Cleverly started off with 75% battery at the top so all that lovely heavy regen had somewhere to go. I'd have loved to know what the battery was at the bottom? Also what happens to all that energy if the battery was full and you needed that Regen to slow you down? That would have come out as heat right? Can the cooling systems cope with that?
@Electric Classic Cars The dead of winter is an expression meaning the coldest day. Where I'm from this last December, we have had temperatures in the 20s C (70s F) to as low as -30C (-22F). In the video, I didn't see anyone's breath, meaning it was likely above 7C (45F). I love to have an electric 4x4, the issue is battery drain and charge on cool days.
next time ..... when done.. use a diesel generator to charge the tesla powered ones and compare the volume of diesel needed to do this.... with the using the diesel engines to to go same route
@@ElectricClassicCars who sells a Tesla locker? I’ve seen the lsd but not a full lock. I’ve got an 88 Mitsubishi montero that would be insane with a Tesla drivetrain
Great comparison and a really interesting video. The off road mode is presumably needed to prevent drivetrain component damage due to the availability of instant, unrestrained 100% torque without it. Very clever indeed. Real shame you completely ignored the long-standing Voluntary Restraint though, which is to prevent excessive damage caused by driving the lane in an uphill direction. Sadly this vid may only encourage others to do the same, hastening the inevitable TRO and consequent ban.
The off road mode just makes it easier to drive in slow technical sections, as well as other advantages like hi regen for hill descents. Someone else has mentioned this voluntary restraint in the comments. I live local and wasn't aware of it. No signs on the lane either to explain it. Where did you hear of this and who has put that in place as nobody seems to know about it. Lots of people were doing it uphill when we were there.
From Wikiloc: Horseshoe lane (aka b/stard lane) the (Snowdonia national) park ask that you drive this in a one way s to n direction until it swaps to a w to e where it drops down to the waterfall, to minimise any futher damage as trying to drive up the waterfall is leading to oil and fluids getting into the holiday villages water supply. For any futher info you can contact the parks head access officer Peter Rutherford on O79OO2674538 or office on O176677O274 GLASS also have it marked as VR downhill only on Trailwise2. I live locally too and have done it in both directions (pre VR) and going uphill is more challenging. Presumably many users, even if aware of the VR, ignore it for this reason. There was physical signage at one time, but it routinely "disappeared".... HTH and thanks for your further comment re. Offroad mode.
Are conversion prices coming down with the bolt in kits ramping up? You all did well in tricky conditions. Mine would be fine on bastard lane as is. Would be good to compare M57 conversion costs to the Electric conversion costs for a realistic comparison.

Or I just need to hold my breath, or maybe Santa will bring me some scuba gear. 😁👍
And be able to hold your breath. 👍😀😂
Now do the same test in the dead of winter!
This was done in December.
Nice one Moggy, loved it.
Richard, why the hell do you not put a single cab roof on your Defender ? Make it far more practical for the winter.
Just wear appropriate clothing. My dad is a year round biker, maybe I've inherited his mindset. 😆👍
I did feel sorry for the guy driving Richard's defender at the start all bundled up in cold weather clothing.
next time ..... when done.. use a diesel generator to charge the tesla powered ones and compare the volume of diesel needed to do this.... with the using the diesel engines to to go same route
Why? Most of the electricity to change the EVs comes from renewables. 👍😀
@@spudproductions7606now add solar panels to the roof
Would be pretty rad to sort out a locker for that tesla drive. triple locked electric would be slick.
Easily done but so far I've not needed it so not done it. 👍
For any futher info you can contact the parks head access officer Peter Rutherford on O79OO2674538 or office on O176677O274
GLASS also have it marked as VR downhill only on Trailwise2.
Amazing but how much do they cost ?
Brilliant, really smart what you have done
Are conversion prices coming down with the bolt in kits ramping up? You all did well in tricky conditions. Mine would be fine on bastard lane as is. Would be good to compare M57 conversion costs to the Electric conversion costs for a realistic comparison.
Actually I think electric is still way too expensive for the mass but for the diesel you can convert yours to run on used oils for the restaurant at the corner of your house 😅😅😂
I love the electric landys. All that torque and fine control. I do like the trooper too.
Not sure how I missed this, great test. Hywel's Nintey sounds lovely and smooth (very nice overall) but I'd take EV any day. So much control, better than the best automatic. I really should change career from IT to working with these.
Thanks 👍😀
You guys are sooooooooooo clever, excellent camerawork, genuine jealous!
ps I'm the guy with a 'scope on the dash of my wasserboxer 2.1 so thanks for the look around the EV Wizard's Works of Wales the other day. Jamie.
Hi Jamie. Great to meet you the other day. We loved your VW T3. 😎👌
@@ElectricClassicCars By the way I passed my EV masters training over at Church Stratton. OVA guys really do in-depth stuff. I pointed them in your direction too.
Thanks for the comment on camera work. 👍😀😀
Interesting that when it comes to offroad, the diesel ones have the range anxiety 😁
Of course with electric, you have the regeneration when going downhill which adds to the range.
I like how quiet they are and how much more control the electric driveline seems to have.
👍👍
I take it the electric conversions can work with factory axles and drivetrains to preserve any diff locks that may/may not be installed?
Yep, you can still install ARB lockers if need be but after years of serious off roading I've not once found that I needed to them as they've got 3 ATB diffs in, one in each axle and on in the middle. 👍
@@ElectricClassicCars I see, was very impressed with the remaining range of the electric defender to!
