We traveled over dried flood plains that had had buffalo on them all wet season. Once it dried, it was more comfortable to walk beside the Landy than drive it, sitting in it.
My Australian Holden 202ci powered 110, I just hang on, and see if we get to where I pointed it... my fav. No electronic crap... Go on a Advanced 4x4 trip, with the Maverick, new Landcruiser, Isuzu.. and deep water crossing.. drive to other side.. set up camp.. grab a beer and enjoy the show.. 🤪
Learnt to drive on the farm in the 60s. Never occurred to me there was any other way to drive. Found road cars a bit strange with their willingness to go where pointed.
Always said old Land Rovers were one of the few vehicles ever made that could be easily adapted to new tech, even if it spent the last 30 years in a hedge somewhere. The fact you can pretty much dismantle every part of one with a pair of molegrips and a mallet means that if it's well enough maintained, there's no reason why we won't still see a few still knocking around 60+ years from now! Certainly more environmentally friendly than the current trend of writing a car off after 10 years because it's financially unviable to repair!
The other you could rely on…. Was cost!!!! To keep on the road.Cheep as chips. 👍 even with prices today old defenders are cost effective to run. My insurance for a series 3 today is only 100 quid!!! I’ve been driving old landys for 40 years now, can’t bet them. Turning them to electric is for the foolish.
Well done gents. I used to be a full time Land Rover mechanic and wanted to turn them in to electric. especially the Series one and Series 2. Now you've gone and done it. Thank you for fulfilling my life long dream.
I should have added that Richard is brilliant, and his classic car renovations and conversions are simply incredible. The engineering to seamlessly integrate modern high-powered motors into older drivetrains is non-trivial, but the result is beautiful. Would be cool to have links in the description to the FC episodes with Richard’s VW Beetle and Porsche 911 conversions.
People who says money can’t make me happy can bugger off. Imagine been able to afford this conversion without being crippled in debt. Lord when is my time.
soon as a company sells the motors and batteries from new the prices should drop substantially. The equivelent of a crate motor. there are relatively cheaper conversions. richard in video does kits for beetles minis and land rovers, Swift do now as well the guys that used to build btcc engines. but all the tesla stuff has to come over second hand mainly from US i think he said so costs increase etc. if you are in UK and havent already theres his show Vintage voltage on quest/discovery+ or his you tube channel. , the delorean, and the two old beamers one a bat wing csi replica were exceptional, the bmw isetta looked hilariously terrifying :D sorry for essay i love this stuff
I was freaked out by the 'play' in the steering wheel, first time I drove my Defender. It makes sense though once you're off road. Without that play the steering wheel would be snatched out of your hands and you'd lurch off to the side first time you drove through a deep pothole, gulley or over a rock strewn track. Despite it all, the easiest of cars to drive. I'd love to electrify my Landy. Maybe one day.
Rubbish! The play in the steering is due to general wear and lack of maintenance. Replace(if needed) the trackrod ends and take out the play by adjusting the steering box. If that doesn't cure the wandering, then replace it!
You need to look up “Dunning-Kruger” before you make the claim that someone else has posted “Rubbish!”. What you have posted suggests that this first class (and very expensive) renovation and EV conversion of a classic vehicle had somehow left the steering in a sloppy, knackered state. As a poster wiser than you has added below, this is not “play” in the steering but deliberately designed-in torsion spring shock absorption, precisely to prevent the wheel being wrenched out of your hand when navigating rough terrain. Richard explains in the video that his goal is to retain as much of the classic vehicle engineering and behaviour as possible when integrating modern EV technology - did you even watch it? Or just scan down the comments to find one you could jump in and insult first?
That old Landy there had Arm Strong steering & when I learnt to drive I was very quickly taught to Never put your thumb inside the steering wheel or you'd loose it the next time it got a hard yank from rocks or whatever you ran over. Oh yea good times
When I switched to an electric vehicle in 2019 I didn't miss changing gears and spinning wheels at all. Accelerating as fast as possible without spinning the wheels is much more fun.
I lke Moggy. He's a natural, and his temperament balances Robert and Jack beautifully. This is better than Top Gear ever was, and it's more informative than that show, too.
You can easily see where Robert's previous experience of driving Land Rovers for years shone through; he just put his foot down & powered through that ford whereas Jack hesitated slightly. I'm extremely jealous of Robert; I learnt to drive in a Land Rover very much like that one, starting out as an 8 year old at about 3am on a freezing cold wet winter's morning while Dad fed out hay to our cows off of the back. And I didn't even do the Kangaroo hop that most drivers do when they 1st start out; I think Dad was secretly quite proud of his VERY young daughter. 😜😅
WOW!!! What a great video!! It's got to be one of the best ever Fully Charged shows!!! So glad to see Richard from Electric Classic Cars there. He does fantastic conversions!!!
Could this be my favourite episode of Fully Charged ever? I love Robert and Jack together, and then the poor camera guys bouncing around in the back of the follow truck... I'm in stitches. Comedy gold.
Landy's in their natural habitat. This is the best natural history show you've ever done. Seriously, it's the best show you've ever done. You and Richard need to team up more often. Absolutely brilliant, from start to finish, including the 'camera' crew. And thew humour was exactly what was needed. More of this, please! Thanks to all involved. 👌 😀👍
Awesome video and hats off to the camera guys as this was a test of endurance for them. I enjoy all the conversions these guys do in Vintage Voltage. 👍👍
I enjoyed that but for now these are toys for the well-to-do. As to farming with battery powered farm equipment, for years to come this will be a pipe dream. Anybody that knows about farming can sort you out on that. Plows, cultivators or any tillage equipment for that matter would have Tesla batteries whimpering in no time. Ditto for combines, forage harvesters, balers or potato diggers.
LOVE this, reminds me of a mini Top Gear/Grand Tour special. Plus your honourary host is back who has been on the channel before and I love what he and his company does. Plus a proper map. This has to be up there as one of my favourite episodes, particularly loved the cinematography up there with the stuff from Dubai back when Jonny was with the show.
Wow! That looked like good _dirty_ fun... 🤣😂😅 I've finally figured out the *British* road naming system: *A* roads are for _Automobiles_ *B* roads are for _Bicycles_ *C* roads are for _Chariots_ *D* roads are for _Dog carts_ *H* roads are for _Horses_ *L* roads are for _Long Canal Boats_ *M* roads are for _Mangy Horses_ *W* roads are for _Walking next to your horse at a leisurely pace._
But you never will go with an electric car on an expedition. Never ever. Imagine being somewhere more than 1000 kilometers away from a valid option to recharge would make me very nervous. With fossil fuel you just have some extra petrol can with you. Not possible with a battery at the current stage of technology. Maybe somewhere in the future. Also if you are underway in a 3rd world country, it's very likely to find a mechanic who can repair your car, esp. when it's an older landrover. No chance with electric. So in Europe where except for rare special cases and all those driving it for fun, an electric Landrover could make sense, in most areas of the world it doesn't.
My all time favourite vehicle. The thought of its demise saddened me but that all electric landy fills my heart with hope that one day I’ll be able to afford such beauty
Really pleased to see Rob and Jack trying out the Land Rover EVs that I'd previously seen on Richard's Classic Cars channel. I knew they'd love them. This is one of the most fun things I've seen them do together. I'm envious. I wish Rob could have been a tinsy bit braver and gone up something a bit steeper than a dropped kerb. It would have been worth it for the screams. Looking forward to seeing the Landies at Fully Charged Live.
Ultimate off-roader? One word.... Rivian. But it is great to see vehicles that people love, being converted to electric drive trains so that their owners can continue to enjoy them for many more years.
Robert makes a fair point the fact that farmers can generate their own electricity, aside from the initial investment, to operate such vehicles is the closest to free that you can make it, with all the benefits you can never imagine. This video also points out how painfully inefficient and destructive waste spewing vehicles are.
Robert. Whilst minimal maintenance may suit new vehicles used for the school run, off roading, requires careful inspection and attention to every component on a regular basis. They still have diff oil, swivel grease and suspension wear.
Jack: Shall I dress up like a farmer from the 70s … (like you Robbie!)? 🤣🤣 Fantastic fun! Also, what this shows is that head restraints are absolutely needed and the Hilux is not indestructible.
It happened so gradually, I barely noticed Fully Charged became Top Gear from 10 years ago 🤣 Not that I mind it, electric car shenanigans are tons of fun.
I remember leaving a farm shop in the mod 90s and Robert driving the other way in a lovely Land Rover (I think it was a truck). We saw Terry Nutkins walking about with a huge polystyrene box in a nearby village. What a holiday ☺️
The only comment i'd make is to both drivers to keep your thumbs from inside the spokes of the steering wheel. Keep your thumbs on the outside of the wheel. That way if you hit a rock and the wheel spins one way or the other, you get to keep your thumbs unbroken...

