This is why Hyundai/KIA will own the future. Just look at the IONIQ 6 and how well received it has been. And then there is Genesis, relatively affordable ICE and EV luxury that shows Merc a thing or two, even if the front grill on the Genesis 60 looks awful. (Saw and sat in it it at Fully Charged. Interior is very Merc, a good thing.)
This or a Taycan? No contest, the Porsche every time in every category.
This has way more roomy back seats
This car is uglier than the competition, certainly when compared to the Taycan or etron GT but Mercedes are showing up the competition in terms of technology and interior design (though the placement of the buttons on the centre console is a bit odd)
True, Porsche managed to make the taycan a good car. Which just happened to be electric.

It's still impressive how much electric cars have improved in a span of 10 years. Imagine another 10 years, with denser solid state batteries and more compact engines, I'm sure the weight is going to go down a lot.
Imagine we spent that time improving hydrogen instead?

Any propulsion system where you have to convert to another energy carrier is a fad, because that's how you lose efficiency. That's why BEVs are the way forward.

Hydrogen cars still need batteries and motors as well as fuel cells.
The processing of hydrogen isn't particularly efficient either, making it wasteful.
As hydrogen is a gas it has a low density so storing enough for use in a car needs high pressures which is dangerous as hydrogen is explosive. There are alternate hydrogen storage methods that could be safer and prove more fruitful but they may still be under academic or early industry research.
There is an autotrader video discussing why hydrogen has fallen off for now. It's simple but it's enough for the majority to understand. There will also be more in depth videos from the educational content creators.
Hydrogen is a long way off for cars. For larger vehicles, mass transit and energy storage it may be more suitable
The battery size isn’t the limiting factor… it’s the efficiency.. 2 miles per KWh is pants.. if this could do 3.5 miles per kwh, like it’s competitors, then the battery could be 30%+ smaller, saving considerable weight while giving the same range. The weight saving would improve the driving dynamics of this car would massively. Balance of battery size and efficiency is what’s needed for a performance EV vehicle.

When driven economically rather than on a road test, it will easily get more than 3 miles /kWh.

@@AutoTraderTV Wow, that's awful, especially given how streamlined the thing looks. It should be able to achieve well north of 4 mile per kWh like Tesla, Hyundai and Kia do routinely. No excuses really.

Also, it's not just the overall shape that is ugly, all the lines and small details are shit too, as is the case with all the new generation Mercedes bar the G-Class.
Actually it's poor engineering, the lucid air achieves the same drag coefficient with better design and better use of space and better performance at similar or better price.
Mercedes forgot there are something called designers or maybe they fired all their designers.

Given what Lucid is doing with the Air I think Mercedes really could do better with how they designed the car. No frunk AND less interior space in a car roughly the same size is just proof of that

The interior screens and the part for the passenger to play video is awesome. I love it.
Thing is, if I was a passenger, and I have been in as well as owned EVs, I would be enthusiastically keeping an eye on the driver screens to monitor all that telemetry!
They should put a microphone next to the motor and use that noise in the cabin

Just imagine how disgusting the dash will look with all the finger prints! I do not understand the purpose this car serves? Much more expensive, certainly not fun to drive, absolute nightmare for charging, much heavier, way more wear and tear, tires that will die sooner, roads that will damage faster by weight....oh I forgot quite dumb looking as well.

That's the primary issue they're going to have: the excitement from a "performance" electric vehicle more or less only comes from outright speed. You can drive an older Aston Vantage or early Mercedes C63 or Porsche 911 around at 30mph and enjoy the experience from the sounds alone.
The general purpose is for certain people to make a massive amount of money and the government to control your black box.
I think it looks better then the eqs though .
8:27 It's obvious the entire interior was designed to market the useless tech overload instead of practicality. The new Mercedes are probably the least practical interiors right ahead of the new VWs.

The car might be fast, but the "fun" part in driving a car comes from mastering the inputs and the car's reactions to the road. Today's cars are so advanced that driving them is very similar to using a driving sim... you're limited to steering wheel input and accelerator/brake pedal input. Not much to do, frankly. And you can feel the challenge only by going way too fast for it to be reasonable on open roads. Unfortunately if you bring this crop of cars to the track, they'll perform very badly because of their weight. So no, an AMG BEV can't *really* be fun.

