I always loved it when Harper replaced Steve Kerr off the bench Ron Harper was part of the BIG TEAM Bulls , and often played the small Forward , or shooting guard position for giving Jordan , and Pippen . That is three living legends Harper covered , and did very well. He never seemed to replace Rodman as Rodman seemed to play entire games whenever possible. This explains why whenever he scored on a drive on a big leap he always got benched right away.
Lemme bring up 1 other point as well. That 89-90 season where he got traded to the Clippers, Harper was playing at an elite level. WIth how stacked the West was with guard talent and playing for a "lowly" Clippers squad, I'm not sure he would've been named to the All-Star team, but with the numbers he was putting up, he damn well should've been! If that was a glimpse of "Prime Harper", can you imagine what kind of numbers he would've put up during his peak years??? The torn ACL really robbed him of that explosiveness we once saw with the Cavs. I mean, you would see it occasionally post-injury but just not with the regularity. He would've been in the discussion as top shooting guards of the 90's. Better than Reggie. Better than Sprewell. Better than Richmond. There's no discussion he was as good as MJ, ever. Only Kobe has ever come close. But during his hey day, Harp was one of the few that would not back down from MJ's greatness and always brought his A-game when his team faced the Bulls.
Numbers was still above par after the injury in LA lol. Numbers didn't dip drastically until he made the decision to take on the role of the Bulls point guard and defender.
Harper was a BEAST! I remember him bringing that heat everytime my hometown Bulls played his teams. He was limited by injuries THATS IT. We were happy as hell when he came to Chicago. Even at 60% of himself his defense and wingspan along with MJ, PIP, AND RODMAN was a defensive shutdown crew with high basketball I.Qs and leadership!! Love that dude!
Admittedly, I recently began viewing your work. While I've enjoyed the videos I've watched, especially in relation to the players you've chosen to highlight thus far, there is one element that I'd like to see you cover a bit more: a player as a person. I'm not asking/expecting a deep dive. Your videos would have to take on a whole new life. Instead, I'm suggesting something about the player...an experience... a challenge/struggle...a personality trait/characteristic, etc. With this particular video focusing on Ron Harper, I think he lends perfectly to what I'm suggesting. In the early/mid 90's, Ron came to the Clippers via trade. As a fan who was in my early 20's, it was the first time (in a long time) to be excited about a Clippers' personnel move (we know they certainly couldn't draft back then). Ron gave the Clippers a proven scorer, and one who could play defense. Ron's accomplishments on the court are well known to most fans. However, this is not what I remember most about Ron Harper. When Ron was becoming a superstar in college, it meant more time in front of the camera. What many fans noted early on was how Ron seemed to never provide time to answer a few questions...or offer a comment about the just-finished game. Ron was gaining a reputation as a snob off the court...as though he hadn't the time for some ill-informed sports journalist. As he moved into the pros, this reputation followed him. When Ron began noticing the early press, and how many teammates said he seemed standoff-ish, Ron finally reached out to his agent for 2 things: 1) Help with a problem that had affected him all through childhood, his teenage years, and now as a young adult, and 2) Help with finding the best way to announce to the world that he had stuttered horribly his whole life, and how ashamed it made him feel, and as a result of incessant teasing, Ron would isolate himself socially, and bury that drive/frustration into his basketball game. Like I said, it was very poignant, and extremely brave for an NBA star, in the early 80's, mind you, to find the courage to say that he was a stutterer. He not only wanted to finally get the right help for it, but to also speak out so other kids in the same predicament would see that it need not define them, and that solutions are available. That whole time said a lot about Ron and his character, I thought. Lastly, I realize that most NBA players won't have such a story, or experience, but I can guarantee that, if you look deep enough, you'll find something in the story of every NBA'er that had a defining moment in their path to becoming a professional athlete.
I saw him and he was phenomenal at Cleveland - on his way to upper echelon stardom the least during that time... really nice video but you left out his athleticism and exceptional body control (greater than most players today in the air), which meant more during the time period of his hayday as he could take a blow and still score...the injuries definitely stunted his growth as many athletes develop their shot in the NBA...overstated was the 3 ball as that was not prevelant during this time period...
