Just to repair the corrosion around the rear screen is about £3k to do the job right, plus a new rear screen. Parts and labour for the rear discs will be about £2k. Plus thousands more to sort out the rest of the bodywork. These are not cheap cars to run, I know because I own a mint Brooklands myself. It’s a very misleading video that only talks about parts cost but no mention of labour costs.

    • @cstrick
      @cstrick 2 года назад +6

You are absolutely correct. Fix the brakes, the electric issues, starting and suspension first. Then clean everything thoroughly and then and only then decide on what you personally need to fix. Then enjoy the car until you don't.

yeah, the only reason i could think why anyone would sink such time and money into it is if they could do most of the jobs themselves. the cost of parts aint that prohibitive in themselves for what the car is, but the labour would make it unviable.

Am genuinely surprised at the price of those parts, really not too bad at all considering its pedigree. Would be great to see the rust fixed, a tidy up of the front end and the seat fixed. Apart from that and fixing any mechanical faults, I think it should be left alone, its a great looking car as it is.

    No rust!.
Whatever else you do, get the brakes to be 100%. No red warning lights. The system is weird and takes understanding. Use only the silicone fluid either from rolls or the same fluid used by Benz. Glad electrics are good as they can be a nightmare. Have had 9 in my time from a 1953 to the current Brooklands. Favourite was the 65 S3. Got an offer I could not refuse. Currently live in Laramie Wyoming!

Might as well enjoy while you can........ if you can afford the fuel.

@@circusboy90210 This is news to me except for the synthetic fuel development. I'm certainly not anti-science since I have made some of my liberal friends angry by reminding them that electric cars are powered by coal and nuclear energy. That's science they don't like to hear about. I would love to live in a world where ICE engines can still proliferate along side of EV alternatives. Science is telling us the energy problem will not be solved by 'green policies' alone. EVs might be part of the solution, just like solar panels, but they aren't they only answer to our energy needs.

I would love to see you have the rust welded up, properly, no filler, as it’s actually got very little rust aside from the arches, other than the arches and by the rear glass on the right, it’s all basically invisible/not difficult to fix, rockers, and by the rear light near the bumper, they wouldn’t be too hard to fix/you wouldn’t need to be too precise as you don’t see them. Sand and treat some of the rust on the upper right door and such off, doesn’t look terminal to me. Then get the rust repaired areas and sanded/treated areas blended into the original paint, not a full respray as most of the paint is very nice and the double yellow pinstripes are great.
GET IT WAXOILED, you need some sort of cavity rust treatment done on it like dinitrol all over, inside everything, once the corrosion is dealt with. There’s really only one major dent in the rear right door. Bumper inserts would easily make the car look a bit better. Obviously get at least the drivers seat done as well. It’s a quality car and deserves to be preserved.
I don’t think much of the car is nice enough to warrant doing a “full restoration” or a full respray either (unless it’s cheaper to do so AND you can have the pinstripes perfectly duplicated) as if you want lots of it to be 9 or 10 out of 10 you’d be replacing a lot. Most of it is definitely nice enough to just keep it like that. To do a full respray and restoration on a car like this that’s got rust and has been in the rain and mad, you really have to take it completely apart, no sense doing a full respray to the outside of there could be mud and dust inside various panels, trapped, rusting it from the inside.

The brakes should be fabulous. My car car surprised the MOT centre by how powerful the brakes were. I have since had the discs skimmed and the callipers serviced and galvanized so they are far better. You'll need to have the high pressure system checked and probably some Citroen spheres need replaced. However the cars are just brilliant to drive, when they go as intended. Good luck!

They can stand underneath it without raingear, that's a big plus!

Do all the safety items and repair the seat. Other than that, I’d drive it as it is. There is something quite nice about a tatty luxury car

I would fix the underneath and interior only. Leave the rust.

I'm pretty sure I paid more for disc breaks on a Saab 95 than this Bentley ;-( Love this car!

I knew a bloke years ago that had an old Rolls Royce.
When he took it to a restorer is would have cost him 10's of thousands to get it fixed. He sold it quick after that.

Do the lot. 2 grand to catch up on stuff that should have been done gradually over the last couple of decades isn't bad, and it will be a lovely car saved for another few years. Even modest and newish cars can chuck big bills at you without warning, so it doesn't seem too bad to spend a bit of cash on Ron.
