Yeah man, it's just unbelievable that they weren't even nominated. Both Dafoe's and Pattinson's performances are some of the best I've ever seen in a movie.
"Fix us up some coffee. Long night ahead. Drop o' coffee do us good..." Me and another guy reference this movie often. Whenever we do 16 hour shifts and it's late at night, we drop that line as soon as we get stir crazy or mad tired.
I remember when I used to work around the clock and then some. 30 hour shifts. The Maddening, is what we called them shifts. I used to bang up speed around hour 24 and so did my other guy. We danced in the night... Oh how we froliced in the cold moonlight... That was before them laws banning over 16 hour shifts at the day care center. The children were entranced with our monologues in the early hours of the second day of the shift.. I can still see their eyes, glistening, hanging on to my slurred words. Their mouths saying: "please, let us go bad man". But we werent bad, we was just doin our job
3:25 The way Dafoe's entire self suddenly embodies shame is pretty incredible. And then 3:50 could be a painting; such a perfect visual representation of the shame of the perpetrator and the indignation of the offended.
Pattinson's shadow at 3:24 is crooked, the head bent more to the side in an animalistic, aggressive manner than he's actually standing. That's what Defoe is reacting to.
he does the same dominant stance after he nearly kills Thomas. After a rewatch I thought Thomas knew what would happen as if they’d been on an endless loop in purgatory.
Robert Pattinson deserves his role in this amazing movie after having to suffer through being in Twilight. He really shines with Willem Dafoe every moment he’s on screen
Lol Robert Pattinson was ALWAYS a FANTASTIC actor even before than due to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with his fantastic performance as Cedric entirely so to one of the PEAKS of his career as establishing himself as the BEST Batman ever made! He was ALWAYS a magnificent actor, even with those twilight movies out as those movies existing were NOT his fault at all.
After seeing this scene for the first time I wondered why dafoe reacted to winslow the way he did, after he slapped him. Then I looked more closely at pattinson's shadow. Huge, pitch black, and stretching high above both of them, to the roof. The angle of the roof makes it look like the shadows head is cocked, in either a mad or violent pose. It's like a characterization of winslow's inner rage, and his capacity to commit violence. And dafoe recognized that, perhaps in that moment he knew he would die by winslow's hand?
I dont think it was really meant to symbolize anything but to look erie. I do love how atmospheric that scene is. After getting slapped Pattinson stands there silently with his fists balled up. Dafoe in order to ease tension says to make coffee because it would be a long night for them. Then cut to a wide shot in the cold and dark room. I love it.
dafoe's reaction does seem like he is fearing for his life. im not convinced it's patinsons shadow specifically, but it certainly adds atmosphere. it might just be his recognition of patinson as an adversary that will not listen to him, and what that will entail.
I actually love black and white films it gives it that certain vibe of gloom and daunting atmosphere it can really set the tone and everything for a film I actually studied film for a few months I was never able to complete it got really difficult but I Wana do it again someday or maybe a lower qualification

The most popular take is that both Thomas Wake and the lighthouse are a part of Winslows purgatory. He killed a man and therefore is in purgatory, maybe he had the ability to repent himself but ultimately he killed the seagull which proved he was not worthy and led to everything that happened right up until the ending. Winslow reaches for the light, for God if you will, but gets thrown down the staircase. All the way to hell and is left there to suffer permanently (getting his guts pecked by the gulls). Of course it's just an interpretation, but to me it's the coolest one.
Good take on the film, I think William Defoe's character is fearful of anyone killing the seabirds as he is convinced they are dead sailors reincarnated, unusual for reincarnation as a human can ever only reincarnate as another human, according to most intrepretations. This could tie into your take of him being dead and in Purgatory as well, The mermaid could also be an existent entity in the film.
That would be correct for early American English - especially in seafaring communities where this kind of dialect still lingers in isolated patches today.

