It’s interesting because FF8 is comprised of a lot of FF7’s ideas that were scrapped and repurposed for this like having a deuteragonist that will influence both present and future (Zack & Laguna), Ultimecia’s Time Compression being a small scope version of Sephiroth’s original plan during production where you need to invoke a universally catastrophic event to create a big bang, which was omitted to just simply wound the planet with Meteor and absorb the Lifestream.
They should literally keep the story the same BUT go more into detail about lore. Like Dyne, The orphanage, Ultimecias Time, Adels rule, Norg... Ff7 remake just shows that ff8 was a better game story wise.
very much bro. since b4, when i was a kid. i dont like ff7. year 2000 and ff8 is the best game and most famous in ps1. i start playing when i was 13 yrs old. and now im 38. i still buy ps5 if they will make a ff8 remake =) it will be great and many players like me will buy and play because it is full of memories.
@theerealatm no way bro, ff7's story is amazing, but I do also love ff8. They are so closely tied imo that chronological order is the best way to remake them. I really hope to see them both fully remade and completed in my life time.
To answer your question: yes, 8 would have been a far better candidate, as it already has time travel elements in it and as you say implementing it in 7R obnoxiously undermines the original themes, however I still wouldn’t welcome extensive narrative changes. I actually don’t think SE really possess the ability in terms of creative potential to pull it off anymore. Call me burnt, lol
Dreamteam is long gone yeah. But for a remake you, could stay true to the original and would need minimal creativity. Just improve on where absolutely needed and watch it print money.
@@Romess1 Exactly. Could’ve been an absolute cash-cow and a brilliant piece of work. Yet the creatives instead just tried to be edgy and garner interest through controversy. Very poor decision making.
@@Romess1 Yeah they could leave every plothole and even the glitches, give it some modern graphics and guess what it'd be gold again because gold is gold. But they just can't handle it 3:
Agreed, I doubt the guys in SE now a days have the chops to make a decent remake without making it more "accessible" without remembering why people play these types of games to begin with. That's not even taking into account what happens to the games once it hits their "ethics department", lol.
Spot on with this take, ff8 would've without a doubt been then choice for what sqaure-enix did to ff7. I would've enjoyed ff7 remake had it been a 1 to 1 remaster, or 2 to 1 remaster, they could've totally cleaned up the og with added content that fits the theme of the original story, sqaure-enix missed the mark here sadly 😥
I definitely agree on FF8 being the better basis for a time travel / alternate reality plotline. My favorite show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ended 20 years ago, and they just released an Audible audio drama with some of the original actors, and it's amazing. They were sensible enough to use the alternate reality trope already established in the original show to create a contained story that feels like a throwback, without touching the canon that's so beloved by the fans.
I've always felt that FF8 was the most in need of a proper remake or even re-imagining. The script has the makings of greatness but it falls short. It needs a total revision to refine its best ideas.
I agree they could change some things but they better include all the same moments that made this game great and enhance them to make them better. One example is when Squall is carrying rinoa on the train tracks on his own Come to think of it. How do they do squalls inner thoughts at that part in a remake. Those inner thoughts are crucial
Huge FF8 fan here, and I wholeheartedly aggree👍 Only caveat I would have is whether or not the whispers would prevent me from playing cards at crucial moments😂
It's a crime they keep ignoring FF8 in all these years. Sure, it received the remaster treatment for the game's 20th anniversary, but apart from that. And it still features the same old blurry background images. No updated FMVs like they did for FF9. And now with FF7 I think they put all those ideas, which originally came from FF8, into the remake project. There are so many things in FF7 Remake and Rebirth, or even Crisis Core Reunion (like the lighthouse at the beach), which remind me of FF8 and make me think: how would FF8 look like if it would use the same engine as FF7R. Imagine Balamb Garden fully explorable with lots of people and lots of going on, Deling City with all those busses, the trains, the enemies, bosses. It would be a treat, a gem. True, there are lots of things, which should be revisited, like the junction system or the general combat system, character developement and especially Laguna's character to flesh out more, add more background information, make the characters more likeable. And when I think about how they would arrange the music for FF8 I get chills. The OST for FF8 is stellar, and deserves a proper upgrade with maximum care by a devoted sound team. Idk if Uematsu had any overseeing duties for the new arrangements in FF7R besides contributing the theme songs, but the music turned out great. Let's hope, Square Enix have some plans for this installment, because I definitely think it's worth it. More worth than a FFX Remake for sure!
I feel deeply conflicted about this topic. On the one hand, I now have zero desire to see SE tackle remakes. On the other, there is a lot of potential in a remake of FF8. But I know I absolutely do not want to see an FFX remake.
@@orion8550 it's always that thing with remakes - either they are a hit or a miss. Look at Disney and their live-action remakes from classic cartoon films. Some of them are great, some fail to express the charme the original had. I think it's similar with video games. Maybe they should hire an independant studio to tackle the remake instead and just do the overseeing. Like Yoshinori Kitase said, it should be a team of young people to do this remake. A younger generation. FF8 definitely needs some polishing, it was a great game back then, ignore all the haters out there. There are far more worse games in this world than this. Strangely, many people don't like 13 that much either and blame it to be the downfall of the series. However, most fans prefer 13 more than 8, when it comes to rankings or sort of, which I can't understand.
