    Hi Dakota!
    I could say that I have watched this video like several times because I really wanna go to dental school. I am not really smart when it comes to academics but I am trying my best so far to get a competitive grades to be able to go to dental school. I am planning to go to military after getting my degree and I also watch that video of yours about military people that are going to dental school. This is so informative at least for me and also the other video. Other people might not see too much information about it but there’s also a lot of people there that need the informations and I am one of them! Thank you for this video!!

    dental school is not difficult. its just time consuming. Organic chemistry is was way harder than any course ive taken in my years in dental school.
    People make it hard for themselves because they study last minute. If you review a little each day its time consuming, but not difficult. Its just the lifestyle.

    Hey Dakota,
    I've always wanted to be a dentist growing up through about a week ago, but as I am in my second year of college, reality hit me. I don't know if I am capable of passing those hard organic chemistry classes, or physics classes. I instantly became overwhelmed by all of the things that are required to get my bachelors in biology and survive the 4 years in dental school. Do you think it is possible to get through undergrad and dental school if you aren't one of those super smart kids? Are you able to get through school if you don't have a good almost photographic memory? I'm not a speedy reader, and I don't know if I can learn a semester worth of stuff in just 4 weeks at dental school. It takes me a lot of work to learn and really understand things. Are you enjoying life as a dental student? All these thoughts came to me at once and severely discouraged me to the point that I am thinking of switching my major and whole career path. I don't think I'm smart enough to do hard classes like ochem and physics, and I don't know if I have good enough memory to endure those bio, anatomy, physiology, microbiology classes. Just wondering what you have to say about my situation, and if you have advice from your experience so far.

    • @DentalPro2021
      @DentalPro2021  6 лет назад +30

      Hey Jennifer!
      I want to reassure you that I have been in your situation throughout my entire life. There is even times in dental school where I feel that same way, like I might not be able to make it to the next level of classes... but you can do it. When I was in my undergrad, I never failed a class, but there were times where I had to drop a class before the add drop deadline because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everything those classes required of me to get a good grade. Ochem was one of those classes... here’s the crazy thing... I took my second semester of Ochem all by itself and I still ended up with only a B in the class. I think a lot of students underestimate just how hard undergrad actually is, so try to not compare your performance in undergrad with how you will do in dental school because if you can take it one day at a time in undergrad, you will be able to make it one day at a time in dental school. Looking at an entire curriculum can be very daunting and I have personally been discouraged multiple times by doing that. Just keep trying to get good grades and keep your GPA competitive and you will make it. Long story short, Yes, I believe that you can do it, no matter what your circumstances are. The secret to success is in believing that you are capable of that success, so if you get discouraged, just know that we have all been there, pick yourself back up and keep going! I hope that helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with :)

    Thank you Dakota, that was very informative. you got me again when you said it's kicking your b*t my studies are too so I feel you , and wow!!! I had no idea dental school was so hard, the amount of studies required, is almost like medical school isn't it?
    I guess the mouth really is a big map when it comes to studying it .
    Ps. Best of luck to you with everything! I hope you pass it all successfully,

    • @DentalPro2021
      @DentalPro2021  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you Sarah! You are awesome! the workload is very comparable to medical school, but in dental school we don't focus on systemic pathology nearly as intensely as physicians do... with that said though, there is still a high bar set for all health care providers when it comes to learning about systemic diseases and dental students are not exempt from that.
      one thing that I have learned in my time in school is that the mouth is definitely a major indicator of a patients overall health, and you can learn a lot about someone by simply knowing what things are happening with their teeth and the supporting structures of the mouth.
      good luck on your studies!

    Academic. Since I had a BS in Biology, the didactic courses were not particularly difficult. I didn’t even attend microbiology and made an “A,” but that was downgraded to a “C” due to non-attendance. Handskills were another story. I had trouble with crown-and-bridge. I spent so much time waxing-up that my didactic grades started to slip. D3 GPA 2.05.
    2. Physical. No problems here. Just quickly learn indirect vision and watch your posture. During D1, we would kid each other that we would all be mandibular dentists and leave maxillary dentistry for someone else.
    3. Emotional. Huge problem here. During the third year of dental school, I came down with fulminating ulcerative colitis & ended up with a permanent ileostomy. It took me 2 years to recover from the surgery. I changed majors & went on to earn an MBA, GPA 3.42. I wasn’t a “D” student after all.
    The top six stress items, as perceived by third-year students, included examinations and grades, graduation requirements, inconsistency of professor's feedback, patient tardiness or no show, atmosphere created by clinical faculty, and financial responsibilities…Journal of Dental Education (1990)
    There should be more 1:1 student support to at least match the funding and attention paid to the first class architectural and mechanical facilities. So, you spend a lot of time at the bench and neglect didactic studies. Your GPA suffers and the stress affects your health, psyche and saps your confidence. Dental faculty just don’t know how to teach.
    My classmates & I always partied hard on Friday nights. We slept until Saturday noon. Then, it was 6 hours of study time; 8 hours on Sunday. We could not even have the weekends off! As time passed, some students lost weight and looked wan and grey. Others gained a lot of weight. I suspect some women lost their menstrual cycle or it became more painful. Others suffered with bad acne and rashes. I got ulcerative colitis and had to quit dental school. My roommate contemplated suicide. There was not much “Me” time. If college students, especially grad students, are a national treasure, why are they submitted to so much mental stress and abuse?
    Professors behaving badly. Besides male instructors sexually harassing female students, some were actually downright nasty. Example: At the downtown free clinic, many street people came in mainly for extractions. Many came in drunk or high. During pharmacology we had learned not to administer anesthesia to patients in these conditions. Instead, give them an appointment when they would be sober. My instructor insisted I administer Lidocaine & extract the molar. When I mentioned there might be a drug interaction, he got really angry & roughly administered 2 carpules. OMG! I successfully extracted the tooth. The patient bolted from the chair immediately after the extraction. I barely had time to tell him to put on a tea bag and not to lose the blood clot. Grade “D.”
    Trial by ordeal. What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger!..Nietzsche & Kelly Clarkson
    4. Competitive. As stated in this YT and in similar videos, everyone was in the same boat. Everyone helped each other. My cubbyhole mate saved me several hundred dollars. Back in the mid-80s, we used to cast gold prosthetics. I forgot to secure a miscast and left it on the bench for someone to take. She put it away for me.
    There was no support for students. We were left to our own devices and help from other classmates. During a bench exam, a friend’s “Shorty” handpiece stopped working. The proctor prevented him from borrowing another from the dispensary. Reason: failure to maintain his equipment. I finished early & loaned him mine.

      Hi Sohaib! There is certainly not just one book that you will study from in dental school, but that is great that you want to get a head start. If you want to be more exposed to dental procedures and see what dentists do on a daily basis, I would recommend looking up dental procedures on RUclips to get a feel of how things are done. If you are interested in getting a head start on studying anatomy, I highly recommend purchasing essential anatomy 5 from your phone or computer and studying that atlas (it is a 3D anatomy atlas and it is incredibly helpful... I have used it in both undergrad AND dental school and I have done very well in those classes).

    Dental school sucks. High workload and if your clinical demonstrator doesn't like you then it doesn't matter how good your work is, they will grade you poorly and make your life suck. There is always students that are favoured even if they don't have good skills. I had secured a job way before graduation but if I let that slip then these assholes would have looked for any reason to fail me. Twenty years later I am killing it and they are still pathetic!
