I'm a police officer in Spain, and in 1988 I had one of these, a little more modern, as my cruiser, and it was slow but very capable. Awesome restoration and electrification!! 👏👏👏
This vehicle is a real beauty! I'm so impressed with the work your team is doing. I wish they would use electric vehicles for safari work, it would make the experience so much more enjoyable.
Series 2A, because it's close to the original concept whilst having decent weather protection. The Defender is arguably more comfortable, but if you're using it as an agricultural vehicle, then hose-down cleanability is more of a priority.
I really miss my 2a . Had rh drive headlights in the grill and lh headlights in the wings . No spotlights required all on a 3 way switch. Would definitely go with the 2a even with the leaf springs . Great video,Moggie keep smiling everyone
Lovely restoration and conversation!! I had an early 2A plus a Range Rover Bobtail on a shortened chassis but always wanted (still want?!?!) a series 1…
Love them all Richard, but still driving my Disco 2a TD5 , 20yrs old this year and still going strong . The Deefer's are fetching big money down here in Australia now, but I did see a Grenadier on the road yesterday............ You've got 3 yrs to make a kit for the Disco 2 mate 🙂 Cheers Gregg
never was an envy person. perhaps sometimes other peoples talents, musicians etc. but right now my face has the same colour as this beautiful landrover
I love this version Land Rover. It is what I refer to as "goofy-cool". Making it electric basically removes all the problems of owning one. This one is in such mint condition, it's beyond mint condition as well. I would love to own such a car.
Series 1 is my fave. Helped convert a series 1 with side valve engine, to a 3.9 litre V8 with custom transfer box. Before we converted it drove it around manchester and over to huddersfield and loved it. Would love to convert it to electric now. One thing I have noticed about all these conversions, there is no sound generator below 20mph. Thought the law states electric cars must produce a sound below 20mph, to warn other pedestrians (like blind people and elderly) and animals that they are there. Nice series 2a thoe.
Would love another chance to drive either a IIA or a Defender - the only time I've driven a IIA was the first vehicle I ever drove.... after spotting a farmer who had been chainsawing a big old oak and managed to trap his leg, crushing it between the horizontal trunk and a 4ft thick branch in the middle of nowhere - after running a mile and a half to the nearest pub (mobile phones were only for Yuppies, Ministers of the Realm and Detective Chief Inspectors in those days!) I ran back and met up with the ambulance crew who asked if I would drive them and the stretcher across the field to the farmer in his own Series IIA --- still the only Landy I've ever driven sadly, though I've been a passenger in a few and a nearby neighbour has the oldest roadworthy original (it's a beaut and tiny - so small at 80 inches you could almost cuddle it!)
Drove a lot of these when I was an engineer on motorway construction sites many moons ago! Not easy to drive when you were 3 up for sure. This is another fabulous conversion, the driver interface is so simple. Like you Richard, I prefer the Defender, to many hard memories of the 2a on sites long ago 😂🏴👍
I like both! The steering on the original was geared fairly light, though had a lot of play. On the one our family had back in the day, the ball and socket joint to the throttle would occasionally come loose. I see you love these so much you have series II door hinges on your Defender!😅
The series 2A was the best! I waas about 7years old when I saw my first Land Rover (circa 1950) and thought then what a fantastic thing!! It was to be 25 years before I could afford one, a 1961 Series II SWB - what a machine! An addition of twins to the family meant that we needed something a bit bigger and in 1981 we bought a 1964 Series IIA LWB Safari and kept it for thirteen years - another great vehicle. Your conversions are a joy to behold - thanks for the videos.
I prefer the looks of the older Series 2A. It looks more like my childhood Matchbox car model than the newer model on Land Rover. Wouldn't say "No!" to either vehicle, though. Either one is perfect!
Very nice option if you live near the mountains and also have solar energy installed at home :D I'd really like to know how much one of these builds could cost, without the luxury touch, of course, but with all the Tesla power living underneath that bonnet.
I still miss my S2A. It was pretty much indestructible! That one is tasty, but all that attention to detail and nobody bothered to put covers on the seatbelt top mounts?! 😄
I love these conversions...... nothing more entertaining than reading all the triggered beardy middle aged mens comments complaining and talking nonsense. Keep up the good work 👍👍⚡
As a 41 year old fit tall bearded male myself who loves ev tech. This comment made me chuckle quite heartily. 👍🏻😁 Moggy teslarossa new suspension update please? It seems y'all are never gonna give the owner their shiny red baby back at this rate. 😀
Again well done 👍, looks you have changed it completely - Question is how much of the „Landrover-soul“ have been restored? It is legendary for its off-road capabilities but as well for its unfiltered ride. Congrats to your customer, maybe she will share her expiriences
Fabulous restoration. My personal choice for wheels would have been Forward Control or banded Rostyle rims rather than the Wolf ones, but that’s just my opinion. 👍
Very, very, great and outstanding, thx a lot. I prefer Defender, cause i owned one and If i ever earned money enough, i'll convert it to electric drive as yours!
