@Ryan Williams Tell that to Drazen Petrovic who died in a car accident, or Chandler Parsons who's career might over because of a car accident or Jason Williams who's career ended due to a motorcycle accident.
During his rookie year was hit by a drunk driver lost a lung, this was a terrible reporting. And attempted to come back with one lung. Google info it’s free
Bobby Hurley balled out at duke and was on his way up until that 1993 car accident in Sacramento changed his life and career...glad he's staying up and doing well..
I grew up watching this guy play at Duke. He has to be one of the all-time great point guards in college basketball history. His career set the foundation for the Duke program as we know it today!
Man that wingspan is short, I see how genetics were against him defensively. In saying that though, salute to him getting that far with skill and heart. If I remember right he was part of the practice squad that beat the dream team in a scrimmage.
anyone who has ever driven in Sacramento knows how easy it is to get into a car accident because of someone else's recklessness. That game against J Kidd and Cal was a classic game
The accident was the biggest stunt in his career. Without it he wouldn’t have been a superstar but he would been a solid starter in the league. Think Avery Johnson.
He was a product of his dad and Coach K system he also had alot of great players come through that program when it's really no pressure on you to take the team to the top you can just play your game. I give him mad props for even holding it down like he did. It was better PG that could not have done what he done.
Hurley is as nostalgic to me as the Fab Five. I like my PG's fiesty and pesky if they can't give you physical dominance and that was Hurley. Some people loved to hate him, but he never backed down. Kind of reminds of a college version of John Stockton.
I hated Duke but I loved Bobby Hurley. Hurley being from Jersey it wasn't strange seeing him playing pick up in the 5 boroughs. Probably one if the purest point guards I ever seen. Great video, he was so good.
I'm from Jersey, Bobby was a tough point guard. But he was only great with great teams..He was on a powerhouse high school team, and a powerhouse college team....But individually was just "good"
I'm from Jersey City. All I hear about even to this day still is what Bobby Hurley couldn't do instead of what he did. Has a lot better life than probably 95% of those who had the "Elite Gene" which is code word for he's not Black. Guy was as tough as they come. We grew up in same section of Jersey City and my uncle played basketball with and against him on teams since they learned to walk. You should have seen what they had as a gym. White Eagle Hall in bombed out Downtown before it was a trendy concert venue . Yes, I was there during these times I know all those guys. Sister Alan RIP St Anthony's Guardian Angel
St. Anthony's alumni seem to always have a hard time showing up at the pro level despite all the hype in high school and college! I'm not hating, just a consideration looking at former St. Anthony's players
Another banger! Like it or not, he was a beast in early 90’s. Earl Boykins or Louis Bullock (stole this one from someone else), or Marcus Taylor (Michigan)
This is Peter Dinardo I watched Bobby play and grow up in jersey city Bobby was as tough as could be he never backed down to noboby on the ncaa courts or the tough streets of jersey city Bobby was the straw that stirred the drink at duke great player great person great guy good luck my brother hope your coaching career is as successful as your college career was
I've known the Hurleys since I was 8 was good friend with his nephews that I played basketball with them. The addiction was his biggest stunt. He would of been one hell of a PG.
Yo....we need to see front court players too. A lot of guards bruh. Clarence Witherspoon, Antonio McDyess, Brian Reese, Purvis Ellis, Waymon Tisdale, Stacey King, etc. love the content.
I loved the late Mike "Sports Pig" Responts. But, I disagree with his comment. In 1999, Mike made his "All Time Worst 50 NBA Players." He put Bob Hurley, but said, "The real car wreck was his NBA career."
I had to pause this video after watching how cold Kenny Anderson was to see if u had a stunted on him that boy was different in high school and college!!
The professional game wasn't for him, he took it as far as he could as a ball player. What he did was put together an impressive resume, that would make him a decent coach one day. If he's even your neighbor let alone your coach, he knows what it takes to get to the next level. Nothing to sneeze at right there. Make a video about his brother Danny, it'll be quick.
Played with him two years in a row at the prestigious Five-star camp in 1988,1989. Also, against him in Jimmy V all ACC scrimmage across North Carolina in April 1993! I played DII and wasn't heavily recruited back in da day. If without injury, he would have thrived in today's game
Back in the day, he was projected as a modern Bob Cousy: incredible floor general with creativity and speed, but without a jumper. Even without the accident he was never going to be more than a great backup.
