Was DEREK ANDERSON Better Than He Turned Out To Be? What Stunted His Growth?

  • Derek Anderson was a favorite of mine and a lot of people that remember him before he got injured and flashes in the NBA. One of the best two feet jumpers I've seen, and when he gathered in the lane DON'T JUMP! with him! A smooth, natural hooper with gobs of potential that was prematurely taken away from him. What other things Stunted his Growth? Here's what I think.

I wanna thumbs down you for Mercer but only jokingly. I followed him since Kentucky and I never stopped being disappointed in him til the day he retired. When he got drafted by Boston we were all excited because we figured he was on the fast track to stardom with his college teammate Antoine Walker and his college coach Rick Pitino. Then Pitino said he didn't like his game immediately after drafting him (da fuck?! God the Pitino era was so bad). Then you realize he is a shooting guard who can't really shoot, and he never got better.. Though respect to him for a handful of really impactful playoff games with the Pacers and Spurs. Though they were few and far between.

Derek Anderson's highlights on here are dope! he had a smooth playstyle and snuck alot of hard angle dunks ,and his jumper improved from his Cleveland and clippers stint. If Only he had a little more handle far as fundamental changing directions strong crossover to his game to go with his quick 1st step,it would have made him more effective in the half court where he wouldn't have to glyde and slash off balance for a low percentage scoop or floater away from the rim, inWhich because he had them reconstruct knees maybe it wasn't in the cards for it to ever be explosive,,,however he had a miracle career and his IQ and him maintaining kept him around for a stellar career and coat tale Ring in 06. As a Kentucky fan, his injury in the '96-'97 season was one of the most heartbreaking injuries I've ever experienced as a fan. That '97 team was poised to win another ("back-to-back") national championship, and almost did... losing the championship game in overtime to Arizona. I will go to my grave saying and believing that if Derek doesn't tear his ACL they win that year...and that would have made it three in a row ('96, '97, '98). Derek Anderson and Rex Chapman are my two favorite SGs in UK history.

He was supposed to be the answer to Kobe when he went to San Antonio. But I can't agree they were going to topple the Lakers, they got swept his only season there. Then they actually won a ring with the completely unproven at the time Stephen Jackson. Jax used that as a springboard to a very nice career, but that tells me the Spurs could have won with a number of different guys playing that spot. Shit, they won one with Jaren Jackson Sr. in 99, which says to me shooting guard was the 4th or 5th most important position for that team. At least until Ginobili came into his own post Robinson.

Alot of them highlights show his tendency to land on one foot, recipe for disaster.

Was thinking that too. His landings were always dangerous. That's in hindsight though. Until I saw a vid on Drose landing I never thought about that.

not staying with the spurs ruined his career. given his injury history who knows if he could have been healthy but he had his breakout year with the spurs and he was never the same after leaving

What stunted his growth was being on the Cavs and being coached by Mike Fratello. Fratello set the game back with his slow walk up the ball half court style.

You forgot to mention the hard foul from Juwan Howard. Derek Anderson was never the same after that foul. I remember in San Antonio, he was a borderline all star.

Derek Anderson was a beast. My favorite player from Kentucky is Jamal mashburn tho.

His career seems way more amazing now that I know about his early knee stuff . For some reason I never knew about that even though I definitely remember him at Kentucky beating my Cuse. Speaking of Cuse, John Wallace soon?
