Hey Dylan! Congratulations!🥳 You have been selected as the winner of this giveaway! Please DM me ASAP over on instagram so I can get your information and send you this NIFTYFIFTY: instagram.com/bryanadamc/
The 50mm 1.8 is such a powerhouse value. It was my first prime and even my beginning Rebel XTi days photos still hold up thanks to it. When the time came for me to spend real money on glass, I was able to add the 35mm 1.4, knowing that I could cover my 50mm needs with the 1.8.
Videos like this is why I bought the 50mm 1.8 in the first place. It's such a great lens at a reasonable price for someone getting into photography, and it works on a professional level as well.
There's something about lightweight lenses though. You take them with you more easily and photograph for longer. That for me is actually a more important factor than the difference in sharpness between these two lenses tbh. If a lens weights more than 500g I'm simply not going to use it. Something for videographers to be aware of: in-camera lens corrections apply in video mode for RF lenses but not for EF lenses or other adapted lenses. There's usually not a huge difference in practice, but it's good to know.
I'm sharing a little story here So the first ef lens I bought for my Canon 80D was a YONGNUO 50mm II 😅 for 110usd and I loved it actually so I said yeah let's save some money for a 50mm prime lens and when I finally could afford it after a year and a half i only kept it for less than 2 months because I was assaulted and robbed in the street. They took my jacket my camera, tripod and lens... Anyway I refused to stop doing photography because I love it and also is work for me so I asked for a loan, bought a new camera and returned to my old cheap lens. It was all good I think until a month ago when I dropped it and now I can't use the autofocus 🥲 not a big deal when shooting portraits but definitely a problem for other purposes. Third world problems I know ✌🏼
I love this style of comparison. Very strong comparison for portraiture. There are 2 very big advantages to the nifty 50 in my eyes: 1. Weight and 2. Not nearly as anxiety inducing if you have accidentally break it. But honestly though the onion ring bokeh is a little too much for me. Also, this video doesn’t touch on the light transmission but that 1.2 vs. 1.8 can make all of the difference in the world when shooting indoors or late in the evening.
Great video, I like the fact you didn't diss the Nifty Fifty and just pointed out the difference because at the end of the day its art and art is very subjective. I don't think any equipment, technique, style etc... is bad, I believe people just need help figuring out what will help them get their story, message or product across they way want. I think this video did just that.
The Nifty Fifty was the first lens I bought for my Canon SL2 but I soon learned that it becomes a nifty 80 when you factor in the 1.6 crop. It wasn't until I moved up to the R that I finally understood how great this lens is. I got tired of having to use the adapter so I bought the RF 50 1.8 for $200. Way better and I can now really appreciate the 50. I also own the RF 15-35 which is my favorite lens but pricey! Nice comparison that shows you don't have to sell a kidney to get great affordable glass.
appreciate the honesty and visual comparison of the two and values of each. Having just started the hobby, nothing more I value at this time than true explanations of the products. I certainly did not think I would be able to begin this hobby with my expectations of less can actually produce as good pictures to spending an enormous amount of money oo equipment. Sometimes bringing everything to perspective is the most advantages input to entertaining someone to the hobby. Great input and again, honesty with the visual goes a long way for us beginners. I bought a Canon t2i for $100 including a bag, battery and charger with manuals also. So happy with the price and the value!. I have recently added the nifty 50 with my equipment as I would like to do more portrait pics. This was a great example, and SO happy with the $ value I spent. I don't want to sound cheap but this choice allows me to continue and progress as an amateur and simply ENJOY the hobby.
nifty 50 always surprise me, the feel of this lens is unmatchable. the focal length is very pleasing and wide enough to take photographs of day-to-day stuff. this thing changed my photography game. 50mm is the most versatile affordable lens IMO.
I really enjoyed your honest review of the nifty 50 and the rf 50 1.2. Most reviews bash cheaper lenses with a bias opinion. You going into depth about sharpness, bokeh, and build is awesome.
Thanks for this comparison. I didn't ever owned the 1.2L, so I can't give any statement. But I really like the old non-stm version, when having the camera on any events like bbq, somebody grabs your camera to take some shots and you just don't have to worry. "yes, try it - it's fun". Best value lens.
