Many thanks. Food for thought. I toggle “hidden lines” so often that I have assigned it a shortcut key.
I choose a prop based on value-for-polygons. I download several models that fit the criteria into the download folder, sort them from low size to high size, and then starting from the smallest, look them over until I find the one that works. Alternatively, I’ll use a prop from a propcollection file. These are props that have already been “cleaned up”, properly sized, appropriately named and grouped, and optimised and they are generally easier to colour.

I had the same problem with my 3d Warehouse model - "Passive House - YTONG Passivhaus". It was over 110 MB. Including all of your tips in this video there were 2 extensions that helped a lot. Cleanup3 and Material Resizer. My model is now "only" 33 MB and it fits the upload limit of 50 MB for 3d Warehouse models.

Although you mentioned in passing about a group being "solid", this is a good measure as to whether there are any internal features hidden inside parts. I once downloaded a model which seemed well made, but inside a group was an entirely different model which was very complex. I also run the Cleanup3 plugin on any downloaded models, but just be aware that Cleanup can take a long time on large polygon count models (or even crash!).

Lawrence Cuthbert While I prefer to model solids, it’s not strictly required... but yeah, I prefer them that way, too!

@@AaronMakingStuff In my experience skipping past boring bits of tidy up and making sure that parts are watertight always comes back to bite my a**e later in the design process. But a lot of my more complex models were destined to be 3D printed, so the details are important in this case.

Thank you for this great explanation. I have downloaded files into my model just to find out I bit off more than my computer could chew.

Very useful, I've not felt confident uploading to Warehouse in a useful way, perhaps you could cover that one day

Great one Aaron. I like this kind of explanations. One thing to add is this would be very very useful when you decide to put accessories in your model. They look tiny but they probably will hold the heaviest part of your model. I remember I had added pieces of accessories and that ended up having my 70 MB model turned into a 350 MB. It was a nightmare to me.
By the way, Susan & Mark shouldn't be there without telling you.

Hi I’ve been using sketchup for a few years now, but I use the web version because I like the ability to model from anywhere. My question is do you cover the web version in the skill builder series? I would also like to know if sketchup has any plans to make extensions available in the web version?

I uploaded a model the other day and then later, I needed it for something in another model. So, I dl'd it.
    🤯
    What the heck!!??
It's box is huge and it took a hecka long time to dl and I know I deleted stuff before uploading! So, what did I do wrong?

Where in the model is the bicycle?? Under cushion? Origin? 1/2 mile away?

Mother board and bicycle under the couch cushions? I was wondering where those things got to!

Dave Richards I guess I should be checking the cushions of my couch more often...

Does one upload to 3D warehouse to be able to provide a model on Google Earth? A video on that perhaps?

    • @SketchUp
      @SketchUp  4 года назад

Google Earth no longer accepts any models... If you look through our videos, there are videos on loading a model into a local instance or GE... but no telling how long Google will keep that functionality.

This is a great Tips subject. (Begs the question, where're tutorials for 3D Warehouse contributors!)
Note to self: keep sticking to artists/designers you know, folks with "Tiger" in handle, and avoid, if possible, folks with "Only" in their names. 😁
