I'm glad I've been putting off resealing the shower - I wasn't 100% on how to do it and would not have done it like this! Thank you for such a useful video, I'll be putting to practise this weekend.
@@mitre10nz It went great! What a change, I should have done it sooner. I'd add a tip that if you get a rough patch of silicon or lose your smooth line because you stopped and started again (like I did) if you get some turps on a gloved finger you can smooth it right out just by dabbing at it.
Hey, you guys should do a video on building a sleep out, since soon enough Kiwis won't need a consent to make one, amd with a housing crisis, there would be many being built
I see that you use turps at your final stage when spraying the silicon. Most other videos suggest dish washing liquid. Do you recommend turps ? Btw love your videos
Hi Jim, happy to hear you enjoy our videos. Turps works well and prevents the sealant from sticking to the smoothing tool, and leaves a nice clean finish. ^Matt
Turps , do you really need after the silicone, ,I understand before to remove super hard contamination, I been told to use soapy water Is thst ok or i should change to turpentine, Tool great idea 👍
The spray was turps (or Mineral Turpentine) - same as what we used on the rag for clean up after removing the old silicone. Glad you found the video useful! ^Meg
Kia ora Matt. Do you pull the tape off straight after smoothing it with the smoothing tool? Or do you let the silicone set for a while? If so how long?
Hey Ryan, you'd be best to take the tape of white the silicone is still wet because if it's dried, you might get bits of tape stuck to your end result! The drying time depends on the silicone itself so check the instructions on the container :) Cheers, ^James

It’s one of those skills that’s worth a little bit of practice, but easier than you expect once you understand how to control it all. 😊 Regarding turpentine substitute, that’ll vary as there can be quite a few differences between turpentine substitute products, some for example are designed for art oil painting with less odour or citrus added. So unless the substitute is a White Spirit or Mineral Spirit it’s worth checking the substitutes label or with its supplier. ^Nathan
We recommend using turps to clean up once you've removed the old silicone as this will help get rid of any extra little bits that you can't see - both old silicone and and residual grime & grease - giving you a cleaner surface to start with. When you're spreading the silicone, the turps helps your silicone applicator tool glide on easier, making for a smoother application ^Matt
Hi there, there is Turps in this spray bottle - this is to help with removing the excess and also with gliding the silicon on nice and smooth as well. ^Ian
Why cant you just apply the silicon on top of the old one why do you have to rewove the other one completely? Why cant i just put this new one on top of the old as long as i clean it first???
You could but it wouldnt look as good, plus unless you clean it all out properly you'd trap in the mold and moisture that you'd nornally get rid of before applying new silicon.
Brilliant tutorial, well explained and easy to follow. Thank you so much.
Thank you! Great tutorial - I feel much more confident.
Glad to hear it! ^Matt

Good question! You need to remove the old silicone, as the new silicone will not adhere to it properly. ^Meg
Wrong it will. Provided a good bead. A good clean with methylated spirit is fine. Good to go.