Very nice video! The 50mm was also my first lens after the kit lens. And just as with you I fell in love with it and therefore with photography/cinematography. Will probably keep this lens for ever
new subscriber! great comparison video! i love it! the social media and web size, most from my images won't be able to tell the difference. Plus the size and portability, it makes a huge difference, especially when taking photos of my kids. Good luck to the winner of this lens. They'll be super happy with it for sure!
Nothing can really beat the price-quality ratio that this lens offers. For my personal stuff I usually gravitate towards wider focal lengths, but when it comes to work, I'm always grabbing the 50mm, specially for product photography
What I don't like about my nifty-fifty is the small focus ring when I have to use manual focus. It is very small and sometimes it's hard to be precise with it. The RF version would be better in this regard, but the price point just ain't worth it
Hahahah my birthday is Monday July 25th! I have the EF version of the nifty fifty adapted to my R5 with battery grip as a backup to my 28-70mm f2.0 ($3,000) lens. This nifty fifty lens is amazing for the price. I whole heartedly agree with Bryan about how good this lens is and its why I still carry it in my bag. If my 28-70 ever fails, I know I can religh on the 50mm f1.8 to finish a wedding. This is super critical for when shooting a wedding as it's a one time event. You have to get it right as there are no second chances. The second thing I would like to point out, is how small and light weight it is. Even with the EF-RF adapter attached, it's light enough to carry in my bag without taking up much room. Another thing I would like to point out there are two versions of the EF 50 f1.8. One the EF mount is plastic on the older version and the newer version it's a metal EF mount. While this doesn't affect image quality, if you see yourself switching lenses often then you might want to spring for the metal version as it will last much longer. If this will be your only lens then the plastic EF mount will work just fine for many years. It's a very good quality plastic. I want to address the elephant in the room. Weight! The RF 50 f1.2 and RF 28-70 f2 are heavy. I have the R5 with the attached battery grip. The grip holds two batteries which doubles my run time as I shoot hybrid style. Meaning I shoot little video clips along with photos. My camera gets warm and it sucks juice. I never want to switch out batteries in the middle of the couple walking down the isle hench the need for the battery grip. But now I'm holding more weight. The 28-70 f2 lens is also very heavy. Total weight is 6-pounds that I have to hold for an 8 hour day. I could cut out 3-pounds if I only used the Nifty Fifty. I did find a workaround by purchasing a monopod with a hi-hat at the bottom (mini tripod stand at the base of the stick). Now I have a way to rest my 6-pounder while shooting video and taking a few photos. It also keeps the weight off my shoulders even though I have a shoulder harness for my camera. Still the little EF 50mm glass is soooo attractive for that matter. Could they make the Nifty Fifty much better? Not really unless they find a way to defeat the laws of physics. More glass you have fixes many issues smaller glass has. They could add better coatings but that would increase the cost and you might as well buy the f1.2 lens. I think as software gets smarter with Machine Learning (aka A.I.) the remaining issues can be fixed. The cheap Nifty Fifty is really a great lens that every photographer should own.
One more thing. If you are using a APC-S (cropped sensor body) the 50mm will have the look of a 80mm lens on a full frame sensor. For canon bodies we take the mm number and multiply by 1.6 to get 81mm. Nikon is crop factor is 1.5 which is the same as Fuji and Sony. This is just something to keep in mind when you see photos from a full frame camera. Their shots will look a little wider as if they were shot at 31mm. (50mm / 1.6 = 31.25) So if you buy a 30mm lens for your APS-C body it will look like a 50mm of a full frame body. Which is a lens I have for my Canon SL2 Rebel as a back up to my R5.
this is amazing!! i’m only a beginner photographer (don’t have any of the fancy gear) but your work really inspires me to make art out of the tools i have handy! you truly have a knack for composition, thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
I appreciate the video. These type of comparison videos are always reassuring for the equipment that I use aka the nifty fifty lol but it also shows me what I can advance too aka expensive lenses like the 50mm 1.2 👍🏾👍🏾
I’m still using the kit lens. I think the increase in quality and the limitation in versatility (in terms of focal length) I feel as if it would force me to get more creative and hopefully rekindle the love I use to have for capturing stills!
I had a 20D a million years ago and had the nifty fifty on it most of the time. It was my best lens. I shot gigs in low light and the photos were always amazing. It's noisy as hell focusing but with a band on stage that doesn't matter!