Defender to drive and generally live with, but the series2A for looks. Btw a cracking job on that 2A like the way you've tried to keep it original looking, only when you look really closely do you realise it's all EV, some nice touches, like what you've down with the rear badge, great stuff 👍
Looks amazing. I wonder how durable these conversion kits are? I see some of the motors, like on the fiat 500 was mounted really close to the ground, and seemed to have vents/openings, but there were no splash protection?
@@spudproductions7606please put a trigger warning somewhere near the beginning for the petrol heads. That way when they burst a blood vessel they will at least have been warned.
Really, it's about time you convert a long wheelbase Series 3, probably ex-army. Something where the paint and style aren't precious, so you can just concentrate on making a rugged & capable vehicle.
I can say that this looks superb in the metal too. I very much enjoyed my day in a couple of weeks ago, started off rainy but got much better later in the day!
Was obsessed with Land Rovers as a kid, finally got a 2A at 19 and while I was getting it roadworthy (Nissan hut for a year) My mate got hold of a damaged 90 - diesel and put the immaculate v8 he had in his Series 3 in it and built the perfect v8 90. Other friends had been running modified Range Rover chassis under Land Rover bodies for years. Coil springs and disc brakes are what made the Range Rover so perfect. Could never go back to cart springs and drums! Hate with a passion the whole "Defender" marketing rebrand. They were 90's and 110's. Now EVERY Land Rover gets called a "Defender" by the uninformed based on the shape! Lightweight airportable Action Man replica Series 3 on a modded galv' Rangey chassis. _That'll_ _do_ _nicely_ !
Glorious machines and great work - I’d take either. Question about the drive train…is it permanently in 4 high then? And doesn’t this create a problem for travel on dry, paved roads where the usual slippage that’s needed on older mechanical 4WD systems can’t be had?
I want one ! But I'm in France, so it's forbidden, because, for any question about vehicles, french government first asks our two champions: Renault and PSA, so everything is forbidden 😭
I’ve driven Landys - marginally less comfortable than an MGB GT. What was it about the British auto industry? Uncomfortable on four wheels and a Triumph wasn’t a Triumph if it didn’t leave the factory with an oil leak.
Not that it should bother anyone with a 70kWh battery, but that CCS connector underneath the old fuel cap will only be suitable [at fastest speed] for Type 2 charging [anything between 7-22kW]. Now if we, in the UK, adopt the NACs [yes, the classic Tesla] connector we could have rapid charging in that confined plug space. Just saying.
@@ElectricClassicCars OK understood. Over here, three phase cannot work through the new digital electricity meters. So you have to lease and pay a monthly rental for the manual meter to have 3 phase on your property . The installers have to apply on your behalf.
Great videos but I have a question and maybe a challenge. I drive a Jeep Wrangler and would love to go electric but as far as I can tell there is nothing made that would work. I live in Canada and we get 3 months with temperatures between -10 and -20 so lots of power is needed to heat the interior and keep the batteries warm. We also live 80km from the nearest small town so need a 'daily driving' range of about 100km under winter conditions. Our nearest sizable city is a bit over 1000km which is well beyond the current practical range. Even with a lunch stop and fast charge that would require a massive battery pack. My ideal solution would seem to be an electric range of about 150km plus a range extender that would provide enough power to cruise at highway speeds. According to Jeep their hybrid electric version uses about 1/2kw/hr per km (35km on a 17hr pack) so that would suggest a battery pack of around 75kw/hr plus the extra power for winter driving so around 100kw/hr and an onboard charger, gas or diesel that gives around 1.5kw at 220v. That is basically a portable genset! But built in so it runs safely. Have you ever considered something on these lines?
I have 2 of Roverd , 1967 series 2a 109 and mid 80s 90 defender wolf. I love the smell of diesel and all the rattling they make. Wouldn't change any of it. In a more modern world we are now living in all those electric vehicles are nice and quite but not my style. Im more down to earth. This guy probably has 2 electric gas powered generators in the back seats
What did the ec conversion kit cost ? Where did you get it from. I wanted to do that to mine , but no one seems to do I kit for it.
