- In the 90s, Kenny Anderson was the mold of what a Point guard was supposed to be. He's from the mecca of basketball at its height, New York City, where expectations for guards came with the territory. He went on to become a star in college, and #2 pick in the NBA draft. Success didn't stop there. In his 3rd season, he became an allstar and looked to be living up to the expectations. What happened from there? Did he lose his work ethic? Hoop politics? Also, did he go broke at some point? Let's get into it.

Well he made it to be a Allstar but maybe others expected he would be a H.O.F, but he had a stellar 14yr career for his height and size.Kenny was one of my favorite lefty's behind NickVanExcel but Andersen stlye dribbling Down the court looked the prettiest in that early mid90s . He was a solid PG before the league got soft and started living off of 3pointers

In college, Kenny was comparable to Nas. Basketball genius with an effortless type of talent. Made it look so easy. The NBA demands even the prodigies work hard to develop and expand. Great video!

Kenny Anderson was that ninja on the court. I remember he punished Bobby Hurley he had him running around in circles with his handle.
I grew up imitating Kenny Anderson on the basketball court. He's my favorite college basketball player ever and one my favorite NBA players ever. I use to work on my handles because of Kenny Anderson. I believe he has a powerful testimony and story to inspire others. Kenny will always be a legend in my eyes!

Facts
The Nets had a young up and coming team with DC, Kenny, and Petro. As a Knick fan, I honestly thought they were the future team of NY/NJ area. Then few years later, they were all gone, with Coach Daley retiring, Petro killed in a car accident, and both DC and Kenny being traded. I always wondered about what could have been with this team had they all stayed together. One of the greatest what if's of the 90s.

Growing up in his era, there was no internet, you tube videos and other social media hype machines that make a player that can dunk the second coming of Jordan.
Back then, you had to be nice. Word of mouth was everything, and the whole world knew of Kenny Anderson.
When me and my middle school friends get together and play domino’s and talk talk everything sports, his name as a bust and clown always comes up.
Very few know of the inner demons he fought daily and continues to do so. We’d all love to relive our youth, knowing what we know today. But you live the life you’re given.
Kenny has a good heart, always has. My salute to the real King of New York.

He gave me the whole rundown of his story, it really stuck with me on his childhood and shows me how delicate youth can be. He gave Bobby Hurley and Duke dat WORK. Actually, Kenny wanted to attend Georgetown since his Sophomore year. Kenny used to wear a Gtown cap at school. However, Coach Thompson would send an assistant to see him instead of going in person which Kenny was turned off!! Kenny even said, if Thompson came to see him, he would have easily committed there. Kenny, Mourning and Mutombo would have won a Championship together.
Saw him play as a freshman in hs vs Maliki Sealy & Tolentine hs. Was amazing to watch & had the potential to be the next Isaiah Thomas. Still had a great career considering.

I went from collecting NY Post clippings of Kenny to playing against him once at Molley. He was by far the best player I’d ever played against. Fast forward several years and he was at a club I was working security for with about 20 people. You’re right about him taking care of his people which can suck you dry real quick. I was so surprised though that he didn’t light up the league because he had so much promise. But overall, he’s a really good dude. I hope he pulls through also. Great piece!

Stunted you a bad man for this one. I'm only in my early 30s but I remember the Kenny and big Derrick nets from elementary school. He was cold. And a lefty. My coach used to say being a lefty makes your game so much more versatile.
Kenny Anderson aka Chibbs ( nick name) I think he lived up to his expectations he made it too the league and balled on a elite level in college and in the league. I think coach not having coach Chuck Daly in NJ any longer was the first step towards his stunted growth. Fun fact when Michael Jordan retired the first time the following season Kenny made the all star team and got the most all star votes that year..I agree he loved his hood and friends and off the court distractions played a large part in his career turning out how it did. The playing for alot of teams if the talent was not there they would not have traded for him and some of those situstions you have to look at who the coach was and who he had to play with. if you playing with teammates that feel they are the main man or should be the main man that hinders you, if your play style is one way but the coach has a style he wants played but its not to your strength that can hinder you as a player also. then add the off the court things he was into... I have always been a fan of kenny Anderson those handles and passing skills along with the nack to get to the basket was nice. if he played in the modern era he would be one of the best no doubt.. salute to Mr Chibbs hopefully his journey in life continues to go upward

His growth wasn't stunted. He had a career 98 percent of the people who ever played in the league wish they had. He wasn't a high lottery pick like Kenny Anderson.

Kenny is doing very well in life. He has a great relationship with most of his children, especially his youngest Kenny Jr, and his step daughter whom he and his long time Natasha raised. He owns houses in Doral Fl and Nashville Tennessee where he has been the head men's basketball coach at Fisk University the last 4 years. He had a stroke about 3 years ago and has made an excellent recovery. Kenny is living his best life as a family man and coach. My guy KA aka Chibbs is doing just fine. He's overcome many obstacles is life and continues his personal and professional growth. The story is still being written.