Hiya, you should compare nifty fifty but RF one! As back glass element is closer to sensor and pictures are more sharp, and comparison would be even more accurate!
💞 My first lens was also a Canon nifty-fifty, but that was on my Canon AE-1 Program back in high school (it was a new camera!). 50mm is a nice focal length.
Nifty fifty video was very educational for a beginner like me. Good reminder not to make judgements based on appearance versus performance, hype versus reality and staying focused on what's essential.
Big fan of these comparison videos. Thank you for posting it in such a concise manner. It's always great to see how you can come into this hobby/business as a new person with cheaper equipment.
The 50 1.8 is softer not just because it's cheaper, but also because of the distance you create from the lens to the sensor by putting the rf adapter. I own the same f1.8 lens and when you put it on a dslr it's sharper. I resently had a photoshoot with eos r and 50mm f1.8 with the adapter and comparing the images with the images i took years ago with the dslr and the same lens, they look softer. The same goes if you put it on an aps-c body. The light scaters a bit and that creates a bit of softness. This lens is made for fullframe dslr cameras. Then it gets sharper. Its a good lens for the money.
This comparison is a great example that the cheaper lenses are also great. The only thing that I would mention is the lens stabilization, because with the cheaper cameras like canon RP as I do have it would be a bit of a difference in quality. Thank you for the video, it is really useful!
I'm in debate on the 85 1.2 and the 50 1.2. I have the trilogy and the nifty fifty and 85 1.2. Unless I need the nifty fifty I always go for the 85 but I'm needing a 1.2. Decisions decisions. What would you suggest?
I use an almost 50 year old lens (50mm f1,8) on my Sony. I like the look of the old lenses. Fully manual, you have to take your time and the picture turns out better than many autofocus lenses I have. I only use autofocus when filming when traveling by bike and dog.
I love how this video shows the power of such a small lens, I started photography in the beginning of the year and have been looking for the perfect lens to use for portraits, and I think this one is it, I would definitely have to add it to my gear
Just bought myself a used Canon 1DX (Mark i) for $700 already having the niftyfifty makes me super excited to use it more after watching this video! Insane how close they are in terms of quality in most areas, thanks for making this comparison!
Thanks for the comparison. I'm just starting photography and I've heard good things about the 'nifty-fifty' lens for protriats, and that every photographer should have.
Great Video. I have and LOVE my $300 16mm RF lens. After buying the crazy expensive RF 28-70 f2 lens I figured I’d buy the cheap wide prime now and update it later with a more expensive one but honestly I don’t think I’ll need to. And I am VERY picky about lenses.
Love how in depth you go with the comparisons. I just realized I hadn’t subscribed to your channel yet. Love your content man. The first video I came across your channel was about your fitness journey. It’s definitely an inspiration 🙏👏🏽. I definitely need to get my hands on the nifty fifty. My love for photography fell off a bit with getting busy with work, but seeing your vids has inspired me again🤙🏽🤙🏽
The 50mm f/1.8 is one of my top three favorite lenses that I own. It’s fun to use and there’s just something about the look of the photos made with it that make me happy. It pretty much lives on my aps-c camera. 🤙🏼
I discovered your channel about a year ago and honestly glad I did because I watch your videos quite a bit along with my other favorite creators like Peter Mckinnon and Matti Hajoopa
Great comparison video! Thanks for doing so and sharing. In my opinion the nifty fifty should be in every photographer’s bag. It costs very little but the quality is really really good, let alone the size, weight vs the bigger siblings F/1.4, F/1.2Ls and even F/1.0L lol
What a nice review! My girlfriend started out with the nifty fifty and it blew her away coming from the set lens all the way back in 2015. The nifty fifty unfortunately broke down and she has been using 35mm since. Overall, great value for such a lens.
I'm using nifty fifty but in RF edition and It's unbelievable what that lens gives you for 180$ but the best cheap lens I ever used is definitely Canon EF M 22mm f/2...that lens is mindblowing! 🤯
The nifty fifty is a great lens and the most common option for a first prime lens for beginner photographers and videographers! I wouldn't say cheap but "cost-effective". Thank you for all the great content!
