@@enshongmiranda are you on discord if you don’t mind? I’m on the fence about buying a BDB and couldn’t get clarity on a couple questions. If you don’t mind can I ping you there and ask you a couple questions?
hi mate. love the vid. just getting used to the dual boiler. so you are going into the pre infusion menu and setting the time to 25s? and how do you set the 3g/s? I have an infusion percentage kind of setting only. thanks. HNY
Set pre-infusion time to what you like and the %. The % will determine how much g/s of water flows. You can check that by setting the % and run the machine on pre-infusion for 30s and weigh the water that comes out of the grouphead directly. Divide that weight by the 30s pre-infusion time.
DBD is an amazing home machine, i got one too. Learn to do basic maintenance and it's a solid unit as well. I got a Sette 270 WI as a grinder, bit plasticky but it's quick and very precise.
@@giodc8599 I also have the Sette 270 WI, was using it with a Rancilio Silvia, but I think its not going fine enough for espresso. Its on the finest setting! Anyway. I just got the BDB so we'll see with that, may get the Mazzer Mini Electronic A Grinder after recommendation.
Hello! May I ask how did you change the preinfusion pressure and time? I currently own a BDB also and would like to experiment on these kind of shots too 😊
I think it is doable since the Oracle and the Dual Boiler are similar apart from the built in grinder and automatic frothing on the Oracle. As long as you can set the pre-infusion pressure and duration, you can do it.
"poor" , but in all seriousness I get it. Been having alot of fun playing with the flair 58 and getting a variety of flavors from the same coffee by simply modifying my pull and dialing in my prep. But I see myself upgrading to a BDB cause I cant help but feel Im missing out on a little more with PID temp control. I always feel rushed to preserve my water temp even though I know it's not dropping below 190 that fast
I saw in a comment you have now done the slayer mod. Was it an easy mod to do? Without modding, can you also use the hot water knob to reduce flow at the group head?
I switched back to this method for a little automation. It's fairly easy. You can find videos about it by searching. As for the hot water knob, you still have to open up the top and reposition the toggle switch at the water knob as it turns on the pump for the water outlet if you turn the knob and stops extraction. You'd still also want to reroute the water outlet hose unless you want to continually waste water and fill up your drip tray.
hey Enshong, I saw you on the DF64 group, and i think this is quite a good try, however, you can also try to have manual pre-infusion by holding the manual button, the pre-infusion will be as long as you hold the button, then you can try on the "slayer" style shot
I know but I want to automate things as much as possible since I do the same grind and beans anyway. I just use the volumetric programming and set the pre-infusion pressure and time. I don't want to keep holding the manual button every time I do a shot. I don't want to modify the hot water tap too.
@@kelvinsee656 Yeah. I just dial in at the start and middle of the day. It's been very consistent so far. Really easy with this combo. Hopefully, the Dual Boiler will be able to last for some years though. Lol.
@@enshongmiranda do you still recall what grind setting you used for this extraction? I have a df64 also and I am already grinding at number and I tried this same extraction with 25secs pre infusion and my total time was only 33 secs
dunno what grind setting I was at and it's also incomparable because it depends on your beans and I also have a custom sticker for my grind indicator. Also, the zero point might also be different. You'll just have to find the right variables for you. Try grinding finer.
Not at all. The water flow rate is slow that it gently saturates the puck much more evenly and once the whole puck is equally wet, the extraction goes smoothly and evenly. Less chance of channeling, less chance of over/under extraction. The time from full saturation of the puck to the end of your extraction, it's just around 25-30 seconds. The resulting espresso though feels stronger, not more bitter, like it has more caffeine in it. Must be because the longer contact time with water lets more coffee compounds go with it. I use medium roasted beans though. If using dark roast, it might come out more bitter. I usually just adjust the brew temp depending on how the beans look. I use the Slayer mod now though which produces slightly more syrupy texture and great with milk.
Wonderful breakdown of the shot. I usually only take note of whether my shot comes together, to determine if it's an even extraction, but I happened to notice some balding on the basket as I took a peek under the portafilter during a shot pull, so I'm getting a shot mirror to better see the development and full extraction. How is the evenness of the basket during your extractions?
Sometimes there seem to be dead spots initially, sometimes there are none. Fresher coffee usually doesn't have dead spots while it happens usually when the beans get older. It really doesn't bother me as I can't taste any difference. As long as there's no obvious channeling, I'm good.
@@enshongmiranda I've resorted to using a WDT device to move more of the grounds away from the area that usually has some balding. I'm going to keep testing with this method and keep looking at the basket throughout the extraction. This morning I've been pulling the following recipe with good results, but I've only tested twice: 4ml/s until the brew dial starts to move, then ramp down to 1.5ml/s until 25 seconds, ramp up to 5ml/s to reach just above 8bar for the rest of the shot. I'll keep testing this out for the upcoming week and let you know how it goes.

Thx for the video. BDB does this out of the box without mods? I thought the slayer shot is a mod for the BDB.
For this method, yes out of the box. No mods needed. Just some changes to the settings. However, I did mod my BDB eventually.

Hi Enshong, thanks for this great video. Are you grinding your beans on a finer setting in order to obtain this result?
Yes, finer than usual for this extended pre-infusion method. For the actual slayer-style pre-brew method, even a little finer.

At 55%
