There has been an overdose of Dave Weckl on RUclips in the last few days, short clinics, demonstrations, interviews, advice & stories. Keep it coming, can never get enough of the guy.
Not sure how many 'old' people are here, but over 20+ years ago (more like 30, don't remember, that's how old I am) he revolutioned the drums' world with Back to Basic. Lots of 'young' drummers don't know it. History is important :-)
I have to say it, Dave Weckl is on the Top25, right, more like Top10 at the very least, because he is number one for me. His approach on the drums and his skills to teach clearly important stuff that no one else really talking about is beyond words. Did you ever heard his chops, or him talking about eating salad and stay away from drugs, drinking? That's Dave Weckl, first class drummer and one of the best, if not the best. And he is backing everything with breathtaking chops, sound, performance, and the wow factor is not him doing stick trick but more like playing music in an incredible narural way, such high level, it makes everything look so easy like a walk in the park. But it's not easy at all. I will soon create my own RUclips channel to show to everybody how this guy influence is tremendous to me. With RUclips, it's a gift to see him and watch him play in HD, over and over again. There is no mystery left. Dave Weckl is just amazing.
Thank you Dave ... I've been listening to you since 1992 when you came out with your "Heads Up" album. That's still my favorite Jazz album of all time. Also, the "Heads Up" solo was the best overall solo I've ever heard. You have been a blessing to millions of people. Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us. We are ever so appreciative of your life and music. God bless you Dave! Percy
I saw him play with Mike Stern and Victor Wooten quite a few years ago. What an absolute spectacle that was! The musical connection they had was incredible. I had to pull my jaw off the floor with a shovel after they were done haha
Oh just another drum demo to watch except after a few minutes this is turning out to be something very special. This is what to aim for folks, relaxed playing that`s a joy to see & hear, beautifully executed on a drum set that sounds unbelievably melodic.Does it get any better than this? No, this is a hard act to follow.
Great standard, reliable, dare I say old school approach for developing musical approaches instead of pure fireworks/muscle dysplay. Been watching Dave for more than 30 years. Thanks very much Dave.
Thank you Dave Weckl and Sweetwater for your time and efforts to create this video - especially during quarantine. It IS a good time to be productive and this is so inspirational! Been a fan since the 80s.
Dave is a one of a kind. I remember taking away all of these concepts from his first video. And over the last 25-30 years I have applied those concepts everyday. It makes for really interesting playing!!!
Dave is sounding amazing... even more so than usual.. has been practising. Dave would sound like this on just about any drum set. Yeah amazing engineering, looks great etc, etc, Thanks for giving Dave a forum during this time to hear where he's at playing wise...STay safe. Thanks
This is the second time i've seen the floor tom to the left in someone's set up and the way you incorporate it with your fills and playing is inspiring!
Thanks Dave! Huge fan since early 80's. Love your technic. Your instruction is always welcome and I appreciate your ideas. I've had plenty of time to play during this covid time. I will put your expertise to use. Cant thank you enough! best of luck thru this!
No more COVID-19 stuff. I’m tired of hearing about and the whole atta boy thing. We are on the verge of civil war and many of us are suffering. So...don’t agree. I don’t follow what the herd thinks and does.
I'd have to say, Dave's playing is so distinctive that you can recognise it's him even before you know who the band is. Something you don't get with other players. Awesome clinic such a master of drumming, Thank you.
Identification. That was one of the greatest comments I could have ever received as a musician, was when I'm told "I recognize your playing immediately". Lars Ulrich has it too. Gadd. Buddy.
@20:23 is the Chick Corea tune "Again and Again" which Dave actually played on his 1988 video Back to Basics but used brushes on that tune. It would've been nice if soloed during the drum solo section instead of stop before it.
