The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.

One thing many don't know about Gervin is he was also a great person in the community. In summers without cameras around he would spend time visiting poor communities around San Antonio with the group Concerned Athletes In Action helping get kids scholarships.....I was one of those kids.
Then why was a Coke addict at the end of his pro basketball career.?
I work at his School in SA. He is extremely humble and nice.

All those who played with him agree on these points. Championships, drug use (don't recall Gervin missing games due to drug use) are not being discussed. If you don 't like Gervin, then watch some other video.
No sir, it is YOU who is missing the point.Admittedly, George Gervin was a truly great offensive player with a unique style.But he never won a championship anywhere.Not even in high school.That seriously detracts from the argument that he was an all time great. And, in fact, George developed a serious cocaine problem in the mid 1980`s.He was hospitalized for it and it almost killed him.@@dmichael100

Criminally underrated and underappreciated....from the ABA it was all about Doc, Ice and the Skywalker! They all brought the flavor into the NBA and saved it, along with Connie Hawkins as well.

Yes, 53 in a half, then sat with almost 4min to go in 3rd quarter and never returned after scoring 63, does anybody think any of the players today would have done that? LeBron,?Harden?Kobe?...even Jordan? I watched Kobe in his last game he played, it was APPALLING, he shot the ball every time he touched it, forced shots and just kept on fireing, and it was atrocious, the Jazz players towds the end were actually moving out of his way so he could score, he shot over 50 times, a horrible percentage, who cares he got 60, it was a discrace, but it was what he was all about, HIM

I was in the USAF. Lackland AFB in San Antonio. I saw him play in the Hemisphere. No one could ever stop him, no one!

I made many trips to Hemisphere Arena many times like you did with friends, and I loved watching the best smoothest scorer ever played the game.

Jonny, so glad you did a segment on the ICEMAN, one of my all-time favorites, saw him play many many times in the ABA and NBA. A one of a kind and one of the forgotten, under recognized unstoppable, super smooth, effortlessly all time GREATEST hands down players of ALL TIME, never to be duplicated, period! just go check out the raving comments about him from any player who played against him, any coach who coached against him, any commentator who watched him, any reporter who covered basketball when he played, they all will say the same thing, "WOW" just go look it up. he had moves near the basket in such a smooth way that NO one ever had or could duplicate period. his FINGER ROLL was so smooth so balletic, like it was in slow motion and, he did it a lot of different ways to who he was doing it against, if it was at a big man, he launched it high and spinning smoothly over him and it would drop down spinning, swish. if it was along the baseline, he would slither and twist his body and smoothly float it high to swish it or smoothly spin it like a pool shot beautifully off glass but softly with unbelievable precision. No one, no one had the smooth, effortless arsinal in his bag like him back then or today, period. His jumpshot was an unusual looking shot near his ear and was silky smooth with uncanny accuracy from different angles and body contortions never seemingly breaking a sweat. He was long and lanky yet, he was a good rebounder and could drive and slam on opponents, always landing on his feet, never looking off balance, then smoothly running back in his trademark glide in his stride way, back down court. A machine when it came to scoring in ways others could not, he was something to watch, a one of a kind and an ALL-TIME GREAT...he said, with the way the game is played today, the rules, he would easily average close to 40, no problem....never known for taking bad or forced shots and he wasn't a volume scorer taking 30 or 40 shots..he was ...THE ICEMAN....

I have been railing on about that for years. If they did, Julius Erving would be one of the few players in history who scored over 30,000 points. Gervin and Erving also got shortchanged because there is so little video of them in action. We don't have a full view of their greatness.
I'm old enough to have watched him play. He was ridiculous. He'd do figure rolls reaching around behind his defender's back. Unstoppable. Creative beyond belief. Def the kind of player you'd love to see in a playground game. Wish there were better clips in the video- I imagine they're hard to come by.
Right on Whitney, I too saw him and followed him from the beginning, going back to the great ABA days. There will never be another like him, and anyone who says Kevin Durant, forget it, not even close, in style or efficiency, Durant takes way more shots and forced shots, Ice didn't do that, if he did, his numbers were outrageous already, they would have been absurd, not to mention, nobody then and today had to the insane arsinal and bag of shots, creativity only he had PERIOD..