Tony Massenburg-Maryland....despite being traded waived and playing overseas, managed to have a long career in the NBA and won a championship in 2005 with the spurs....
You are 100% wrong. Seriously. Just like the case of Jay Williams, his car accident was devastating. He was incredibly close to death. Jay Williams’ leg was shattered. But Hurley came perilously close to death. Ask Mike Peplowski. If he had not gotten to Hurley immediately after the accident, Hurley would not be with us. Also, did you know he could dunk, but couldn’t palm a ball. Also, did you know he ran a 4:18 mile as a high schooler. He was an elite athlete, who lost his elite athleticism in a horrific accident.
Was my favorite player growing up about cried when hit got it the car wreck that changed his course. I have all his basketball cards still, had all his jerseys Still have the red, white & blue kings jersey, had his ITZ shoes. Man imagine what kind of player he could have been. His brother Danny was good too but never went further. Both have turned out to be good coaches!
Lone stunt is the car accident. Kenny Anderson cooked everyone and the 3 was not as vital then as it is now many pgs couldn't shoot it...this may be the first one I don't really agree with. I'm also a partial Duke fan so there's that...
Stunted Growth can you do something for Lindsey Hunter he was the point guard with Detroit he was called The ISIAH THOMAS of the '90s but he never liver up to the comparison. He was a lottery pick in the draft of '93 10th overall three spots behind Hurley. He won two NBA TITLES with Detroit and The LA Lakers.
As Mr. Stunted Growth knows very well, I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American (showing HOW I grew up, and why I think the way I do about things). Sans the terrible car accident, what do you all think Bob Hurley could have been? I don't think that he was another Isiah Thomas or Mark Price, but maybe a 14 points, 7 assists type of player?
Just so everybody knows this about me, and why I think the way I do about things: I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American.
Even before I start the episode I have to say: MANDELA EFFECT 100% Hurley passed away (not injured but PASSED AWAY) in a car accident his rookie year it was all over the news & I remember watching a tribute video more than once. Completely blew my mind about a year ago when I heard he had a 7+ year nba carrier & was Coaching in the NCAA ... WTF...?
Without the accident, I'm not saying he would have been Isiah Thomas or Mark Price. But, I think he could have been a 14-15 points, 8-9 assists guy for 10-12 seasons, had he not had the terrible accident.
Some guys are special players in college, and that's great, but you don't necessarily see them making that transition to the pros. Mateen Cleaves, David Rivers, comes to mind. I put Bobby Hurley in that group, though it is unfair what happened to him w/ the auto accident. I fully expected Grant Hill and Christian Laettner to tear up the league, though. Grant had those nagging injuries and Christian, I don't know.
Honestly with Bob Hurley Sr as your father you have no choice but to be successful. He should write a book on fatherhood and manhood. He’s a great man and made great sons
He played harder than anyone out there. He had short legs, basketball smarts and experience but did not have much of a vertical leap. So he wasn't going to be an all-star. But the auto accident his rookie year ended it. End of story.
After that accident physically he was never the same and it stunted his career...he was never a freak athlete was never a lockdown defender he was a gritty pass first pure pg who was crafty around the rim....alot of PGs have come and gone exactly like he did i wouldnt call him a bust when you have guys like DSJ and MCW following his career path lol
@Sloan Jackson Funny thing is Steve Nash won back to back MVPS essentially being the same player...if you look back at their college careers and take the names off you would think Hurley would have had the type of career Steve did mentally and physically he was done after the accident confidence was gone
I'm not sure about the choice of "stunted" to describe the natural limits of a player or the tragic accidents that derail their development. Hurley was very good at a range of skills and didn't need to have Penny Hardaway's length to be a great fit for those early 90s Duke teams. He reminds me of Ernie DiGregorio, who had short arms but great PG skills and was doing well as a pro until an injury retarded his career.
If you are under 6’4 in the nba you’d better be quick and be a great shooter. If you’re not quick or a great shooter as was the case with Hurley the best you can hope for would be coming off the bench role player which Hurley was able to accomplish. He overachieved no doubt.

As far as true point guard attributes he was the poster child. I think he more so overachieved with his athletic abilities.
How about when Hurley led his Duke squad to beat the Dream Team in a scrimmage in UC San Diego?
