years ago, in the mid 00s, i went to a car show and was talking to a guy with an NSX. It had all kinds of scratches and a few dents and the seats were tore a little. I asked him about it all and he said he drove it every single day (weather permitting) with his dog. He'd take it to get small groceries, to the beach, wherever. He said "cars are meant to be driven, that's literally their purpose." and i'll never forget that. Drive your car. Take care of your car, but drive it. It's literally their purpose.

Had this same experience, but this was just last year. I talked to an older gentleman who brought his 2007 Lotus Exige, apparently it was 1 of 1 for his model year. And he drove everyday! In the winter, in the summer, in rain, ice, anything! Cuz that was his daily driver, and he said the exact same quote to me when I was surprised. "Well, I bought this car to drive it, and that's exactly what I'm gonna do until the wheels fall off this thing." I have real respect for those kinds of people.

I'm a firm believer in buying the car you want and enjoying it till the wheels fall off. I don't own a crazy car, just a 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited. I drive about 100 miles per day for work, and I've had countless people tell me to buy a beater. And while yes, my front end is sandblasted with rock chips at 50k miles, I've enjoyed the crap out of my car. I figure if I'm getting that much seat time, I may as well enjoy it. It's currently JB4 tuned with an intake, BOV, and wheels. Might seem stupid to some, but I love my car and fully intend to keep enjoying it for years to come. I've never really thought to judge someone on how they use their cars.

Having just picked up my IS 500 as a "daily" (though I work from home, so it's more of an errand car), I definitely vibe with this. Everyone and their mother is telling me to "get PPF, get ceramic coat, wax your wheels, get all-weather mats" and the list goes on. While I plan to do some of those things, namely PPF, I also want to accept that it is gonna get messy. I plan to keep this thing for years and am under no delusions that it'll look the same at 50,000 miles as it did at 50 miles. Some people buy cars to keep them in the garage and eventually sell them, but I plan to enjoy mine. I like that you enjoy yours, too, even though it is an enviable car.

The daily driver paradox became more clear to me when I drove my daily driven 1987 Toyota Cressida up to Ontario, and realized how dirty the car was getting the farther up I got. I vow never to drive in New York again in something nice with the reasonless aggression people have. As much as I would love to drive my Cressida across the country seven times a year, I can't fathom losing it, or having to replace everything under it. The car isn't perfect whatsoever, but it's original to the point I don't want to be replacing panels or subframes because of corrosion or one of the texters or other stupid people slamming into my car. I'll hopefully be working towards a GR86 or GR Corolla soon, so I won't have to worry about keeping an old, great condition car which is impossible to find parts for as my daily driver.

I almost made it home, but had to park the car in 'stationary drift mode' and walk the remaining distance home (long haul).
Only you will change your mind :)

I'm definitely in the camp of drive the cars you buy as often as it makes sense based your unique circumstances. For some people that is 100 miles per month, and other's it may be 1500 miles per month lol. There are some of us out there that are true driving enthusiasts and view each drive as a mini vacation - each time we take our car out is an experience. I also totally understand that some people are trying to play their cards right with the economics of owning certain cars and wanting to preserve them. To those who want to garage queen them go for it, but anyone who believes that should be the norm needs a reality check. My Elantra N is my only car. I drive it to work, to the grocery store, in snow storms, and on beautiful summer days on back roads. That's....the entire reason I bought an Elantra N over something less practical like a Miata, Mustang or BRZ. Pro tip kids: KROWN exists! There are steps you can take to protect against rust! I think the difference is the people who say these types of comments most likely won't own a Pagani or a multi-million dollar Ferrari, so if someone "ruins it" by driving it in the winter, that doesn't affect them, but they might one day own a Civic Type R and seeing you "ruin" a brand new example by driving it in the winter means they won't be able to find a perfect condition car and will have to settle for one with rock chips on it and other imperfections that come with winter.

Another thing is the value of old cars, I own a mint 2000 Honda prelude and I could sell it for a big profit but I like the car so much that I don’t want to, but it’s hard to justify keeping the car when it’s a old car worth 15k and I could buy something else for that money. Thats what being a car person is all about, enjoying the hobby at any pay grade and with any car we enjoy. Tedward knows what he's talking about, people judge too much and I think a lot of us can agree that we've been guilty and judged others ruining a nice car but the reality is that if we don't enjoy them then someone else will! Just maintain it, coat it, treat it as good as possible but enjoy the heck out of it while not ruining it for no reward.

surprised you didn't mention applying fluid film or krown to a vehicle to inhibit rust. as long as the underside is coated in oil, rust won't start. it's gross but it works.