Something I love about this scene after Wake slaps Thomas ,you can see Thomas's ready to slug him , Wake realises he's pushed the wrong button's and gives ah "Oh Crap" look. He's visibly terrified of this young man he initially thought was a push over . He then weakly tries to diffuse the situation by asking Thomas to make them coffee because they've got a long night ahead of them. The added touch of him trying to eat yet it sloppily dropping out of his mouth as he's clearly uneasy and panicking is a nice touch by Willem Dafoe . It's a cross between him being too scared to square up to Thomas and stick by his guns, and being too macho to apologise out loud.
Also note the reaction shot of Winslow at 3:23 and how it focuses on his shadow. If you look closely, Winslow's stance does not match up with his shadows, the latter having a much more deranged and unnatural pose with crooked shoulders and a torqued neck. This may be part of the reason that Wake becomes so intimidated.
aint they supposed to have alternating shifts, one sleeps while other tends the light, how come he can fix coffee for both of em if only one will be awake through the long night
After Wake slaps him, Winslow's shadow looms in a way that resembles several amazing things. The center of the shadow grows markedly darker, due to the brilliant contrast techniques they used, and the shadow suddenly resembles a massive pupil (like a giant squid or whale's) and the sight you are met with when you are underwater, at night, looking downward into deep water. If you've ever experienced either of these firsthand, as Wake likely had during some stormy journey, you might also be struck by primal, lip-quivering fear. No air to breathe. Nothing to grab on to. Nothing to feel but fear, cold, and pain. The great unknown, given shape. You open your eyes and try to discern where the surface might be, saltwater be damned, and you see nothing but pitched darkness. A flash of lightning illuminates the night sky for a brief second, and suddenly you're not alone, as an eyeball the size of your vision invites your brain to start reeling in sheer panic. "Pay me no mind..." prayed Thomas Wake, averting his eyes. When he struck Winslow, Wake slipped. He went overboard. Not just figuratively, but metaphorically. Wake went overboard, suddenly plunging into the deep end of Winslow's past. He realizes he's bitten off more than he can chew as Winslow's shadow becomes the only thing he fears, the seemingly bottomless abyss of the sea. He reflexively begins to gasp for air as his throat becomes numb, food tumbling out of his mouth like precious air bubbles would if he were drowning. It's a psychological horror movie about their mental deterioration when stranded on an island. It's supposed to be a creative take on Edgar Allen Poe's final poem about a lighthouse which was never finished.
I've said this before but Ill say it again, the Oscars doesn't mean anything it's an overrated award , these two did an amazing job at this movie and everyone knows that, no need to make this movie more mainstream as it's a masterpiece the way it is
At the same Independent Spirit Awards show that Willem Defoe got best male support, Adam Sandler summed it up best in his speech for winning best male lead: "A few weeks back when I was quote-unquote snubbed by the Academy, it reminded me when I briefly attended high school and was overlooked for the coveted yearbook superlative category 'Best Looking.' That accolade was given to a jean-jacket-wearing feathered hair douchebag by the name of Skipper Jenkins. But my classmates did honor me with the allegedly less prestigious designation of 'Best Personality.' And tonight as I look around this room I realize the Independent Spirit Awards are the best personality awards of Hollywood. So then let all those feather-haired douchebag motherfuckers get their Oscars tomorrow night. Their handsome good looks will fade in time, while our independent personalities will shine on forever!"
I believe this movie to be a repeating continuous hell for both men which is why Wake was so afraid here.He returned to sanity for that brief moment and remembered just what was going on. I think hes aware this whole time and his last wiki he keeps referring to was always Thomas.
I watched this movie in the theater because of this scene right here! I died laughing 😂 when he gets up and gives him that crazy look. I couldn't get enough!
God's this movie is art. The shadow of the man who was struck how it looms over the two of them, kept restrained for too long it begins to grow restless and angry, so angry.
I think of this scene whenever I spot a seagull now..... and I think, THAT is what makes a great movie. When it leaves a little piece of it in you; when your mind recalls a scene or phrase from the film when you're just out living your life. It leaves an impact, however small
Its almost like he wanted him to believe him about the light -and then he didnt believe him about the bird til he went and killed 1 - then it made the light all the more enticing
So weird you said so. I watched this film and read that poem and drank a bottle of brandy all in the same day. Terrifying experience never to be repeated
Just incredible. Very few clips have me so completely captivated as I was in this one...why are neither of these gentlemen up for actor/supporting actor
1:09 “A mutiny it were.” Dafoe flawlessly portrayed the look of a bully who is so full of crap. Followed by Pattinson’s face that seemed to say “Sure, I believe you.” 😆 What a shame that this masterpiece was snobbed by the Academy.
It’s scary to look at it through again and notice how his shadow is very dark and looms over with a crooked neck giving that evil feel and energy.. and how Willem’s guy is petrified by it as it shows his mouth quivers in fear. really is terrifying in that way.
The acting is so above and beyond anything in the joker. Kinda shows you yet again how silly the Oscars are. This film and everything from the acting, to the dialogue, to the cinematography, to the story, to basically everything that makes a film great, deserves all the praise it gets.
Idk why this just hit me, especially when it's such a core theme of the movie. They are up all night because they have to tend the light. God who hear'st the surges roll,
Deign to save our suppliant soul."
Willem Dafoe is such an amazing actor.. truly one of the great of the greats. wow.
I can't wait to see this movie. I've seen all the trailers and several clips and I still have literally no idea what the movie is even about.
It's a psychological horror movie about their mental deterioration when stranded on an island. It's supposed to be a creative take on Edgar Allen Poe's final poem about a lighthouse which was never finished.
I watched the whole movie and still have no idea what it's about...shits crazy lol
I think it's about guilt.
Isolation
Stop watching the clips man, savour it later, it's worth it
Why tf weren't these actors nominated for awards?
This is one of those movies that makes me miss my dad. Wish I could have watched it with him.
Dafoe as Thomas Wake is one of my favourite acting roles ever. I can't get enough of it.
I hope Defoe at least gets an oscar nom...how brilliant...and nails the accent
Dafoe is so good here, I forgot he was even acting.
For the love of Neptune, it's a crime against Humanity Willem Dafoe hasn't won the Oscar for this performance.
I believe this movie to be a repeating continuous hell for both men which is why Wake was so afraid here.He returned to sanity for that brief moment and remembered just what was going on. I think hes aware this whole time and his last wiki he keeps referring to was always Thomas.
"Doldrums. Doldrums"
"Boredom makes men to villans and the water goes quick, lad, vanished."

