I use Thea Render and it has a "Clay" option for a monochromatic render which is a one click and non-destructive process. As I understand, most render programs have this same option. The new version of Thea Render has another setting for including the lines in the render for variations on the finished image.

Thanks for the lovely intro Aaron!

There is a “swop” plugin which is also much quicker.

Hi Aaron, perhaps a quicker way would be to replace just one material the way you did and then use Thomthom’s Replace Material to change the others to white. One would save a lot of clicks that way.

Didn’t realize you could delete colors/textures this way, thanks for that too!

There is a “delete all” for colours in 2017 but we need a “delete all except”.

If you go to 'List' dropdown in Materials browser there is an option for 'Delete All'. There's also and extension called 'Materials Tools' that will let you remove materials from just groups, components or selections. Lastly, I like to use 'Color By Layer' overrride in the Layers panel as then, I can just toggle that on or off as needed...even save it as a style and scene.

@@ericsargeant3254 I was going to mention the 'Material Tools' when I saw this video, but I guess you have beat me to it :)
'Remove from Selection' is something I use very often as it is easy to control which materials need to be stripped off from the specific geometry, and you just purge the materials, where SketchUp will get rid of materials that are not being used. Effectively, getting rid of the texture off the surface and off the model.

I really didn't get what exactly more this method can do than a render software itself. V-Ray and other rendering softwares have the functionality to remove materials and specify a default color without affecting your model. I have to watch Joseph Kim's 3D Basecamp presentation.

Clay render/override material from V-Ray or any rendering software is a great way to produce 'white' render. It still takes much longer time to produce the image than SketchUp's simple export 2D image. I was actually using 'monochrome' mode on SketchUp to output lineworks, and this is a good way to tone down some overwhelming materials in the scenes.

Hi Aaron I would really love to see a video that I could send to a non tech client on how to use Sketchup Viewer.

Have a question. I'm using the demo and want to purchase, but I am experiencing an issue. I work on my design and then save. Next time I open it says it belongs to someone else and it's a read-only file. I save a copy as, work on it, save, and it's a read-only again. No one else has access to my laptop.

Where are you saving your file to? This can happen when you save to external or cloud drive. Then SketchUp can't AutoSave and locks the file.

@@vincentmullett9881 I have experienced the same issue, and, I believe it is related to MS's OneDrive. Although I have the file saved on MY hard drive, OneDrive is still saving it elsewhere and on its own timeline, thus locking the file.

Nice hack to get down to more massing model palette. Could you edit each texture to be all white, then just hit restore to original in the edit texture dialog? That might keep the textures, and export for rendering. Tedious though.

Most rendering extensions, such as VRAY, have a 'Materials Override' option to do a 'clay' or diagrammatic style.

conceptual rendering = massing model palette. we are on the same path!