I think it's easy to get lens envy. Most of us will never use a lens to it's full capabilities and we should be aware of the need to develop our technique with what we have. It's great to have a vid like this to remind us of the virtues of cheaper older lenses
Love this video!!! I love the perspective of the 50mm. I love the way it can be used in various situations versus the 35mm which I love as well. Thanks for the video cant wait to see more!!
Great and interesting comparison. I always liked the 50 mm perspective, and think of it as the most versatile focal length for various situations. I’d love to have this lens as I’m on a fixed income and this would be a great leg up for me to get started in the photography world. Thanks 😊
hey Robert! CONGRATULATIONS🎉🥳🎊 you’ve been selected as the winner of this NIFTY50 giveaway! please DM me on my instagram ASAP for more details! here is my instagram: instagram.com/bryanadamc/
Hi Robert, I have not heard from you here or on Instagram since I announced you as the winner. Unfortunately, you have forfeit your chance to win this lens and I will be selecting a new winner. I appreciate the support and happy snapping! Bryan
@@BryanAdamCastillo I’ve been kicked off Instagram I guess because I haven’t used it. Very disappointed to hear you’ve picked someone else. I kept this text and I wondered when you were going to pick a winner. Wow this really hurts. 😢 You know some people are not very savvy when it comes to using Instagram or the Internet. You might consider allowing people contacting you via the texts so they don’t get penalized like I just did.
would just like to add on that if you like manual focusing, Canon mirrorless cameras can accept Canon FD and Minolta MD nifty 50s too (and basically most vintage lenses for super cheap)
I almost wish you shot the RF at f1.8 instead of f1.2 to match the nifty fifty in aperature to see the difference in bokeh at the same aperature. Love the incredibly in depth comparison and I’ve been looking at EF lenses for my girlfriend. I saw the nifty fifty and I’m pretty set on having her get that especially for what you get with sharpness, color, and bokeh for the price!
Wow I really liked the in depth comparisson between these lenses. it's crazy how a 150buck lense can compete with one that costs more than 10times as much.
I definetly cannot tell which lens shot the foliage but do prefer the shots at f 1.8 then f 1.2 and also prefer the vignetting. This was a helpful video. 😊 thanks
The nifty 50 must be the best lens with that price. It should be a must-have lens with photographer because it's so small, so cheap and nice performance.
I have used the "Nifty fifty" in one incarnation or another ever since I started shooting with an AT-1 in the '70s right up until today when I have it adapted to my M50 and EOS R. I see no reason to buy the RF 50mm f1.8 because I use the Canon EF-RF adapter with the control ring and the RF 50mm does NOT have dedicated focus and control rings. The adapted Nifty Fifty gives me both! Is the 50mm the ideal lens for all purpose shooting? No, I prefer the RF 24-105mm f4 for that, with a couple of others for my needs. But it has a place in my kit! As an aside, I think you need to discuss the RF 50mm f1.8 lens. Unless having full time manual focus is a MUST HAVE feature which is awkward to set up on an R body with it then it has a price point that makes it a worthy alternative to the Nifty Fifty on an adapter with possibly better optics.
This has got to be really weird, I am a simple man in his 50s I love photography because I suck at it. I recently purchased a Canon 80D with an Ef 18-135 lens for $ 579 in great condition on eBay. I love this camera. I also purchased the Nifty Fifty new. The strange part was yesterday I watched a video about the RF50MM 1.2 and wondered what is the difference & boom here is your video. I have also watched your healthy body transformation which I am currently doing so yea I am a new subscriber. Continue to have the time of your life.
Thank you for the good work on comparison here. Crazy how well the “plastic fantastic” holds up for its price point. Just discovered your channel but super well produced.
Excellent video and great samples; this shows we need to spend 15-times more to get 15% better performance. Those $2500 can buy a 50 1.8, 28 f1.8, 40 2.8, 100 2.8, a used 5Diii and still have a grand to spend on a photo trip!
Great video, the nifty 50 is always a solid place to start for beginners or when buying into a new system. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the new 24mm1.8 & 15-30mm lenses Canon announced today. Keep up the good work fam 🤙
Nice video. I sold my old EF 50 1.8 II to help pay for the RF 35 f1.8 and while I love both that lens and my Yongnuo RF 85 1.8, I do miss the nifty 50 as sometimes the 85 is too tight for a space but the 35 is too wide and can introduce distortion.
