You should never unplug any electronic device for a good 10 seconds after shutdown. A lot of devices have fans that run until the units are completely cooled and unplugging it will cause the fan to stop the cooling process… especially true for toaster ovens!
You can buy external fans as well, and plug the fan into a wall outlet and the fan will suck the hot air out faster and keep your series S alive so much longer.
I tried external fans for my series x, it works but only for the first 30min because it doesn’t spin ass fast as the default fan, so when the Xbox is running a hard game the default fan will start to spin faster then the external fan so at that point the external fan will be holding it back
Can’t believe someone even thought that it can’t play AAA titles 😂 it’s been designed to play everything the series x can, also people don’t cover up the exhaust area which looks like a big speaker yes the console gets hot would be weird if it stayed cool 😂
@Michel Darwin games will be able to run on a series s till the next Xbox is released, games will be optimised for it,my one x is still going strong I see no point upgrading just yet even tho we have a series x already
@Michel Darwin I get what your saying bud but then again it is a 1080p machine not a 4K so at 1080p 60 it could probably hold up for 5 or more years, for what it is and how cheap and available they are there a great console but deffo not next gen
@Michel Darwin it’s advertised as a 1440p console but mostly hits 1080p at 60 and 1440p at 30fps,no one knows what’s coming from Microsoft in the next 5 years but I highly doubt they would make a console which can’t hang in a few years time,I’m still waiting for actually next gen games but till then I guess we gotta settle for what we have
When people think a weaker system is gonna run like the series x just at a lower resolution I laugh if you know anything about hardware you know it's better to just spend the extra 150 dollars 150 dollars isn't anything if you don't have 150 extra right now but you have enough for an s then just save up a bit more not worth going for the s even if you don't have a 4k it's allways best to spend a little more now and get quality then spend wven mote later having to upgrade and buy a whole new system
Even when I bought my 2TB SSD I made sure it was certified by Xbox. I’m aware of how tricky these things can be. I’m sorry about your Series S. :( hopefully you get it fixed or get a new one soon. I love your content. It made me feel better about my choice to get a series S, instead of a series X. Keep up the good work. :)
The series S is awesome, the value and quality is just amazing, when playing from a distance there is almost no difference to the big consoles, anyway the series x is more powerful and everyone who wants the the extra power for the little difference in performance and look of the games has my sympathy. But the series s holds up way more at the end of the day when it comes to just enjoy the games with friends or alone in a gaming setting. It fits everywhere, living room, at garden party’s with a projector, in the bedroom, or or or. Series s is the value pack and the x is the high end pack. Most of my friends don’t even understand the high end quality and would not notice if they’d play on a series s, but they need the stats. And that’s ok. But in my opinion the series s is the real masterpiece and winner of this generation. Besides Nintendo but they are in their own planet.
@Gold Eddie 23 lol. It will make up in price difference when you don't have to purchase every game through the Microsoft store. Ebay gamefly rentals, trade your games and not paying full price for games when buying disk at half or more then the original sticker.
Every ssd I’ve plugged into my series x has worked flawlessly. Silicon power, lexar, Samsung. None have had any issues - one is formatted for Xbox and one is formatted as ntfs so I can transfer things between the pc and Xbox
1downside to the series s is they charge more for digital downloads. A Hard disk can be on sale or being sold for 1 price but the digital version is higher for sum reason. I have both consoles and have seen this many times.
Thank you for clear and concise information. I confess I started gaming just a few short years ago when my daughters friend gave me his old Xbox 360 and a stack of games. I recently bought an Xbox S you helped greatly in my decision to do so! Thanks again!
if you plugged it directly into the wall there is a good chance that a brown out or black out (e.g. a power surge) from the grid is what killed your xbox, not the peripherals. A good quality surge protector from a reputable company is a great way to prevent power surges from zapping your console to death. that being said i agree with the idea of limiting peripheral usage for example get a monitor that uses its own external power cord to power itself and use a external hard drive with its own dedicated power cord is a good idea because There is a good chance Microsoft didn't test the new xbox with power-drawing peripherals that use lots of energy that might cause a problem on some models better not to find out the hard way which one it is. Treat your xbox gently
Which is why I have a rigid surge protector mounted to the bottom of my desk. Only thing plugged directly into the wall is my rgb setup and my surge protector. Monitor. System. Router. And miscellaneous other things all get plugged into the surge. Never lost a console and I've never plugged one straight into a wall from ps2 to 360 to one to my s.
That would be a very rare occurrence that this happens and severely damages your Xbox. Drawing heavy power from your console is more likely than a surge.
My only gripe with the Series S is that fan under the black vent doesn't seem to spin fast enough to vent the hot air fast enough. It's like this on all the Series S consoles I have seen. That fan acts like a 900rpm non-PWM fan. Doesn't move enough air.
I did my research prior to buying and I'm so glad I did. Coming from a Xbox 360 that I've had for a little over 10 years, and I'm happy to have gone with the Xbox Series S. In addition, great tips!