Fantastic fun, Robert, Jack, Landies and full on countryside, what could go wrong? Nothing, they're electric.... the diesel Toyota though... 🤔 says it all really 😂 I did find myself hearing my old dad, who would have turned a hundred on Wednesday, had he lived another fifteen years, tutting somewhat disapprovingly at the water approaches "do not go into water at speed, you don't know what's in there, could be a huge hole or insurmountable boulder." He never took a driving test (not required) but was an instructor in the RAF during the war. He got to drive and teach others to drive every type of vehicle - from motorcycles to lorries to steam rollers, in one of which he liked to proudly say he was the only chap to get a puncture! Went a bit too fast, split the roller! 😂 Had some fantastic tales of brake failure in a lorry down a mountain and he taught me everything he could from the age of about three when I was big enough to sit on his lap to steer and change gear with my hands resting on his. The lessons paid off, I became only the second female bus driver on London Transport out of Edmonton Tramway. My instructor paid me the highest complement on my first go: "oh good, you can steer..." yes, apparently its a thing, some people can't, who knew?! Anyway passed first time, gosh that was a long time ago, thanks for the memories chaps, one of your best videos. 👍 😁👏😊
The first time I was given a Landrover to drive I was told “you don’t steer it, you periodically adjust the direction it wants to go in”
This became apparently incredibly fast
We traveled over dried flood plains that had had buffalo on them all wet season. Once it dried, it was more comfortable to walk beside the Landy than drive it, sitting in it.
Land Rovers view steering wheel changes as "requests to be ignored" rather than firm instructions.
Split screen campers are also incredibly vague! Steering box hovers a few inches off the ground if lowered for extra white knuckles!
Certainly more environmentally friendly than the current trend of writing a car off after 10 years because it's financially unviable to repair!