FF8 is my favorite of the ps1 games, the story and junction system, the card game i lost countless hrs in without even noticing, the characters r top tier and the cinematics r amazing, especially the transition cinematics... cant say enough good things about it, but i do agree that the time "dementors" would make more sense pullin strings behind the scenes in 8...
Everything you said in this video echoes everything. I’ve been saying about FFVIII. That game greatly could have benefited for a lot of the experiments Square wanted to do plus they could have also made the Junction system better. I wouldn’t have even mind if that game was turn based. It’s even more aggravating that are remaking FFIX which is another well beloved titled that was already perfect. SMH VIII will always be a black sheep
Thanks for the kind words, Red! I'm very motivated by the people who have stuck with this little channel from the beginning and still check in. Cheers!
Great video brother, at first when I saw this thumbnail and premiseI was scared but I 100% agree with you. I still think they had to Remake 7 first because of the monetary reasons but if 7R didn't go this route and they wanted to remake another FF, this idea for FF8R was perfect idea which fits Square nowadays
They turned the “value of life with the consequence of death” VII theme into “defying fate XIII” theme. I think you can expand the “love yourself love those you value and learn to be loved theme” without meta ghosts. Also thank you for bringing up the horrendous new Squall design which not at all resembles his original design.
If square really wanna make a splash as much as I love ff8 they should remake Parasite Eve..that game with today's engines n tech can bring a whole new audience
Quarter way through and gotta say this is exactly what I’ve been saying for a bit. FF8 really was the perfect choice for the route they chose to go for 7R. They’d have every opportunity to polish things that bugged people with the original while still staying true to the general core ideas of the original game. FFVIII is so unique between the music, atmosphere, etc and I can only imagine things like ultemacia’s castle, lunatic pandora, Esthar, the garden war, squalls limit breaks, DOOMTRAIN, and so many other really cool things in a remake. But since they chose 7 to remake the only possible way we’ll get an VIII remake is probably WAY down te he line. Square will most likely make a VI or IX remake before it especially to not redo the time messy plot and it’ll be an entirely new team. I really do hope we one day see it come together because VIII is my personal favorite and I feel it’s really under appreciated. What I’d give to get a surprise trailer with a redone intro trailer sometime soon. It’s all just a missed opportunity as the potential is right there. Edit: finished, and yeah 100% that last bit just sums it up perfectly. It’s the same idea I had with dark souls 2. I wish square saw it this way. One day 🙌
The time travel and msnipulation plot in FF7 remake would have made more sense in FF8. A plot where Ultimecia is fully aware of the time loop that will inevitably defeat her and tries to break it.
FF7R is such a fever dream. I still can't believe they did it, and because they didn't want Togo back and "remake" an already established story. Could u imagine if capcom remade resident evil 4 but changed the whole story fundamentally?
El video me puso pensativo, analicé, me emocioné, lloré, es un gran detalle que hayas nombrado el aspecto inicial de Squall. Se nota que le tienes amor a FF VIII. Excelente video. Espero con ansias tambien un ReFF VIII
knowing what we know about modern Square , and the ridiculous amount of abuse they put their flagship, nostalgia cash-cow franchise... I'm gonna go ahead and guess the reason ANY changes cannot be permanent on the remake is MONEEEEEEEEEEEY. whats sells better, and creates more engagement/hype than fan service? MULTIVERSE fanservice
You nailed it in one. The whispers exist purely to give them a way to bring Zack back to allow them to provide fanservice, not to tell a compelling story. The vague nature of the ending? As you said, to create engagement. Fanservice = instant money to the current SE fanboys
I really want a ff8 remake or a sequel and also I don't mind ff7 remake and rebirth as it is a sequel and expands the story even more and is doing things that coundn't be done back in the day. Also it will help with the stories of all our beloved characters!🥰🥰
31:53 - My personal guess/armchair observation is that there are four main reasons why people are giving FF7R a free pass: 1) A lot of players think: "I HAVE to love this game because its FF7."--a sense of obligation/commitment. 2) They're caught up in hype culture; the anticipation over "what's next?" causes people to overlook any shortcomings in the hope that all their concerns will eventually be assuaged. 3) They give Japanese writers a free pass on everything because all bad writing is simply handwaved as "cultural differences" (the weeb's equivalent of the "God moves in mysterious ways" cop-out argument). 4) As you've alluded to in previous videos, perhaps they just don't actually care about the story of FF7; all they care about is whether or not their preferred ship/"waifu" survives and gets a happy ending.
1. Emotional sunk cost fallacy... 2. Hope. 3. This might actually be the saddest part and overall lowers the quality of story telling as art. 4. All I see is people wanting personalities, not characters. People look with titled heads when I tell them that a Zack that never died defending Cloud is not the same Zack that gave his life for this. 1 & 2 is very strong, combined with the ships and waifus culture makes for a powerful cocktail. We can only wait to see the result, but I hope that everyone that wanted Aerith and Zack to live and praise remakes subversion will not whine about the "masterful storytelling" when these characters die (but ofc they will, and they will blame us, not the developers).