Airflow was probably the main problem. Many people think that the console is able to breathe in a tight space. I've seen countless amounts of people place their consoles in tight spaces without any airflow and they wonder why their console doesn;t last that long of their fans are ramping up.
You probably had a monitor that went over the recommended max for power draw from the USB port. I think for the Xbox it’s like 4.5 W/5V at 900MAH. Your monitor was probably pulling more than that and overheated/blew a fuse/burned out the contacts on that USB port, sending a signal to the power supply, saying it needs to shutdown to protect itself.
No my friend. The problem was not drawing to much power from the series S.. If you used a simple hdmi cable to the laptop not a problem.... You used USB... USB output roughly 5v.. You were pushing voltage ⚡ into the series S. That's what fried it. You had the 3rd party out putting roughly 5v. Your series S was outputting 5v... Both devices sending voltage ⚡ into each other. Unfortunately the series S lost the fight... RUclips the coder. He will fix it. A mobile phone takes power. It doesn't output power. So charging with USB is OK. Cool. You connected two devices outputting voltage!!
If you think your series S died because of powering external devices directly from it, then the console has indeed design issues. Driving or powering anything, regardless of how much power it draws, should not cause any problems, because modern electronics detect such cases and simply don't allow it. The external device should not start.
I dont understand why anyone would think its a good idea to power anything else with their xbox other then a external ssd. Specially something like a monitor. I mean is it really that hard to just plug the monitor into the wall? Or am i completely miss understanding what he said and what you are saying. Like are you guys saying to use a series s to power a microwave? 🤔
I just think the series s has a problem with any power I used a wired controller by Xbox the next day leaving it in and by by series s nothing else was connected
@@frozen_potato6957 you can use a monitor. the problem is that some people try to power the monitor with their series S. so instead of putting the monitors power cable into the wall outlet they tried to power the monitor with their xbox. 🤦♀️
I 100% agree that the Series S is an incredible console! In fact, if it came with a disk drive I would probably go as far to say that it is the best console ever made. Sure it doesn't reach the resolutions of it's big brother, but on a 1440p screen it looks amazing! And even the upscaled 4K ( Which I play it on ) looks great! Yes it doesn't have a disk drive, yes it isn't as powerful as the Series X or PS5 but, The small sleek design, virtual silence and faster SSD speed then the Series S & PS5 make it a fantastic console for the price. P.S I highly suggest getting the 1TB version over the 512GB. In my country there is literally only a $50 difference between the two, and the 1TB is black which I personally think looks far better.
love this video !!! , i have owned my series s since release and i wiped it down often but one thing i recommend!!! highly recommend taking the shell of the console , they clog up really bad from the intake vents and after a 30 min take apart cleaning all the boards and removing all the dust it stopped it from overheating and went back to silence. overwise they will drone and could do serious damage to the console!!!
You need to leave the system plugged in after it's fully shut down. The fan will keep spinning, this is probably for a good reason. I took this system to my buddy, almost on a weekly bases for over a year now. Before you put it in the backpack, just make sure not to unplug until the fan stopped running. I think that's safe :)
If you do a “Full Shutdown” under Settings, it will completely power off. I wish Microsoft had been a little clearer on this and made this an option in the basic Xbox button menu.
I’m curious with the monitor thing. One, where do you plug it into the Series S to power it up? And two, that is probably what happened. If you had one of those like 120hz, 4k, 60 fps high fidelity type monitors, those need a lot of power. Just curious because unless you’re out in the woods or something, definitely plug that into a regular outlet. Interesting 🤔
Literally watching this on my series s at my desk with an apex pro tkl and a rival 3 mouse hooked up to it. It’s been like that for around a year and doesn’t cause any problems. Gets a little hot when I play halo at 120fps
2:08 I have my series S standing on my desk and I’d had drink next to it WITH ICE and after a little gaming my drinks would be room temperature if not warm
Just bought a Series S. Your personal experience based tips are rare and spot on. I think this 3rd party power issue killed my Xbox one. Do you recommendsurge protected power strips for consoles?
Thanx for the tips. I have one which I bought last year still in my closet to give to my son on his birthday to upgrade from his Xbox One. I played around with it when I first bought it. Love the nvme drive in it. Thing is super fast compared to a hard drive. :)
Not everyone can just go to a store and buy another Series S for $300 or whatever. Good video though, I agree with the peripherals thing definitely! You never know when something that you thought was a steal could do to your system. I think the Storage card expansion for $130 is over priced for only 500GB, right next to it is a Seagate 1TB SSD for Series S/X at my local Walmart for $85. That's a no brainer if you want more storage.
Yeah, I just found his decisions to be very stupid and uneducated. The biggest mistake he made however was listening to advice from randoms on the internet. 🤦🏻♂️ I'd never.
Just Subscribed. Love my Series S, I think using a surge protector may also help, I had one of my Pioneer Laser Disc unplugged from surge protector and directly plugged into the wall, and a surge broke the laser disc, so I've since learned to only plug into surge protector, which sometimes stops some consoles like Wii U consoles to work sometimes, but it'll protect your console from any power surges. Great advice about third party external drives, I ended up buying the SeaGate Expansion Card for my Series S even though it's a lot more expensive compared to regular external harddrives.
