Im 57 and from Detroit where Gervin is from as well. My jr high math teacher was an old coach of Ice. 1 summer he took the whole class to see Ice play in a closed gym game against some pros and streetball legends of Detroit. Mannnn Ice put on a show! Usually in games like this the small guards show out. But Ice is 6'7 and put on a million moves. Dunks, sweet ass reverse layups, pump fake shots, finger rolls from anywhere, turn around jumpers etc...
This is the content I love. I hate when everyone gets into who the greatest of all time was because it's stupid argument to begin with but most of all it distracts you from discussing all the other great players and enjoying what they brought to the game which allows you to appreciate it so much more.
If Gervin had better teams around him (like the Bulls in Jordan's era) he would be in the GOAT discussion. A lot of respect depends on championships, which isn't up to one player (the real GOAT is Wilt, but he played on mediocre teams).
Growing up in San Antonio in the 80s, the Iceman was IT! My hero, watching him play is like art, jazz, a thing of beauty. Coolest, smoothest man in basketball.
80's? I Was in SA in 1974 when Gervin arrived from Virginia Squires. They were our professional team in the ABA. In middle school, we all thought we were Ice on the black top.
I vividly recall George Gervin when he played for the Virginia Squires. But he was unstoppable when he was in his prime with San Antonio. My two favorite teams at that time were the Lakers and Washington Bullets. He destroyed them! I thought, is this guy ever gonna miss? Even when he missed, he barely missed! Love me some Ice Man Gervin! What a tremendous player!
Jerry West said he was one of the few players he'd pay to see. Julius Erving said Ice told him how much he appreciated watching him play. Dr J said "let me tell you I'm just as big a fan of him."
Watch him play against my Lakers and would be on the edge of my seat the whole time back in the day. He was the truth and for sure should be in MANY of these greatest ever conversations thats for sure.
I grew up 30 miles south of San Antonio and had the chance to watch George and Alex play against each other in the original Spurs arena in the early 80s. Two of the silkiest offensive players ever on the court. They looked like superheroes in person.
I got to see George Gervin in Atlanta vs the Hawks! Probably one of the smoothest players I’ve seen on the courts! The finger roll is & was legendary! No one has done it better!
"Ice" Nike poster was on my wall as a youth. He was an amazing scorer and so smooth. I remember George girvin and David Thompson going to the last game for the scoring title and they both lit it up. That is a long gone day for the league, unfortunately.
Growing up in Denver during the 70's, I saw ABA era George Gervin many times. If he played today, he would have developed a more reliable 3 point shot and simply excelled in today's game. Gervin was such a fluid scorer that he'd probably average 35-40 ppg. Gervin's game was tailor made for today's NBA.
I gave you a 👍, however, wakeup on the 3 pt thing. Gervin could shoot the 3 as well. Made 25 of 30, in street clothes, in shooting for his first contract with Virginia Squires
I remember when Ice and David Thompson had a race for the scoring title Thompson scored like 70 points and later that night Ice scored like 65 to win the title /
when they moved George Gervin to Guard, he put the league on Notice. that when his stardom took off. he went off for 63 points to win scoring title, David Thompson he for 73 but lost by percentage points. scoring avg 27./29.6/33.1/27.1/32.3/26,2/25.9 they just could not get past the Lakers in Western Conference.
I remember seeing Ice when I was a kid. He would come out in his shooting shirt/warm up with the word “ICE” on the back. Not his last name like his teammates but, “ICE”. He would get the quietest 50 points I ever saw.
Growing up watching late night basketball I have to favorite players, Dr. J. and the Iceman. I spent so many nights watching the late games. Great memories.
Yeah I love going back watching him play on here. I didn’t grow up with him. He had already retired years before I began watching basketball but the first time I saw his clips I was amazed with how smooth he was. He wasn’t fast nor was he slow he was like water just moving freely through rocks, stones and boulders and he shot the ball so gracefully with ease. It was like the ball to the basket was like an extension of his body. Definitely one of my favorite players.
George Gervin was DEFINITELY a once-in-a-lifetime, one-of-a-kind player!!! I’m a diehard Boston Celtics fan and the first poster I’d get if they still made it wouldn’t be of Bob Cousy or Bill Russell or John Havlicek or Dave Cowens or Larry Bird or Kevin McHale or Robert Parish. It would be of the “Iceman” sitting all in white on that block of ice dribbling those two white basketball. You wanna talk cool? You don’t ge no cooler than “Ice!"
Thank you The Ice Man one of the most overlooked players that played. A long with Jamal Wilkes both overlooked and the least talked about. Finally no whose the goat conversation. The acknowledgement of greatness and also Hall of Famers.
I still say he's the best mid-range scorer in NBA history. The guy was like a boneless sea creature...imagine an octopus playing basketball. So smooth. I mean, the finger roll goes without saying, but he also had a way of splitting defenders at the free throw line, like an eel sliding between two rocks for the score. Unreal and unique.
Ì grew up in Indianapolis and used t watch George when they would play the Pacers in the old ABA and him and James Silas would come in and light the Pacers up
The Gervin/Silas backcourt was amongst the best before Silas blew his knee out. Silas averaged 23 pts per game playing opposite George Gervin. It was Silas' #13 jersey that was the first to hang from the rafters.
Thank you Mr. David. I saw George Gervin play in Rome Italy against Banco di Roma in the early 80's. It was the end of his career but it was still great to see him. He was still very imaginative. All the other players clearly revered him. The Roman crowds seemed pleased and excited. I grew up on the streets of New York and I remember starting to shoot the finger roll, like the big kids and young men who played in tournaments. I played in The Rucker Tournament three summers with three different teams.

From 8th grade thru highschool, I idolized the Iceman! Watching #44 was like watching him in slowmo. THen in 85' when I graduated I saw a special player enter the league from North Carolina and I was like "UH OH" This when everyone was all about Dominic Wilkins

One of the greatest scores ever real smooth without sweating!!
"THE"
I love how Zeek gives Iceman his props for using the backboard, but Zeek had great touch on the backboard as well. I remember watching many games with George Blaha (Pistons announcer) saying, "Isiah off the HIGH glass and he hit it!"
From 8th grade thru highschool, I idolized the Iceman! Watching #44 was like watching him in slowmo. THen in 85' when I graduated I saw a special player enter the league from North Carolina and I was like "UH OH" This when everyone was all about Dominic Wilkins
I watched Gervin in High School in Detroit. He was so skinny his nickname was Twiggy. Long before the Ice Man.Of course he was City and State champion. I saw Spencer play too. Spencer's brother, Floyd, was George's teammate, if I remember correctly. Most underrated player in NBA history. He was unstoppable.