Ron Harper:had a respectable career and had a lot of heart but injuries slowed him down through the years and did his thing off the bench and stepping up when needed...glad ron harper is doing fine and well...salute and respect stunted growth...
Hollywood Harp. As a shorty he was one of my fav players athletic and a high basketball IQ. When the Cavs traded him to the clippers I was shocked. After the trade he continued to get buckets for the LA clippers. and even after the knee injury in 91 he came back getting buckets and the clippers made 2 playoff appearances. He singed with the bulls in 1994. to hoop with his guy Scottie Pippen and excepted a new role he no longer focused on getting buckets but playing defense and using his high basketball IQ. Salute Ron Harper.. I don't think he had a stunted career I agree he was not a pure shooter but his career was dope.
Big ups for this 1. Ron was 1 of my favorite players and a versatile high flyer before MJ came. His career was more impressive as he got older b/c he reinvented himself and got a few rings. A definitive HOF'er...
Ron Harper was a beast but got injured. Wasn’t the same after. Chris Broussard is a clown. Dude knows very little about sports. Can’t stand him. Guys like Ron Harper and Mitch Richmond used to give Jordan fits. Harper on defense, mitch on offense. Jordan is the goat to me but there were guys who gave him problems in his prime. Salute
Ron was the hardest working and perfect defensive role player you could have, that's why MJ, Kobe, and Philp liked him. The bulls had three of the top 7 defensive players in the league, that's another reason they won so much.
At a Summer Pick up game in 1986 Oxford, Ohio (Withrow Court) After a oulet pass from Ron Hunter... Ron Harper dunked over my head... As he took off from the foul line. OooH YEAH... Indeed, He couId Fly like MJ! I was a high schooler, AWE STRUCK. I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT DAY🤘✌
Ron was really a great combo guard. He was a decent stand still shooter. Great lead ball handler. Athletic defender. And apparently under appreciated by the Cavaliers. And we will never know why.
Agreed,,the most Bogus trade in Cleveland cavs history. Ohio is and has always been political, they said he was running with a bad crowd and he was really close to one of them DopeBoys that kept appearing in court and Harper loyalty to them after being warned was 1 of the main reasons they moved him .rumors of if him smashing the owners ( wayne embry)of Cavs daughter at that time was alleged.
I'm from NE Ohio. He went to Miami of Ohio. When he came into the league they said he was a Jordan type player. He had some injuries and he could never fly like he did...a d he was a great leaper. I thought he would fizzle out buy he changed his game and became a key secondary player. He ended up having a great career because he was able to alter his game.
My stepfather is from Dayton Ohio also where Ron Harper is from and hes told me plenty of times that Ron Harper was a bad boy period before making it to the league he said Ron Harper had Jordan like ability if not better then Mike I know some people won't believe it but this is how he described it to me he thought Ron Harper was up there w Mike and better then Drexler
Ron Harper was a poormen's Michael Jordan. He was a great contributor in Bulls defense. His tenacious defense helped the Bulls to won 3 Titles in a row.
Harper got traded from Cavs because he was banging the GM’s daughter, and thus one of the worst trades is history for Danny Ferry happened. Harper doesn’t get traded, there’s a good chance Harper doesn’t bust his ACL like he did in LA, and the Cavs finally have enough to get past MJ at least one of those times in early 90’s and make a run and win a championship. But, that never happened of course....
His twin was a teacher at my alma mater Central high school in Philly. Great guy! His brother was an incredible player. Both were masters at their crafts.
Good breakdown fam. Now thinking back, you're right about his J. He was one of them, intangible players. In his earlier nba years, he had the athleticism and them sneaky quick hands on D to give MJ some issues, as they went at it on several occasions. I give him absolute credit for realizing that he fit a "role" when he came here to Chi. And with all due respect, I wish I could find the video from nbc5 chicago, where they spoke with him after they beat the sonics. Harp was obviously tipsy, and you know he stutters at times. I was excited for him, that he was asked a question, and the live delay button must've gotten stuck. Again, I was excited and laughing with him as he started his answer off with saying "Sh!@@@@@@DD"😲🤣, trying to get it out. Man, I was rollin and ended up crying from rollin so hard. Much Respect Fam, and Peace and Love to Harp, he's a real cool kat in person. Would you ever consider doing Craig Hodges?