I’m 99% positive that none of the things you mentioned caused you series s to not work. With things like power draw and how power is distributed to and from a video game console it has many safe guards that protect it from push to much power out and pulling in. What probably happened is a power surge from home to console. Even when using a surge protector you can still get enough of a surge to damage the stuff plugged into it. I can’t be 100% sure of that without taking it apart myself but I’d be willing to bet it’s as simple as replacing power supply or even the cmos battery.
The Xbox has an internal surge protector so I wouldn’t recommend plugging into another surge protector. I have seen One S consoles shorted out like that before.
@@Luke-cp9cb i litteraly just fixed xbox today cause it was plugged in the wall there was a 2 minute thunder storm and boom pop pop xbox shut down and wouldnt turn on. I replaced the power supply inside of it and it now works other one was fried power surge.
@@Luke-cp9cb on the new series S/X too? Ive had my Xbox one S and Series X plugged into a quality brand name surge protector since they were each new. How could having an extra surge protector inline of the power cause a short somewhere? Maybe if your house is older and doesn't have true grounds all the way back to the panel and ground rod. Most older houses only have the Feed(Blk) & the Nuetral(wht). Sometimes people will make a ground jumper from the outlet to the metal box. But if the box isnt bonded/grounded all the way back it doesn't mean anything.. Also all new construction for the past 10 or so years now in the USA, every bedroom has to have an AFCI Breaker feeding it. So in a way thats another device for monitoring the power and ground for shorts or interruptions inline with the power feed to the Xbox, that can't just simply be removed, by code
@@mxracingunlimitedltd7784 yes they have internal surge protectors too, Microsoft recommends you plug the console directly into the wall socket. It’s on their community q&a page.
It boggles my mind that Microsoft makes it so hard to fully power down the Xbox. The normal shutdown just makes it go into rest mode, so to fully power it down you need to go into Settings. It’s so unnecessarily cumbersome!
Makes it so hard? So you think pressing the X on your controller, going to your picture and powering off is harder then getting up and pressing the button on the console? Man stfu
You are right it does get pretty warm, I actually wanted make a video about that because I was worried, I used to place it under my TV then I realized I was doing it wrong
Love this minor (but not so minor) tip: Power down appropriately. Do not unplug -or power off system - while in middle of a gaming session, or even if in sleep mode (the mode that runs updates and maintains internet connection in background even if tv is shut down, game is “off” and everything, including you, is in bed for the night. In “sleep mode” the system, like your body, is still operating, it’s just resting, not running full throttle. When you sleep, your body is still working to breath, your brain is still active (dreams, even if you don’t remember, you dream every night) This can totally corrupt your software system, games/game saves/updates (especially if your Xbox is in middle of big update. It’s the same idea as when you start a new game for first time and the loading screen says do NOT turn Xbox off when you see this symbol: (insert whatever spinning/moving icon devs chose to display as an indicator things are happening in the background to save your progress. If devs find it important enough to include those warnings at start of their game, (and we all know we all see them at start of every game) imagine what it would do to entire system, not just that one game, if power is disconnected like this. It’s like driving a car 125 mph then suddenly having emergency brake pulled and every car state pistons firing to electronic equipment like GPS, monitors, cruise control etc.. all just stopping, the entire system shut down with no warning. There’s moving currents and dare I say maybe even moving parts (can’t say for certain on that one these days with the SSD and all) that “freeze” in place so to speak. It’s just not good protocol for electronics of any kind. Now, chances are, your console will resume itself and work out kinks this immediate, unpredictable and sudden power loss can cause. (Engineers these days think of it all) but there’s no guarantee. And repeatedly throttling this power, or loss thereof, can cause long term issues, and at some point your system might not be able to recover. I’ve lost power due to freak circuit breaker bursts, weather storms, etc.. over last few years and both Xbox series X and PS5 turn back on with notice it wasn’t shut down property and immediately runs diagnostics tests to scan for damages and what not. Nothing happened but this “minor” thing to NOT do, is a bigger thing NOT to do. Public service announcement of the day. Done. Finished. Mic drop.
The S is Genius. Games look and Play well.. got one on the All Access Subscription Service with Gamepass and may get another just so the kids stop fighting over it 🤣
What's all the fuss about storage expansion? 512 gb is pretty decent storage to play 10-13 famous games. If you need more than that, I guess you have nothing better to do. I bought series S a couple of days ago just to play fifa and gta or burnout paradise (for nostalgia reasons) and I don't feel I will ever need a storage expansion. This console is pretty sick!!!
I ordered a series S this weekend and gamepass. Should be here in a few days. I think I'm gonna hook up a 2.5 SSD for the regular Xb1 games and all the series S/X games on the baby internal storage.
I love my series s. It honestly puts my PS4 slim to shame in terms of both performance and cooling. It plays AAA titles better than my budget gaming PC too.