Magnificent! Absolutely at 'big TV/streaming car show' level in every way. Cars, presenters and production, spot on. And a Spud too.
Wow, thank you!
Agreed. I had a huge smile on my face the whole time watching this. This is how you travel in style through nature. In an EV 4x4.
Spud enjoys the adventure too.
Well done gents. I used to be a full time Land Rover mechanic and wanted to turn them in to electric. especially the Series one and Series 2. Now you've gone and done it. Thank you for fulfilling my life long dream.
I am convinced, that this show will be the "template" or the reference-piece for all future automotive television. Excellent work!
Has to be one of your best videos ever, and I’ve been watching since the beginning. Great to see the crew in the camera car getting involved.
Absolutely seconded. This beats most Top Gear episodes by a mile…

The crew in the Hilux - I was crying with laughter every time they were shown being pinged about trying to film. Well done!
Thanks
It was great fun to film 🎥
@@andrewdavies328 Excellent - it looked a blast, and not just the moment the Truckman glass shattered! 😎
Shaken, not stirred
Which is why film crews who regularly film countryside stuff use Range Rovers or Disco 4s. 😉

That’s what a real Land Rover looks like
Kudos to the people behind camera. This was so entertaining! I was smiling through the whole thing :D
Seen this guy a few times now on various channels, what a character! Absolutely love his work also 🙌🏼
Yeah this Robert kid has potential I reckon

Thanks Peter. Means a lot
Nice to see the old Landy back on the road
It always surprises me that people lend their precious cars to idiots to drive for a show - and I'm always glad they did!
Sous, I would Die for you, because any comments help. There you go, thank you for what you do.
Jack's face of fear as he drives over the mountain.... priceless. 👍

My fav RUclips channel driving my favourite cars. Very enjoyable. Thanks to Richard and Spud for hosting.
Fun video. This channel has quickly become my new substitute for Top Gear.

Superb video gents!!
Awesome video. Never seen Robert laugh and smile so much. This is my favourite video on fully charged. 10/10
I like the 007 no time to die for Spud day out. Good work chap's

And we LOVE you for saying that!!!

What a brilliant video, haven’t laughed so much in ages. I think my old 110 station wagon would have loved this route. We’ll done all!!
SPUD - I would die for you. Very fun episode :)
Great piece - thanks
"Hi I'd like to be a cameraman for Fully Charged"
"What do you mean I need life insurance?"
It’s true 🎥😂
The two in the back of the Hilux were definitely shaken not stirred. :-)
Great to see these Landies being up-cycled 👍
Only the SlllA is being. ‘Up cycled’ That Spectre Defender is probably worth £40-50k as a standard vehicle.
Can't make it to the UK show, but I'll see you in San Diego.
Absolutely brilliant thank you
Excellent video! 👍👍
Good on ya Mate!

That short wheelbase Landy would have made it up that first track without batting an eyelid
Fully Charged need to get a show dog
I think we need a dog show… (!)
Lovely conversions the silence and peacefulness of the environment was just wonderful !! Just power and pull !!

I think Robert & Jack make a great duo for these head-to-head two vehicle comparisons. Top team. 👍
Brilliant episode. Richards great on camera.
This is superb. Next level RUclips production.
The Series 2A is gorgeous! That's the one I'd have
The only comment i'd make is to both drivers to keep your thumbs from inside the spokes of the steering wheel. Keep your thumbs on the outside of the wheel. That way if you hit a rock and the wheel spins one way or the other, you get to keep your thumbs unbroken...
Robert does actually mention this in the filming, but we had to cut it for time/momentum.
So awesome - used to drive a ‘57 in Botswana and I wish I could have that vehicle with one of these drive trains!
Great content see everyone at fully charged live!
Genuinely one of your best videos ever. This deserves 10x the views.
Cheers Dean. Was a blast to make

Blooming brilliant episode! The cars, the location, the crew oh and the two jammy gits who get to have that much fun and call it work. Awesome 👍❤️