Phenomenal video, and a topic I personally have a strong interest in, because I argued for a while as well that FFVII R has its fundamental story structure designed as if it was for FFVIII, and I have very good reason to believe this is not a coincidence either looking at SE's history. Wonderful video as always, king. I genuinely laughed at that jab at the Squall is dead theory 😂 PS: There is one argument that you left wide open that I think you should address in the future: the game is not a Remake, but a sequel, which opens the door for challenging your Days of Future Past point. It's easy to counter argue that, but try to embrace that aspect of VII R, bc it's essentially FFVII's Sequel Trilogy. PS2: Was not expecting that XIV jab hahahaha
Thank you, sir! High praise from the main man. And cheers for the feedback. I know the part you're referring to. I think at that moment, I was leaning into the idea that the game often tries to walk and talk and identify as a Remake. Even though it's not true. In that case, I may be as guilty as SE of head-hopping between Remake and Sequel to fit my narrative at any given time. In hindsight, I wish I was clearer there.
@@orion8550 Fear not, you addressed one of the two core groups of Remake fan arguments. You should address both as a Remake and as a sequel because that is precisely what SE did, and thus, should be held to that ambiguous scrutiny accordingly.
If you're saying that a sequel should have more license to be different to an original, then yeah, that's true to an extent. Aliens is much more action-focused than Alien, for example - to use an example used in the video. The problem with Remake as a sequel is that it's incredibly antagonistic towards the original material. It's woefully insecure about itself (with good reason, to be fair) and from the Dementors being metaphors for fidelity which need to be overcome to "make it right" and the implication that the original game was the 'bad timeline', it goes out of its way to repeatedly suggest that the original game is old skin than needs to be shed. People ask all the time why people like me feel so strongly negative towards the Remake, and why we're not content to just let it do its own thing. Well, because it picked a fight with people like me straight out of the gate, and it picked a fight with a game we love, that's why. We didn't start that, but we're happy to keep it going. And then, in the Rebirth trailer, it has the chutzpah to say 'Forget all that, peeps. What's done is done, let's all focus on the future.' The best argument against the Remake is that the people who made it appear to be telegraphing through Aerith's V/O that they're embarassed by it. Or at least they want to get away from the confusion and divisiveness that it's caused. Sequels need to be rooted in the original material, to embrace the original material, or they're going to be rejected and decanonised by big chunks of a fanbase, and that's exactly what happened with Remake. (I could go on about the lack of rooting, for example how they wrote Aerith into a corner where her actions in Remake are unambiguously evil, but that could lead into me essaying for days.)
Since time compression is a thing in this game it would have to stick pretty strict to the original narrative and then everything after Adel could change
Wanna know what'd be kinda interesting? A remake of the original Alien movie where some weird cosmic something-or-other adds the possibility of alternate universes, but ultimately the end is still the same. Where, even though timelines might split, you still can't escape inevitability.
You know what I agree with you 💯 final fantasy 8 needs a remake and the whispers would have worked better with 8 not 7. I’m a huge final fantasy fan and 8 was my all time favourite. Got a video coming out tomorrow about FF8 be sure to check it out leave your comments
As much as I love FF8 and would love a remake, they lost my trust with FF7R. Their idea to "improve" FF7's story was to make it more like 8. I can only imagine how they'd "improve" FF8's story, make it more like FF13-2?
If they'd remake ff8 they'd probably only have part 1 take place in balamb garden only or up to the dollet mission or fire cave if we're lucky in the spirit of quote on quote "expanding" they'll bloat and pad out to hell and back certain parts. They'll make squall a teddy bear to appeal to as many people as possible because of how mixed he is doing major overreaction corrections making him fall for quistis cause some people don't like rinoa so they'll pull some love triangle shit. Seifer will have a hard on for squall cause might as well? Selphie will not be playable till part 2 and elina will show up constantly and make squall have seizures of Edea and ultimecia under the flimsy logic of well people know who they are so let's destroy any intrigue and suspense and part 1 will end with them leaving for timber end of game cue mystery box bullshit of the unknown journey continues or whatever also laguna flashbacks are treated as dlc.
Imagine during rebirth the game just randomly shifts to you controlling squall in his own story and square's just snuck in their plan of making this all an FF crossover story this whole time lol
If I could change anything about 8 it would be how keeping your level low for as long as possible makes the end game easier, that leveling system has to go.
Dare I suggest that the teen drama element in FF8 would have also more suited some of the people Remake drew into the fandom? You're definitely correct that some element of the sequel getting a pass is that people brush off the time travel/alternate universe elements as just some side-issue, or 'it was fine until the endgame'. Whereas to me, the way they've changed things is totally story and theme-breaking. Everything that JonahtheMann says applies as well. The fact that it's a trilogy plays into this - not just allowing people to suspend their judgement, to hope it will get better, but the developers to suspend their explanations. And as I've always said, as S-E is forced to put more on the table people will be forced to take a view. And after the first installement, I only see that going one way. So much of what people were left with after the first part of the sequel was just malaise. You see that with the stans of it as much as anything else. Their party line swung from 'It HAS to change to keep it fresh' to 'NOTHING is changing, there will only be minor changes if any' pretty much overnight. Even the people who supposedly love the sequel have absolutely no idea what is going on or what they want out of it. There's a really palpable emotional emptiness in the fanbase about where this is going. We got a FFVII "remake" by the way partly because of the popularity of seven, but also because the original character models were terrible and the original translation was extremely poor. And as soon as VIII dropped, people realised how bad the VII character models were by comparison. (Well, I should say no later than when VIII dropped. I think I realised the FVII character models were bad more or less immediately because RE1 had been released a year before and it had better character models) This created a massive demand to revisit VII pretty much as soon as VIII dropped, which never went away. I think there's a good argument that if VII had the character model quality even of VIII, VII would never have been a priority for a remake. 28:45 "The lamest FF theory of all time" Sorry mate but no, 'Cloud is Shinra's son' takes that title by a mile. Just about the only umabiguously good thing to happen to the FF7 fandom in recent years is how much that one has slid off.
