      Oh my gosh I remember exactly how that felt. It is INSANE to me that I was in your exact spot a year ago. This year of dental school has flown by so quickly. It is one of the most memorable experiences of my life and I wish I had shown more of the beginning on this channel, but I'm glad to be documenting it now!

    Moving to 2nd year of dental school and i must say that it flies !! Like there are times when things aren't good and sometimes it is , and hand skills will get better along the time as he said , and lastly remember that " Grass is always greener on the other side "

    • @stephenraydentist

      The grass isnt always greener! Dental school has gotten progressively harder on me since I made this video as a D1. Things just get packed in much more densely and your responsibilities in this clinic mean that you are constantly stretched thin. I need to talk more about this on the channel which I will do in the future! Thanks for the comment!

    Stephen, I'm sitting here on RUclips looking at vlogs and seeing what I can do to improve my vlogs, and I know I've told you this before but I have to say it again, your camera work and editing is really amazing. One of the best I've seen amongst dental students and dentists that create content. I'm still learning a lot about filming and editing, but one of my goals this summer is to really practice and be able to create cleaner, more cinematic vlogs like this. This was really a complete vlog man, I loved it. I know this video is "old" but you make great content all the time. Keep it up

      Eli thank you so much for this amazing comment, my man!! You have no idea how much I appreciate this! I have always loved the “filmmaking” side of this youtube channel for me. The funny thing about it is that it really is just repetition. I have noticed myself getting better at editing over time just because I do it so often these days and the time spent with it has really made a difference. Just like everything we do in dental school! But thank you man I appreciate it and I hope school is treating you well!

    • @stephenraydentist
      @stephenraydentist  2 года назад +3

      Well I would tell you to probably not go into dentistry if the only reason for your decision is that you couldn’t get into med school! Dentistry can be a very challenging profession that requires a lot of time, money, and effort to enter and if you have no attachment to it at all, you may find yourself regretting your decision. Do some shadowing and try to learn the profession a bit more so that you can be more educated on what you’re getting into! Don’t just go because it’s the next best thing for you after med!

      My advice would actually be to not study at all and just enjoy your time off! Trust me, there will be PLENTY of studying for you very soon. Try and enjoy life! However, if you're set on studying before school starts, dont study math. There is next to zero math in dental schools. Basic head and neck anatomy would be good and then biochemistry and histology would be good subjects to study. No math! Best of luck in your dental school experience! I'm sure you're going to do great!

    • @stephenraydentist
      @stephenraydentist  3 года назад +1

      For sure!! It is a lot of work! But it is definitely do-able. You just have to stay on top of things every day. The challenge is just the sheer number of lectures we have to get through to prepare for each exam. If you can sit down and knock out a bunch of lectures early in a study period, you'll be in good shape! The added difficulty is lab work. The work we do in our pre-clinical labs can be taxing and can take away from our study time. Once again, however, it is all very do-able!

    I have some relatives who come from Europe and don't have insurance and need dental work! I was wondering if you fix peoples teeth in the school, and is it costly it is?

      We do a lot of dental work at school! Our 3rd and 4th years are almost completely clinical so we treat patients for everything they might need. As far as cost I can’t be sure of this figure but I believe our price is about ⅓ of what you would pay going to a private practice to see a dentist!

    How can i survive in dental college as an introvert?

    • @crakz5088
      @crakz5088 Год назад +1

      Become an extrovert. I like to put myself in extreme situations in my mind in order to be more social. Per example, I tell myself "if I don't go talk to this person and socialize with them, I will not succeed in life". The whole point of telling myself that is to put false pressure on myself for me to go do it. After using this method many times, I got used to socializing without using it. Confidence is key. If you're a man, try going to the gym and improving your posture, this will make you look more confident/charismatic and also will give you a better mental health. Those are some tricks I've used to become an extrovert and now I am a financial manager. I speak in front of hundreds of people everyday.

    Hi stephen
    I just saw your video and I have to ask you something. What do you think of the online classes? You think that they affect our knowledge and practice?

    • @stephenraydentist
      @stephenraydentist  3 года назад

      Everyone is different, and everyone responds to online courses in different ways. Some will benefit from them and some will be hurt by them. I personally have mixed feelings. I like having the ability to watch lectures on my own schedule instead of one that is set up for me, however I tend to be less diligent about watching them because I am not being made to. I like having the ability to speed up the teacher's speaking to get through lectures quicker, but there are times when I can't see the teacher's writing or facial expressions which are very important in terms of conveying information. They are a mixed bag for me!

    Hi Stephen,
    I recently found your channel and have loved it so far! I'm currently a third year Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) student , but as of recently I've been seriously considering dentistry as a career path. I know it's not the conventional route because I have no science background, neither have I taken any science courses other than biology in high school. Can I still pursue dentistry? I know most dental schools have prerequisites and as long as those are completed with good marks and the DAT (with a good mark) is completed, I should be good to go. Realizing that I don't have any prerequisites and I'm almost done my Bachelor's degree, I feel kind of uneasy, but still want to aim for dental school. I assume I might have to complete an extra year of uni in order to complete everything... I was wondering if I could get your advice on this. It would be super helpful! Thank you :)

      Hi Zoe, thanks for the comment!! You can absolutely pursue dentistry!! I was an English major in undergrad and I've talked about that in a few of my videos! I would recommend checking out the playlist on my channel which is called "Prudential students start here" That'll give you more of my thoughts on the pre-dental process! You will definitely be set back a few years completing all of your pre-requisite courses, but I know MULTIPLE of my classmates are in their late 20s and 30s. There is no issue with going to dental school a few years later than the average student! If it is what you want to do, you should go all in to make it happen!

      @@stephenraydentist thank you so much for getting back to me Stephen!! Thank you for the advice, and I watch the video you recommended - made some valid points. I think I’ve decided to go down this route, it’ll be challenging but worth the try! Keep up the videos, they’re a BIG help! :)

      Dental school is quite the challenge! But math is literally almost not part of it! If you're interested in hearing more about how difficult dental school actually is, check out episode 008 of the teeth time podcast here on RUclips where I discuss this very topic with fellow dental student, OneMissionDMD. ruclips.net/video/5dClSuuRF3s/видео.html

    What are the required 12th grade results for undergraduate?

    • @stephenraydentist
      @stephenraydentist  3 года назад

      I’m not exactly sure how to answer this! College admissions vary widely! High school GPA and ACT/SAT score are the biggest predictors of acceptance into an undergrad program but I couldn’t speak on what those numbers need to be!

    Hey Stephen! I’m currently a CDA, I have almost three years under my belt. I’m getting ready to go back to school for my undergrad degree in science. And I plan to apply for dental school after graduating. Do you think having my prior experience as a CDA, will help me in dental school? The lab work portion sounds really intriguing just in general for me.

    LOL just be honest and say you like the money n the ego that comes with it. I am on the same boat, cleaning teeth is no glamorous than a plumber except it's in the mouth.

      I’m sorry my friend I don’t feel this way! I never pursued dentistry for money or ego. I chose dentistry because when I saw it for the first time close up I knew it was the profession for me. I felt called to it. And yes I do believe you can feel called to a profession. Dentistry is a very difficult field. It’s certainly difficult to enter into, but once you become a dentist, it is hard work. Some people make it sound like a career that is all sunshine and rainbows but it isn’t. It is hard work. I fully understand that and anticipate that aspect of my career with excitement. I look forward to building a business to enrich the lives of those we serve and those who work with me. Any money I make will go towards giving my children a great life and giving them anything they need to be successful. Thanks for your comment!