I remember watching Kenny Anderson in the early 90s when he was playing for Georgia Tech. Im from Atlanta so we were proud of him when he got drafted to the NBA. He started out great but he fizzled out after he left New Jersey.
This was my fav NBA player at the time. I swore I was him when I played. I remember him being on magazine covers as an 8th grader. He will always be one of the NYC Point Gods
I knew Kenny from our CYO days. He was 1 year older then me but I loved watching him and his team play on Saturday mornings at Our Lady of the Angelus school in Rego Park.

Other than Isiah Thomas, no other PG has ever been as naturally gifted. But he didn't appear to work on his game much, if at all, and it began to show in the pros. Inimitable as a player (often goes against his body's natural inertia on drives and forays to the hoop), he also wasn't physically suited to be a top guard without putting in the time to train and get stronger. Amazing he finishes as one of THE Greatest HS players in any sport, and one of THE BEST college players ever, based mainly off his natural gifts and seasoned aptitude for the game. SALUTE!
He also had that broken wrist against the Knicks that seemed to change him. One of my favorite players when I was a kid. Hope he's doing well.

Kenny was Iverson before Iverson,for new generations that know none about OG 1st take experience. He was bad ass: a beast of a ball handler
I wouldn’t compare them at all. Iverson was more athletic and didn’t look to dish the rock. He was a SG stuck in a PG’s body. Kenny was a true PG and is Physically bigger than Iverson - not even close to Iverson’s athleticism.

Was that Oakley? I guess I'll have to look it up but I've been remembering it as Starks all these years. But absolutely it was dirty. Nets were running circles around them that afternoon so the knicks handled it the way they handled that type of thing back then. We didn't have cable so I never missed those Sunday NBA on NBC games bcuz that's all I had.
Anyway, I was about to comment that the foul/wrist injury may have been the biggest stunt. You're right, he was never the same after.

My favorite player when I was in high school in the early-mid 90’s... I really think had he stayed in Jersey, or with Portland for that matter, he’d have had a more distinguished career... maybe not HOF, but he made some bad decisions after Portland dealt him to bring in Stoudemire. You’re right tho, when you get traded so many times, you lose some of what’s special about you and gain that journeyman title

Just like Mookie blaylock, Vin baker, Steve Francis and Countless others he drank himself out of the league because of Taboo shit in the black community. Gosh, I loved watching the Saturday afternoon games featuring GT while Dickie V called it. Kenny Anderson was the Charlie Parker of basketball and i confine my memories only to the beauty and improvisational riffs K..A. executed so effortlessly. I still have a poster of him from his sophomore year st Tech called "The Wizard of Aaaaaaahs" he was dressed like a genie. Also I loved how he cooked Bobby Hurley. Thanks man, great video

Man I sure wish players stayed longer n didn't transfer like crazy!! Used to be you read about players in "Street n Smith" or "Athlons" m then watched Em' n saw if the evaluation was correct in your eyes!! That Georgia Tech team battled UNC n Duke during that season n then got in NCAA tournament n played LSU *( With Shaq,Stanley Roberts*(both 7'0-7'1" 280ish-315lbs big men who were mobile n ferocious)*+ Chris Jackson*(Mahmoud Abdul Rauf)* n played UNLV too n can't remember if that was in tournament that year or the next!! Kenny Anderson was/is a True Legend n knew once he played in Portland*(I live close by)* n married the chick from MTVs "REAL WORLD" that he had lost something to his game!! Didn't know about whatever else he dealt with, but these dudes get millions n millions at such a young age m put on a stage where everything is scrutinized n then coached by Guys who have their own way ideas,style, n Selfish Agendas that these Kids,Young Men Might Not be Ideal fits for!! Kenny was my guy since Lethal Weapon 3. One of the best ball handlers EVER. But when he left Tech, he was not ready mentally or physically. And that was the beginning of the end because he never really grew.

I went to same HS as Kenny, Archbishop Molloy in Queens, I am older but knew Kenny when he was there. I played Baseball for Coach Curran. Kenny was so much fun to watch and just the nicest kid . I think cpl of things hurt Kenny, The drinking was a major problem, Have so many women use him for his money, and little known fact, His knees were shot by 1998. Kenny is now HC at FISK University and doing terrific
When I was in high school hooping Kenny Anderson used to be there all the time at my practice his son went to the school they nice people. Lil Kenny was cool af man and Kenny Anderson never acted liked he was better than anyone

I saw Kenny, as a high school freshman. Dude was major D1 ready, right then, and there! At GTech, he was a wizard! The shake move on Bobby Hurley is iconic!
As for the Nets, they had a crew, under Chuck Daley. Had Drazen Petrovic still been alive, the Nets, with Kenny, Drazen, Derrick and coach Chuck, would have been to at least one of those non-Mike Finals! ('94 or '95).
And even though he played 15 years, Kenny had a lot of physical issues, due to his small body frame. His immaturity, off-court, hampered him, as well, but even Hall of Famers have gone down the immature road...!

I went to Jack Currans Summer Basketball Camp at Fordham during the summer entering 5th grade,86 or 87 maybe. Kenny was one of the instructors ,Kenny Smith made appearance, and just watching him as an 9 yr old was mesmerizing. I had high expectations for him and living in the Bronx I was able to have my dad bring me and friends to Meadowlands to see him D.C, Drazen, Chris Morris ,and those cheap seats. I was a huge Knicks fan but expensive seats and parking was too much to ask for.