@@anthroposmetron4475 Hey, it's JonahtheMann again (this is my "official" channel account). I just recently uploaded a long-form critique of FF7R's ending, discussing such issues as fan expectations, suspension of disbelief, how (and how NOT) to write plot twists, time-travel problems, exposition, pacing and how to create conflict and drama. If you have the time to spare, you just may like it. It took me 3 and 1/2 years to make.
haven't finished the video yet, but a ff8 remake with changes similar to what they did in 7 wouldn't be such a bad idea and would actually fit the narrative quite nicely i think. Also, 8 really needs to a remake and a revamp of the battle system... i love 8, its story and characters, but i hate the draw/junction system. i find it to be a grindy waste of time considering all the enemies scale to your level. leveling up is pointless, you grind magic to get a advantage and thats not fun, it needs to be fixed.
If they can remake it completely faithful to the story, with graphics precisely like un the FVM scenes, and perhaps some minor gameplay & quality of life improvements, I'll throw my whole wallet at them.
FF8 Remake could make sense for a lot of reasons. Like you said, time travel and weird meta narratives would fit better with the style of story in FF8 plus that will give them a chance to fix the awful junction and magic draw system.
They lied TWICE! And everyone's eating it up like it's a master piece already. I've kept this bottled up but I genuine do not believe any old fan like this new dogshit. The gameplay and design are great but the core is soulless. Just a excuse. They could've already just kept it simple and called it's ff7 2. But they need to scam. We need a pettition to get our money back from the first scam. And after looking into the compilation after 7 I'm not surprised about this shit show. The fan they even made this possible kept the hype alive for decades only to be the ones mocked. "We need artistic liberty" MAKE A NEW GAME! "The old game still exist" as if it was wrong to want a upd area version. I'm not even a purist I want them to expand but they didn't even do that. Now tifa is a antagonist? WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY DOING. They are just ass pulling shit now. I've never been so mad at a game before.
God, I love this game so much despite its flaws, but i agree with you the whispers prob would have been better utilized in this game, not sure if we will ever get a ff8 remake, and not sure how that would go, if they change it as radically as ff7r, not sure it would work as well, as some of the story/character elements could be fleshed out better or told better due to dialogue/translation issues back in the day, as there is some scenes with squall and rinoa /quistis that make more sense in Japanese translation that dont make sense in English, and make for more compelling story plots, so i think they should work on this, and update the combat to fall in line similar to ff7r, thanks for covering this game, it doesnt get the love it so rightly deserves
If I ever see the ballroom dance scene remastered, I’ll cry big grown-up tears. At least with a modern remake, someone can bring Irvine a portable phone battery so we can see the full ending. 😅
Almost completed the new remake off final fantasy 7 I never forget those days I really hope you guys bring final fantasy 8 remake and also 9 I completed 7 8 and 9 it would be absolutely brilliant on all of us final fantasy fans! playstation 1 looking at it now is unbelievable I really have enjoy final fantasy 7 remake 😊
just make the ff8 remake, i loved the mix between mordern and industrial styles. the junction system can be fixed, the great heyne explored, maybe trabia before it gets nuked. bigger timber and FH.
great video couldn't agree more with this alot of great talking points and examples brought up if the time travel meta commentary idea was gonna be used then I feel like it would been better justified on a game like ff8 compared to ff7 which was a game that already felt complete with its storyline and has nothing to do with time travel at all. I honestly would of respected square more if they went and remaked ff8 a game that while I hold fondness and appreciation for unfortunately has allot of missed potential, ideas and concepts that weren't fully explored to the degree it needed to be along with characters who deserved to shine more but no instead of giving and breathing new life into a game that will just do ff7 again because we need more money we gotta keep milking that cow.
Lol 8 is perfect choice you dont even need remake it is open ended setup for a prequel and a sequel..for life of me cant understand why they keep tinkering with 7 instead most tinkerable game that is 8
i agree with your argument, the only counter-argument i can think of this: by having an unambiguous afterlife via the lifestream, death is only a stepping stone to an alternate mode of being. thus whether or not, a ''dead'' character is in the lifestream or an alternative timeline, matters not on some ultimate level.
@Zack Keogh yes, the novels that were written purely to retcon the original to give them licence to milk the franchise for 20 odd years with spin offs etc. if it’s not in the original game, I don’t consider it canon.
I love FF8, even though I never fully understood the story at the time. Glad you mentioned the remaster look of Squall, looks nothing like the og character. So was SeeD pronounced "SEED" or "CD"?
I pronounced it 'Seed', but I am the worst person to ask haha. I feel like I pronounced every FF town or character wrong until I discovered the Internet.
Hey Orion, I hope you don't mind - I used about a minute from this video (and another minute from "Every FFVIIR Argument CRUSHED") in a video I just uploaded to my channel - a long essay critiquing Remake's ending and all the storytelling issues associated with it. If you have 3 hours to spare, I hope you enjoy it, as someone who is also passionate about good storytelling. The clips are at 10:33 and 1:21:23.
