i was playing basketball with some guys and we decided to have a free throw contest.see how many free throws we could hit out of 10. i made 9 of 10 and thought i had it won. this guy hit all 10 free throws. not even the rim. all net. and we all asked him where did he learn to shoot. and he told us his dad taught him. and he then said george gervin taught his dad how to shoot.

My jr high math teacher was an old coach of Ice. 1 summer he took the whole class to see Ice play in a closed gym game against some pros and streetball legends of Detroit. Mannnn Ice put on a show! Usually in games like this the small guards show out. But Ice is 6'7 and put on a million moves. Dunks, sweet ass reverse layups, pump fake shots, finger rolls from anywhere, turn around jumpers etc...

back when I was a kid and didnt know much about NBA legends from the 70's and 80's, I bought NBA 2K13 and the first Icon I unlocked was Iceman. I instantly was blown away by him in game. I started my research on him at that point and he was truly brilliant from what I watched.

Thanks for doing GG!!! The Bulls were my lifelong team (from the outer Chicago area) and the Spurs were my "West" team beginning in 1990 when The Admiral was drafted. GG is one of those 'forgotten' players. Shawn (sp), inlight of Brunson's new NYN playoff game scoring record, maybe we can get a Bernard King episode, or maybe Oscar Robertson (he was a BAAAD Man) or Dr. J, another 'forgotten' juggernaut. For those who never saw Dr. J, he was smooth, cool, and strong/showtime on the court, like 'Coffee Black' from 'Semi-Pro', but too cool to be goofy. Keep up the great work!

@@derrickgervin1060 , great days indeed! We were the kids and ball players from the Eastside of SA who found ourselves as students at the same school AL was first a counselor in 1975. We all became life long friends until this day. By 1982, several of us made it out the Eastside on scholarship to play ball in college and got degrees. Al was a source of wisdom, guidance and encouragement at a critical juncture for some young fellas. These same friends kept AL thru his sickness and period of hospice to his last breathe. Sometimes we all recount the times from those early days and experiences, as middle schoolers, and still they have been amongst the best days of our lives. George came to our school one morning and did layup line with the basketball team in the gym with the whole school in attendance. George was still shy in 1975. He was not the public speaker he is today. Kenon came as speaker to our athletic banquet. Of all the kids from the Eastside of SA, we had favor....All made possible by AL. Al impacted a lot of lives on the Eastside. He was given to his calling. Indeed great days and great times!

Kids have no concept of how unique and effortlessly smooth the Iceman was. One of a kind, never to be duplicated.

Very true. To this day I haven't seen anyone to replicate him or even who really reminds me of his playing style . Some mention Durant, but I really don't see the playing style similarities that much. I think it was more due to their long limbs and similar build.

@@alohawg KD has deeper range. But I'd say Ice is at least his equal as a shooter. Gervin had the 3-point line some years and some years he did not. And it wasn't used very often in his day anyhow.
But from 20 feet in, he could shoot with anybody.

I watched Gervin in High School in Detroit. He was so skinny his nickname was Twiggy. Long before the Ice Man.Of course he was City and State champion. I saw Spencer play too. Spencer's brother, Floyd, was George's teammate, if I remember correctly. Most underrated player in NBA history. He was unstoppable.
