The film made me think of, despite there being three of them, the episode where Sponebob and Squidward go out to sea with Mr.Krabs to fish. As the time goes on Mr. Krabs starts going insane and ends ups with being eaten with only his head and arm left. Classic!

It's always fun to see actors who start with relatively shit movies grow so much. I'd have never thought he'd be such a great actor, back when he became famous with Twilight.
Willem Dafoe reaffirming my theory that people with real talent have no bullshit about them. He's not evasive or moody or dark in interviews, there's no pretence. Open about the process, talks about it in ways that shows you he has put a tremendous amount of thought into it.
Dont see the correlation between being genuinely talented and being way high up your own ass about, hes humble but it doesnt mean that people who brag about themselves or think highly are not talented

The lobster was just an excuse. He had been waiting to say all of that ever since Tommy (not Winslow) killed the seagull. It is also curious to note that the curse was placed on the wrong name. Winslow was a false name, and Tommy thus tricked the old man into misplacing the curse. This adds to the notion that Pattinson's character is, in a sense, Prometheus.
There’s a mythological angle, but it’s also closely linked to the theme of male insecurity in this film. The lobster, and Wake’s emphasis on its acceptance, is kind of phallic in nature. As such, Winslow/Tommy’s degrading of it has almost a castrating effect on Wake. Any time a character is intimidated in this film, there is a need to try and assert their male dominance. Consider also the proximity of this speech to the almost make out scene of the film. Plus a Lighthouse is kind of just a massive dick

I stopped hearing it sometimes, rewatching the film I realised it was almost always in the background, but I had not noticed sometimes. Didn't think about it afterwards, then I was going to sleep listing to "seaside rain" as a sleep aid, after a while a distant fog horn sounded and I practicly jumped out of bed! Great sound design that definatly got under my skin.

The Lighthouse is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Robert Pattinson has come such a long way since Twilight and has matured as an actor. And Willem Dafoe's monologue/curse without blinking his eyes is some of the best acting I've ever seen. Robert Eggers is a brilliant director. He has The Witch under his belt, and now this. This guy and Ari Aster are ones to watch In the future!

The guy from the 50 Shades movies is going through the same situation. He's actually quite a decent actor but those movies will forever follow the poor man. The female actress did wonderfully in the Suspiria remake, so it just proves they were in bad movies, not necessarily that they're bad actors.

no way it means to me, horror isnt about being scary, the entire movie was unsettling to me and once you figure out the true story to the film, it actually is kinda scary to think about. It can still have humour, its my favourite HORROR film next to The Shining

That monologue felt like Dafoe telling Pattinson "THIS is how you act, son, and you'll do well to remember it" I also find it funny/adorable that Pattinson has this intense, almost angry face(do yall SEE those eyebrows), but he's so soft-spoken and even trips over his words sometimes.
Dafoe should’ve won an award for his role in this film. Dafoe was possessed in the scene where he’s delivering the curse not even blinking not once!! quite academy worthy acting right there.

Willem acknowledging the language and its elevation is one of several reasons why I love him. He's not just an actor, he's very aware and very intelligent. He's also very down to earth and appreciative of the people and the world around him. Robert's acknowledging of the perspective of him and Willem regarding the film is also very interesting. For me, it's obvious the film is a purgatory sort of landscape. The end of which collapses upon Robert with the seagulls and his carrion self. But it's not *inherent* to the film in that if you see otherwise you're not wrong at all.

I don't know, I think the power of the light being transformative, the mermaids whether real or imagined, krakens, and the transformation of Proteus could fall under sci-fi since we don't categorize things under mythology.

Lukas Skywalberg Pattison has had the best acting turn around I’ve ever witnessed. So many good and at least interesting films after twilight. Keep in mind, even when filming Twilight - he’d state his dislike for it in interviews.
The "Alright have it your way" is by far one of my favorite comedy moments on screen from 2019. Horror and comedy are a thin line and boy does this movie jig over it plenty 😂
I'm hearing good rumors that the new Batman is gonna be mainly a detective story and not that action oriented so i think they are gonna use the talent he has very good.I would love a somewhat horror movie of Batman with a good mystery in it. Like the fist story's of the Bats and seeing Pattinson in this movie, it's solidified that idea that he can pull it off.

Brilliant film, especially if you appreciate Jung teachings and the superego. Robert’s acting is truly wonderful, he’s developing marvellously. However it’s Willem’s performance that leaves me in awe, it is utterly captivating, bordering on genius. I’d be surprised if either actor failed to get an Oscar nomination for this work.
I have little familiarity with the teachings of Jung (Ego and Superego) and Freud (the power of the sexual urge on one´s mind) as my grandfather was a psychologist and we talked often and yes by the end i was mesmerized by the movie and how i believe (like you) touched on so many topics/layers of the mind, the conscious, subconscious and even the unconscious one ! Then, as i do with things that find amazing and inspiring, went on a interview binge and find out that Robbert Eggers wife is a psychologist herself and that he likes (Eggers) to see his movies with her wife colleagues as they can see a lot of stuff most people miss. So maybe we are on a path here mate, maybe all of this didn´t happen, and was all in a poor´s man agonizing mind..
The film only got nominated for Best Cinematography. The Academy Awards used to be a ceremony that used to honor the very best. Nowadays its political and if a film gets honored with many nominations that it deserves it's pretty much a miracle. While it would have been cool for Pattinson and Dafoe to be nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, as well as other major awards like Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, the fact this film only got one nomination at the Oscars, will probably reflect how this film will be remembered. I'm sure many films that will win major awards won't be remembered as well as others that didn't receive an award or even a nomination. Some that will be recognized will be looked at as just a favorite of the moment with little to no longevity, while others will be remembered for years to come. I believe The Lighthouse falls in the latter category.
Honestly one of the best horror films I’ve seen in a really long time. If a movie like this can leave me thinking about it for days after I saw it, then it’s an amazing film. I wish there were more movies like this

