist since birth, but didnt care to be an artist as a profession. Been more interested in healthcare, science, and tech. Thank you for the insightful comment. I'm a predental, and If I get in, I want to do my best and not expect anything to be handed to me.
I wish I read this comment years ago before getting into dental college and reconsider the decision.I am miserable in college cause I don't really have those handskills and manual dexterity.
Why don’t they take artists then ? They just focus on your chem , bio and maths grades ! . I’m not that good with arts or my hands and I got in . Kinda scared honestly.
Queen of Dark How have you done? I am a highschool student who wants to be an orthodontist, I have pretty bad hand writing and drawing skills
Zander R I haven’t started yet . But I asked and it is not important to be good with your hands, they’ll teach all the skills from zero ,once you get in , so you’ll be able to improve , the more you practice ✨
I'd like to add some more important things :
1. You have to be smart (it's not always easy to find the right diagnosis and treatment plan )
2. You have to be practical ( you don't always have the right instrument by your side, so you have to improvise with another one)
3. You need to have imagination to visualize the final work , or to guess what the best option would be .
4. You must have a great memory and lots of patience...Pharmacology isn't a joke .
5. You need to be determined and have lots of confidence .
6. Last be not least , you must have a " strong stomach "...you'll see blood , pus and other gross things.
I didn't study in groups , actually I hated the idea , because not everyone has the same study methods and this didn't put me behind , in fact i did pretty well, so I wouldn't say that introverts aren't suited for DS because of this reason...but more because as a dentist you work with people and if you aren't good at communicating with them , it might be a problem.
sounds good. Good thing i have an iq of 300 and I have visualize/have photographic memory and patience. Ill go to dental school
what if you feel like you aren’t smart enough?
@@eskg12 I personally hate the word 'smart'. Everyone has hidden potential to do well. The so called "naturally gifted" individuals will fail in intense healthcare fields such as medical/dental if they rely on their innate intellectual abilities; instead, the little guy with less stellar grades that work hard is going to excel in this field of study.
Why not try to befriend those classmates that aren't doing so well? They might just need a push. I'm usually very introverted and won't go out of my way to talk to someone unless I have to. A person like you spurring a relationship would make me have to.
Mikeyb from my experience that almost never happens unfortunately
Yeah it almost feels as though this guy is judging those classmates.. pretty condescending
never happens and not enough time
I completely get what you're going through! I'm at UCLA SOD and it's also been a grind. Hang in there, you've got this!
hey! i'm so happy i came across your videos! i am 26 years old and changing my career path to dental. i will be working on getting my dental assistant degree first before dental hygienist. I actually start classes next week.. thanks for the tips! i'll check in often to see your process.. :D
Hey how has your first year in dentistry been? Hard? Doable? What did it feel like?
So glad I found your channel! Im at undergrad and I was so sure to go to medical school. But now I want to switch to dental! Im so interested in it now and your videos are so helpful and you give such great advice! 👍
Thank you for making these vids! I know it’s not easy given the schedule in dental school but you are doing a brilliant job here...keep it up
I think a lot of you guys are misinterpreting his point on being an introvert. Dental school is going to be tougher if you don't have connections and a strong social support. Plus being a dentist is going to be hard, if you don't like interacting with people. One of my faculties once told me a story of a student who was on the top of her class, but quit dental school in D4 because she couldn't deal with patients. You need to either have or develop people skills, otherwise this job aint the best for you. You, your patients, and your staff will suffer. If you like dentistry, and the art of it, but hate people... consider being a lab tech!
Agreed! That was spot on exactly with what he was trying to say! 👍
I can't agree more
Shar Maple Well duh if you don’t have the ability to talk to patients you’re not going to make it let alone the patients are your income.
lol lab tech.... from dental school to lab tech... yeah I'm sure people will take your advice...
Dental Lab techs make like $15/hour here if that lol
Thank you for sharing! ❤️❤️ I'm a current undergrad pre dental student and this just made me more excited. I can't wait to form life long relationships with my peers.
It's such a fun experience. Challenging for sure, but definitely the coolest thing I've done in my life
Tiara Ruiz
Hey tiara, I was wondering how long it took/will take to become a dentist? And are u in any dental programs?
On the Mesial Lingual cusp of tooth #3 and #14 is a 5th cusp called the cusp of Carabellie. This is your land mark to tell the difference between your maxillary molars! Hope it helps!