@@thecollector427 ...Stupid.
Out with it, lad.
If he wanted to, Defoe could be the sweetest Santa. But there's always the constant risk of him suddenly turning it into a nightmare for giggles.
These guys -- both of them -- were AMAZING!!!
This is the greatest acting of all time ... how didn't Dafoe get a nomination ......
That slap takes me out every time 😂😂
😂😂😂 same lmao
Bad cooking or not, these dinner scenes make me hungry. Something about the way they fidget with their forks and knives...
idk but it looks delicious tho.. reminds me of half assed potatoes, onion and chopped bacon in a pan i would make after work
I think of this scene whenever I spot a seagull now..... and I think, THAT is what makes a great movie. When it leaves a little piece of it in you; when your mind recalls a scene or phrase from the film when you're just out living your life. It leaves an impact, however small
My favorite part of the video is when Green Goblin just casually smacks Batman upside the head for talking back
Its almost like he wanted him to believe him about the light -and then he didnt believe him about the bird til he went and killed 1 - then it made the light all the more enticing
Reminds me "The rime of the ancient mariner".
So weird you said so. I watched this film and read that poem and drank a bottle of brandy all in the same day. Terrifying experience never to be repeated
Watching this scene for the 2nd time makes the movie much more understandable I have to say. Everything you see afterwards makes more sense now.

That expression is literally hilarious , he looked like , “are you fucken playing with me rn -__- “
Just incredible. Very few clips have me so completely captivated as I was in this one...why are neither of these gentlemen up for actor/supporting actor
The language is extraordinary. That West country English DeFoe is speaking is spectacular.
I like this new remake for the misadventures of flapjack
Watching this, knowing now that this is supposed to be an interpretation of Proteus and Prometheus, kinda blows my mind.
1:09 “A mutiny it were.” Dafoe flawlessly portrayed the look of a bully who is so full of crap. Followed by Pattinson’s face that seemed to say “Sure, I believe you.” 😆
What a shame that this masterpiece was snobbed by the Academy.
Watched this scene so many times and its still timeless
It’s scary to look at it through again and notice how his shadow is very dark and looms over with a crooked neck giving that evil feel and energy.. and how Willem’s guy is petrified by it as it shows his mouth quivers in fear. really is terrifying in that way.
Dafoe to the Academy
*”Yer fond on me actin’ ain’t ye? I seen it. Yer fond of me actin’”*
The acting is so above and beyond anything in the joker. Kinda shows you yet again how silly the Oscars are. This film and everything from the acting, to the dialogue, to the cinematography, to the story, to basically everything that makes a film great, deserves all the praise it gets.
I loved Joker and the acting was superb in it.. but this movie offers something much more raw, despite what many would say.
@@TheThing2011 Couldn't agree more, love this film. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARK!
Women seeing someone they know at the supermarket: "nows the time for gab and chatter"
The cinematography in this film was incredible. If only 1917 was released a different year.
Idk why this just hit me, especially when it's such a core theme of the movie. They are up all night because they have to tend the light. I've worked night shifts and damn that shit is taxing to your mental health. Pair that with the isolation and boredom they deal with? Being a lighthouse keeper would've sucked lol
0:36 He said FortNIGHT for all you lil kids out there
i know it’s a joke but still shut the fuck up.. please
Yaaaaaas gamer reference 😎
Cattywampus what?
The word just means two weeks, if you didn’t know.
>Slaps the shit out of employee
>Refuses to elaborate or apologize
>Tells him to make coffee

Man, that reminds me of my grandfather. He was a fisherman. The way this old gard had to act the man of the house (herrschaft) while still being humble and submit to the authority of social convention for his wrongdoings.
I hope this guy got some praise for writing this crazy dialogue, I don’t even recognize some of the words used haha
Wish all screenings of this film would have included subtitles, found it very difficult to understand the accents
