Keep the good work Jay. You are the BEST magic teacher in RUclips. Your profound observations make this site a better place for Magicians learning how to keep the tricks behind and do MAGIC.
Wow!!!! Been learning magic from you for over 20 years. The only way in those days to access to what you had to offer was to wait for you to come down for a convention or to buy your videos. Amazing trick. Thank you.
If you can find an excuse for the question you ask them you can predict anything on the card like for example their pets name, their best friends name, their mothers or fathers name or their job or their favourite food or their favourite free time activity etc... Be creative :) Thank You Jay for uploading this incredibly great trick! Definitely gonna add it to my repertoire!
Awesome routine! We met over 25 years ago in Sacramento at an A1 convention. I have been a huge fan since and LOVE performing Back in Time. Thanks for sharing your work and merry Christmas!
Mr. Sankey, what if I set up the red card at the very bottom and the prediction second from the bottom? Riffle shuffle to keep the bottom two, neck-tie second deal, bottom pink count, swing cut, and finish it up with a clean riffle force? That would eliminate the suspicious moment of finding the red card and the pocket switch.
Jay Sankey...I don`t know what it is about your voice....but it is very soothing...is this something you have activly aimed for and pursued, or is it just how you have been all your life?
Here's the thing. What if the card you write their name was the only red one in a blue deck. You could palm it in or something after the shuffle. You would say its a red card, but it would be the only red-backed card in the deck.
My friend brought up the one-ahead principle to me the other day, so it's funny that you post something like this! Really good trick, I'm gonna use this a lot.
Woah, this is a good 'un...thanks Jay! Also, a genuinely lovely thought at the end of the video; that kind of thing can really make a difference to someone's day (it's crazy how much).
Hey Jay! I noticed you wearing that Empire hat a lot, and I was just thinking... To keep the creative wheels a-turnin', I wonder if you could come up with a paintball-related magic trick... Might be fun!
Aah I've been waiting for a video from jay and here it is. Really liked the words you said towards the end, definitely something to be appreciated apart from the crazy awesome trick that can be done anytime
Perhaps use a black marker with a blue cap, with the pocketed red/black cards written in blue. That way your red/black prediction looks like it was written with the marker you have in your hand, and the name card looks like it was written with a completely different marker that's not even on the table.
Ok so interesting enough I am going to this open mic for magicians for a magic show restaurant and I’m putting together a mentalist routine and I really like this one cause I won’t know anyone there and it’s perfect
Great trick as usual SankeyMagic. My one question is what if the name given seems really hard to spell or you’ve never heard it and don’t know the spelling. Showing that card at the end with the name spelled way off wouldn’t be as good. Have you ever run into this and if so how do you get around that?
I would change my name to What. I'm already using that for a gaming app. So, when my friends asked "What is your name", I say ,"Yes". or, "absolutely" . I've had fun with this. oh, how I wish Bud and Lou were still around....
@SankeyMagic The back site of the chosen card can even be red, so you would have a three step surprise version, where the reaction gets bigger every step 😉
Didn't go through all the comments... Great trick... Only thing I would improve on is the control of the font/writing style of the prediction/name. If the prediction is nice and uniform (like in the tutorial), the new written name should be the same style :)
Love your humor, love your tricks, and love your videos. In fact, you're one of the few magician videos I always watch the entire way through. However, if you removed the cursing, I could watch the videos with my 5 and 7 year old learning magicians! Great work, sir. Looking forward to future videos!
That Bravis, always the trickster! Awesome trick, Jay! I like how personal it is.. can't get much more personal then to have someone's name written on a card! Especially if their name is Bravis!! Haha
Thanks. There's just something about the STRUCTURE and presentation that really creates an inexplicable experience of people. I kinda created it on instinct (if that makes any sense.)
Brilliant trick and thanks for sharing. I still think your most impressive trick is how you look younger now than in the footage of you when you had hair 😀👍
Man this rocks, I'm tempted too add something tho. How about the card they pick also had a red back!? Also, so would love a reconstruction set! That would be sweeeet!
Yeah....the red back is cool idea....for me it wouldn't feel right. Seems to make it more of a kind of....'trick.' But that's me. YOU...you should try it - see how it flies and feels.
Absolutely, after sleeping on it I can see where your coming from. It would drastically alter the flow and is probably quite unnecessary. That being said, I will still have a play and see what happens. Maybe if I like the end result il share a video with you;) Thanks for the feedback Jay, always appreciated!