2:48 you scared me in that one 😅 Since I have it plugged to a smart outlet, because it has a extra fan cooler attached to it that is always on since the Xbox USB port is always delivering power, so the only way to manually turn the cooler off is either me getting up to press it’s power button 3 times or unplugging the Xbox, I chose to just tell Alexa to turn off the outlet so the Xbox goes completely out of juice. But I do usually wait more than 30 seconds before turning the plug off.
I have never buy series s but i want to buy it now it is the best gaming hardware for me i don't do editing and all that stuff that require pc to do it and some people might think pc is better than console maybe it is maybe because they were rendering editing and all that stuff that can be only done on pc but for me especially a console that can already run youtube and all that and 60 fps since i don't have 120hz monitor and it is really expensive and the ssd load times with 300 dollar is a ton of saving it is just so much better for me, and in conclusion there is nothing that was one things fits all it is always come to yourself and personalize and precision that makes your decision picks which one is the best
I would recommend holding the power button for 10 seconds before removing the power cord. I got into the habit with the OG Xbox one, as holding the power button for 10 secs clears the system cache. Clear the cache will also fix a lot of system issues. Also Ive got a external usb c 3.1 drive(in a custom inclosure with a firecudda SSHD), a usb hub, connected to the kvm switch on my 4k 120 monitors, as well as an LED light strip… been using external drives and led strips since the OG Xbox one and have no issues. My Xbox one s and series s are set up similar minus the KVM switch. So what more than likely happens is your external monitor pulled too many WATTS from the USB port and shorted something in the power supply.
This tip is important for everyone to know. Recently I had a controller update so I did it and also updated the Xbox one controller with Bluetooth as well. Both had every button register NO input except for the Xbox button. I had to hard power off the system to get them both to work. Luckily I have a media remote as well but that didn't help to play a game so this was super important to remember and I did it as a last ditch effort to fix them before getting support.
Man you got yourself a new fan. I'm a ps owner but I followed your advice why not see what xbox have. Its my first xbox ever and it's have been interesting. Yap the quantity of heat and the first days this electronic burning smell it worried me a lot. Not letting me enjoy the machine. But now the smell is gone, it's hot yet on the black cover, but fresh on the side bottom one, I advise using only flat horizontal because of that. The gane that makes it really hot is flight simulator. But never I felt performance problems it's been perfect. Excited to see the next month's.
If you do research on the way the series S handles cooling youll understand the heat comes directly off the gpu like a couple inches most from the black grate to gpu it was desinged to imeddiatley vacate heat out of the shell...any constriction of this negates the design and pushes the heat back into the shell where it wasnt suplosed to be
For air flow id say laying down kist because the rubber stoppers only leave so much room for air to be pulled in....it vents straight off the top black vent so all the air comes in on the sides......i aleays error to giving the most air flow
Solid advice, but regrettably, not advice I can follow. I've got a Mayflash controller adapter, and it's an absolute must for fighting games (although not as crucial as it was during the Xbox One days). Sometimes you've just gotta have those extra face buttons, or the tactility of an arcade joystick, and I'm not paying three hundred dollars for an official one.
If it doesn't work out with Microsoft fixing it. Maybe try getting in touch with TronicsFix to see if he can take a look at it. I don't know if he would do it but wouldn't hurt to try.
I use the same external hard drive for my my series S as I did for my Xbox One, and it works great for all my non-optimized games. My optimized games need to be downloaded directly to the system hard drive, which sucks since most of them are HUGE in terms of memory. Seriously, as much as I want to buy and play Jedi Survivor, I don't have room😢 I've thought about those external drive cards, but they're crazy expensive. Otherwise, in the time I've played it, I've found that setting the console in the vertical position helps regulate exhaust heat much better than laying it flat. I haven't had a terrible problem with heat yet, but I'm still thinking of getting a cooling fan.
Just make sure that external Items etc don’t draw a lot of power. Things like RBG LEDS is fine. External Storage is fine. And a RGB keyboard and mouse is fine.
@@bioback9866 I’m sure a fire Tv would be fine. But the battery charger idk I wouldn’t risk it. A lot of battery chargers pull a decent amount of power. I wouldn’t risk it personally.
Okay so i got some LED stripes behind my desk and the USB is plugged into my series s should i be worried about what you said with the power etc ? it's only small LEDS barely just 1 meter long but after hearing this i'm a little bit concerned although i don't think that just these small stripes could cause any problems?
@@zuo nah don’t worry mate your all good! I’ve got a Series X with RGB keyboard, Mouse, LEDs, and a RGB mouse pad, plus hard drive and Cables for Charging my elite controller
I use to lay my series s flat but it kept crashing and the side that was laying down got piping hot so I've always had my series s standing up ever since and have never had any problems since
the Xbox series S is such an amazing console, I got my PS5 6 months ago and was like man I miss Xbox games so I got a series S 6 weeks ago & it's become my most played console (mainly because gamepass is brilliant). I play on a 43inch 4K TV and I'm so impressed with the series S being able to upscale games to 4K because YES the PS5 is a fantastic native 4K BEAST but damn the series S is a damn good console. image quality aside what's surprised me the most is the Xbox series S is capable of 120fps (at 1080p) and I've tried it with dirt 5, Doom eternal & Fortnite and what's impressed me the most is how consistent the little console is with 120fps because I fully expected to see frame drops but to my surprise the 120fps were just as consistent as my PS5 utilizing 120fps. I can honestly say that the Xbox series S is one of the BEST consoles ever released simply because it's price to performance ratio is on point. you get some much for $299 that it's almost mind boggling. anyone on the fence I highly recommend the series S as it's seriously an amazing little BEAST! happy gaming ✌️
I almost ruined my XBSX when I 1st bought the system by not Fully Shutting Down the Console & covering the console from Dust. IT GOT VERY VERY WARM & Found out I had to go into the Settings to turn off the system !!! LOL. But, now I understand how to fully shutdown & unplug it when not using. Covering up the System when I'm not using it... No problems at all.. I just hope it lasts me a while before buying another Series-X...