Bro I like your channel but you got this one wrong. Harp had big time game. The injuries slowed him down a little but he was still balling after his injuries. I watched him play a lot of games against my hometown Bulls before the injuries.
I definitely agree with what you’re saying about demanding the assignments. However, if the rest of the team doesn’t back him.. either he gets benched or mess up the whole team defense.
I grew up in Long Beach and when I was a yung boy I remember him putting up numbers on the Cavs and the Clippers Eventually he would end up playing for my Lakers
I know, Ron Harper was one of my favorite players! Stunted his growth, the guy has 5 rings and was a starter on both the Bulls and Lakers both coached by Phill Jackson! This guy is just to young to know how basketball was played back then, compared to soft and all about shooting threes! 😎
Ron was an example of intelligence, resilience and teamwork. He accepted a minor offensive role to become a role player in offense and being a defensive top dog...the result: championships . He did the same later with the Lakers.
Yo STG love the channel I don't get why this guys get defensive when you access there growth being stunted maybe aside from Mr Forte lol not the hate part but maybe personal but your actually paying homage to there careers oh btw can you do Kendall Gill I think he's kind in the mold of Harp
i saw a a similar post where it says that Ron Harper also played with the Cavs ( now i remember Derek Harper played with Cleveland, but i never knew that Ron also played with Cleveland. What year did Ron Harper play for Cleveland.
Ron Harper was drafted 8th in the first round in the '86 draft. He plays three seasons and then was traded to the Clippers during the 89-90 season. And Derek Harper never played for the Cavaliers.
Folks forget that as a Laker it was he and Rick Fox who was out there guarding the main opposition often times. Harper was a very smart all around player who was still effective after he had no knees left. He has a son who I'm sure will be a solid pro somewhere.
@4:50 leads to a good point. These guys didn't have a 3 point line when developing their habits so if that wasn't the case they would have been different players than they ended up being in that era. Basketball now is untouchable
At the time Harper was in Cleveland before his injury, he was rated right under Jordan as far as talent. But what I get tired of is people acting like everyone was in fear of Jordan. That's insane. Players took it to him all the time. But naturally Jordan had more success. But if a person says no one talked trash to Jordan or went at him they are either lying or didn't watch much basketball during that time.
@@mrjferg74 that is true. But the narrative has grown more and more over the years that everyone feared him. And it's just not true. Did Jordan usually get the best in the end, yes. But that doesn't mean players didn't challenge him and make him earn it.
ask Gary Payton if he feared MJ. lol There were alot of players who respected Jordan's unrivaled competitiveness, but if you're a pro athlete and you're scared before you even step out on the floor, you shouldn't be playing.
I just mentioned about two weeks ago on Madison St in Chicago how cold this man was, Joe Dumars was a good defender and Ron Harper was to . And he was really about the same height and weight as Michael Jordan, before the knee injury Ron was an athletic guy who could defend well. The brother turned out well 5 championships.

Everybody who knows 80s and 90s basketball knows that Ron Harper was a great player early on. After the injuries he became a role player, but never missed a beat in contributing to his teams five championships. I don’t know how you can see his growth with stunted when he did everything the right way according to the stages of his career he found himself in. And also, Michael Jordans game-winning shot against the Cavaliers was not in the Eastern conference finals. It was the first round. In 1989 the Detroit Pistons won the East.
Ron Harper after being traded led the clippers to the best record in the NBA. They were rolling until the knee injury. He was able to rebound after the injury and still got 6 rings. I'll always be a Ron Harper fan.
That Craig Ehlo shot was in the late 80’s. You didn’t argue with your coach back then. Or better yet, “demand something “. Even in the NBA. Guarding a player on the last shot isn’t something that could be “demanded”. It wasn’t like that back then.
I think u got it 100% right with the injuries ... but I don’t think he was playing in the “wrong” era ... you see it in today’s nba where the deep ball is everything where players who can get the the cup “ Greek freak” “Ben Simmons” don’t need to necessarily shoot 3s ... after his injuries he remained very effective in a limited role to make the last 8/9 years of his career meaningful that’s due to basketball IQ .. could he have had better #s maybe but we won’t ever know ... always a great work tho .. respect
Did you mean the deep ball "isn't" everything? Assuming so, it's not everything, (although those examples haven't yet won in that drive only style) It would've made it easier on his body had he had a better shot though, or shot it more is all(era had a lot to do with it). He was definitely still good after the injuries, just not like he could've been. Respect man, good input.