Ok, you were right! Been playing with it for a few hours through the day and it just seems to come across more as an afterthought than a good kicker. It doesn't add enough to warrant the extra risk with the overly complicated handling either! Il just leave both as they are!
I would go by Puck , as in Robin Goodfellow, the classical Trickster who would help your family with chores around the house, only for them to be undone when you irritate him, getting travelers lost, or generally just being a comic nuisance.
I'd change my name to Gary...because people keep thinking that's what my name is (or Corey or Casey). Love this effect, btw. It looks to be a great worker.
Great trick! You could also make your prediction the name of someone you technically didn't get introduced to (Let's say Karen), and when you move from person to person doing tricks, you do this one for them. Or do other tricks like coins, etc. and then do this as your first card trick. That way you get a double-whammy by it being the only card in the deck with their name, and you didn't even "know" their name. Then your banter could be "I wrote something on a card this morning before I came here today..." So you thought of their name, and still haven't been introduced to them yet. Not necessary, but I think I'll try that addition when I can. Thanks!
I could be cheap and say Jay because I think you're a fantastic magician but I guess I'd go with Joe. My grandfather's name was Joseph and he left Poland to come to the US because things were so bad in Poland. How many of us would move to a country where we didn't speak the language to seek our fortunes?
What if you do this trick in front of your friends and you obviously know all of their names? What is a good casual way to use a different name, say their middle name, without bringing to much attention asking for their middle name?
I would change my name to MAGIC because my stage name has the word "MAGIC" as the first part of it so when people say my full name they would say my stage name
Bravissimo jay Bravis... Hmm sounds like bravas as in patatas bravas which is making me hungry. Anyone if I could change my first name to anything I would change it to my second name which is Dominic because I feel like it fits me pretty well
Very cool trick, as always! I would change my first name to Roland, because that is the name of my dog, and I think it might confuse him. Or maybe it would only confuse me. Who knows?
As much as I love my name and the gentleman I'm named after, I would probably do the simple change from Ryne to Ryan. Seeing as how that's what everyone wants to call me anyway. Again, I love my name, but it would have been much easier going through life with at least one name people can pronounce.
Not a critique at all. Just a question. Couldn't this be done where you "predict" and then force the exact card they'd stop at and not just the suit? Great Vid. Thanks.
Allow me to show my psychopathic credentials: 'Barabbas' (meaning "Father's Son" in Hebrew). Anyway, if I could change my first name, I'd want something with a much better meaning than my current one - Philip means "horse lover", which just sounds weird, if not illegal! I might choose Peter - "The Rock", which is pretty cool.
Yeah, I think so. :) I've performed this with MANY odd names, and people laugh at the spelling, but they are still super FREAKED that I had ANY sense of the name of the person "I would meet that day."
Depending on the name you might be able to get away with saying something like the following. What's your name? "Caitlyn" Ahh what a pretty name, with a do you spell it "The right way or the wrong way"? aka with a C or a K and then whatever way they tell you, you obviously say "Ahh so the right way!" it's a nice little compliment and you get them to help you with spelling.
You can always play it off as a feeling or a sense, sometimes something close but not exact can be just as powerful. Take the Barabbas, even spelled incorrectly it is close enough to get the reaction and kinda lends credibility that you are still not perfect.
I learned the performance and loved this one I might even do this a couple of times tonight but i'm confused as to why everyone is picking a new name for themselves.....
I'd change my name to "Jay Sankey", because somehow when I hear that name, I think of all the talent for magic that name probably had. I don't know why though... ;-)
Keep the good work Jay.
You are the BEST magic teacher in RUclips. Your profound observations make this site a better place for Magicians learning how to keep the tricks behind and do MAGIC.
Sounds like you and me are on the same bus. Lucky me!
Just performed this one at a buisness thing, The people had name tags so I didn't even have to ask their name! it was awesome!
Wow!!!!
Been learning magic from you for over 20 years.
The only way in those days to access to what you had to offer was to wait for you to come down for a convention or to buy your videos.
Amazing trick.
Thank you.

Thank You Jay for uploading this incredibly great trick! Definitely gonna add it to my repertoire!
Thank you Jay. Beautifully presented, very generous lesson, stay well.
Awesome routine! We met over 25 years ago in Sacramento at an A1 convention. I have been a huge fan since and LOVE performing Back in Time. Thanks for sharing your work and merry Christmas!
"One handed gestures have a dark history" - that was good. Thanks for sharing this trick and bringing your humor to your subscribers
I figure we both bring our humanity to each other amigo.
Great video again! If I had to change my name I would choose Jay because it might make me half as good as you preforming magic.