I could be wrong, as I am just getting back into console gaming after being a PC gamer for a long time, but if the system died due to to much power draw, it might not be completely dead. Just the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is, a device in the system that stores and distributes power about the system. Modern consoles are pretty similar to PC in this way. Just need to find and install a replacement PSU. Though this may require voiding the warranty as you'd have to break/remove that anti-tampering tape to get to it. Unless there is a way to bypass the internal PSU and plug in an external one. Again, I could be wrong as I've been a PC gamer most my life and just recently got back to playing consoles, though does sound like that could be the issue. Either way, good luck getting it fixed or replaced.
That is fine. His problem was he tried powering a monitor directly from the Xbox. Which monitors can use 50Watts and up some even 100Watts for a 4K one
I use a 120mm usb fan from amazon that sits on rubber feet about 1cm above hot vent and plug it into a phone charger plug and its a very effective way of removing alot of heat and have been doing that for 1.5years no problem at all
I learned my lesson with my Xbox 360 and Xbox One S. Always plug into a wall outlet. Always power off before unplugging the power cable. Do not plug into a external power strip. Try to stick with the cables that came in the box. I have been following this since I got the Xbox One X in 2017. It's still fine now as well as my Series X + S.
Is it advisable to use the instant-on power mode constantly? Or could it affect how long the console lasts? I don't really need the quick start-up, but it's enabled by default as far as I remember.
Ive never used when i had xbox one, one x, now even with series. I use energy saving because just like a pc, or phone 24/7 itll get a lil slow. Nothing like a fresh restart for the best experience
@@ultimategohan1551 good point, personally I used to use it all the time when I had my old one before I gave it away. By the end of my ownership of that Xbox, it still was working amazing great! Tho like you said, maybe energy saving is better for a smoother overall experience by fresh reboots.
@@Angelos_92 I was just thinking this same thing. Only thing I can think to do it grab a power bar with surge protection and hope that's enough. Or get an actual power bank so you have time to power off properly. I know that PlayStation doesn't like being shut off with just power being removed but an Xbox has never complained to me about it so Idk if it doesn't matter or if they just don't tell us
I've noticed that I have to keep a fan next to my series s or it overheats....and it will freeze if it overheats.i also have Astro a40s w mixamp hooked up to it....this video is super awesome.your the man!this video helped me immensely
I'm trying figure out a mod space glitch for my buddy on series s for the SNOWRUNNER game. I have series x and thankfully have no problem with mod downloads or space available for them, but him on the series s vs my x is significantly different, basically he can't download dam near anything for our multiplayer sessions and have fun with the game. I originally thought it was because he had an inferior console. But at least through process of elimination we know this effort is best focused more towards the game itself instead of the console not performing correctly. Dropped a like and appreciated the info man. 🤘 have a good one
The exhaust will get hot dude,,it's supposed to..a lot of heat generated in the new consoles... I have a series X and it gets warm 2 but I always check the back of the device where air goes in and where some of the key features are like the GPU ..if it's cold air circulating in these spots it's working perfectly... Check the sides when you are worried and check the plastic where vents are and you'll be able to tell,, if they do get hot then it's not efficiently moving the air could be caused by type of TV stand you are using or how you've got it stood also whether it's full of dust makes a massive difference,, so always buy good decent brushes,,soft brushes to clean out your vents every other play session only takes 2 seconds.. An the golden rule is if the machine doesn't shut off and it's been running hot for like 2 hours you're not going to have a problem... It's designed to deal with it don't worry Just make sure it's not enclosed and it's not full of dust and you'll be good..
Hey man, my series s does get pretty warm, like you could probably slow cook an egg on it typa hot. But I've got great airflow and you have mentioned it's normal, so thanks for confirming bro, appreciate it😌🙏
Facts.... I had some l.e.d strips hooked to mine so they would come on when I turned the system on Mine is a series x. And they fried the USB ports all of them with one strip plugged in. Luckily I had warranty but this is true.. subbed and liked great psa
But I have a question, to you ss owners longer than me. I left a full day on playing fs2020 that's what it's make it more 🔥. Never turned off all worked perfect performance all good. But I never noticed the fan changing speed for getting colder. Always kept the same speed. Is it normal? Shouldn't go faster to cool when it needs?