Man, I wish my basketball career was stunted with five NBA championships and blanketed respect from teammates and opponents alike. Excuse me while I go polish my Best Teammate Award from my JV season.

Ron Harper should have made a all star team when he led the clippers to the playoffs in 92 and 93 back to back seasons (18.ppg and 5 assist) with his below average 3pt % he still was servicable 20 ft on in and broke the defense down 1on1 while being a solid assisting playmaker from the 2spot.
Low-key Ron Harp was giving Len Bias that work
that dunk was nasty
Stop it bias didn't even jump he was trying to draw the charge talk about when bias yammed on his butt
Bias was trying to draw a charge it’s a difference e with somebody actually jumping Ron was nice though bias rocked him earlier in that game
Before his injuries.... when he was in Cleveland he was on that Jordan and Drexler level as far as who's up next and who's gonna be the best SG in the league... Dude was a straight beast in Cleveland in the 80's.... My uncle was his Center.. hahaha. For real... he was legit
Dope content! Stacy Augmon 💯✌🏾
I always *heard* how good Ron Harper was but never saw it. Shout out to you and this video for historical reference. 👍🏾
He was so nice, especially in college.
@@stuntedgrowth u did a really good job and breaking down his career and in game flaws that really stunted him from being a superstar or 5star performer however timing is almost everything, Harper was caught in the middle because if he would have came out too later like in the 90s he would have had more competition being able to shoot 3s with his play style ,but he was a 4star type player 2years with the cavs and clippers and a3star player overall
Clippers amd Cavs he was nice
Doc Strange Chicago fan here....he had his best years in Cleveland and LA but i was still happy the Bulls picked him up...i knew he was a good VETERAN to add to the team and i knew he still had a bit left in the tank...great defender and experienced
Injuries but don’t get it twisted. He was a good player but not great after those injuries. He could fly. He was very athletic and long.
Agreed
This Ron Harper highlight reel is fire! 🔥
Ron Harper:had a respectable career and had a lot of heart but injuries slowed him down through the years and did his thing off the bench and stepping up when needed...glad ron harper is doing fine and well...salute and respect stunted growth...
What are you talking about? He started for 4 championshp teams. Off the bench where?
Insightful video. I don't necessarily agree with it all but I think you brought up many good points and you definitely know your hoops history, my OG!
Appreciate ya fam
From my hometown. My dad said he used to watch him and his twin brother play at the Dakota center when he was just in high school.
I rewound this more than any of ur vids. Dope highlights. Man had game
Serious game. Ron was so smooth before the injuries and glimpses after.
ONLY THE KNEE INJURY
PHIL ALWAYS PUT HIM ON THE TEAM FOR A REASON
Big ups for this 1. Ron was 1 of my favorite players and a versatile high flyer before MJ came. His career was more impressive as he got older b/c he reinvented himself and got a few rings. A definitive HOF'er...
Harper came into the league after Jordan
Ron Harper was a beast but got injured. Wasn’t the same after. Chris Broussard is a clown. Dude knows very little about sports. Can’t stand him. Guys like Ron Harper and Mitch Richmond used to give Jordan fits. Harper on defense, mitch on offense. Jordan is the goat to me but there were guys who gave him problems in his prime. Salute
facts
Mitch Richmond was a Hooper that was very underated
Right. The bulls only needed him to do one thing play defense.
This is bs. Ron Harper was a tough player. You need to do more research on RON
Ron was the hardest working and perfect defensive role player you could have, that's why MJ, Kobe, and Philp liked him. The bulls had three of the top 7 defensive players in the league, that's another reason they won so much.
