      I'm right there with ya! Gotta an 84 3/4 ton p/u with the 318 bullet proof motor that I'm trying to refurbish. The guts seem to be pretty tight but all the appendages, e.g... the 4 pumps that circulate an engines life sustaining fluids (gas water, oils), have been leaking on the components made with rubber, seals, and gaskets for at least 25 years! What a mess! I'm hoping yer LOL means lots of luck; because I'm not laughing a lot right now covered from head to toe in nasty old grease! It'll be great when I Get -R- Dun and back on the road Ha!

    You can also use laundry line rope about 25' with the piston down halfway fill the cylinder through the spark plug hole then turn crank to hold the valve caution it will lock because you filled the combustion chamber with the string. With air it is possible to still drop the valve.

    Great video. In your opinion, why do these valve springs break? I drive a 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8. I bought it in March 2016. The car has less than 36k miles. It's very upsetting to have to deal with this already. I didn't know it was the valve spring initially so I changed the spark plugs along with the two oxygen sensors and cylinder 5 kept misfiring. The only hesitation I have to do this concerns rotating the engine to TDC in relation to cylinder 5 and the reasoning behind putting certain about of air in the cylinder. I'm seriously thinking of trading this car. Also, did you remove any fuses related to fuel pressure and starting when doing this job? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    • @mediajunkie2195
      @mediajunkie2195  7 лет назад +1

      All springs can break regards of the application. i.e.suspension, engine, or other.... Final heat treating during manufacturing process may contribute. I do agree that it seems new style HEMIs single spring design are more prone to breakage though. Have you pulled the valve covers yet for inspection?
      No fuel pressure fuses pulled.Just battery ground cable. String in cylinder is another good option for holding valves against the seat to change springs. I like air method better cause I can tell if I have proper tooling alignment to avoid bending valves during compression. It's really not that hard of a job. I still find it hard to believe spring breakage at 36K miles though. Remove valve cover for inspection as your very next step..... I'll PM you with my contact info.

    • @ahmedsaidu-kamara6760
      @ahmedsaidu-kamara6760 7 лет назад

      Another possibility for the misfire on cylinder 5 on my car (2012 Dodge Charger SRT8) could be that the valve seat dropped and the piston hammered it. This is probably more likely than the spring breaking. This also is a common problem on the Hemi engines. This is probably the last dodge I'm going to own. I live near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you know any mechanic or a DIY who can do this in one day, we can work on the cost. I'm mechanically inclined but I'm not that comfortable in doing this job. Please send me your contact information when you can, thanks.

    • @mediajunkie2195

      Dropped valve seats were very common on the early truck HEMI's like mine. I have yet to experience this as mine has never overheated. My machine shop guy tells me dropped valve seats can happen on any aluminum head engines but especially ones that have suffered overheats. Aluminum heads keep him in business.

      40 PSI in the cylinder is used to keep valves tight against their seats. Other wise valves can drop down which you don't want.

      Absolutely remove the valve cover and 8 of the spark plugs. Not hard at all. This way you find a broken spring or worse you haven't spent any money. Remember, Dropped valve seats are also very common on early HEMI's. You can use a harbor freight borescope to identify if you have a good engine or not. Inspect the springs and if one is broken you can use rope to hold valves in place. Google it. Good luck

    Good video! I have a 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 5.7 Hemi. Engine shuts down on the road. Couldn't start anymore. If I keep gas pedal down, it would kind of run but very rough and once I let my foot go, it dies. So I opened the valve cover on both sides but didn't see any broken springs. • @mediajunkie2195
      @mediajunkie2195  7 лет назад

      Hard to say but I would ensure you have a good engine first. Run a compression test. If compression test is good you might want to look inside of cylinders with a bore-scope. Common to 2003's are valve seats dropping. Hopefully for your sake its something simple. Also run a fuel pressure test. How many miles? Any codes stored in eco? Timing chain jumped?

    • @yxie97
      @yxie97 7 лет назад

      It has about 160k miles. I did fuel pressure and seems that it has around 45 psi. Before it died, occasionally the fuel gauge would drop to zero (empty) but it never caused any issue. Yet to do compression test and other things you suggested. Thanks for your reply!

    • @yxie97

      It has a P0441. How do I do compression Test in its current state? Should I can go ahead and replace the springs? They look fine so I'm not sure if it'll make any difference. Either way, after I put everything back together, i can't get the car running to do compression Test, can I?

    • @mediajunkie2195
      @mediajunkie2195  7 лет назад

      Yes you can do the compression test in current state. In-Fact I recommend it. See video on my Son's truck. In the beginning I perform the test. ruclips.net/video/bkJIrHp83S4/видео.html. For the HEMI simply pull one spark plug per cylinder. Run the compression test and visually watch the valves move up and down while performing. With the valve covers off your able to check for things like sticking valves, broken springs, Broken rocker arms etc. All while performing the compression test. Remember to continue to spin engine with starter until compression tester quits climbing for each and every cylinder. Once your convinced your engine is repairable I would question your P0441 Emission OBD code. It could be as simple as a stuck evaprotive control solenoid in the open position. Look up fuel trim videos and how to troubleshoot like problems such as yours using a live monitoring tool. But still do the compression test just so you know your engine is good or bad before wasting to much time on anything else. Good luck

      Ninja Man sorry to hear. Were they specific such as dropped valve seat? Or perhaps a broken valve spring such as this video demonstrates?
      2006 was a good year for Dodge Rams. However If your engine has dropped a valve seat things can get real ugly real quick. Have they Borescope inspected each cylinder to ensure it’s fixable? Nothing worse than a bill from a shop and a trashed engine.

      My HEMI didn't have an EGR Valve. Maybe cause its a 2500 with manual trans.

      My understanding all vehicles made from around the mid 90's have an EGR system of some sort.

      Keven, My EGR valve is closed (on purpose) so no exhaust gas enters the combustion process, just fresh air.