Thank you for this info. I have 2 Xbox series x and use all of my USB ports to power different things. Never even occurred to me that something bad could happen. Sorry for your luck.
Ok, network engineer here. Been one for over 20 years. USB is rated to run external devices at 5v. The Series S has 3 USB ports that can support powering 5 V at 900 mA each. You dont make a device with USB ports and not expect to have them power devices. Microsoft sells things like external HD that are designed to run off the UBS ports power. I use a portable monitor with my Series S off my USB port while traveling. Proper shut down is very important. Doing a hard reboot (improper shut down) should only be used when its your last resort. This sounds more like your problem to me. If thats what happened, that can be fixed. Tell MS what happened and their techs can fix it.
Your comments about the portable monitor as well as the external hardrive hit home for me as that is my own set up. I will definitley be following those tips moving forward.
So this 2,5 inch HDDs are out of question for me now. I get a big HDDs with a powered enclosure. And I get more GB for my money. Win win Situation for me.
I brought a series s at last after so many doubts after watching videos where everyone saying that it's not as powerful as the series x but I'm glad I did it'd a perfect little machine
The things i do with my series x 1: turned auto updates off. That way it doesnt stay on standby to check updates while its supposed to be off. 2: when i play a game. And im done. I press the menu button. Start button. Select quit the game. Then go to setting. Power settings. Turn off. Turn off completely. 3: i don't use quick resupe. If i want to play another game. I press start and selzct quit the game then launch another one. 4: i dont install and uninstall then re install on the internal ssd because that's what kills it. As writing and deleting is how you use the cicles... I keep the installed games in the internal SSD and if i finish those games. They stay in the console still. 5: i use an EXTERNAL ssd to install and uninstall games. That way the internal one is only READING but not writing and deleting all the time. I think if you do all those things. Then your console can last very long.... But it's still a shame that xbox decided to link their ssd to the motherboard with an ebcrypted key... So we cant rven repair our own systems. On my xhox one s if it fails i can change the hdd
What I do is I make sure that with the exception of my TV/monitor which is through the HDMI and has its own power plug, anything that I plug-in to my Xbox series S is designed for Xbox. For example I wanted external storage so I got the WD Black P 10. It has the word Xbox on it and on the box says designed for Xbox. This way I know that if I plug it in and use it that it’s not going to damage my system because it was designed to work with an Xbox system and Microsoft endorses the product. Also by the way as a sidenote, I got a month of free game pass ultimate when I bought that because it came with a code and it only cost me about 130 something dollars and it’s 5 TB. Make sure though that it says Xbox series on the box because the older stock would only safe for Xbox one and if you want that game pass ultimate to come with it and you want something that’s freshly made do you want to make sure that it says Xbox series.
I bought the cheaper 512gb expansion card for only 120 dollars on sale for my series s, and they accidentally sent me the 1TB one 🙏😂

You should never unplug any electronic device for a good 10 seconds after shutdown. A lot of devices have fans that run until the units are completely cooled and unplugging it will cause the fan to stop the cooling process… especially true for toaster ovens!
It really doesn't matter.

You can buy external fans as well, and plug the fan into a wall outlet and the fan will suck the hot air out faster and keep your series S alive so much longer.
I tried external fans for my series x, it works but only for the first 30min because it doesn’t spin ass fast as the default fan, so when the Xbox is running a hard game the default fan will start to spin faster then the external fan so at that point the external fan will be holding it back
I soldered a USB plug on wires of a high quality PC fan, one with blades designed to really move air and put that on top. It really helps.
External fans dont work when playing big games
@Michel Darwin it’s advertised as a 1440p console but mostly hits 1080p at 60 and 1440p at 30fps,no one knows what’s coming from Microsoft in the next 5 years but I highly doubt they would make a console which can’t hang in a few years time,I’m still waiting for actually next gen games but till then I guess we gotta settle for what we have
dude if it didn’t make a sound and was room temp or cooler to the touch. that would be twice as questionable. IMO
@Svenskanorden 1 agreed.

I just bought my very own Xbox Series S about a week ago and thank you for the tips I’ll make sure to be extra careful with it.😁
Yea just dont be a dummy like me...
if you plugged it directly into the wall there is a good chance that a brown out or black out (e.g. a power surge) from the grid is what killed your xbox, not the peripherals.
Microsoft says that Xbox’s have surge protectors built in to the power supply and say to not plug them into surge protectors
@@Jqkzy LOL microsoft just wants you to fry your xbox and buy another one bro

My only gripe with the Series S is that fan under the black vent doesn't seem to spin fast enough to vent the hot air fast enough. It's like this on all the Series S consoles I have seen. That fan acts like a 900rpm non-PWM fan. Doesn't move enough air.
Does the console get very hot because of that?
I did my research prior to buying and I'm so glad I did. Coming from a Xbox 360 that I've had for a little over 10 years, and I'm happy to have gone with the Xbox Series S. In addition, great tips!
Wow you messed out on Xbox one and one s. They were great systems
Same, this is my first new console since the 360
Airflow was probably the main problem.
But why would anyone do this? What is the benefit.. This baffles me.