Thanks for the thorough and very well produced comparison. For me, sharpness is the one factor that would tip me in the direction of the RF f/1.2 lens. I do often print my images large, and find that the available software (Topaz Sharpen, Photoshop High Pass sharpening) doesn't really take care of unsharp detail. But I realize that most people don't regularly print at 24 x 36 and larger.
I have been looking at the NiftyFifty for a while because all I hear are great things and it fits my beginner budget. I just have not pulled the trigger. Another great/positive review so it might be time. Everyone deserves basic human decency.
I really enjoyed this video and it was perfect timing as I was trying to figure if the RF 50mm lens was worth it for the price. Thank you!

I love the production of this video!! You have an awesome eye for design and lighting.

This channel is an awesome mix of two things i love, keep the work up.
I appreciate the video. These type of comparison videos are always reassuring for the equipment that I use aka the nifty fifty lol but it also shows me what I can advance too aka expensive lenses like the 50mm 1.2 👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you for doing this video! I just recently got the Canon EOS R and am trying to figure out which lens to get first. This review helped so much!
By far one the best comparison on RUclips 👌👌👌waiting for more contain form you
I’m still using the kit lens.
Love the vid! Thanks! Reminding me to not always think that i need the best and most expensive lenses 🙏🏼 Thanks!

Photography is a hobby for me but with these instructions i feel like i got something to show people. Great review.
Thanks for the comparison, I'm thinking about buying a mirrorles canon camera and this type of videos solve many of my doubts.
This video really proves that the person using the tool is the most important thing. Great job!

I have a 50mm 1.8 rf and rented the 50mm 1.2 ef. That range has been one of my favorites next to 85mm when I have room for it.
Thanks for the comparison. I'm just starting photography and I've heard good things about the 'nifty-fifty' lens for protriats, and that every photographer should have.
I had a canon 50 1.8 and always wanted a 1.4 or 1.2 but after watching this video, i doubt my decision . Pretty awesome
Great comparison. I’m fearful of cheap anything, it’s always helpful to see something like the Nifty in the field.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is one of the finest portrait lenses on the earth. I own one and won't ever let go of it.
I discovered your channel about a year ago and honestly glad I did because I watch your videos quite a bit along with my other favorite creators like Peter Mckinnon and Matti Hajoopa
really really appreciate that man! to be grouped with those dudes is saying a lot so thank you!
It's unimaginable to think that the lens can be compared with the 2.5 canon. (Great job on the video.)
Thanks 😊

Great video, great colors, composition, lights and music on point
😊 thanks
wow who knew the comparison was so similar between these two lenses :o
great video and great content 👏🏼
pretty wild huh?! thanks so much!!
Such a inspiration to people with low budgets! Some people may not have the money to buy a expensive lens! Love it
The nifty 50 must be the best lens with that price. It should be a must-have lens with photographer because it's so small, so cheap and nice performance.
I picked this video because I wanted to learn about different lenses. This video has definitely helped me!! Thank you!!!
Great video. Thank you for your honest comparison between these two lenses. I was glad to see that the $150 f1.8 could hold its own.
The 50mm 1.8 was my first lens after the 18-55 and i still use it, is a war`s lens. I love it.
Excellent video and great samples; this shows we need to spend 15-times more to get 15% better performance.
Those $2500 can buy a 50 1.8, 28 f1.8, 40 2.8, 100 2.8, a used 5Diii and still have a grand to spend on a photo trip!
The plastic fantastic was my first lens for canon. And I am still using it - with an adapter on my Sony a7iii. Love it.
I would love to use the 50mm to help my photography, would be a set up from the kit lens
Such a great comparison video! I'm surprised how well the $150 lens does side-by-side with the Nifty Fifty!
Much love to your channel and everyone who enjoys watching.! Good luck to everyone on the giveaway as well.! How exciting❤️❤️❤️
If sharpness is important to you, then go with Sony FE 50mm f1.2
I have been looking at the NiftyFifty for a while because all I hear are great things and it fits my beginner budget. I just have not pulled the trigger. Another great/positive review so it might be time.
Everyone deserves basic human decency.
awesome what you can do with a cheap lense like this, this lens was my first into photography