I have a ton of respect for him. People forget how good he was before the injury. And he was a big part of the Bulls second three peat
Harold miner... aka baby Jordan... was watching espn today and today’s his birthday... keep up the good vids
At a Summer Pick up game in 1986
Oxford, Ohio (Withrow Court) After a oulet pass from Ron Hunter... Ron Harper dunked over my head... As he took off from the foul line. OooH YEAH... Indeed, He couId Fly like MJ! I was a high schooler, AWE STRUCK. I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT DAY🤘✌
Shout out Rick Majerus @5:41
Dayton in the house!!! Thanks for the vid
He was a starter on all the second repeat for the bulls, great player, and went on to have a great career at the Lakers, a beast, loved him
Harper's late career almost mirrors Shaun Livingston's late career on the Warriors took a step back and became a veteran stabilizer.
Carl Wallace
I heard the one that he smashed Wayne Embry’s daughter. Something similar got Robert Horry shipped out of Houston.
I watch videos like this and get annoyed by the hype and lack of knowledge, but you nailed it through and through. Well done and well thought out.
Man...I remember Ron showing glimpses of Jordan's influence!!!
Here’s another good one JR Rider!!!!! Nuff said.
We played Miami of Ohio all 4 of Harper's years, he got tougher & tougher. He was the next Dr. J till the knees gave out.
His twin was a teacher at my alma mater Central high school in Philly. Great guy! His brother was an incredible player. Both were masters at their crafts.
937 baby! He went to school and played with my biological father. Let's get it!!!
Yes sir the 💎 city!!!!! His girlfriend at the time at Kiser was my.moms best friend lol
Can’t wait for the John Salley stunted growth!
I'm a lifelong Cavs fan. He did a 360 layup on Dr J. You have to see it, if you can find it
Dr j himself in a interview said that 360lay up harper did is what forced him into retirement along with a dunk .
JC. I love videos brother. Keep up the good work.
1990 Clippers when Ron played, I became a Clipper fan. 30 games later Clipper injury. That was that
Good one man👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾Waiting on that Steve Smith and Billy Owens. Maybe Anthony Peeler too.
Love fam. I'm sure Harp would get a kick out of that story. Cool dude
This is fair and appreciated.
This is the argument for every NBA player. Thank you
Good analysis of his overall game & career including the injuries & 5 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Bro I like your channel but you got this one wrong. Harp had big time game. The injuries slowed him down a little but he was still balling after his injuries. I watched him play a lot of games against my hometown Bulls before the injuries.
Ron Harper was a Baller. One of the best underrated player who played for two teams that won championship (Bulls and Lakers)
I definitely agree with what you’re saying about demanding the assignments. However, if the rest of the team doesn’t back him.. either he gets benched or mess up the whole team defense.
I've always said that! Harper gave Jordan FITS!!!!!!
Yes I do agree and I am so happy someone felt the same way I do!
Exactly! The presenter has a narrow view
I 2nd that emotion on Kendall Gill. He was another of my favorite 2 guards from the 90s.
Comes with it. All good. Salute man
@@stuntedgrowth post ya stas bum ass nigga
Ah, not sure if I would say "kind of the mold". They did different things .
I remember his years with the Cavs, oh man was he good
i saw a a similar post where it says that Ron Harper also played with the Cavs ( now i remember Derek Harper played with Cleveland, but i never knew that Ron also played with Cleveland.
Jonathan Collins bro players were scared of Jordan. I hate it but it is what it is there’s videos of ppl saying how they never wanted to piss him off
@@versatillion15 totally disagree. Maybe the average ones but not the very best ones.
They put mike on like God level. No one ever mentions how Mitch Richmond used to give mike all kind of headaches
Loving this one thanks for sharing very information blessed love to all knowledge is power hopefully everyone pays attention keep up the good work just give him the credit and respect that he deserve you’re so wrong the coach couldn’t still would of been a mismatch 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Wow, that one picture when he was young that they showed right around 2:48 looked like Jordan’s pic when he was young.
He was slept on. The X factor on that 98 bulls team. Big guard who could defend
Good analysis.
Dayton, Ohio stand up!
He was a BEAST! Posterized a lot of dudes and his defense was really solid
Glad he won rings with the Bulls & his idol MJ
HELL YEAH he should be in HOF, AT THE LEAST NOMINATED!
Never change the instrumental...
That knee injury took away a lot of his athleticism.
Man, I wish my basketball career was stunted with five NBA championships and blanketed respect from teammates and opponents alike. Excuse me while I go polish my Best Teammate Award from my JV season.
