David, we met in Ann Arbor Mi, TP performance at the Power Center, You continue to be an inspiration and while playing all of the TP tracks in a show band while attending CMU was a blast, my nephew Chris Coleman, grew up listening to his dad (my twin who played sax) and I talk about the TP pocket and the role of the drummer. Don't stop teaching and being the funk master!

David you are an inspiration to all us Drummers. That is a wonderful idea to keep a journal of ideas, and or keeping track of your practicing habits.
Thank you for pointing out those books on personal growth, and that unique quote "Genius is persistence in disguise". Personally, I've always said that every Drummer has his own voice, on his or her creativity. ☮🙏 JRod.

    JOURNAL!!!!
There's gold in that word and process. I started doing this about 2-years ago and have been seeing positive dividends ever since. It's the perfect way to capture short/long term goals and the work you're actually doing to accomplish those goals. Not achieving your goals? Check the work your doing! Journaling forces you to be honest and accountable - honest with the actual work you're putting in; accountable to ensure the right time and effort to get the results you want. Additionally, it serves as a feedback process that really lets you manage expectations leading to more realistic goals. Do some research on SMART goals to get some ideas on how to create better goals/results.

I reside in a Studio apartment, once a Hotel Room, but can practice and play a electronic kit, etc.luckily with no complaints by neighbors, next door a guy plays electric guitar.,so the place is sort of soundproof. I enjoy playing along to CD's especially Tower of Power, D.G.the Jam Master's style has helped me groove on & of course along with other drummer legends, too. Check out the beginning intro to Mahdi,The Expected One on Lights Out,Voco that is a excellent song. By the way,I like Mr.G's signature Vic Firth Stick, too. Lastly,I've learned warm-ups stuff from the late Dave Bartlett & the late Sandy McKee of Cold Blood.(A Lefty) Soul in your own small space is the key,as Rocco would say," Where know one can touch you".

I play trumpet and drums (a little), so when I found TOP I immediately fell in love!! Anyway... There’s a lot to take away from what you said, even for someone like me who just plays for the fun of it. But I did fall into a gig years ago, albeit small...but I played drums for 7 yrs in a German band. I was still cutting my teeth when I hit the stage, and started out with barely any skill and improved as I went, and if I struggled with something I just faked it as best I could. No one complained. I kept perfect time. Free food, free beer and I got paid! But that was just icing on the cake because I was having a blast. I never thought about what I couldn’t play. That being said I do want to really learn to play well. And you’re right about genius. Thomas Edison said “Genious is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration”.

Dave is in that elite category of drummers who have created such a style that any time someone plays something similar, it will alway be referred to as a “Garibaldi style” groove.
I’d say that category consists of drummers like Dave Garibaldi, Keith Carlock, Steve Gadd, Jo Jo Mayer.... they just have a unique sound.
