The World's Fastest Land Rover

- Our electric Land Rover has had a motor and controller upgrade. It's time to see what it can do, both on road and off road. We do a 0-60 mph test and take it into the hills of Wales to check that the off road ability of the Land Rover is still there. We also check that the regenerative braking effect of the electric motor is enough to act as a hill descent mode.
The Land Rover Defender is still 4 wheel drive, but now has a performance Tesla motor in it out of a Tesla Model S P100D, as well as the 100kWh battery pack out of the same Tesla. All the electrics are sealed so it can wade deeper than an ICE equivalent.
Is there a quicker 4x4 than this that can perform both on and off road?
BF Goodrich All Terrain tyres.
Ashcroft Transmissions upgraded half shafts, CV joints and limited slip diffs to cope with the instant torque of the electric motor.
Top Gear presenter, Paddy McGuinness, picked this Land Rover Defender as his favourite EV of 2022, and described it as "The most fun I’ve had in any car ever on Top Gear.".
Watching it again but never gets old . Happy new year everyone from Australia
Absolute perfection. Old school Landy. But it will need a roof and aircon for over here in Australia. Love it!
In the late 1970s I pulled sub-4 seconds in a Porsche 911 Turbo “Whale Tail” that cruised calmly at 150 mph down CA coastal highways at 1:00am when there was no other traffic. It had a “Champaign Gold paint job with black trim, Pirelli P7 tires, sheepskin sear covers, a Blaupunkt octo-phonic sound system, and an open “moon roof.” Now I got a BMW X3 for weekends, my daily “thrasher” is an old but indestructible Lincoln Towncar, and for farm work a beaten-up old Chevy Silverado truck. Times change… sigh.
This is the ONLY EV that is beyond appealing to me. I do not have words to convey how impressive all this is.
I love this channel.❤
Wow, thank you!
I'd rather have his VW ute myself :D
Very impressive .
Definitely need to revisit the 0-60 in the summer with road tyres......
Definitely going to do a follow up video in the summer, with road tyres on and a full battery. 😎👍
I think you should do a electronic ford escort rx3i that's my dream classic car would love to see a video of that car being done
5:40 Reaching for the gearstick? 😈 That muscle memory lingers!
Yep. I do that now again in my Beetle but I think that's the first time I've ever done it in my Landy. Muscle memory indeed. 😁👍
That is an awesome upgrade. I do think its time to get seats with headrests!
If i had a defender I know what i'd be doing!
A great video, some beautiful engineering on the mechanicals and electronics. The opening shot as you vanished from the screen reminded me of an expression used by that old famous Southern Rooster " AH! SAY SON, FORTUNATELY AH KEEP MY FEATHERS NUMBERED FOR JUST SUCH EMERGENCIES"
shocks , springs and tires every month ? 🤣Fantastic ! Love it !
Holy moly bonkers, amazing build!
Glad you like it!
You guys are absolutely out of your minds and I love you!!
Closest factory 4x4 that capable off road would be a G Wagon 4x4 squared 0-60 4.3
This man is a living legend!
I'm watching this late on a warm night in Australia in my boxer shorts and t-shirt. Love that machine and the sound it made as you pulled up.
Glad you enjoyed it
Well you found the holy Grail gentlemen - this is the best of the best - good for your team. That system you have now I would put in a few cars I want to change over. Will it still charge at a tesla charging station ? or not.....
Will be much better when you get rid of all that unsprung, Richard! 3.0, here we come!
I really need to come and work for you guys. Is £10 an hour OK? I know its not much, but its all I can afford to pay you.
I'll do it for free. (for a week, got to keep the old boring job to pay you for the conversion!)
I put diesel in my tank, it takes a few minutes. I can have my heaters on and stay warm. I can even put in vegetable oil and use that, and its 100% renewable. The 300TDi is just wonderful. Its a lot slower though, thats for sure, but I never built my Disco 130 for speed.
It takes about 5 seconds to plug in his Landrover when it charges when he’s not using it. Never has to go to a petrol station and wait again 😉 ruclips.net/video/V1eZxRpRVuE/видео.html
How are the Tesla motors and drivetrains obtained for the EV conversions? Are they available separately from Tesla or from salvaged Tesla vehicles?
