I still remember Strickland's behind the back pass that would've connected with Sean Elliot if he'd cut to the basket, but instead became a turnover
That play was pretty much a metaphor of what should've been a hall of fame career for Strickland

That was the prettiest pass EVER thrown in my opinion ! No disrespect to any of the other great PG passers in the NBA but if you watch that play, if Sean Elliot had kept running, he would've caught that pass, in stride, & could've scored any way he saw for ! And after throwing it, Hot Rod could've continued on downcourt ready to turn & play defense. Sweetest pass never converted.

Good video. When he came to Chicago to DePaul, next to Walter Payton he was my favorite city sports figure, and yes even over MJ. He was electric at Depaul, even though as you mentioned, he couldn't shoot, but he could get streaky. After losing to Duke in the tournament one year, I remember Johnny Dawkins giving him high praise and I believe he was a senior. I hadn't realized he missed so many games during his pro career. I guess now I could see why he never many any all-star teams. Yet and still, his play usually spoke for itself as someone who could and would find the open man, as well as his tenacity to drive to the cup. Before giving up basketball for baseball, I learned how to strip/block the shooter going up from him, it was like an overheard swipe type of move. And lastly, I'll never forget the commercial with him, "The Rod and Roll." I think it was with nike

With the exception of Mark Jackson, most of all the other prominent New York point guards had a lot of off the court issues stemming from the environment they grew up in or the people they chose to surround themselves with. Unfortunately these off the court issues bled into their on the court personas and they never reached the heights their respective talents should have taken them. Strick was one of the best floor generals and passers in the NBA during the 90’s. He also was one of the best finishers from the point guard position that we have seen since DRose and Kyrie. However he also had a jumper that was not existent outside of the midrange and he bounced around the league a lot. All in all he had a very solid career and he is someone that both his contemporaries and current players give mad respect to but he just always left you wanting more. Great video bro keep cranking out the bangers 💯

Rod Strickland was COLD! I never realized that he'd never made ALL-STAR. I always assumed he chose to rest. He was unstoppable & so refined in fundamental basketball that you had to respect it. I used to hope A.I. studied him because he couldn't outrun the league forever, so learning to control tempo to your TEAM's advantage may have gotten him back to the FINALS.

    • @libertydrive4388

He had all-star talent, but attitude and work ethic is part of what makes an All-Star as well. He was deficient in those areas. Maybe that's why his teams never won much.

Maaaaaan, there was NOBODY better at breaking down the defense and getting to the hoop. I collect the old scouting books, and the rap on him was always, every year, his attitude and antics. It's very interesting to look at his rookie year next to the other great NYC guard Mark Jackson. One was beloved by the city (at the time and it didn't last long) and an absolute gentleman. The other was kinda crazy and gave zero effs if anyone liked him, including his teammates and coaches. No surprise which one they kept, and which got traded for a washed up and broken down Mo Cheeks.

Unfortunately quite a few of your statements regarding my uncle and untrue and one sided. You all forgot about the best NYC point guard during that era, Dwayne Pearl Washington. Talk about stunted growth! He only played 3 years in the NBA. Here's a player who was great in the open court pushing the ball up the floor, then he gets drafted by the Nets and what does the coach tell him. Walk the ball up the court and pass it to the big men. I believe it was either Bill Fitch or Dave Wohl who was the coach. Man they just destroyed his career. If he were playing today, he would dominate.

True, but you also have to take into account that it’s a different eras between them. Strickland had to be a pure point guard in his era because that was the era of pure point guards. The era that Kyrie is playing in now has guys like Westbrook, Lillard, Curry, and pre-injury D. Rose to name a few, guys who are scoring point guards.

Please follow this as well as possible: I MIGHT want to don a Rod Strickland Blazers jersey at my funeral. I was born in 1973 in Seattle, where I grew up, as you all know. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. This is more than JUST my Blazers fandom. I have long thought that I'd live to be 48 years old, and pass away in 2021. My Dad unexpectedly passed away in 2003, and life hasn't been happy for me ever since. But, even more, 1993-94 was among the BEST times of my life. Arguably a top 3 time of my life. And, specifically during 1994, I remember taking regular trips to Portland, and thinking about The Rod Strickland Song: Lyrics "That guy who used to play guard for the Knicks, Blazers guard Rod Strickland! Traded to Texas, decided on Portland, Blazers guard Rod Strickland!" Whenever I think about Rod Strickland as a Blazer, I think about the BEST times of my life, and "wish that life could be happy for me again, like I was that year." It's 2021 as I write this, and if I'm indeed in the final year or two of my life, Strickland's days as a Blazer, are among the memories I will cherish during my final months. Here is the tune/soundtrack to the Rod Strickland Song. It is the Oakland song from NES Bad News Baseball (another video game that takes me back to HAPPY times in my life): ruclips.net/video/avkG1B1Q-8o/видео.html