Yea I guess I didn't take that into account.. Thought Carabellie was the norm haha weird it's only 20 teeth on the test too.. is it JUST molars and premolars? Cause in that case I think size is the easiest efficient way to tell.. for maxillary molars anyways not the pres. I mean if they are just on a table and you have to pick it up and say this is a maxillary 1st molar, 2nd pre molar ect. Can you pick up 2 and compare them?> Sorry I have a degree in dental assisting and have decided to go back to school to work towards dentistry and I'm genuinely curious! How did you end up doing on this exam? Also I think your doing a really great job so far! I will most definitely be following you along your journey, you should be graduating around when I am applying to schools!
Pillow Pants I have a fifth cusp in a second molar. So, it doesn’t always apply in real life.
I think the size of the DL cusp is a good clue. Plus, second molars resemble third molars and are sometimes heart shaped.
Lol I remember this
Cusp of Carabellie also can exist in maxillary 2nd molars. Size of DL and the furcation of the roots are the best ways to distinguish the first and second maxillary molars (when you do tooth id exam, you can see the roots too). Btw it is not the maxillary molars that are the most difficult, it is the maxillary premolars, the maxillary 2nd premolars are very hard to distinguish between #4 and #13.
I came across to ur channel! Love your videos!! Keep posting Dr. Trevor! I’m a dental student here in the Philippines 😊
just stumbled upon your video yesterday. just wanna say :- I have been through what you are going through. I graduated many years ago from dental school. just keep your eye on the prize:- life after getting your degree is GOOD. IN EVERY MANNER. RESPECT, MONEY, EVERYTHING.
I really want to go into dentistry but many people tell me that i’m not smart enough and sometimes I feel like i’m not so smart. Do you think I should go into it?
How much debt did you came out with?
The crucial at home wax-up! I so wish I had the portable torch, PDM got heat induction units which are pretty cool but we can't take them home. Isn't it crazy that we're already halfway through the semester 🙊
Bro you have to be interested in dental stuff and really want it and you don’t really seem like you are...
get into dental school and let's see you do better
I would have come over to those who you described “staying in a corner “ and make friends with them, introducing myself, introducing them to the group, make them feel at ease and welcomed. together we can all excel in dental school.
Very insightful video, great job man!
That’s super good advice I like it a lot!! I have a hard time learning subjects fast enough and also I have a difficult time keeping and making friends with people and I have visual spatial problems so I would never make a good dentist
Im in the first year of dental school and it is SO interesting to see how you've been managing. Now I know what to expect at least
Good luck! Have fun with NERB. If you think those classes are tough wait till you need to get a license.
Hi my question is what kind of things did you do for volunteer work and what not to put on your resume when applying?!
do you really use flashcards to study? I figured there would be so much material during a dental school exam that it would take forever to make.
Hisham Abughoush I tried flash cards, but there was so much material I never made them again!
Quizlet
flashcards should not be used as the primary source of learning because it misses so much context. If it's fact based and hard to remember, use flashcards.
@@PHILLYMEDIC69 how do you recommend studying?
Love the vlogs & authenticity
Very true!!! As of this day, my classmates have become my friends for life.
Awesome video advice! I do have some questions though: is it tough to maintain a job while in dental school? How much extra time should be spent at a job rather than studying or in class?
This was a great video and i Subscribed. I am a Junior in high school and just trying to find a career to stick too. Quick question, would this career be the same concept of pediatric dentistry?
We took that same test (the one you referenced at the beginning of the video) in dental hygiene school! They tapped the roots of the teeth so we couldn’t tell! And yessss the maxillary were the hardest
Great advice! What is the hardest part of dental school?
I took a class in hs to become a certified dental assistant. It was so much fun because they straight taught us about teeth numbers, how to make impressions, even suturing. So I was like maybe a dentist. But I gave up on dental cause the prerequisite classes are killing me. I have no time. I can’t even make it to the gym. I got depressed. Best of luck dude!
Though introverts like alone time they are able to talk to people. You may be mistaking people with social anxiety. Introverts just get their energy from spending time alone just like extroverts gain energy from people around them
@Rich 91 It's true though. Introverts don't have problem talking with people but it could be the social anxiety that's acting as a potential barrier.
Loved the video! Is there any way you could answer a question I have based on living expenses. I was just wondering how are you paying those expenses and while not being able to hold a job in Dental school?
hey my name is caroline and I want to attend dental school when I finish high school, I just wanted to ask you if you could send me a few starting presentations or something that would hepl me to get into dental school cause im from Europe (cz) and its pretty hard here so I want to be prepared thak you!
