It is upsetting that people want such history waved away without examining the psychology of those who felt it necessary to terrorize Black people from slavery onward. Unless we know why racist White people during that time behaved as rank savages, it could certainly happen again.

My 3rd great grandfather lived in Quitman, Clarke County (same county as Shubuta, MS) owned a store, and had over 100 acres of land. He left the house one morning to go to work and went missing never to return. This was in 1928. His wife never declared him dead. We have long thought he ended up at that bridge.

There was a Jones guy that lived in one of our old homes who told a story to me about his teenager brother leaving home one day to never return. Different guys but same story. The grand dragon of the KKK live in Mathersville in the 60s/70s, at least that's what I was told. Don't want to name drop since his family is still living in the area. Hateful folks back then. It has taken a long long time, but Mississippi is not the ruthless state it once was. What they have never said was certain white women was hung on that same bridge for helping black women.

My paternal grandmother and her parents came from Mississippi and I never 👎🏽 knew until a year ago when I did Ancestry online. I always thought they were from Detroit. The more I learn about how Mississippi was, the more I realize they left Mississippi to stay alive and not be under the gun. My great grandpa was born in 1893. I remember he died in 1967. I missed my great grandpa, we used to go riding on Belle Island and go buy watermelon 🍉. He always gave me change(coins) for candy, potato chips and soda pop.😊