Jay Sankey...I don`t know what it is about your voice....but it is very soothing...is this something you have activly aimed for and pursued, or is it just how you have been all your life?
Jay you have the coolest glasses i swear. Every single pair I see you wear is so unique and awesome lol
Chris lets do something weird
Everything on your channel is amazingly weird
Great vid
Never dissapointing👌👌👌
Even weirder to watch when my name is Chris :-)
LOL "...and I even had a sense of what their name...might.....be.....baaaravvissss"
hilarious XD
I know, right? Chris really threw me for a loop with that one.
One thing, jay, you never come up with use less things, I like that.
hey, I try my best - really.
I would change my name to Jay because I LOVE Jay Sankey. God Bless you Jay, Chris, And Jay's Family and Chris's Family
Thanks for that - and I definitely wish all the best for you and your family too!
Here's the thing. What if the card you write their name was the only red one in a blue deck. You could palm it in or something after the shuffle. You would say its a red card, but it would be the only red-backed card in the deck.
Filip Baader that is real nice
Thats actually a really good idea
Unbelievable, my head as a magician and spectator was just amazed.
This is so good ! Great great trick !!!
WOW Any Planet! This is GREAT for Restaurant work. Thank you Jay!
I actually look forward to see these videos, and I think everyone can see why
Lovely comment amigo. THX.
Thanks for inventing this awesome trick!
Yay now I get to have friends
#fingerscrossed
My friend brought up the one-ahead principle to me the other day, so it's funny that you post something like this! Really good trick, I'm gonna use this a lot.
Great trick something fresh to practice nice one 👍
This is the most genius use of the one step ahead
Speaking of appreciation...thanks so much!
SankeyMagic thank YOU jay
Ive spent 2 hrs watching ur videos. And ive done a few of your tricks. You arw amazing
Perhaps use a black marker with a blue cap, with the pocketed red/black cards written in blue. Ok so interesting enough I am going to this open mic for magicians for a magic show restaurant and I’m putting together a mentalist routine and I really like this one cause I won’t know anyone there and it’s perfect
Great stuff... And Jay, "Thank you" :-) You can call me Tungsten.
Thx Tungsten!
Great stuff as usual
Great trick as usual SankeyMagic. My one question is what if the name given seems really hard to spell or you’ve never heard it and don’t know the spelling. Showing that card at the end with the name spelled way off wouldn’t be as good. Have you ever run into this and if so how do you get around that?
One of my favorite tricks
2nd comment and jay ur such an inspiration and ur site has rly helped me prepare for Britain's got talent so thx
Awesome. Break a leg!
Hey jay I would change my name to Grawlix as that is the name for the symbols used to say swear words in kids books
+SankeyMagic You are awesome God given gift. #Please reply
Graffiti? Sick video Jay.
I love ur channel and ur tricks
I would change my name to What. I'm already using that for a gaming app. So, when my friends asked "What is your name", I say ,"Yes". or, "absolutely" . I've had fun with this.
oh, how I wish Bud and Lou were still around....
Who's on first?
I also love the fact that you fooled Penn and Teller allowing them to think they'd figured you out, That's absolutely hilarious!
Beautiful effect! Great way to make a *name* for yourself ;)
You are awesome dude
Thanks your tutorial
Love your humor, love your tricks, and love your videos. In fact, you're one of the few magician videos I always watch the entire way through.
However, if you removed the cursing, I could watch the videos with my 5 and 7 year old learning magicians!
Great work, sir. Looking forward to future videos!
Love this trick!
Great stuff!
That Bravis, always the trickster!
Awesome trick, Jay! I like how personal it is.. can't get much more personal then to have someone's name written on a card! Especially if their name is Bravis!! Haha
This is such an easy and cool trick!
Ta da!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Super trick!!! :)
Thanks MASter!
what do you do if they let you go past the card with the name on when they choose a card? I think I need to watch the choosing part one more time.

LOL.
That is awesome!
i always love your tricks...they are insane!
I'd change my name to Gary...because people keep thinking that's what my name is (or Corey or Casey). Love this effect, btw. It looks to be a great worker.

My grandfather's name was Joseph and he left Poland to come to the US because things were so bad in Poland. How many of us would move to a country where we didn't speak the language to seek our fortunes?
Fantastic question. And I suspect your grandfather was indeed, QUITE A PERSON. #respect #strength
I would change my name to "dumpling", because it's humble and comforting :) Who doesn't love a dumpling? thanks for the video
Tasty!