No way. Let me fix it. The game is about time. The game should start the same as 1st game. Except little things are off. Questis role is played by a new character as well as Zell, selphie, and Irvine. The story plays mostly the same until the assassination scene. The new character to replace Irvine still misses and squall fights Edea. Except after her demise everything stops and begins to melt away and squall is nearly defeated here. That's when the actual original cast joins him with heals and the facade melts away, and ultimecia comes through. Then you realize its not a remake but a sequel.
If someone from Square Enix ever read my comment, and if you are planning to actually remake FFVIII (which I deeply wish for), please, PLEASE base the character models of the remake on the ones from the original cut scenes of the game, not on this horrible Dissidia or remastered design.
The whispers would be better suited for a ff8 remake, as it's the game that has time travel. Though the whispers suck and shouldn't be in any game, just left on the ideas board.
I disliek time travel. I really curiso what was the catalyst that make the dev make 7 remake this game we have now Now there selft sabotages trying to UP the og game ,
If ff8 remake comes out and you then make an angry video because there are no whispers in it, you will successfully create a time paradox and destroy the fabric of content reality.
I just ran a marathon of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster and then all of the recent remasters through to Final Fantasy X, many of the games I’d never played before. I found that my favourite FF games were the even numbered ones. The odd numbered games weren’t bad, but I found they were more slowly paced and had a ton of fluff, some of them felt like they ran a lot longer than they needed to. And while FF7 almost broke the trend, toward the end of the game (Temple of the Ancients, ancient City, unconscious cloud, etc…) the game began feeling very poorly paced. Of the even numbered FF games, it’s hard to pick a favourite, but I found myself exhausting the content in FF6 and FF8 in particular. I can’t say anything about X yet, as I’m still in progress. FF8 was much like FF6, enjoyable from nearly top to bottom.
Considering that 8 is the Black sheep the golden age i think a remake would work if you were just Expanding the characters and the plot holes with out going to over the top
We don’t want any of that crap in a final fantasy 8 remake. we just want a faithful remake. The remake sequel for 7 was atrocious. The changes to the story was so messy.
I really thought alot what causes these different timelines in FF7. No matter how I spin it, it always boils down to a time paradox. Past, present and future have mixed together. What would a future Sephiroth gain from changing the past? If he's alive in the future, that would mean he's had success in the past. The group should therefore no longer exist. How does Aerith know of her fate in the future? From the stream of life from the past? That would mean that all three timelines, past, present and future are superimposed. The question arises as to who or what is causing this time compression. Sephiroth would be too weak at this point, let alone capable of it. Time has the property of moving through dimensions and is omnipresent. The Final Fantasy universe is separated across dimensions. But connected as a whole. The only character that has the power to move all timelines together is Ultimecia. Let's not forget that Ultimecia initiates the time compression towards the end. In the FF7 dimension, as time moves through the dimensions, all three timelines distort into each other. A devastating time paradox emerges. It's a wild theory. But it connects the Final Fantasy universe.
Nah X-3 will come way eariler than an VIII Remake and most likely a IX Remake will come before VIII too an VIII and IV Remake would be great tho Cecil and Squall would have amazing action scenes and i would love their character getting explored further and the rest of those casts too
While I agree that time meddling entities would have fit better into a FF8 Remake narrative, the problem lies in that it would have to be explained as "some sort of defense mechanism" and would be seen as an unnecessary addition whereas FF7 OG already has this premise built into the narrative in the form of the weapons, many theorists have categorized the Harbinger of Fate and by extension the Whispers as being the weapon responsible for seeing out the will of the lifestream (Minerva), the defense mechanism detail fits into this narrative automatically and isn't forced, as far as weapons go this is just one that we never saw in the OG FF7, but they've been hinted at in every piece of media as the "cries of the planet", there are other weapons in other properties within the FF7 compilation such as Zarkoniad and Omega which also were not in the OG but serve a purpose of their own within the universe. In my opinion the reason the Whispers work in the FF7 Remake is that it IS a sequel, and it's not a forced sequel, it's the continuation of a story that we've always known was incomplete, ever since that Derge of Cerberes secret cutscene with Genesis we've always known that the FF7 compilation needed one more entry.
FF7 never needed any sequels or compilation entries. The story was complete and came full circle with the planet surviving, the very objective throughout.
@@ItsSVO you're referring to the OG game which I could probably agree with, but I'm referring to the compilation with Derge of Cerberes at the end of it leaving the door open with more questions
"Squall dies, referencing the lamest ff theory of all time..." 🤣 ok, that really got me. (Honestly, all the fan theories just sound stupid to me) But seriously, I've been feeling like the whispers stuff would have been better suited to FF8 for a while now. Glad I'm not the only one thinking the whole time-wigglies crap is being applied to the wrong FF remake. Not that I would want Squeenix to touch any of the older Final Fantasies. In fact, I'd like it if they just stop. Stop messing with the classics. Just.... stop it.
Question, i already forgot the events in ff7 og. But did we really see biggs wedge and jessie's actual dead bodies in the og, or did we just assume that they died when the plate fell?
@@mrskye08 wedge comes crashing down from high atop shares some dying words then flatline dead, biggs as ur climbing the staircase option to hear whatever he says then flatline dead same deal for jessie as well all 3 of them died never to comeback during the climb to the control tower up to fight with barrett so yea in the original they were blatant and clear that those three died bodies and all as oppose to the remake
The plate very graphically falls down on the entirety of Sector 7 when all three were still around the Sector 7 support pillar with various degrees of what are clearly severe/mortal injuries, with none of them being anywhere close to being able to get out of sector 7 in time. So yeah it's totally obvious in the original game that they died. There's also no suggestion that much of anyone else in Sector 7 survived the plate collapse. It's not like Burmecia and Cleyra in FF9 where you get scattered refugees.