The film that got me respecting Robert Pattinson as an actor. Dafoe has been among my favourites since Platoon and he has got better with every film since.
willem has such an energy about him, so loving and playful and in awe of his craft. it's so clear to see, when he acts and when he does stuff like this, he's really *in* it for the love of it and so wise about it
Good for Robert for doing a great job in getting away from that "Twilight" stigma. A lot of actors play a part, in a movie and its sequels, and can never really shake off always being seen as that character.
William Dafoe as Thomas Wake is top 5 for me, literally could not imagine someone performing that character any better, i can’t praise the acting in this movie enough

Damn, at around 1:47 when Dafoe was talking you can still hear that accent lingering. I had to Wiki Dafoe just to be sure that he's an American actor; even his residual out-of-character accent sounds real. I'm guessing he's a method actor? Absolutely incredible.

Some go into the entertainment business to become famous, and there are some like Dafoe and Bruce Campbell, who got into it, because they want to act.

There's something so compelling about Willem Dafoe's talking, he seems like such a nice likeable guy. Such a talented actor, same with Robert, his acting career is brilliant. I loved this film so much!

I also find it funny/adorable that Pattinson has this intense, almost angry face(do yall SEE those eyebrows), but he's so soft-spoken and even trips over his words sometimes.
Dafoe should’ve won an award for his role in this film. Dafoe was possessed in the scene where he’s delivering the curse not even blinking not once!! quite academy worthy acting right there.

dafoe talking so passionately about acting is so great to watch. Seeing him talk about his process of acting with that smile and lift in his voice, he’s properly beaming, watching someone talk about something they love so much is such a lovely thing to see
Willem acknowledging the language and its elevation is one of several reasons why I love him. He's not just an actor, he's very aware and very intelligent. He's also very down to earth and appreciative of the people and the world around him. Robert's acknowledging of the perspective of him and Willem regarding the film is also very interesting. For me, it's obvious the film is a purgatory sort of landscape. The end of which collapses upon Robert with the seagulls and his carrion self. But it's not *inherent* to the film in that if you see otherwise you're not wrong at all.
Can we talk about how according to RUclips, The Lighthouse is considered a science fiction film? Because if any film could be the furthest from science fiction, it’s this one.
I don't know, I think the power of the light being transformative, the mermaids whether real or imagined, krakens, and the transformation of Proteus could fall under sci-fi since we don't categorize things under mythology.

Brilliant film, especially if you appreciate Jung teachings and the superego.
Robert’s acting is truly wonderful, he’s developing marvellously.
However it’s Willem’s performance that leaves me in awe, it is utterly captivating, bordering on genius.
I’d be surprised if either actor failed to get an Oscar nomination for this work.

I have little familiarity with the teachings of Jung (Ego and Superego) and Freud (the power of the sexual urge on one´s mind) as my grandfather was a psychologist and we talked often and yes by the end i was mesmerized by the movie and how i believe (like you) touched on so many topics/layers of the mind, the conscious, subconscious and even the unconscious one !
Then, as i do with things that find amazing and inspiring, went on a interview binge and find out that Robbert Eggers wife is a psychologist herself and that he likes (Eggers) to see his movies with her wife colleagues as they can see a lot of stuff most people miss.
So maybe we are on a path here mate, maybe all of this didn´t happen, and was all in a poor´s man agonizing mind..

The film only got nominated for Best Cinematography. The Academy Awards used to be a ceremony that used to honor the very best. Nowadays its political and if a film gets honored with many nominations that it deserves it's pretty much a miracle. While it would have been cool for Pattinson and Dafoe to be nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, as well as other major awards like Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, the fact this film only got one nomination at the Oscars, will probably reflect how this film will be remembered. I'm sure many films that will win major awards won't be remembered as well as others that didn't receive an award or even a nomination. Some that will be recognized will be looked at as just a favorite of the moment with little to no longevity, while others will be remembered for years to come. I believe The Lighthouse falls in the latter category.

willem has such an energy about him, so loving and playful and in awe of his craft. it's so clear to see, when he acts and when he does stuff like this, he's really *in* it for the love of it and so wise about it

Good for Robert for doing a great job in getting away from that "Twilight" stigma. A lot of actors play a part, in a movie and its sequels, and can never really shake off always being seen as that character.

Damn, at around 1:47 when Dafoe was talking you can still hear that accent lingering. I had to Wiki Dafoe just to be sure that he's an American actor; even his residual out-of-character accent sounds real. I'm guessing he's a method actor? Absolutely incredible.