Nice video! One question... what did you major in for undergrad?
im an introvert but i get along with people i share a common interest with...
#2 very true, it's not an introvert's world. I'd also add, don't be a perfectionist, because dentistry has many subjective elements that will drive you nuts. Doing something perfect or even close to it often depends on who's looking at it.
I disagree. Patients are paying not for only a healthy mouth, but also a cosmetic look, even if they do not have perfect teeth. You don't just slap in a filling or seat a crown without regard to what it looks like. That is poor dentistry. Dentistry is all about aiming for perfection.
Advice for becoming a dentist at age 49? Can I pay back student loans .....I thought I would work every Sat at 800- 1000 per day and use that money for student debt....What is the average pay because I see some salary 150k and 225 k and 325 k and 100k in NJ?
Hi Trevor,
I was wondering if taking math (calculus/functions) in undergrad is mandatory for dental school? Would I struggle enormously if I didn't take it?
Calculus is a requirement to take physics both of which are required to apply to dental school. Your competitors for available seats in dental school often take a much heavier course to build up their resumes.Hit the ground running and get A's. Your dental school Peers are often super smart. You will be humbled.
Also, what kind of reputation do dental surgeons get?
Just reading these comments I’m not a very smart person but work hard for good grades. Things don’t just come easy to understand for me... but I’m visual, I’m artistic... Dental is hands on and I want to go to dental school. I’m very young but feeling discouraged because I have a daughter and no family help.
I can’t wait for dental school tbh dentistry is my passion I know this because whenever I think about dentistry I get exited because it sounds so fun and friendly I can also help people and love helping people. I so want to help others and make them happy 😊. I can form relationships easy and i can be an introvert at times but I’m mostly an extrovert! Ahh I can’t wait I want to be in dental school now 🥺. Also this video is so explanatory and helpful thank you 😊☺️
Making friends is how you survive college in general
hmm... nah... I don't think so.
tiny aww poor baby. Sorry you couldn’t make any friends
I think every millimeter counts in all forms of surgery.
Hi my name is Sarah, just wanted to say what a great video it was most informative and useful.
Lots of luck, and success!
I have a question for you, how many drill bits are there and what sounds do they make? When I was getting my cavities fixed the low speed drill sounded like a race car lol Emily
My family doesn’t have money, I don’t know what to do with my life. I’m a sophomore in High School and my grades are amazing. I don’t know if I can afford college and even if I go to dental school, I’m not going to be able to afford it. How did you do it? Or did your family already have money for you?
at my college its different , people don't share their study guide , so that others don't score as same or more than them
For mee its been two years thinking about studying dentistry .. now i am in my senior year i cant see myself being anything else ..BUT I have a problem about the self motivation i am trying to get better just let things go and that i did what i can but i still have the bad thoughts whenever i am stdying and when the exam is soon .. i know what you are saying is true but i really want to study dentistry and get rid off the bad thought that i have so i dont know what to do now ?!!
I’ve wanted to study dentistry, but the only factor that’s making me reluctant is how gross I feel about needles etc touching the gums and tooth extractions. Would I be able to get over this fear through more exposure to it? Or do you think I simply shouldn’t become a dentist? I’m able to push myself to get over fears like this, for example, I’d never have dared to go on a massive rollercoaster, but now love them after actually going on a few (in Thorpe Park to be exact ahah) and was able to dissect a heart well enough for some coursework at school. So I’m just curious about whether or not any dental students were previously squeamish around such things. Thanks btw - such a helpful video
Great, I think I'll ask a few local dental practices if I can shadow anyone. Thank you for your advice- I really appreciate it!
Yeah you should shadow for sure. I knew a few females who studies hygiene and then we're grossed out about the mouth which made no sense lol but good luck !
Don't know if this will help motivate or just demotivate you, but when I 1st got into Dental school I hated it and thought it was super gross, but through extensive contact with it, now 3 years into a 5 year degree, I not only LOVE it, but it really doesn't bother me much anymore, and the same can be said for all of the people in my year.
So, yeah, you do get used to it with time =)
(Also, yeah .... don't question why I went into a degree I hated.... here in Portugal when you're out of high-school, when you go to college, you immediately go into a specific degree of your choice/ability (there is no "pre-med" or pre-anything really, and you do not choose your classes, they are already laid out for you) and going into Dental when you weren't able to get into Med is a good way to go around the system and later apply again to Med with extra credits... heck the same applies for a large number of degrees here ....)