We know they’re dead because the plate fell. The difference in the OG is that the plate collapsing actually crushed the whole of sector 7, unlike remake where it broke a couple of windows and shop signs killing nobody.
Yes, but FF7 is a more popular game and the demand for the remake pushed the business forward to make that decision. It’s also about making the right business move. If it doesn’t make money, SE will suffer a big loss and result not making further games.
I played pretty much all of them from nes,gb,gba,ds,snes, switch, psp,ps1234 the villian in this one is insane HAS GF TO PULLS THE PLANETS TOGETHER WITCH KOs FF7 AND THE MAIN GOAL IS TO CONQUER ALL TIME LINES .LIKEKANG THE CONQUERED FINAL CLIP IN MARVEL WITCH THEY ARE ONE BUT DIFFERENT IN TIME AND ITS FINAL GOAL ALL TIME COMPRESSION TO TURN HERSELF IN GOD SEEN THE PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE BUT IN HER OWN 4TH DEMISION CONTROLLING ALL.
FF 8 in my opinion is better than 7 it took me out of reality and gave me an unbelievable feeling playing it when I was young the music, characters and story was a masterpiece and come on GunBlade Man!!!!
Im not through this video yet, but you NAILED (and i mean NAILED) the "remake" point of view. I played (and dored) FFVII on PS1, but what they are doing is not a remake per se'. It is a re-imaginatiin of the story, which i do not believe is aimed at the (real) original fans of the game/story. I feel that (we) want the same game with updated audio and visuals, but what we got is a marketing ploy to make more money by attracting new players/interest. Just make a new FF for that!!! "Remake" is not geared or created for die-hard fans. It is another scheme to drag every last penny out out of our pockets as we all (continue to hope for) Square Enix to actually LISTEN to what we (actually) want. Im here for FFVIII, but.... ....Aaagh!!
I think you just don't understand Final Fantasy VII honestly. The themes are about the meaning of life, legacy, memories, the end of the world, destiny and fate, and accepting things outside your control. The changes to the remake don't contradict the themes of the original game, they just up the stakes. FF7 Remake is not about time travel or timelines, it is about the reincarnation of the cosmos and its life streams. That's why Cloud and Sephiroth fight in a place called the "Edge of Creation." Sephiroth knows that the world is dying (again a very clear theme in the original game with the mako pollution and the summoning of Meteor), and in order for him to prevent his own demise, he must stop that as he needs the world to exist, in order for himself to exist. He keeps trying to stop the inevitability of death (whereas Aerith embraces that, and it is why she is able to defeat him.) The Whispers are the black lifestream. They consume the cosmos of its life, and then it is reborn and reincarnated. This theme is pretty central to FF7. People die, and return to the lifestream, but their legacy continues, even in death. In FF7, the meaning of life is derived from the inevitability of death, because it ensures you MUST take actions within your life to leave a legacy that will live on in other people in their memories. Sephiroth is trying to disrupt that, he leaves a negative legacy by terrorising Cloud, to ensure that he doesn't die. The exact opposite of what he should be doing. But I definitely think an FF8 remake would be amazing. I think it's the game that could most benefit from being recreated as the narrative was a bit of a mess, the love story could have been done better, and the combat system is utterly broken. There are some great ideas though such as merging the card game with a crafting system utilising GF abilities like Item Refine and Card Mod.
Despite thinking you are wrong when you keep insisting the themes are undermined, I definitely agree that FFVIII is the one FF that is MOST deserving of a Remake. It aged the least gracefully IMO. FF7 Remake would probably prove to be the most financially successful though. I hope it does well enough such that they start looking at 8 next.
I love all FF titles, some less than others… but I am still surprised by how many people disagree with FF7R even being made. As someone who played the OG only two years after its release (and loved it at the time), I will unashamedly admit that I much more enjoy the Remake so far. I finally feel a real connection to the characters that I couldn’t feel as much in the OG due to the horrendous character models and bad translation (mind you, I cried, laughed, and was torn apart emotionally while playing the Mother series, so it has nothing to do with older game graphics). I think most people are way too hard on Remake. Calling people fanboys for loving it also seems like a really empty insult. I don’t know… I’m expecting to be ripped apart for loving it 🤷♀️ do what you will, I suppose P.S. Chrono Trigger is in my top five favorite games of all time, and I would STILL give an arm and a leg to see it remade, even if that meant that some elements of the story were drastically changed. I will ALWAYS be excited by a reinvention, so long as the game is fun, nicely made, and plays smooth (and feels like a cohesive game, and I fully believe Remake checks all those boxes).
You guys have to realize the amount of effort, content and time it would take to remake a classic like this one would be a hard ask of Kitase. After FF7 that team is pretty much done. Smoked.
It will take 5 years to make a good remake of this game. It could be on PS4 but then it will be PS7. Hardware grows faster than making a good game (which is why current games are so weak).
My god the nostalgia I would feel seeing ff8 being remade. My first ever FF growing up. The music is unbelievable
It sounds like a ff8 remake would have been a better choice then ff7 when comes to all the timetravel and changes
A prequel in time of Adel easily could accomplish this or a sequel that seeks end the time cycle indefinitely
@@theerealatm and what happened to Raine
very much bro. since b4, when i was a kid. i dont like ff7. year 2000 and ff8 is the best game and most famous in ps1. i start playing when i was 13 yrs old. and now im 38. i still buy ps5 if they will make a ff8 remake =) it will be great and many players like me will buy and play because it is full of memories.