10 seconds in and I was hooked. Hilarious
Ace!
I went one! Legend great engineering
Can't wait to see it in the snow !!!
We'll be putting up a short of it in the snow in the coming days. 😁👍
Very impressive- actually that’s insane … I love it
That vid was mindblowing
But I’ll not stop begging you to convert a Suzuki jimny cuz it make 1-60 in 3.6 months
Jimnys are cool. 😎👍
This is great! Please sell it to the ‘people’!
That put a smile on your face! like the XC40 but off road capable!!
I love what you guys can do, but to see your face, eyes wide open in sheer overwhelmed surprise on the edge of panic, and the Landy looking like another driver would have flipped it already, makes me hope you have a "valet parking" knob somewere hidden . No effence ment.. you do brilliant!
Yep, it has 3 modes, with which you can restrict the power. 😁👍
Great job. Have you ever thought of building an ev Unimog > unimimoggy for your backyard 😅
Unimoggy 😂🤣😁👍
You now have land rover plaid 😂😂 I hope the chassis is up to the task. I thought I saw it flex when you pull off.
Does it go as fast backwards as forwards?
At least the heater works like the original. 😂😂😂😂 It is a beast and I love it.
Magnificent
Lamborghini Urus has a 0-60 time of 3.6, probably not as capable off road though. I was looking up the LM002 0-60 time when I found that. Keep up the great videos. Entertaining and informative, as usual!
I love the upgrade, but time to put a serious roll bar in and replace those squab seats also, for head support or you or a passenger might get neck issues.
Awesome. You can see the car pull down on the right rear side when you accelerate, because you are still using the original axles.
Most fast EVs just have the motor in the axle and don't have that anymore, this is like a musle car at a dragstrip!
I must say, I doubt how good it is for the axles and the chassis/body if you were doing this everyday. It is not built for this.
But every once in a while shaming a Porsche at the traffic light should be fine :D
You are MAD! 🤣 If not prepared for it, you'll give any passenger a whiplash upon takeoff! At least install seats with a headrest! The fastest Land Rover Defender I've managed to find online is 4,4 seconds 0 to 60... This is so crazy it's starting to make sense...
That is simply awesome, especially turning the Tesla drive unit to use it as a powered transfer case.
I realize that you did not make the Rover for highway use, but indulge me in a hypothetical: You seem to be visibly shaken every time you launch it for a 3.67 sec 0-60. If 0-60 in 6-7 seconds was perfectly acceptable and the gearings to make the Tesla drive output in a taller range (like 3.5-4:1), would taller gears increase the overall range, or is it a zero-sum situation and the range is the same regardless of the gearing?
Great build, as always, and thanks for continuing to improve it to show us the latest tech.
This is amazing. Have you thought about electrifying a Unimog ? That would be EPIC,
That would be a beast. 😁👍
Just need a lottery win, and I’ll be knocking on your door Moggy. I’ve tried to find another word instead of insane but I can’t !!!
Due to riding an e-scooter in the winter I've developed and built myself a heater that clips inside of my t-shirt and runs off of modified old cell phone battery packs. You can also run it off of the 12v system of your EV for even warmer results. Probably would help Tim withstand the cold.
@@spudproductions7606 It's strange in 2023 nobody has made a commercial version of that. I guess they just expect everyone to stay inside their warm vehicles so no need
@@beinghappy1312 I see heated gilets & waistcoats on Amazon all the time.
@@beinghappy1312 There were commercial versions of electrically heated suits for high speed motorcycles in Japan designed years/decades ago. Those included even heating for helmet. I never heard about those getting any market traction outside Japan though.
I just strap a blow torch to my handle bars on my ebike, nice n toasty lol
@@nevco8774 Actually my brother has a heated jacket or waistcoat that he wears under his bike jacket when out on his motorbike, so there must be something out there commercially.
Thanks. Well done. Great vid. You are a true rev-head ..Jim Bell (Australia)
Glad you enjoyed it
Boy I wished you guys lived close to me, I'd have you build something for me. Awesome Land Rover and put together by professionals!
They probably can, they have a defender kit which they make available to conversion companies around the world. Chances are there is one in your country. First one I ever came across was in the pre kit days where a Safari vehicle conversion company in South Africa was sourcing the parts from them
Absobloodylutely fantastic. Why the hell can't Landrover do what you are doing, but on their assembly line? It would quite simply be a world beater.