Jay where would a good place for an intermediate to advanced 12 year old magician to perform and possibly make money.
i love the X Files t-shirt you have there!
Wasn't Chris saying Barabus ... as in the bible?
What a great vid also what a great trick
What if you do this trick in front of your friends and you obviously know all of their names? What is a good casual way to use a different name, say their middle name, without bringing to much attention asking for their middle name?
Sir you are great
I would change my name into Baravis, just because it sounds so nice!
Awesome!
I thought the name was 'Barabbas' who was released by Pontius Pilate in a customary pardon before the feast of Passover.
Superb superb
Nice shuffle jay;)
I would change my name to MAGIC because my stage name has the word "MAGIC" as the first part of it so when people say my full name they would say my stage name
Bravissimo jay
Bravis... Hmm sounds like bravas as in patatas bravas which is making me hungry. Anyone if I could change my first name to anything I would change it to my second name which is Dominic because I feel like it fits me pretty well
Bravis because it's such a cool name
I don't know if I could change my name. If I had to maybe Sono, as I've used that online for years.
Very cool trick, as always!
I would change my first name to Roland, because that is the name of my dog, and I think it might confuse him. Or maybe it would only confuse me. Who knows?
Now I'M confused!
Jay, I'd change my name to Bud or Buddy, that way when someone says "Sup Buddy", they would be actually saying my name.
only canadians say that :p
Lol, too true.
Best line in this video: "that leaves my Chi chi here, I've blown on it" Sounds so dirty... LOL.. Jay we all like your chichi,
Love,
Dumpling
If I could change my first name, I would change it to Napoleon. I like Napoleon Bonaparte and Napoleon Dynamite. LOL
Hell ya! That name has really BOOM.
My name is on that card
Bro your good lol
Like the trick but I can't do it cuz I'm illiterate I was wondering how long have you played paintball for knows the Hat
Great Vid. Thanks.
Yes - you could do that, but then it wouldn't instantly re-set and you couldn't do it again and again at a party, etc.
Of course! Thanks.
Great trick, but I hate using cards because they're so cliche. I'm going to try to think of how I might do a paper variation of this. :)
I would change my name to Chris just because it‘s a nice name and many nice persons have it. :)
'Horse Lover?' Wow. Very....ummmm....erotic.
Phil Griffin I thought I was the only one that thought "Barabbas". Name of criminal released instead of Jesus.
But "Bravis" is pretty funny 🤣
I like my name, but when I get another dog, I'll name him Stains
Do you already own a dog named Smells?
No dog currently. I just like the name for when I'm at the park and have to call the dog back.
I would change my name to Brad! Because, well, I just like Brad. Lol.
Is it suspicious, if I ask how to write their name first?
Yeah, I think so. :) I've performed this with MANY odd names, and people laugh at the spelling, but they are still super FREAKED that I had ANY sense of the name of the person "I would meet that day."
Depending on the name you might be able to get away with saying something like the following.
What's your name?
"Caitlyn"
Ahh what a pretty name, with a do you spell it "The right way or the wrong way"? aka with a C or a K and then whatever way they tell you, you obviously say "Ahh so the right way!" it's a nice little compliment and you get them to help you with spelling.
You can always play it off as a feeling or a sense, sometimes something close but not exact can be just as powerful. Take the Barabbas, even spelled incorrectly it is close enough to get the reaction and kinda lends credibility that you are still not perfect.
Thank you for your help!
League of Plays yes
I learned the performance and loved this one I might even do this a couple of times tonight but i'm confused as to why everyone is picking a new name for themselves.....
Gotta read the contest question I ask in the description.
SankeyMagic The one place I didn't look..hell i even rewatched the video. damn I'm dumb lol
I want to change my name to Hercules, so that I can have superhuman strength like my dad
I think MANY of us wish for our father's strength Tom. Peace to you bro.
I'd change my name to "Jay Sankey", because somehow when I hear that name, I think of all the talent for magic that name probably had. I don't know why though... ;-)
HAD....? #mortaltwang
Idk id pick Hector cause it's my dad's name and sounds nice
I'd totally change my name to Falnarg, just because it would be unique and memorable.
Unique yes - but I'm not sure anybody would quite remember it correctly. It's so freakin odd. :)
SankeyMagic A man is not remembered by name alone. Nay, he is remembered by his actions!
I would change my name to Jaakko, because when I was a kid, I used to call myself by that when I was playing
Very cool! The things we tell ourselves when we were kids....so special.
If i had to change my name i would change it to jay cause i want to be like you
What if they say stop at the near end of the deck?