I’ve been banging this drum for years. FF8 deserves the FF7RE treatment way more than FF7. There’s SO much they can improve upon
No you are wrong bro 7 is just where it should be, but that said 8 should be right behind 7 these were the two best ff games made hands down
@@codysmith9695ff 8 is just the better game when it comes to story. Ff7 is just more popular....
@theerealatm no way bro, ff7's story is amazing, but I do also love ff8. They are so closely tied imo that chronological order is the best way to remake them. I really hope to see them both fully remade and completed in my life time.
@@codysmith9695 we aint your bro
I would pay top dollar for a FFVIII remake!
This is easily my favourite Final Fantasy channel I always look forward to an upload ^__^
Dude. Your FF8 with Whispers sounds dope.
I've always felt that FF8 was the most in need of a proper remake or even re-imagining. The script has the makings of greatness but it falls short. It needs a total revision to refine its best ideas.
I agree they could change some things but they better include all the same moments that made this game great and enhance them to make them better.
One example is when Squall is carrying rinoa on the train tracks on his own
Come to think of it. How do they do squalls inner thoughts at that part in a remake. Those inner thoughts are crucial
Huge FF8 fan here, and I wholeheartedly aggree👍
Only caveat I would have is whether or not the whispers would prevent me from playing cards at crucial moments😂
The whispers are the rules you accidentally spread throughout the region 😂
@@ItsSVO The whispers in this case is a Noun meaning capitalize your words m8
They would prevent Squall from playing cards with Ellone for sure, while Rinoa floats in space all alone xD
As an old FF8 fan, I really like your ideas for an FF8 full proper remake.
True, there are lots of things, which should be revisited, like the junction system or the general combat system, character developement and especially Laguna's character to flesh out more,
add more background information, make the characters more likeable.
They never going to do this and if they do they going to mess Squall up and give him that Dissidia NT feminine look 😔
I heard that 9 will be next. So tired of 8 not getting the respect it deserves
Your videos are a pleasure to watch, as always. Not always what you say, but also the way you explain it. Keep up with the good work!
One day 🙌
Every time SE makes a remake I'm like "Oh boy, what did they change or remove?"
The time travel and msnipulation plot in FF7 remake would have made more sense in FF8.
A plot where Ultimecia is fully aware of the time loop that will inevitably defeat her and tries to break it.
... and also has much more presence throughout the game and more character
Damn, I'm absolutely onboard with all of this!
knowing what we know about modern Square , and the ridiculous amount of abuse they put their flagship, nostalgia cash-cow franchise...
I want the 8 remake so bad man
You deserve so much more in the way of subscribers man.
Thanks Jordan! While new subs are great, I'm really grateful to people like your good self who still come back to check out the channel.
31:53 - My personal guess/armchair observation is that there are four main reasons why people are giving FF7R a free pass:
1) A lot of players think: "I HAVE to love this game because its FF7."--a sense of obligation/commitment.
All I care about is triple triad and awesome summons. On another note we need a Vagrant story, Drakengard or Xenogears game
I genuinely laughed at that jab at the Squall is dead theory 😂
PS: There is one argument that you left wide open that I think you should address in the future: the game is not a Remake, but a sequel, which opens the door for challenging your Days of Future Past point.
What's done is done, let's all focus on the future.'
The best argument against the Remake is that the people who made it appear to be telegraphing through Aerith's V/O that they're embarassed by it.
@@anthroposmetron4475 That's a fantastic point, and I agree wholeheartedly. For me, you can essay as much as you like, I'm a longman myself. ;P
Just about the only umabiguously good thing to happen to the FF7 fandom in recent years is how much that one has slid off.

haven't finished the video yet, but a ff8 remake with changes similar to what they did in 7 wouldn't be such a bad idea and would actually fit the narrative quite nicely i think.
Great video as always orion, and some excellent points too!

If they can remake it completely faithful to the story, with graphics precisely like un the FVM scenes, and perhaps some minor gameplay & quality of life improvements, I'll throw my whole wallet at them.
*faithful to the story and characters and dialogues etc.
FF8 Remake could make sense for a lot of reasons. Like you said, time travel and weird meta narratives would fit better with the style of story in FF8 plus that will give them a chance to fix the awful junction and magic draw system.
We need you, the new trailer is out and I nearly had a stroke.

They are just ass pulling shit now.
I've never been so mad at a game before.
Square Enix can't remake a game to save their lives. I'm happy for FFVIII to be remade as long as it's not square working on it
God, I love this game so much despite its flaws, but i agree with you the whispers prob would have been better utilized in this game, not sure if we will ever get a ff8 remake, and not sure how that would go, if they change it as radically as ff7r, not sure it would work as well, as some of the story/character elements could be fleshed out better or told better due to dialogue/translation issues back in the day, as there is some scenes with squall and rinoa /quistis that make more sense in Japanese translation that dont make sense in English, and make for more compelling story plots, so i think they should work on this, and update the combat to fall in line similar to ff7r, thanks for covering this game, it doesnt get the love it so rightly deserves
If I ever see the ballroom dance scene remastered, I’ll cry big grown-up tears.