Agree. Durant doesn't particularly remind me of Gervin either. I think it's the slender frame that brings in the comparison. Both smooth though.
@@Amick44 like I said,I followed ice from the beginning of his career, back when he and doc were teammates on the virginia squires, I followed and was a big aba fan, I have collected every aba game and footage that's out there, still looking for the last game of the season when Ice and Thompson were going for the scoring title,when they first came to the nba, both games,Thompson scored 73 to take the lead,his game was earlier, then ice played knowing he was behind and needed some 50 something to win, well he had that in the first half, he had 63 with 5 minutes to go in the third quarter and sat down the rest of the game! didn't stay in and keep going, that's another thing about him, he could have gotten maybe 80 or more, he was not selfish, go check it out, I'm hoping to someday get both of those games. You think any of the players today would sit after doing what he did, HELL NO
Lol.I did see Gervin in playground games on the East Side of Detroit when he was in his teens and i saw him as a high school player at Detroit Eastern High and at Eastern Michigan University.
He is easily one of the best scorers in NBA history. His career stats are nothing to scoff at.
Hes in my top 3. I saw him back in the day light up Ervings Sixers for +50 effortlessly. I was in attendance and in awe. I will never forget it.

Probably the coolest nickname ever in the four mayor professional sports leagues, the ICEMAN! Val Kilmer should pay royalties to George Gervin. What a prolific scorer. Klay Thompson broke his 33 points in a quarter but the Iceman quipped: "I did it w/o the three point line therefore the the record still is mine".
I watched him when he was in the ABA and he was the most entertaining players ever because you never knew what kind of shot he would take. He would hit seemingly impossible circus shots every time. Dr J was a dunker but Gervin was the man who always amazed with smooth but wacky shots. Btw, he could dunk with the best of them.
George Gervin has ben a hero of mine since I was a child. I was raised in San Antonio, Tx and my entire family were Spurs fanatics, and it all started thanks to the Iceman, and James Silas. Those two were the foundation of the Spurs culture and since them the Spurs have remained a model organization and have found amazingly selfless human beings to come and join the Spurs family. Robinson, Duncan, Johnson, Parker, Ginobili, Leonard, Bowen, Rose, Elliot, Popovich, Mills, Murray, and White - all of them have huge respect for those guys who really put the Spurs on the map all those years ago when they were just changing from the Dallas Chaparrals. They were not just great basketball players and basketball minds, they were amazing human beings who showed a lot of dedication and discipline in their pursuit of greatness, both on and off the court. They inspired generations of kids growing up in San Antonio as our only major sports team, and I count myself as one of those SA kids who grew up pushing myself that much harder to be like those players I idolized. Keep on pounding the rock, Jonny, you are an honorary Spur for this one. Welcome to the #SpursFamily, hermano.
He was a pure scoring machine.. Some defense, little play making ability..
That being said, he scored the basketball so phenomenally well, he didn’t need to do much else.. Great player..

I grew up in San Antonio and when the Spurs franchise came from Dallas I was a basketball fan. At the park by my house we use to imitation George’s finger roll and his bank shot. We use to imitated the way he shot the ball. I cried when they lose a 3-1 lead over the Washington Bullets when they were in the Eastern Conference.
In today's game with the lane wide open Gervin would kill. Old school player created the moves used by todays players. For you young people out there, watch videos of Elgin, Earl Monroe or Tiny Archibald, see how they would finesse through a crowded lane on a drive. That's when the league was packed with the most hall of fame centers that would break your arm when you drove at them! Todays player are standing on the shoulders of the creators of modern basketball!