I got used to it. If you really wanna become a dentist, you’ll get over it. And it won’t bother you. Don’t let it demotivate you.
Great advice! Was it hard for you to figure out how to manage your time? I’m curious exactly how much free time to expect when in dental school
... free time ................................
HA ......HA............ha...................
....................................................
....................................................
Now mind you I am in dental school (3rd year out of 5) but it's in Portugal, so, different college and different country, however what he said about self motivation is really true, there, here and probably in every dental school in the world, because even if your schedule says your classes are from 8 to 17 (8 am to 5 pm) or less, expect to be there from 7 to 19 (7 am to 7 pm) nearly every day, excluding study time cause that's a whole other bucket load of hours.....
Heck! nearly everyone in my year, myself included, is running on roughly 5 hours of sleep daily in order to keep up...... some of the more super-organised people can get a good 7 hours of sleep in, but that's about it ............
Every once in a while you can get away with having a day, an afternoon, or a portion of an afternoon off, but even then it's not very common .............................. really depends on how organised you are, how early you can get assignments done, and the time of year (mid semestre you tend to have a lot of assignments but few big tests, maybe a mini-test/quiz here and there, but nearing the end, it's "lack of sleep town" cause you still have assignments and tests, but now exams are gonna be popping up as well so it's tough) .........
Doable? Yes. Easy? NO. Survivable? well yeah, we're still all alive but cooperation and organisation are pretty much mandatory if you want to survive...............
Oh but, I think I should add this, this is only my personal experience, in my college, and everyone's will be different, but if it's worth anything, even being this tough, I love my degree xD
Hate the professors, but love what we learn =) And I started out by hating dentistry, so yeah, don't let the toughness of it demotivate you, it's a very cool degree, and if it's what you want to do, then I wholeheartedly say go for it =3
Carla Belo well said 👏

@@lordhosseinlh Haha xD How come?

Hey man, I'm a post-bac student finishing up requirements for Dental School. The one concern I have with being a dentist is the chronic pain I've heard about. Is this anything you hear about at school?
Rick C-137 It’s all about your ergonomics. They will teach you how to properly perform procedures with correct ergonomics. It is up to you to continue that outside of school. Loupes will help with ergonomics significantly as well!
I'll blow your mind. My gross anatomy was self paced with oral test. We had 6 instructors. Most tests were about an hour with 4-6 students per group. They were rapid fire questions, but was a a lot of what's this, what's I'd do, what innervates it, what type of fibers are in it. The head of the course made the sarcosote embedment that you use to study the brain levels
I just graduated college. This video says the truth and nothing but the truth. I can confirm.
just came across this video! I'm trying to get into this dental hygiene program which is extremely competitive (only 20 students are chosen out of 150!) I would say if you're not 100% motivated, and ambitious as if your life depends on your success then don't even bother! Coming from a foreign country, going to school in America is like twice as hard for me than an average American, but I never let excuses like that get the best of me, and instead, I constantly try to push myself further to excellence!
how did u manage to memorise what you’ve learned in your 1st 2nd year . that thing bothers me so much and make me in dilemma whether to go into dental school or not . like seriously how can i remember all from first year ???
Just subscribed to your channel and its my first time watching your video!! More vlogs to come pls. I want to be a dentist someday too. ✨
Erika Hernandez you probably won’t become one
Leo Di and why??
Erika Hernandez
Don’t listen to him, he’s just being a troll..
Yea Im done I don’t want to become an orthodontist 😣
The way the title of this video is capitalized bugs me
Trevor West DDS Hahaha nice video though
It's true the tooth the maxillary or upper 1 and second tooth molars anatomy are similar, once you get the experience, it get easy. The third molar or wisdom usually is atypical anatomy. For become a dentist you need to have memory and dedication or desire to attend school, basically total years to become a dentist is 8 years, No include dentristy specialisty😅😅
4:20 for what the title says
All of these reasons hit me
So I'm thinking of shifting from geospatial engineering to DS though I've already finished the course. 🤔🤔 hmmmm Looks like a risk but welp idk.
there are so many of these videos geez.
People really hate those schools....
Becoming a Dental Hygienist and We feel the same way! So much material in such a short time and a test every week! It suckkss!!! lol Good Luck! you def have more stuff to do than us.