Hey Dave gotta tell ya you still got it and what I mean by it if course crazy drum skills and teaching skills! Back in the day when I was going to be the next best drummer in the world a guy at the music store where I bought my first kit recommended a VCR tape and it was yours basics begginer tapes I bought them and watched them all over and over actually learned a lot well as time goes and we all have to make a living and all that crap I haven't touched a drum stick in years, trued to get my grandson's into drumming one didn't have a chance and did not care the other was a natural but didn't care to drum but he had it and could of been real good anyway i m old as hell now and and wish I could of stuck with it, I've got two granddaughter s and trying to get them interested without pushing it on them so I jumped on google and of course googled your name looking a little bit older but still amazing drummer and teacher it's crazy I found one of the videos I had and it made me wanna drum just like I did when I first started, that set off the spark my granddaughters and I will be watching back to basic and all your old videos to get started and keeping up with you just wanna say thanks for doing what you do your awesome as always and who knows my granddaughters just might be the next Best drummers in the world!! Sorry so long and hope that kinda made since thank you
Since I started playing, I've sung drums. When I started, I was nine years old, and I learned by copying what I heard on the radio (whatever was popular in 1986!). I never gave it any thought until I had played a huge battle of the bands when I was in high school. There was a guitar rig issue which resulted in me playing a drum solo in front of my high school, and the high school of the neighboring city... But I was a huge ham back then, had no fear, and I loved soloing... After the performance, a bunch of people asked me how I was able to play that solo. Was is rehearsed? If not, how could I just make it up? It was at that point I realized that I sang everything to myself. I was seventeen, at that point. High school junior in 1994. It was also the night I knew what it felt like to be a rockstar. I take for granted that I was able to experience such support at such a young age, to be regarded by classmates, local musicians, and adults in the community as a "great" drummer. Because I sang my drum parts..
It's nice to hear Dave with all the 'Zoom style glitching' i have to deal with while i'm teaching all week long... call me when it's over. Weckl fan sinie the early 90's
When I was younger, a great drummer friend of mine, before we ever played together would use our mouths to jam - he'd do the drums and I would be the colors/percussion. We knew right then that we had something special between us. We later played together in various projects and our own drums only recordings. So yeah - sing! And maybe even do like us, get a custom van, hang out at a park or graveyard, throw on some Brand X and jam with some fellas on whatever stuff you have in the van - drum heads, bottles etc. Best of times.
I saw Dave in a clinic in Atlanta back in the early 90s and that clinic has always stuck with me. I remember him talking though positioning and drum kit approach at length at the beginning and some guys being really impatient about him not "playing a solo". Dave was respectful but firm in his defense of what he was talking about. These guys got dismissed for being "jerks" and the rest of the clinic was better and more positive. I don't love a lot of the music Dave tends to be recorded on, but still he has always been one of my favorites. This session is no different.
Ha! I saw him in Greensboro, NC in the early 90s, probably same week as you! Maybe 15 semi-interested people there but I knew I was in the midst of greatness! Great teacher...
Yeah love the new flat ride. I saw the NAMM viseo that Dom Famularo did where he featured it (and another 18" protoype based on the cymbal Roy Haynes played on Now He Sings, Now He Sobs). I like the name "Urban Flat Ride." I think it's the perfect name for that model. Loved the sound of the prototype on the Akoustic Band Live set. The problem I've always had with flats is that they can be so one dimensional. Lots of tick but really nothing else. I picked up two over the last couple years that go against that, a K Light Flat (I've since seen Bill Stewart and Marcus Gilmore playing that model) and a K Constantinople flat. You can dig in, crash them, everything you can do with a regular ride but they don't overpower. This new Sabian seems to have those same qualities. Love it.
Thanks Dave - love your play - Master Plan is still my favorite but I now time flies 😊 many drummers has a "dead" left hand, but if you give some of the right hand Work, it gets much more funny
I love how he says the same things as Victor Wooten about the thought and approach to music, like thinking melodies and singing. The instruments are supposed to sing their own song in a conversation with the other instruments. It's all about communication, not technicality. Practice is supposed to be rigid but when playing "music" the point is to forget the technical stuff and let it come out intuitively.
Horrendous quality makes this video unwatchable. The last thing I want in a brilliant lesson from Dave is glitching and skipping of the video due to some crappy video call program. Just awful.