I remember the last game of that 1978 season. David Thompson was another great scorer ...and along with Dr. J. brought legitimacy to dunking not just for show but for momentum and artistry. The ABA super stars ...namely the three guys I mentioned ....helped get the NBA ready for the Big Time. The ABA game was more exciting and high flying. I was a kid and grew up in Kentucky. Yes, I was a Kentucky Colonel fan and so followed both the ABA and NBA. Me and my friends kept up through box scores and radio and tv sports segments on local tv. We knew how close the scoring race was. At the time, the scoring those guys out up in the final games of that season rivaled the great dunking contest of the 1978 ABA All-Star game.
George Gervin was smooth and cold as ice. His finger role was the silkiest shot in the professional game. The only player I can think of today that has a similar shot is Steph Curry with his little scoop shot. I'm pretty sure at least in part he has modeled it after the finger role. You knew it was coming but you could not stop The Ice Man from scoring. One thing you forgot to mention. When the ABA and NBA first merged ....the Spurs were in the Eastern Conference and the Bulls were in the Western Conference. Yes it's true. This meant the Spurs had to get passed the 76ers and Dr. J. Another thing you did not mention. When Gervin was first a member of the Virginia Squires ...one of his teammates was Dr. J.
I talked to a former teammate a few times and according to him the play between these two in practice and pick up was as good as the games. Just thought I would throw that in. But yes I 100% agree Gervin was the man and belong in the talk of greatest ...Scorers ...of all time. In fact, Michael Cooper who was perhaps the best defender of the 1980's in the NBA has said the only guy more difficult to defend for him was Larry Bird. He has Gervin ahead of Michael Jordan. That says alot.
Yes Gervin and Thompson need more love. In my opinion the ABA statistics should be added to the NBA statistics. The fact is the merger of the two associations together with timing helped propel professional basketball to future success. In 1979, the NBA was behind both golf and bowling, yes bowling in tv ratings. I loved basketball but it gained popularity as a result of the rise of Magic and Bird. But Gervin and Dr. J and Thompson among other helped get the game to where it needed to be. Watch some old footage and you see time and time again the Ice Man working.

I was blessed as a kid to have season tickets, ON THE FLOOR, right next to the Spurs bench. He and The Bruise Brothers would routinely fall into our laps, spilling beer and snapping lit cigarettes, before we helped them up smacking them on their butts and cheering them back onto the court. Unreal experience!!
I did many times. You could buy the cheapest ticket thay had in the beginning then move down front.

Yep, yep, Great Tribute Video for The Great Iceman. Gervin is one of the Coolest guys I have ever observed, nicknamed the Iceman not only because of his game but also for his cool demeanor off the court as well. If you have not had a chance to watch Ic'es Hall of fame speech, I'd recommend you check it out, the Man Just oozes Cool.. He was the most dominant Scorer of my era, my time.
As a scorer, I would rate him in the top 10 and probably the top 5 Scorers of alltime, but I admit some bias as he is from my era. There is only 1 Iceman, Noone will ever match that. Watch his stuff and enjoy, a true showman, was the best at what he did. The Game and it's history not complete without "The Iceman" Thanks Ice, we remember. .
Thank you. My favorite player ever. Im a die hard Pacer fan since 69 but when I seen him at the old Field house on 38th st in Indianapolis... man I was fan ever since. And I believe Gervin and Silas 1 of the best back court duos ever.
One of my favorite ever commercials is the one with Tim Duncan practicing alone in a gym with a deep voice coming from the rafters; then Duncan tries a finger-roll and misses it, because the now-laughing voice is George Gervin's, and the Iceman has that move to himself.

Gervin had everything. He was a pure shooter. He could post up, he had hook shots with both hands. He was a expert free throw shooter and dunked on big men and of course he had the finger roll. There's no one like him then or now!