Kasandra Fulton
Do you think being a dental hygienist is a stable job? Im not gonna lie, I looked at the salaries... and it’s near 20k a year which doesn’t seem like a lot? Idk I’m just wondering which would be more beneficial.
A dentist definitely makes more but youve got the salary wrong. Thats probably an assistant your looking at. Hygienist is like 60,000 to 70,000 a year
This is late but the work benefits for a dental hygienist are horrible
mr. swagpants
Wdym?
I'm a hygienist of 7 years and I came across this video because I'm considering dental school. Have you thought about doing the same? Just curious
Love this video and I'm not even in Dental School. ❤
the only problem is I'm not into details
tnx for sharing ❤️
So I just started watching your videos and one of your shirts caught my eye. Did it say Oviedo? As in Oviedo, FL? Because if it is then wow the world is super small. I'm from Oviedo too!! Hope you are doing great in dental school!!!
+Trevor West DDS hahah that's awesome!!! I still have a few more years to decide whether I wanna pursue dentistry or not but at least the school's senior project is helping lol!
In which dental school are you in?
GREAT EDITING SKILLS IN SHORT GREAT VLOG|YOU CAM OVERCOME DMT “Dental med trials”.
I’m a freshman in high school and I have wanted to be a dental hygienist\dentist since I was a little girl. Does anyone have any tips they could give me? I want to be as prepared for college or my future as I can, because I know many students who wait until senior year to even think about college. I have fairly good grades (As and Bs) and I only know that I need a bachelors degree first, then 4 years of dental school. Am I right??
Originally i wanted to go for dental school, but after my first year of college, i was not sure i wanted to spend 8 years or more in schooling. I found out about the dental hygiene program and decided to pursue that. Much shorter and the program is 2 years and I'm applying for it now so i hope i get in. Honestly, college is not as hard as you would think it is, as long as you discipline yourself every day to stay on top of studying it and make cue cards you will do great.
The mamic thank you so much! I have everyone down my throat every other day telling me “college is not that far away” and “college is way tougher than high school” etc.
Hey what did you major in while getting your bachelors?
Exercise science!
Are you an A student in high-school?
Today I’ve been told that the path to becoming a dentist is a tenacious one 😀
Hey! Im interested in dentistry! Where do you live? Like what Uni are you at? Also, what undergrad did you take?
I hate making friends. I’m out.

.....you cant cash flow it. Do NOT go into debt
My dentist talks wayyyyy too much 🤦🏻♀️ I get tired responding especially when he’s checking Ma tooth like ?????
Azu Nya aww he’s just lonely. Imagine being cranked in a tiny room for hours. He’ll need a bit of human Interaction :)
Should I pursue dentistry if I don’t have artistic skills?
Definitely. I didn't have any artistic skills going in. You'll develop them
Art + Science = Dentistry. Artistic skills are difficult to develop, if you are not "born" with them. By the way, i am commenting under my Aunts name, because i am on her computer right now. My actual RUclips username is Leader, and i aspire to be a Paediatric Dentist one day, before i turn 50.
Please try not to comment after my post, because my Aunt will receive them and wonder what kind of weirdo her Niece is.
Wait OSU like Oklahoma state ?

Do you live on campus in dental school?
One random question : will we be able to do part time jobs when we are in dental school
at my friend's dental school they were prohibited from working their first year and strongly discouraged to work the other 3 years. It depends on your dental school :)
sarah s How tf are you suppose to pay for it then?
@@samueltaylor9935 unfortunately, most dental students have to pay for school with large loans
sarah s Dang lol no wonder student debts are high. They don’t even let you try to pay it yourself.
sarah s so would it be a bad idea to mention that I have a real estate company during my application process. Usually requires me to work 20 hours a week?
Man I am glad I did MBA with finance and real estate investment. Dental school would have caused me to be a suicide case
Cindy T lol
Can you be a left handed dentist?
Yes. I'm left-handed and study on dentistry school. The only difference is what side you sit and that you assistent must do everything he/she is used to with the hand she is not used to use.

i’m still in high school, i’m not the smartest and not the best at science but i am very interested in getting into dental school. should i rethink about trying to getting into dental school?
I was in now way the smartest in my high school. I was average at best. I think it really doesn't matter what your past grades are. If you want to improve them, and be considered a "smart person" it all comes down to work ethic. Work hard and you can be in dental school in a few years time