@@dnegel9546 I'm confused as well. I just found it quite stupid (for a lack of better words).
Cool. You connected two devices outputting voltage!!
yup that is what happened for sure
a monitor isnt gonna output 5v lol
@@SpoudeySure it can...
@@dnegel9546 Yeah, it does confuse me as to why anyone would do this if they already had a regular power supply and socket to use for their monitor.
I just think the series s has a problem with any power I used a wired controller by Xbox the next day leaving it in and by by series s nothing else was connected
@@dnegel9546 sorry am a bit slow

@@frozen_potato6957 you can use a monitor.

It would cost 450 if there was a disk drive😂😂😂
love this video !!! , i have owned my series s since release and i wiped it down often but one thing i recommend!!! highly recommend taking the shell of the console , they clog up really bad from the intake vents and after a 30 min take apart cleaning all the boards and removing all the dust it stopped it from overheating and went back to silence. overwise they will drone and could do serious damage to the console!!!
I put a strong fan a few or so feet away blowing cold air towards the port and it works great
You need to leave the system plugged in after it's fully shut down. The fan will keep spinning, this is probably for a good reason. I took this system to my buddy, almost on a weekly bases for over a year now. Before you put it in the backpack, just make sure not to unplug until the fan stopped running. I think that's safe :)
thanks for that buddy
How long does it take for the fan to stop spinning?
Yeah how long does it take for it to stop spinning. Not planning on waiting over and hour just to leave my buddies house lmao
Eh I already shut off the Xbox but I just noticed today that even after hours. The fan still spinning..
The 512GB expansion is now only 99$ on Amazon (116$ In Canada) + taxes (Free Prime Shipping)
It does have a great cpu in regards to the gpu power, a powerful cpu will reduce frame drops and increase minimum 1% frame times
yeah its a solid console, i had to prove to some people the series s (with game play footage) is a very capable system
Just bought a Series S. Your personal experience based tips are rare and spot on. I think this 3rd party power issue killed my Xbox one. Do you recommendsurge protected power strips for consoles?
Surge protects incoming power not power being drawn from the device itself.
Thanx for the tips. I have one which I bought last year still in my closet to give to my son on his birthday to upgrade from his Xbox One. I played around with it when I first bought it. Love the nvme drive in it. Thing is super fast compared to a hard drive. :)
I just got one and i recently did one of your mistakes thank you for letting us know now i know what to do and what not to do
Not everyone can just go to a store and buy another Series S for $300 or whatever.
That's why you buy it from Microsoft and buy the extra warranty

I love my series s. It's powerful and lightweight. Best system I've had in a long time.
I used my external monitor powered by the S all the time and no issues 🤞🏻 and I also use the Xbox storage expansion.
I glad someone else agrees something else caused his Xbox to die not the monitor and external hard drive

Love this minor (but not so minor) tip:
Power down appropriately.
When you sleep, your body is still working to breath, your brain is still active (dreams, even if you don’t remember, you dream every night)
This can totally corrupt your software system, games/game saves/updates (especially if your Xbox is in middle of big update.
It’s the same idea as when you start a new game for first time and the loading screen says do NOT turn Xbox off when you see this symbol:
(insert whatever spinning/moving icon devs chose to display as an indicator things are happening in the background to save your progress.

2:48 you scared me in that one 😅
Since I have it plugged to a smart outlet, because it has a extra fan cooler attached to it that is always on since the Xbox USB port is always delivering power, so the only way to manually turn the cooler off is either me getting up to press it’s power button 3 times or unplugging the Xbox, I chose to just tell Alexa to turn off the outlet so the Xbox goes completely out of juice.
But I do usually wait more than 30 seconds before turning the plug off.

Yea, the series s is a beast of a machine
Thanks for the tips man hope you got your series s situation fixed
I ain't reading allat 🗣

Would it be better to have it laying down or standing.
I’m just ADHD-ing over this
For air flow id say laying down kist because the rubber stoppers only leave so much room for air to be pulled in....it vents straight off the top black vent so all the air comes in on the sides......i aleays error to giving the most air flow
That one is made for it though
If it doesn't work out with Microsoft fixing it. Maybe try getting in touch with TronicsFix to see if he can take a look at it. I don't know if he would do it but wouldn't hurt to try.
I will crack it open myself at that point

You're gonna buy another? They are probably going to come out with a new console by the time it stops working.
YOUR RIGHT... IT'S ACTUALLY DOING VERY WELL. No problems at all.
I always Shutdown my Series S whenever I need to plug the power cord out
Right on. It's always good to have proper power cycling practices
I love the series X. The series S seems perfect for the kiddos also, but it’s certainly impressive.
Thanks for the heads up. I’m just getting my external storage and wasn’t sure if I were going to mess it up by plugging it in and out.
Love my series S. Hoping that having two SSD drives and the storage expansion card plugged in isn’t going to crash it.
That is fine. His problem was he tried powering a monitor directly from the Xbox. Which monitors can use 50Watts and up some even 100Watts for a 4K one
@@ARXInfinite what about having a keyboard and mouse plugged in? Is that safe?