Why just 28 minutes 😢Dave Was giving so much information. I hope to have the chance to have one more live stream with Dave again. Thanks
@@OficialLeandroVidotto Check out the session from Vic Firth.
Joe Rico thanks for sharing, i checked already, was indeed very instructional and in very high quality, I really enjoyed. Thanks again. 🙏
I like Dave Weckl’s new look. He looks like a drumming mad scientist! Incredible drummer.
He definitely is a mad scientis of drumming😂

danlc95 indeed!!!
That one stroke roll in Back to Basics is from another planet...
Leonel Cerda when does he do a one hand roll in back to basics?
@@gregn8206 one STROKE roll, not one HAND roll

I was thinking the same thing. Top 5 for me easily.

Probably my biggest influence on drums.

Man, we are very grateful for Mr Weckl. He has been playing professionally since the early-mid 80's. Thank you Dave! 😊
I saw him play with Mike Stern and Victor Wooten quite a few years ago. What an absolute spectacle that was! The musical connection they had was incredible. I had to pull my jaw off the floor with a shovel after they were done haha
The audio feed can’t always handle the awesomeness of his drumming. Funny.
Fantastic video! Dave is one of the few top drummers who constantly improves his skills. Very inspirational.

Thank you fantastic! Great set up👍💥✨😎🥁🥁
Dave is the true Professor of drumming!
I'm not even a drummer but I've been a fan since Master Plan, he's so amazing, seen him live several times!
Very precious lesson! Thank you 😀😀👏👏👏
Gems of information explained so well and all for free.
Lol, Dave is soo good that he even sounds great over zoom.
THE BEST DRUMMER!!
Outstanding Dave
I've always been fascinated with mr. Weckl triplet feel. Damn, he's really a pioneer and master of that subdivision/feel (at least in my opinion).
You are correct dude.
very informative thank tou for sharing Dave!
This is the second time i've seen the floor tom to the left in someone's set up and the way you incorporate it with your fills and playing is inspiring!
To find your talent is one thing but to develop it like Dave Weckl is another thing!!!!
Weckls barber always been “ahead of time” 🤙🏽😆

This was a great presentation. I learned quite a bit here.
Just the perfect exercise for my soloing! Just what the doctor ordered for turning the lockdown into an opportunity.
Rockin’ that mad scientist look!
So true , when youre able to sing your groove youre able to play it simple as that ... Luc Rockology MTL
Excellent stuff.
Just awesome, as usual - very inspirational. Makes you want to practice!! And PLAY.

Sorry for Chicks passing and the impact it has on you personally. I am very grateful for all the music you created with him.
Dave.... Numero 1
Dave could turn some Rachel Ray pots upside down and make them sound amazing. He makes it look so easy, it makes me want to take up drums.
Cool concepts! :) The 21" Pure Gold.
This makes my day
What a pleasure!
one of the greatest, for shure...

That’s some sweet gear
Absolutely awesome 👍👍👍👍
Is it me or the audio some times lags? Either way Dave Weckl ❤️🔥 & Sweetwater 💙
Little trouble hearing the Flatso (hows that for a name?)
man, I love this guy. #legend
30 years ago i had paid a vhs like this 100.000 lire (italian money at time).100 box.THX.
Im just a speed demon and I hold my sticks in that fulcrum too. Really brings your blast moments into a smooth roll.
just great
Checking out some of your older things during the covid 19 episode.
very nice video, I like it.

Dave’s sung drums literally sound better than me on an actual kit
Very good drummer
great player.
be honest Dave, you love rocking the mullet, the silver mullet👀👍🏻😬
Hey Dave - cuz of the pandemic I got myself a self-haircutting kit. Works great! Never again will I pay to have it done.
Best ever
I love Weckl and thank you for the upload but is anyone else experiencing bad quality?? Watching him play the kit was like all glitchy and weird
Horrendous quality makes this video unwatchable. The last thing I want in a brilliant lesson from Dave is glitching and skipping of the video due to some crappy video call program. Just awful.
Probably wanna blame Skype and internet providers for that one
still love his drumming!!
Glórias à Deus!