Don Novicki. I saw a lot of Fred Brown at the Kingdome while living in Seattle. As a Laker fan pre-Magic and after he appeared, I hated the Sonics. Brown was a novelty because he came in off the bench and lit it up from way outside, but would be just another 38 percent three-point shooter now. The problem then was the fact that his lower-percentage bombs were only worth two points. His value was in breaking down lockdown defenses, allowing other Sonics to penetrate to the hoop. The fans loved the man and he was a local institution long after he retired. There was a famous commercial there where he's shown getting into a cab in his fur coat and hat, and answers the cabbie's question about his destination with one word: "Downtown".
That was my team in the 70s Gus Williams Dennis Johnson, and Lonnie Shelton ...oh and Jack who had a mean outside shot...before what any of the big men are doing now
@@anthonyperkins1664 In 1979, I was so PO'd at the Sonics winning the title that I immediately took a ginormous piece of heavy industrial cloth I had, spray painted on it: "THE SONICS SUCK. A LAKER FAN"; and tied it to the cyclone fencing on the I-405 bridge near the Redmond offramp in Bellevue, WA. I recall that a WA State Patrol car cruised by with its emergency roof lights lit in celebration, surely missing my full message. When I drove by the next day, the sign was gone, but the rope I'd used to tie it up on the fence remained (and did so for years after). The next year I had my revenge: L.A. had signed Magic Johnson and the mighty Sonics fell in their playoff series, forever a one-time champ. 30 years later my love for the Lakers is beaten out of me, LeBron or no LeBron, and if I were Emperor, I would give a new Sonics team to Seattle; the folks up there have suffered enough. Oh, the Sonics' big guy back then was Jack Sikma, who looked to me like a 6'11" blonde zombie with a "bowl cut" who could rebound, set a mean pick, and shoot the long ball.
Saw Ice play live in the Hemisfair many times in the 70s and 80s. Effortless scorer.

I met him in 1985. I was playing college ball in Missouri. We had a game in Kemper arena. We shared locker rooms with the pros. Ice watched our game and I got to sit behind their bench while watching him roast Reggie Theus. No lie.

I loved watching the Iceman because he was so smoooth. His game was somewhat unorthodox but it was so effortless and nobody was stopping the Iceman. I remember watching Ice hit that "fanga roll" from 15 ft out which is crazy. I think Ice would be so effective in today's game because he could easily adapt to shooting 3s and the lane would open for his silky drives to the hole. I think a prime iceman would average at least 35 a game today.

So Johnny I consider myself truly blessed from a basketball stsndpoint. I grew up on talents like Pistol Pete, Sywalker, Dr.J., and Goerge Iceman Gervin, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Bernard King ect... I kid you not when I say that I have never seen anyone like these unique players and I am pretty certain I never will again. Ice man was thin, capable, silky smooth, incredibly accurate, uniquely individual, absolutely unstoppable and creative. He shot a finger roll from the foul line in the game with uncanny accuracy. In fact he was so good, you was surprised if he missed. He was still tough, durable and took no mess frim anyone because he WOULD catch you with one of thrm bony elbows. A true TOP 50.

Watching Gervin play in the late 70s early 80s was a treat. Man could release the ball from almost any position and convert.
Yeah, that was the thing that always struck me about watching Gervin score. Most shooters/scorers- even the good ones- need a consistency in going up straight, release point, etc. Gervin could come at the shot from virtually any angle but his release and touch was still spot on when it finally came out from those spindly spider man appendages and went toward the basket.
George was definitely one of the greatest basketball scorers of all time and the % shooting it was higher than most!!!! He is surely underrated !! nice piece to give due recognition.
The Iceman was truly an all time great. It was said of his shooting ability that each shot he took always looked as if it was to go in.

I totally agree that The Iceman should be considered in the top five all-time NBA scorers. We now live in San Antonio and I had the pleasure of meeting George. What a nice guy he is. Very quiet demeanor and also very humble.

I wore 44 on one of my game jerseys, he is one of my favorite all time players. Thank you George Gervin for making basketball fun for me. Sports, including basketball, has helped me in life and in becoming the person I am.

