  • Rory hops aboard “Ron Burgundy” - his new OLD Bentley Brooklands. At the time of purchase, Ron was the cheapest Bentley in the country. Is it actually worth £8995, or should he have spent that money elsewere?

I believe your car has a GM 4L80E 4 speed transmission (3 speed plus overdrive), which all Spirit/Spur/Brooklands got in winter 1991. Here's how you can be sure: In top gear if your revs are about 2,750 @ 60MPH then you have the old 3-speed. If in top gear your revs are about 2,000 @60MPH then you have the 4 speed (3 speed plus overdrive).

the 'cinematography' coming out of this channel still amazes me even today... aand that Bentley. it really is a nice car, please do not chop it up for some rallying type project.. if you ABSOLUTELY MUST, then maybe give it a couple of Tesla motors and turn it electric, otherwise give it the full restoration treatment and surely it ought to be worth loads more than than £8995 price

I bought myself a 97 brooklands with full Bentley service history and just 50,000 on the clock. It really is a vastly underrated car. For the money I paid you couldn't buy a Dacia and what would you rather drive around in? Running costs are not as bad as people make out. Mine cost me £800 in 2022 and £1300 in 2023 but that was for a big service. My tip is to buy the very best example you can as they are expensive to do up and while parts aren't cheap, they are available from specialist suppliers.

  • @adriancooper78

Rory, I really really really love this channel and the way you make a presentation for each car reviewed.
There are so many nice cars that are reviewed that we just don't get in the UNITED STATES.
(Skoda, Cupra, Peugeot, Seat..... to name a few)
I been subscribed for some time and I am so so looking forward to you taking the car back to Bentley.
I don't know if this channel could implement a 'GO FUND THE BENTLEY RESTORATION PAGE'
    This could be an idea.
An honest explanation to the fans and subscribers of this channel could get the funds needed to RESTORE the car. I know you like the car but if Bentley repairs it you could raffle it off as a prize. Or you could get sponsors to fund you.
I'm excited and I'm so looking forward to the outcome of this.
    Let's see what happens!!!

@@GOINFINITI Mobilo, yes. But it’s their service commitment that allows such warranties on ageing cars which sees updates being done every year to keep the cars “fresh”. However I’m sceptical that their volume sales strategy can function in tandem with such a warranty. Their newer C Class had a host of build problems. Hopefully the new one is better, though excessive electronics were the issue in the former.

Interesting, you say it is 3 speed. I have an M reg Brooklands (green my one is) and its got a 4 speed auto. It feels more like 5 though because when you get to about 55MPH when the transmission locks out the slip from the fluid coupling and the car seems to have more zip. I still have the 15 inch rims and am using the correct Avon tyres. I was advised that these cars were designed to have much taller side walls and that it affects their ride and how they respond to tramlines in the road.

    Porsche Taycan 2870 kg
    Jaguar i-Pace 2670 kg
    KIA EV6 2105 kg
    Mercedes Benz EQS 2655 kg
So these new EV cars are real porkers too but not many reviewers mention this fact.

What Rory needs to do to this Bentley, is to convert it into a full EV car.

Rory Reid, your first of these Bentley videoes introduced me to you (I avoided Top Gear when it was Clarkson et al as "The Three Stooges" melded with car critiques does not a good show make), and I think your analysis is so spot on in every aspect regarding this purchase. I am old school, and this brings a certain thrill to me. I hear exactly what you are saying about not getting wood in modern cars ( only like the light beechwood in cars like Jaguar and Volvo) but in this four-wheeled Reform Club, it ticks one of all the proper luxury boxes. This is about the only car that can go slow and still command a certain respect. Someone with a REAL Bentley like this is not in a hurry. For less than 9,000 pounds, this is fantastic....until any repairs might start raising their ugly head. LOL, I thought a town and country horn would mean the opposite from the way you define the term: I'd think the less obnoxious horn would be for the pastoral, quiet, serene country where you don't need to scare the animals, while in the urban jungle of London, Paris, New York, or Burbank California, the standard authoritarian horn asserts business!!! For 140,000 miles on the odometer, it seems pretty nice. Indeed, the rear of the Bentley does seem relatively confined, but I guess one would need to move up to something more bespoke? A Silver Spur?

Why can such a great car be so cheap? This has got to be much better than previous models which did not have Turbo and the days when Rolls and Bentley would say when it came to power " adequate" This kind of Bentley is hot. You can even do wheelies in it. I know that because I have seen them on "Top Gear" and shows like that. It's important to note that whilst this body and car was originally designed for comfort and for limosine work has been transformed into a power house on wheels. What more could one wish for, even if now it is neither a sports car or a limo. It's a much better car now and like the more modern Rolls they really do go down well with rappers and other celebrities who have an abundance of money, to egnore the old traditions of such fine cars and take them to a whole new level.

They used Citroen’s hydropneumatic suspension under licence and rumour has it that RR and Bentley dealers removed the Citroen Patent badge from under the bonnet!

You, Matt L., Chris H., and Chris E. must revive Top Gear US. You four would be brilliant.

Love the vid. Much more interesting than some new EV. I'd take an old Bentley or Rolls over an EV any day. Spend the money saved on fuel and servicing.

Just a thought, but you could restore it to a really good level, gets good content views then auction the car off to us lot when you have done with it and one of us gets it for the price of a ticket and you guys get to re-coup some of your money. Win Win.

I've wondered for years how practical / impractical one of these would be - the next episode will probably be the definitive answer! BTW, the music in this video is FAR TOO LOUD! Please remedy, otherwise, Rory at his usual excellent, thanks.

I can only imagine what it would cost to fuel insure and maintain a 6.7 litre petrol in Ireland. The green brigade have made it impossible. And if you are unlucky, you might need Bentley parts at some point. So it’s not surprising these cars don’t sell to normal people.

For me I’d take an e38 740 i sport, the rolls v8 is a bit underpowered without the turbo.