100% facts BEV are very practical and very fast but not fun.
I have had a lot of fun with BEVs. It's a different flavor of fun but fun regardless

Ev's are fast but it's only the torque and acceleration that they have going for them. You can't be doing 90 on the streets and expect to have no run ins with police so it's not even worth it.
The lack of any meaningful sound kills it for me. The sound of a car is a big part of the enjoyment.
Great to see AMG are working on the new EV's and making them great fun.
Fun for 30 mins then stand around waiting for it to charge 8hours!! I'd rather stick with fuel ones!!

@@garethedwards2883 Cars in the United Kingdom are now being fitted with speed limiters as part of their mandatory measures, with the most commonly used variety being the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA).
The ISA works by using GPS data alone, with cameras for traffic sign recognition fitted to the front of the car - or a combination of the two. A speed limiter could also affect the engine power, which decreases the speed.
Speed limiters are designed to prevent drivers from exceeding certain speed limits and prompt them via audio, visual and haptic. that performance will come in handy!!🤔

The EQS with Hyperscreen has a better interior and more practicality than a S-class W223.
Will these cars depreciate quickly or only after the 10-year Battery warranty ends?
You mention something over 450 bhp for each motor but then say total power is 6 something? Which is it? Or are they leaving power on the table for the AMG63?
Great review Rory, Few things - Did you see the lag in that screen?!!! On a £100k car?? Wow. Also that hyper screen is a £8k option! You have to be slightly mad to walk into Mercedes and buy this car. 250 miles from a 95kwh battery is also terrible. Do better Merc!

@@sunnohh Each to their own I guess but for me if I was to pick a Porsche I'd have the Cayman GT4 or GT4RS or 911GT3 / GTS / Turbo etc. all way more fun than the EV and if I needed 4 doors the BMW M5CS or the up coming BMW M3 Touring but heck I wouldn't buy new so there are plenty of tasty fantastic machinery available second hand, for a performance car I just wouldn't. Now for my everyday workhorse maybe that can be an EV only except my everyday workhorse is an estate car (station wagon) and there ain't any of those in EVs yet.

At around a tonne extra per car (compared to the ICE equivalent) this could become an issue - especially as they will need to be parked there whilst recharging. It may become the norm to only allow EVs on the lower floors?

What's with the gap in the plastics between the steering wheel airbag cover and the topside of the steering wheel column? It's at least half a centimetre. It's not between any moving parts so it doesn't need clearance for movement.
I haven't seen a gap like that in any Dacia review
The EQS, I’ve driven the 580 BTW, is in a class by itself.
My problem is that it’s way too small to be an “electric S-class”
Okay, here's a simple idea: You got like a ton of speakers in your AMG and there are videogames that can mimic the sound of different engines pretty well (not just idling! (sorry Tesla)) and it can't be that hard to have an Option to make the inside of the car sound like the inside of any petrol AMG as you're accelerating. (Or to make your VW EV sound like a Lamborghini V12 on the inside)
And maybe putt a rumble function in the seat, or something like that to make you feel, like you'd be driving the AMG GT Black Series, but without the emission and without waking up your neighbors, when you start the car at 7 in the morning.
Note: this is just a theory. I don't know, if it would actually enhance the driving experience, but I don't see why they're not doing it and at least give it a try.
You could only have the sound from your back speakers or front speakers, depending on where the mimicked engine's usually positioned to make it feel even more realistic and you could alter the volume of just the engine sound.

So, which EV is the most efficient with its battery pack?? Talk about range , costs and cost comparisons with other manufacturers. AMG seems super expensive for what it offers.
Ok now because these have fewer moving parts in terms of the engine and gearbox, is it more reliable? And if they were mechanically, is the software running this thing programmed to just shit the bed in 2 years?
Why isn’t Mercedes going to offer the Dynamic Plus package in the UK for now?
Love these Merc EV's but they have to improve the front design of these machines.
I suspect they might want to leave the looks with the combustion engine machines for now and improve the EV design when the combustion gets fazed out

The little door for the washer fluid is horrible. Why not hide it behind the Mercedes emblem on the grill or somewhere else more discrete?