@@jamesmartin3383 100% safe. I have a keyboard n mouse several Things plugged into USBs including USB HUBs those things don’t use a lot of power.
@@ARXInfinite wdym by that
@@Funeqweq he tried powering a monitor from his Xbox??…
I use a 120mm usb fan from amazon that sits on rubber feet about 1cm above hot vent and plug it into a phone charger plug and its a very effective way of removing alot of heat and have been doing that for 1.5years no problem at all
Hi bro do you mind to share the usb fan model/brand? Tq
Just got my series s and this video is priceless! Thank you and Keep up the Good work!
So basically basic stuff that apply to almost all consoles/electronics
Great advice. I was considering buying NYXI Joycons for my oled but they aren’t licensed. Subbed.
Usually get a lot of power black outs in my area during winter. Will this kill my series s?
I don't think it will hurt the machine either way
@@Angelos_92 I was just thinking this same thing.
Interesting. the thing gets warm but I don't feel like using the machine normally really is going to cause any issues
My big question is should you always unplug your console after it's fully shutdown? Like can i leave it plugged in even after i fully shutdown?
yes
I'm trying figure out a mod space glitch for my buddy on series s for the SNOWRUNNER game. I have series x and thankfully have no problem with mod downloads or space available for them, but him on the series s vs my x is significantly different, basically he can't download dam near anything for our multiplayer sessions and have fun with the game. I originally thought it was because he had an inferior console. But at least through process of elimination we know this effort is best focused more towards the game itself instead of the console not performing correctly. Dropped a like and appreciated the info man. 🤘 have a good one
Is it okay to cook my breakfast on my Series S?
Hahah
Ohh mine been getting really hot and I just thought it was having issues but if it is getting hot is normal then I can relax
Great tips.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey man, my series s does get pretty warm, like you could probably slow cook an egg on it typa hot. But I've got great airflow and you have mentioned it's normal, so thanks for confirming bro, appreciate it😌🙏
Facts.... I had some l.e.d strips hooked to mine so they would come on when I turned the system on
Mine is a series x. And they fried the USB ports all of them with one strip plugged in. Luckily I had warranty but this is true.. subbed and liked great psa
Yea…. Learned the hard way
But I have a question, to you ss owners longer than me. I left a full day on playing fs2020 that's what it's make it more 🔥. Never turned off all worked perfect performance all good. But I never noticed the fan changing speed for getting colder. Always kept the same speed. Is it normal? Shouldn't go faster to cool when it needs?
just thinking about buying this console maybe next month if things go as expected......im very excited and this is my 2nd console and 1st in this decade 1st one that i had was ps2 and sold it in 2k17 and i still regret it ☠.....but hopefully i get this console and enjoy!!! i would love to hear some answers from whoever is intrested in as im buying a new monitor as well and i dont know sh*t about monitors so it would make my day if you could answer my questions...thnx
1. would 24 inch be enough
2. is full hd monitor good or nah?
3. is 144 hz good?
4. thank you for your time💖💖
does it take out a lot of power from having a keyboard and mouse plugged into the xbox series s?
Actually I am also curious about that
@@WisePerson729me too but I don't think so
no
Very helpful. Thank you and liked!
I’m cheap but not that cheap 😂
Well now I can honestly say these displays arent worth it
Thank you for this info.
Bro thanks ı will buy series s nice vid
Right on. Don't let my mistake ruin your gaming fun
Wow that’s crazy that peripherals could cause that much harm. And, I want that shirt!
Old school DC baby
So this 2,5 inch HDDs are out of question for me now. I get a big HDDs with a powered enclosure. And I get more GB for my money. Win win Situation for me.
Spending all that money for a $299 Xbox. Just buy a Pc or gaming laptop
@@onecommonname It will be nowhere near as powerful as the series S for $300. You need like $600 just for a laptop with a 1650 graphics card.
@@onecommonname I already have 2 "powerful" PCs but I like the little form factor this tiny thing is awesome.
I am still ok with the HDD but the monitors are a no go
@@jdxcoffee I think i will use the 3,5 inch HDDs just for safety reasons. It can't hurt right? BTW your beard is Epic 😁
Thank you so much this was actually so helpful
Really curious to see if Microsolf can figure out the problem and if they will fix your console.
They did. Update soon
Thank god I always thought it was overheating when the black spot was hot I’m glad to hear it’s normal and it’s that’s what it’s supposed to do
Don't cover the vent 🤦
EVER
Thank you man for the advice🙌🏻, I'm getting my xbox series s soon and I'm so excited!!🥳🥳
I brought a series s at last after so many doubts after watching videos where everyone saying that it's not as powerful as the series x but I'm glad I did it'd a perfect little machine
It really is yes
The things i do with my series x
1: turned auto updates off.
Getting my own xss in 3 days this video surely would help me keep it for 3 more years
I think it just happens with a over excessive amount of playing without letting it cool down
What I do is I make sure that with the exception of my TV/monitor which is through the HDMI and has its own power plug, anything that I plug-in to my Xbox series S is designed for Xbox.
