Hello friends!
I recently got back from spending a few days in Portland, Oregon and finally got to experience my dream of visiting Powell's City of Books. It's the largest independent bookstore in the world and it truly made all my bookish dreams come true, so I hope you enjoy this book shopping vlog and book haul :) I could have spent days in that bookstore. We actually meant to film another video of our trip to Oregon, but my health took a little plunge again so sadly this will be the only video from my this trip. But I'm hoping to go back to Oregon again later this summer :) There was so much to see and do, it's such a beautiful state! I know it's not Washington but it did give me all the Twilight vibes. It was magical and being there made my heart so happy 😊

Hello, i'm 16 and got diagnosed with dyslexia at 12. Reading has always been hard for me. But I watched this video recently. I have never thought about reading being fun. It was always just to read a text book for school. But I thank you for shedding a new light for reading to me. I have an audio book account and i'm starting to read for fun for the first time. i'm reading to all the boys I've loved before and next I plane to read Anne of green gable. once again I want to thank you.
Hey :) there are tons of fonts you can use to make reading easier, especially if you can use a e-reader like kindle, or just reading on your phone ^^ (I mostly use Open Dyslexic)

I've always wanted to visit Powell's, and when a co-worker visited your store while on a trip to Portland a few years ago, I gave him money to get me a Powell's tote bag. Living vicariously through Desi, I got to truly experience how much of a book lover's paradise Powell's is. I could easily plan an entire trip around multiple visits to your store, with each day spent exploring a different section. THAT would be a dream vacation! 🙂
I teared up a little when Jared said "run free, Desiree!" 🥺 I live very close to Powell's and definitely have to limit my visits 😅
It would definitely be dangerous if I lived too close 🫣 Even with all the books I got, I put back at least 5-7 in the end 😂

Back when I was a kid I wanted to go on a 'shopping spree' for Christmas. My mom got me a $100 gift certificate for our local mall. I thought I was the richest girl in the world. I blew the entire amount at Waldenbooks buying up the _Sweet Valley Twins_ series. On my Sumner vacations from grade school I used to read the Nancy Drew mystery books and willingly write book reports about them. As a kid I also liked to write to my favorite authors and tell them how how much I enjoyed their stories. A few even wrote back. I remember that the letters from LJ Smith, the author of the 'vampire diaries' series were on such beautiful stationery. She wrote me multiple times in junior high & I was so excited and happy; she was such a kind lady. I guess I've always been a reading nerd! Powell's looks like paradise! And how do people *not* watch to the end of your videos?! You don't have a single second of dull content.... ever!
I live less than two hours from Powel's and have made it a tradition to go for my birthday with my dad. He gives me 50-100 dollars to spend, and we spend hours trying to pick which few books to choose, and just looking at the insane amount of books there are. We also go to the little coffee shop that is INSIDE the bookstore and sit and read :)

I also find it amusing to give the most ambiguous descriptions of things possible, so when people ask what it’s about, I say “Hypocrisy.” 😂

Seeing that edition of Return of the King brings back so many memories! My Dad read me The Hobbit and LOTR as my bedtime stories, and every time we finished a book we would go together to store and pick up the next book. Well, by the time we made it to the Return of the King, they'd switched the covers! We were so disappointed that the final book didn't match. At least now I get to see what it would have looked like!

I'm so glad you picked up The Tasha Tudor Cookbook!! I was going to recommend it on one of your previous videos. It is a book I've loved for years! I actually have both editions of it, the vintage version that you now own and the updated/revised edition. The vintage one has a bunch more recipes and illustrations in it and reads more like a cozy story where you've been invited to sit down with Tasha Tudor for tea and a chat. Whereas the newer one has fewer recipes and less stories/illustrations but it has actual photographs of the different foods and more "modernized" recipes.
I HIGHLY recommend the gingerbread recipe in this cookbook though! It is so incredibly delicious. I love to bake it and then eat it warm with some butter. It is so autumnal and amazing! And at some point I want to try to make the toffee recipe because it sounds so old-fashioned and like it would be such fun to make. 🥰

Question for Desi and everyone else, roughly what percentage of your books have you actually read? I’m hoping this makes me feel better about my massive book hoarding because I’ve only read about 1/3 of the books I own and I just keep buying more.
I’ve probably read just over half the books that I own 🤔 Maybe a little more? I don’t mind having so many books because my dream is to have a library room in my house someday! So telling myself that when I buy more books makes me feel less bad about acquiring more 😄

My grandma would be greatly disappointed in me if I did not inform you that you need to check the chapter count for any Nancy Drew book you pick up. They edited the stories down to 20 chapters; originally they had 25. She reminds me of that every time Nancy Drew comes up in conversation, which is more often than you'd think. She's quite passionate.

I really loved Emily of New Moon; Emily just reminded me of a more introverted Anne. When I was growing up there was an Emily of New Moon tv show but it deviated a lot from the books and I didn't care for it as much.
I just love books My dad said on my birthday (september 8 ) we are going to a bookstore since i just love books. for my birthday i wanted a wii and and to go to a play zone but I just think books are better we are going to the bookstore when its my birthday (sunday and my dad gets paid on saturday so this will mean the world to me and keep up the good videos! 😊

I am so glad I just found you!! I have been reading A LOT lately and am discovering an amazing world of book tubers. Last month was an all time high for me of 11 books and 2 of them were s tier: Book Lovers by Emily Henry and A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman; 5 of them were 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ books: Beach Read by Emily Henry, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano, It Happened One Summer By Tessa Bailey, Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, and Seven Days in June by Tia Williams; 3 of them were high 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️s: Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead by Elle Cosimano, I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys, and Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid; and the 11th book which was a 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️was Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover because I don’t understand degrading, abusive sexual relationships for no reason between young, attractive healthy people who don’t need to be in that relationship or even start that relationship. I don’t like the characters and they don’t make sense to me.

I have Kinsella’s I Owe You One on audio and I’m halfway through it and I just received the ebook of the Party CRASHER and then I think I’ve read all of her books. Her favorite author is Agatha Christie so I just also picked up And Then There Were None. I adore The Secret Garden and Anne of Green Gables and all of L. M. Montgomery and Little Women and Winnie the Pooh and Trixie Beldan. You were speaking my language!’ You we’re connecting to my heart!!! I so enjoyed this trip to that amazing book store!! I get it! I get it all!!!

Oh my gosh, this video reminds me of going to The Strand in NYC with my Dad!! He sells used and rare books so, it was an all day trip for us too! I'm secretly hoping to inherit his first edition of Hounds of the Baskervilles, because it's beautiful and I always try to hold it when we go to my parent's house! He actually specializes in Mysteries and has a lot of Agatha Christie - he had found TWO First Editions of 'A Mysterious Affair at Styles' and it's pretty rare to begin with, so finding two was nuts! Thanks for this whole video, I got a serotonin high just watching!
