EV Land Rover Defender Road Trip

  • Welcome to The Late Brake Show. In this episode Jonny Smith has the task of driving an EV converted classic Land Rover Defender from rural Wales into central London, where it is put inside world-renown retail store Selfridges. This 'E-Lander' was a project vehicle build commissioned by Selfridge's themselves in conjunction with Barbour clothing company in order to raise the awareness of more sustainable shopping. Jonny made a previous video for the Selfridge's Project Earth campaign ( www.selfridges.com/GB/en/feat... ) and Barbour's fascinating ReLoved jacket restoration/upcycling programme ( www.barbour.com/uk/reloved ), but this is a 'director's cut' with more specific details on the Tesla EV running gear beneath this 2015 Defender.
    So called 'E-Lander' the car was built by Electric Classic Cars in Wales ( www.electricclassiccars.co.uk/ ) and modified specifically for the client to still perform off-road, as well as a town and country vehicle. The Tesla Model S large motor has been turned 90-degrees in order to power driveshafts to both front and rear, meaning it is a single motor 4x4, with enough power to keep up with an Aston Martin DBX or Mercedes G63 AMG SUV. At the same time it stealthily hides its lack of exhaust, long gearstick and engine, so unassuming eyes simply see it as an immaculately tailored Defender. Talking of tailoring, the interior was masterminded by Barbour, who supplied their classic tartan jacket lining, together with 'Vegan leather' for a soft, luxurious cabin.
    The result? A scenic road trip in a Defender that drives better than any diesel Defender Jonny has ever tried. Expensive, yes, but these cottage industry EV converted classics will certainly form a strong part of charismatic futuristic motoring.
    Stop. It's time for The Late Brake Show.

      @AdamJayPe 3 года назад +1

      Agree re. the production quality is as good as TV, but more importantly the content & presentation style is thankfully free from the pressures of the attention-grabbing TV style - what I'm trying to say is that shows like this far exceed anything I've seen on TV recently. Nice work, Jonny.

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 3 года назад +1

      @@AdamJayPe One of my absolute pet hates are captions you ought to read being plastered over video. They appear in this video on a yellow background. I was watching the video at the time, so didn't read any of them. They were an unwanted distraction.
      He mentioned no need for hi and lo ratios - so why were there labels for it in the vehicle ? He's just added mystery, unanswered questions - possibly failing to understand the vehicle.
      He also said the whine was a transmission whine, not the motor - well if that was the case, it was from the motor reduction gears, not the vehicle's transmission - you find a modern car - clutch down, engine off doing 50 mph (downhill!) won't whine like that ! They're silent - all you hear is tyre on road noise.
      Addendum: In fact, just sounds like an overgrown radio controlled car ! I'd guess for the same reason - straight cut spur gearing at the motor before it's reduced to engine speed and connected to the car's usual quiet transmission.

    For me, this is where electric vehicles excite me. Replacing classic vehicle powertrains with electric makes so much sense. I really want and original Fiat 500 with an electric powertrain and a singer’d out interior for nipping to the shops. I literally couldn’t care less about the 2000hp cars or the 0-60 times etc.

    This was so freaking cool, at first I thought the prospect of removing engines from old (older than this one) cars would be sad, but as long as we keep a few with their original engines this is actually so much more fun of a way to keep these old cars driving

    This is one of your best videos and made me really want an “e-rover”. It was the best of all worlds and I bet they could sell them as fast as they could make them. The styling and finish was very tasteful and the Barbour interior was classy. They should let Vera have one for her next series.
    I noticed that the vehicle had a tow bar but if it was going to be used a lot, a bigger battery would be good.

    Phenomenal camerawork and editing. I've been watching your channel since you left Fully Charged (which is a shame, you're such a good presenter and it's how I came about knowing you, but alas) and while your videos are always high-quality, this is just a cut above the rest (does anyone say that, anymore?).

    Totally - this is the way forward. If we want clean air to breath then ICE is going to have to go away. But if we want that to happen quickly we either have to scrap the entire ICE fleet before it's time at huge environmental cost for the scrappage or we can have a mass conversion program where only the drivetrains get scrapped and the rest of the vehicles get a second life as BEVs. Planning on doing this to my mk4 Transit and my Audi A2.

      @@dantevxv1501 Well to wheel, even electricity generated by coal is more efficient than millions of individual internal combustion engines. But the grid is getting less carbon intensive all the time. Renewables are the cheapest form of generation, hence that's what's being built these days. No-one is building new coal generating plants, because they require you to buy coal to operate while the wind and sun are free... It's really a no brainer. Sure, batteries need to be produced with an associated energy cost of production. But you only have to dig the materials for a battery out of the ground once, as opposed to continuously for the fuel going into an internal combustion engine.

      @@dantevxv1501 Batteries don't need replacing after four or five years, and wind turbines don't take more energy to create than they generate over their lifespan. Both of your statements are simply untrue. Edit: I misread your comment - after ten years, they may well be nearing the end of their useful life as a vehicle battery. But that's not the end of their usefulness. They can be and are being repurposed as stationary energy storage at the end of their life as vehicle batteries. Even after that, they contain all of the valuable raw materials required to make new batteries. Lead acid batteries are recycled now - what makes you think lithium Ion cells won't be to recover those materials?