You know what, this thing kinda grew on me, you can absolutely not complain with that much power, its just the round front part that doesnt do it for me. amg is suppose to be aggressive in the front or just sharp and long sharklike, amg gtr gt gtc, im sure the electric ones after this will look much more beautiful
Please mike the sounds the car is making when you're trying to show them to us.
Right now I have to turn the volume way up to try and hear the quiet sounds the car is making and then back down before you start talking.
Given that it is a merc E class, I think it's just fine as an EV.
Sure AMG is sportiness, but in this case it's added sportiness to a comfort-biased car.
The discussion will be different probably for a GT (R) or for Porsches, Ferraris and Lambos.
Personallly, I don't believe it's a wrong direction.. I just wish all the main daily cars were EVs and then have a few ICE sport cars from each brand.. and not just the supercars.. I mean just keep a good ol' fashioned manual Miata in production, for the fun of it and have the rest of the Mazda lineup electrified :)
They had a chance to really deliver a very dynamic looking car.. (what the heck happened..)
They wanted to make a stamens amd build the most aerodynamic car. Now they got all eyes on them for both good and bad reasons.
For a company that makes great cars, I don't understand why Mercedes Benz, and now AMG, would ruin it's electric line of vehicles by making them so visually unappealing on the outside

It’s a transition that will be progressive from the weight of the car, range distances or charging times, but most of all the user’s experience to leave the past behind and appreciate the calm and silence of journeying. I think that this car looks GREAT and much interesting than most other EV-s on the market today that have no distinct features and mostly look like japanese cars from the 90's!
Is the engine signed by the craftsman who made it? Without that it’s not an AMG, it’s a bodykit with bolt on bits under the bonnet.
Does it have the new ISA which keeps it to the speed limits??

Only issue is the looks, and they should do a simulated manual with clutch, and v8 6.2 sound and the option to still drive auto with no sound.

Yes. Me too. Not that I can even afford one in the first place.
Basically you sacrifice 100 miles of range and you pay a lot of money extra, so you can accelerate .05 seconds faster to 62mph and have 10 miles more top speed. Compared with the "normal" EQE

As its a Brave New World... Maybe this can only be compared against the Porsche Taycan, KIA EV6 GT, Lotus etc. As price vs performance vs practicality on a battery scale. As clearly measured against a V8 AMG is not a logical contest but an emotional one.

The problem with electric cars is that they are only fun when you are flooring or launching them. Seems like ICE cars add a extra layer of fun with the sound and gear changing while they can still be very fast.
I really like the interior.
The exterior looks ok.
I want a electric car.
However, I will NOT buy a car that weighs 2.6 tonnes.

0-60 in less than 6 sec.
Top speed 120, dont need and cant use any more than that.
Look at MG Marvel R performance, 400$/month to lease and it does 0-50km in like 2 sec i belive

Watching this review on my phone below a pic of you with the McLaren and then scroll down to the review with the Lamborghini. For all of the wonderful features of this AMG I cannot get over the astonishing lack of styling and that price is eye watering - whilst I have a few more years of petroleum products these will be the pool of options that I will be choosing from especially when contemplating a £100k purchase. Thank you Mercedes but no thanks
I live in Philadelphia. We have over 155 suburbs. I see this thing all the time now. And honestly, They aren't too striking to the eye. The big benz body moves like a EV and it doesn't have the suspension as a normal benz. Being is a old city with horrible streets you can always see a cars body roll or rattle. And it rattles along bumps. No shade. Not in a sound way but it didnt look comfortable as a normal Benz.
its funny how history and perspective works, in my mind 3-400 year old cities are modern and VERY recent, come to Asia or Europe dude, you'll see millennia year old grand cities

I remember driving the old mx5 and every time I shifted to an even gear I operated the windows with my elbow.
A motoring show with Rory (car reviewer for the people) and Chris Harris (car reviewer for the petrol head) would be something to behold.
Re grill, much prefer to old? dotted pattern, looks superb. This is boring, although probably be nice in black, graphite or white.

It might be quick, with amazing acceleration off the line, but it will only ever be an appliance. There is nothing to get excited about, no noise, no emotion... I'll stick with my M157 thanks. And who signed off that design, its DULL and HIDEOUS..!!