An electric L663 is on the way, but it will never be as much fun as this one. Just seen it on Top Gear, wasted a Porsche 911 in a standing start drag race. Would be great fun to drive around the city, surprise a few people ! As it looks completely standard
Because tesla doesnt sell their parts to third parties and likely never will. They only use salvage parts, which are not available in high quantities
That needs better seats with head restraints.
Keep up the awesome and slightly crazy stuff
GREAT!! 👏👏👏😁😁😁 Why cannot car manufacturers offer a competent electric vehicle without complicated software? Something like your creations, but from the factory 👍👍👍
Good question!
Spectacular!!!
Glad you have a roll cage!
Simply marvelous. I love that Land Rover. The color. The year style and that it’s electric. I hope you warmed up. Cheers
@@spudproductions7606 I once rode a motorcycle from Philadelphia pa to a seaside heights Nj with a friend on his bike. A ride of about 70 miles(112 kilometers). Down and back same day or rather night. We left seaside heights about 9 pm. The temp was around low 40’s (4 c )but was colder as drive went on. No fairing and we we drove to his house we arrived back in Philadelphia around midnight as we stopped at a bar mid way to get coffee. I hate coffee. When we got. Inside at his house , he crashed on the couch and I on a cushie chair. As I sat down I said to Ralph my knees are cold. Early next morning his father( sgt in Phila PD) came downstairs and just looked at the two of us. My knees were still COLD.
@@bruceyoung1343 😅😅😅😅 I fully understand what you felt, having used my motorcycle every winter from 1982 😁😁
@@deltajohnny when I was in HS and rode. I would ride in just about every weather except freezing rain and heavy snow
@@bruceyoung1343 Yes, these people that put their motorcycles in storage when the weather is not perfect wouldn't understand us 😅😅😂😂
@@deltajohnny no that wouldn’t. They not a real rider.
EVs are extremely off-road capable. My e-scooter which isn't designed for off-roading goes off-roading extremely well. Lots of torque, a decent amount of weight and super precise throttle control.
Totally agree
My ebike is crap off road, bounces about over bumps, got no grip from the road tyres, best to avoid of road or just go really slowly, it was much better off road before I converted it to electric, better on road though lol
That intro! Wow
More like. That intro, ow.... My neck. 😆😁👍
Your a genius
Thanks. 😁👍
Is the new CAM based controller an inhouse development or is it available on the market ???
Amazing love it is it free to Tax now? have you got a price for the conversion
WOW WOW WOW what a land rover 👏 its crazy 🤪 brilliant.
half-shafts & drivetrain component life?
Upgraded Ashcroft transmissions components. So far after 2 years of regular abuse they're still fine. Big respect to Ashcroft transmissions quality parts to be able to stand up to my abuse like that. 👍
@@ElectricClassicCars Excellent, appreciate the rely.
Thank you
Mate your a brilliant man😎👍👍
Thanks 👍
Did I heard a WHISPER, JerryRigEverithing?
Amazing speed👍👍👍👍👍.
Absolutely love this car!!
This is pure insanity!👌
Would love to have a kit for my Disco 2
Superb!
One of the temptations for going electric (the OEM cars are dull AF, but they'll make good donors for cool classics.....)
Couple of things -
Was that you going for 2nd gear? 🙄🤣 (when I jump into a left hooker, I smack the door card with my hand...🤦♂️)
I presumed the aftermarket controllers could be infinitely controlled so could be set up as per OEM?
Trying to get my head around the motor set up, you have a DC motor, position encoder , with an inverter control? (Similar to a sensored brushless rc motor?). Does that mean you can control motor timing (boost & turbo timing), to give a 'Vtec' effect? (Increase rpm ,but at the expense of heat and efficiency).
Yep, I really did just go for a gear shift. Muscle memory. 😁👍 After 7 years of driving EVs you would have thought I'd got that out of my system by now, but apparently not. 😆🤣😂
@@ElectricClassicCars doh!! 🤦♂️🤣
the first few seconds of the vid scared the life out of me ..😁
Now you know how I felt behind the steering wheel. 😆😁👍
Super cool!
I don't understand why the stock controller should have more power.