Dude is an influencer and owns multiple 911s, of course a CTR that he got a bro deal on can be a semi-disposable daily. For the rest of us, they're a huge capital cost that we may be able to swing only a few times in an entire lifetime while still remaining financially responsible. Especially at today's markups and interest rates.

If you are going to buy a car, drive the fucking thing. Going more than a week without driving is terrible for the seals and gaskets 🤦🏻‍♂️. The CTR is below the average price of a new car. And it’s pretty easy to avoid markups, all you have to do is manipulate dealers by acting rich. Beat them at their own game.

I drive my FL5 on stock summers in Maine at the moment. I know I should probably get a set of winter tires, but I only take it out when it has been a while since snowfall so there's no snow on the roads and the temps are above 32 F. The Michelins can work in those temps, albeit with not their full grip (needs at least 45 F), and as long as I don't drive it below 20 F, according to Michelin and Tire Rack, I shouldn't face the problem of compound cracking as well. As for the salt, I have the car completely rust coated (underbody + fenders, doors, engine bay). For the snowy days, I have my 2002 CR-V to do the heavy lifting. The gist of mentioning all of this is that as long as you know how to avoid damaging your car, drive it! It's a car, especially in this case, a great driving car, so make it worth it (with all the safeguards ofc).

A brand new CTR deserves better than braving I-95 at 7am in January in a snowstorm while Bub from Westbrook in his F-150 who forgot to clean the snow out of his pickup bed sends ice shards flying towards your window. No thanks.

@James Rather like I said, only when there's no snow on the roads, which would mean at least a couple of days after the snow has stopped, and I've not seen any car with snow on it after a couple of days. But yeah, to each their own. I just hate for a car to be a garage queen when the conditions outside are fine.

Different perspective for you @tedward - I have a 23 RS3 which was my daily driver for 5 months. Finally I picked up a new civic hatch to have a daily driver. The civic is a revelation to me - 9 times out of 10, I will pick driving it vs my RS3. Does that mean I don't like my RS3? No, its the absolute reality for my personality that the civic is a better tool to run errands, go through all the traffic and stop lights in my area, not have to care about it, etc etc. The term "daily driver" varies GREATLY of how and where you actually drive. To me, there is very little fun in driving a performance car slow or through the mundane activities that an appliance should carry out. Final point to mention - if something happens to my rs3, I really can't replace it in the short or mid term, as the supply is extremely limited. The civic has actually messed me up to the point that it makes me question what I want in a car, or how a car equates to $. Getting off topic but honda executed the new civic so, so, so, well.

Shouldn't the RS3 drive like any Audi A3 for around town driving though? I'm a little confused about this. It shouldn't be too different to running errands in a Audi A3 1.0 TSI, apart from the width and needing to be careful about low the bodykit is.

this is funny because this strikes home for me right now. i got a 1999 Honda civic hatchback with 115k as a gas saver and a reliable car for me as a 20 year old. I lowered it and threw some nice wheels and tires on but the paint was fading fast and i wanted a more practical vehicle. the civic was at 150k I bought a 2001 Toyota 4runner with 232k. Went on trips and daily drove that but now it has a bumper its lifted and has oversized tires and drank gas. i bought a 2007 Honda fit with 186k but the previous owner put it on lowering springs and blew the shocks so i got a decent pair of coil overs but then it needed wheels. Now i want an Fl5 Type R as a new car i can keep for a long time because im tired of having old cars but i dont want to sell my old cars. I dont need 4 vehicles but i want my 4runner for camping the 1999 Civic is my forever car that i want to restore over my life and the fit is the daily that i care for because i cant have a beater. Im not sure what to do lol I cant drive 3 cars as much as i want let alone 4. Not sure what i want to do about cars but im saving for a fl5 type r to buy next year hopefully. Id like to keep my cars but i dont need 4. Lets see what i do when the time comes.

Yes and if its an 4x4 street style truck, I can have fun with digs (like all the other AWD cars that launch so well) if i wanted a off road truck i wouldn't own a clean example, because off roading to me is going to have scratches and dents from trees, not just going on a dirt road or parking lot (TRXs/Raptors)