I was a Dr J fan but George was just as good,it was a competitive aera and every team had several stars not like today.
I won't say he invented the floater,but I can see it being taken from his highlights...He could really shoot the basketball as well and was a clutch scorer. Had the pleasure of seeing him play a few times in the ABA when we had a team in Memphis! He was incredible!! Finger roll from 10-12 feet at times!!!

I remember when Ice scored 53 in a half in his quest to overtake David Thompson. It would have been great if he played the whole game and see if he could've hit 90...

The iceman had the finger roll that no one has been able to duplicate. After listening to his career, he was definitely an all time great. A few other names that come to mind; Connie Hawkins, Pete Maravich, David Thompson and Bernard King. The problem is it is so very difficult to make a short list of greats because there were just too many to choose from.
Every time I watch your videos, I feel like you are trying to sell me something.
I mean naturally. I'm trying to convince the viewer thats he's as good as I'm claiming he is. I'm not gonna make a video saying "how good is ____" and then answer that by saying "he was exactly what you think.... have a good day" lol. I try to aim for players in the series who are either underrated, overlooked or forgotten

I loved watching him play so smooth and could get his shot off under pressure, and shoot off his wrong foot a lot with the scoop finger roll finish so skillful. I didn't get to see a lot of him in his day as I lived in Australia and we just were starved of NBA coverage for years. I eventually became a Drexler fan when coverage opened up over here and we got to see NBA games, I think because of the finger roll flip shots and unpredictability, just brilliant to watch. Thanks for covering this brilliant scorer and player, he played with Billy Cunningham (the coach) and big Artis Gilmore!
I put him on the Spurs Mt. Rushmore with Duncan, Robinson, Ginobili. Kawhi didn't play there long enough like those 4. I put him above Parker as well.

Among the 50’s, greatest I ranked George Gervin #6. Between Julious Erving and Pistol Pete Maravich.
George Gervin was such an scoring machine that his best defense was his offense.

I moved to SA in mid 1981. Saw the Spurs play once the 81-82 season. 4th quarter 17 sec to play, time out Spurs. After time out, ball in to Gervin who dribbles around until there is one second left, and then he lofts in an outside jumper for the win as time runs out. ICE.

Although a lifetime GS warrior fan (even thru the dismal years of the early 80’s) I remember attending an early winter game in Oakland in ‘83. My girlfriend and I had to see the Iceman! Naturally he didn’t disappoint! His scoring line that night? A scrimmage like 34 points in 3 quarters. With the game in the bag, the Spurs rested him the entire 4th quarter. Needless to say...we split early...fully satisfied from a hit of the one and only Iceman!🏀🙌🏽
The ABA was just wild, crazy fun to watch. As kids, my friends and I would hang around the Spurs players entrance where they parked their cars. (Security wasn’t like it is today) One of the players would always let us into arena to watch Ice finger roll his way to 30-40-50 points a night. He’s the best in my book.
The Iceman had such a unique style..different than anyone else that ever played in the NBA...I used to have his poster where he was sitting on large blocks of ice with his legs crossed..classic.

Loved the iceman. You are correct it is a travesty that he never gets mentioned as one of the greatest scorers in the NBA. One of my favorite players growing up. I used to play statomatic basketball and always picked the spurs because of that team's incredible scoring capability and of course having George Gervins card was amazing. Thanks for the memories. NBA was so much fun back then.
I`m 72 years old.I grew up on the East Side of Detroit.I watched George Gervin play on Detroit playgrounds and I watched him play organized basketball beginning at Eastern (renamed Martin Luther King) High School.To be sure George was a great scorer and he was smooth and graceful with a beautiful style on offense.But he had a few shortcomings.He was too thin and physically weak to be a force on defense or rebounding.Above all, his greatest shortcoming was that he never won a championship anywhere.Not in high school, college or the pros.