At least with a modern remake, someone can bring Irvine a portable phone battery so we can see the full ending. 😅

just make the ff8 remake, i loved the mix between mordern and industrial styles. the junction system can be fixed, the great heyne explored, maybe trabia before it gets nuked. bigger timber and FH.
great video couldn't agree more with this alot of great talking points and examples brought up if the time travel meta commentary idea was gonna be used then I feel like it would been better justified on a game like ff8 compared to ff7 which was a game that already felt complete with its storyline and has nothing to do with time travel at all.
Lol 8 is perfect choice you dont even need remake it is open ended setup for a prequel and a sequel..for life of me cant understand why they keep tinkering with 7 instead most tinkerable game that is 8
Given that, somewhat like the original ff, this game had a major time component to the story...imagine that being worked into a remake
i agree with your argument, the only counter-argument i can think of this: by having an unambiguous afterlife via the lifestream, death is only a stepping stone to an alternate mode of being. thus whether or not, a ''dead'' character is in the lifestream or an alternative timeline, matters not on some ultimate level.
@Zack Keogh yes, the novels that were written purely to retcon the original to give them licence to milk the franchise for 20 odd years with spin offs etc. if it’s not in the original game, I don’t consider it canon.
I totally agree with you. I said this before you did but not in a 39:44 minute vid. You explained it well.
Seed there students for hire to help in any conflict in the world best final fantasy
I would say "seed". It makes more sense with being soldiers of a garden😂
Yes, Whispers are a universally bad idea. Even if they showed up in a brand new story and not part of a remake, I'd still not like them.
Hey man, I don't mind at all! I'm travelling for a few days but will definitely check out the vid when I get back. Thank you.
I am Playing a Game that had a Gunblade Class weapon called Slayer and i am reminded of FF 8 Remake that could be at the works rn.
8 is the one that needs the remake. Story was never fleshed out and it has a mad ceiling.
FF8 remake would have to give Ellone a major role if they want to implement time travel.
I disliek time travel. I really curiso what was the catalyst that make the dev make 7 remake this game we have now
Now there selft sabotages trying to UP the og game ,
The catalyst was money.
If ff8 remake comes out and you then make an angry video because there are no whispers in it, you will successfully create a time paradox and destroy the fabric of content reality.
I love FF 8's first CD. And then their money ran out I guess.
okay just hear me out; Chronotrigger
Finished FF8 like 6 times, its.my first FF game. Id like a more detailed FF8 game.with more.background
Considering that 8 is the Black sheep the golden age i think a remake would work if you were just Expanding the characters and the plot holes with out going to over the top
That would be so cool. Great memories.
We don’t want any of that crap in a final fantasy 8 remake. we just want a faithful remake. The remake sequel for 7 was atrocious. The changes to the story was so messy.
We call them upgrades and extensions to story
im late but i dont want them to do to ff8 what they did to ff7 with the remake, i am probably in the minority though.
Ur not alone after seeing how ff7 went I don't want anymore remakes of ff games
If SE does do a remake, it has to be a open world game, if I remember currently, Biggs, Wedge and Jessie all died in the original FFVII
They don't need to do a remake. I'd instead want a prequel with laguna and company sealing the sorcerer. That would be a fun game
If FF8 gets remade I will have truly seen everything lol
Remastered/Port.
Square Enix: FFVII, FFIX, FFX, FFXII..............FFVIII Remastered.
Remake.
Square Enix: FFVII Remake, FFIX Remake, FFX Remake...............................................................FFVIII Remake.
Nah X-3 will come way eariler than an VIII Remake and most likely a IX Remake will come before VIII too
an VIII and IV Remake would be great tho Cecil and Squall would have amazing action scenes and i would love their character getting explored further and the rest of those casts too
FF8 the only game in FF franchise that i play and it's began to be my only favourite FF game ever.
(Honestly, all the fan theories just sound stupid to me)
But seriously, I've been feeling like the whispers stuff would have been better suited to FF8 for a while now. Glad I'm not the only one thinking the whole time-wigglies crap is being applied to the wrong FF remake. Not that I would want Squeenix to touch any of the older Final Fantasies. In fact, I'd like it if they just stop. Stop messing with the classics. Just.... stop it.
After seeing how ff7 has come out I don't want anymore remakes of ff games escpecially when this is there approach to remaking games
I hope they remake the ff8
Your right
In Corneo’s Sewers. It was obvious it’s song was similar to FF8’s sewers ☝️
Question, i already forgot the events in ff7 og. But did we really see biggs wedge and jessie's actual dead bodies in the og, or did we just assume that they died when the plate fell?
In og ff7 we saw them die during that battle that took place before the plate collapse even meeting jessie as she's dying on the stairs
@@nyhtfall1969 like sure flatline dead? Or "no longer responding must be dead let's move on" type of dead?
I think that would probably be for the best at this point. RIP Squaresoft.
Yeah 7 remake is something but 8 remake could be even more.
FF 8 in my opinion is better than 7 it took me out of reality and gave me an unbelievable feeling playing it when I was young the music, characters and story was a masterpiece and come on GunBlade Man!!!!
Ff8 top tier I'm.guna play it again after ff16
He keeps trying to stop the inevitability of death (whereas Aerith embraces that, and it is why she is able to defeat him.)
The Whispers are the black lifestream.
I don’t know… I’m expecting to be ripped apart for loving it 🤷♀️ do what you will, I suppose