The (I suppose OpenInverter) can drive the Motor and the IGBT out of spec.
How much is this kit? Where can I find a price for my conversion?
3.67 seconds 0 to 60 on something as aerodynamic as a breeze block? Impressive
Probably the most reliable too.
It’s a keeper! Probably the only reliable Land Rover out there.
Isn’t the Rivian 0-60 time faster? About 3.3 for that on paper I think
It's about time someone started checking the power that people are putting through a chassis that can't safely handle it before someone is killed
Wow you really have the best Land Rover in in in in in in the world ❤
0:45 It is
How can I get a kit for 90defender in Tobago?
When you said, "That was over quick", did you briefly contemplate whether to say, "... said the actress to the bishop" (or some such)? It looked like it!
You read my mind. 😆😁👍
So, what is the 60 -> 0 time using regen alone?
Ffffffck, that’s quick. Nice to see you keep making the cars better. Two questions though; what’s the 0-62 (0-100km/h) on this? The proper metric to see how fast a car really is 😉. And can we expect a video on the bonkers looking tesla powered baja Beetle soon?
0-100km/h is 3.7 seconds. Baja episode is in the can and will be released as soon as we can. 😎😎
AWESOME CAR! That hill descent mode must harvest a lot of power?
That's a great idea for an episode. Measure the energy to get to the top of the hill and how much goes back in on the way back down. 👍👍👍
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 OMG Richard that start is insanely epic!!! 00:02
@@spudproductions7606 Please bring it back during the summer with road tires. We gotta take real clocking on this insane beast!!
@@spudproductions7606 I am on it!!! Most appreciated!!!😀
Impressive!
What are the costs and how is the weight?
And: really not even seatbelts?
That looks side shaft snapping quick.
Awesome content as always
Thanks. Glad you're enjoying the content. 😁👍
Beautiful conversion! How does it compare to a Rivian?
Good question! There'll be an episode on that soon. 😎👍
@@ElectricClassicCars love it! cannot wait!
Really looked like you reached for the gear knob to change up on that 0-60?
Very cool ❤
Hello, amigo, que máximo esse land.
Not a Tesla fan here, but would love to see u guys do a prius! 😂🤣🤓🇺🇸
The Prius is a terrible car, not even a Tesla drive unit would fix that!
It's quicker than sound, it left the frame before we heard the sound.
And here we see one of the drawbacks of electric cars, no massive amount of waste heat we can blow in our face in the winter time. With a IC engine we can waste as much heat as we want at heating the driver and the cab, it's just waste heat any way. With electric cars we need some kind of heater and using it will cost range.
Resistive heating is actually very efficient at or as close to 100% efficiency that the difference doesn't really matter. But it still is costly when it takes power that could otherwise have been used to move the car. Using a heat pump the heating can be a lot more efficient, and yes that means you get more than 100% back. Only it's heat and there's no way to convert that back to any other form of energy that isn't so ineffective that this doesn't break the laws of physics. So no perpetual motion machine here! Still if you need heating in your electric car it better use a heat pump to do it.
My Landy uses the tried and tested AND cheap method of 'hat & gloves'. 😜😆👍
It was frightening to even watch! I’m watching this in Hawai’i, and that Welsh weather is freezing my blood,😂😅! Hope you’re thawed out by now! Aloha.
The last few days we've had snow and I've been driving it each day. It's all about wearing the appropriate clothing. Watch out for a short we'll be dropping in the coming days with our adventures in snow. 😉👍
Das ist der nackte Wahnsinn 👍👍
Don’t even think of taking it to Santa Pod! All of the dragster owners would go home suffering from severe depression ha ha!
We are sooooo going to go there in the summer. 😁👍
She is a beauty 😊
If the conversation where not so fu… 😜… crazy expensive… I would do it 👍
Did you have to switch the phase leads as motor orientation causes Fwd and Reverse to be opposite of stock config?
LOVE it!
I wish you made a kit toconvert my Volvo XC70 (2006) to a "Tesla" :-)
Same here with my ‘07 Disco which the engine has just died on, but too modern for them (and couldn’t be legally reclassified as electric anyway thanks to DVLA rules)
What tyres do you have, to cope with that sort of power?
BF Goodrich All Terrains.👍
