Hi, I found your sermons a couple weeks ago and your preaching is awesome, in that it seems to be totally lined up with the Word of God, but today I was watching this sermon and Jeff was talking about people who claim Jesus(who is God Almighty) spoke to them, and sounded like he was claiming that isn't possible, but that's wrong according to Scripture, 4 Times in John ch 10 Jesus said, My sheep heary.voice and they know me.
I was lost and fairly happy with it, and then in Oct 1991 I had read some in a Bible my late grandmother gave me and I did that whenever I thought of her, but on that day(Oct 1st) I noticed that the bible isn't a normal book, so I sat down and purposed in my heart to read and find out what the mystery was, it was a struggle to say the least to understand what was being said, so I started in Matthew and I would read half a verse and think about it, then read the other half of the verse and think about it, this went on for a while and then all of a sudden I was reading anymore, but Jesus was speaking, telling me what to do, also at the same time the words came up off the page a couple inches, I flipped back to see where it started, but couldn't find it, but when I heard Jesus's voice I was changed Immediately, the things I loved before hearing Jesus speak I now despise and the things I despised before hearing Jesus speak I now love, and Jesus has been with me ever since.
Look in Jude verse 9 and tell me what the devil did with the body of Moses?
What led me to see this was in one night I had a dream 3 times and here is the dream.
(We all know in the Hebrew language things are repeated for importance).
Something wonderful had happened in the world, people were giving send gifts and were very happy, and I woke up, then I fell back to sleep and saw the same dream again, world wide rejoicing, giving gifts, total happiness, I woke and then fell back to sleep the third time, same dream again, world wide rejoicing and happiness over what had happened, then I heard someone say, It's Moses, when I heard the news I was happy also, and still dreaming I decided to go to work and tell everyone the good news, but when I got to work and angel of the Lord came running towards me with his left arm raised shouting this:
DON'T FOLLOW MOSES, MOSES IS THE BEAST!
We all know God(Jesus)is the Sovereign God of all things, why would someone preaching say God is not talking to anyone nowadays?
      Do not limit God.
      It's not healthy for you.

I’ve wondered this as well. My theory is that it’s easier to just believe that one man has all the answers. If there is one prophet or modern-day apostle, then all you have to do is listen to what he says instead of having to do the hard exegesis and prayerful study.

That’s exactly correct and why you shouldn’t be a Reformed Protestant. Scripture says we should seek Salvation with fear and trembling. How can you be the judge of Scripture or Durbin or any individual and comply with its commands. We can’t that’s why God gave us through the Holy Spirit on Pentecost his Church and has never abandoned it. Roman Catholics abandoned it, Luther and Calvin and Knox…… and all their after affected have abandoned it but the Holy Spirit never did and never will and the proof is in Scripture if you resist quote mining and truly honor all,of it in its complete, complex and cultural context that can only be provided by and in the Body of Christ.

It's nearly impossible to get them out of it because it seems they don't even realize they are doing it. They get so upset if you try to catch them on it. Yet those same people are often the ones who struggle with reading their Bibles on a regular basis. It's maddening. I'm not sure how to even deal with people like this anymore.

What amazes me is that in the recent debate: White x Horn on Sola Scriputra, Horn had to dismiss and sometimes even diminish or almost deny scripture, specially th NT, saying stuff like: how do we know the canon? Or how the church fathers knew the canon? Implicitly saying that no one knew whats was the real revelation, in order to afirm RCC bizarr tradition doctrines.
And his whole argument was: show me a verse that explicitly says scripture is the sole rule of authotity for God's revelation. And then, when Dr. White showed them the verses where Jesus plainly states that scripture is the rule of authority, he would deny it. I mean, he denied Jesus's own words to make his point.

Courtesy of Jimmy Akin (ex Protestant turned Catholic) ‘Practical Problems of Sola Scriptura’
Simply stated, the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura (“Scripture alone”) teaches that every teaching in Christian theology (everything pertaining to “faith and practice”) must be able to be derived from Scripture alone. This is expressed by the Reformation slogan Quod non est biblicum, non est theologicum (“What is not biblical is not theological,” cf. Dictionary of Latin and Greek Theological Terms: Drawn Principally from Protestant Scholastic Theology, Richard A. Muller, Baker, 1985).
An essential part of this doctrine, as it has been historically articulated by Protestants, is that theology must be done without allowing Tradition or a Magisterium (teaching authority) any binding authority. If Tradition or a Magisterium could bind the conscience of the believer as to what he was to believe then the believer would not be looking to Scripture alone as his authority.
A necessarily corollary of the doctrine of sola scriptura is, therefore, the idea of an absolute right of private judgment in the interpretation of the Scriptures. Each individual has the final prerogative to decide for himself what the correct interpretation of a given passage of Scripture means, irrespective of what anyone-or everyone-else says.
If anyone or even everyone else together could tell the believer what to believe, Scripture would not be his sole authority; something else would have binding authority. Thus, according to sola scriptura, any role Tradition, a Magisterium, Bible commentaries, or anything else may play in theology is simply to suggest interpretations and evidence to the believer as he makes his decision.
Each individual Christian is thus put in the position of being his own theologian.
Of course, we all know that the average Christian does not exercise this role in any consistent way, even the average person admitted by Fundamentalists to be a genuine, “born again” believer.
There are simply too many godly grannies who are very devout in their faith in Jesus, but who are in no way inclined to become theologians.
Not only is the average Christian totally disinclined to fulfill the role of theologian, but if they try to do so, and if they arrive at conclusions different than those of the church they belong to-an easy task considering the number of different theological issues-then they will quickly discover that their right to private judgment amounts to a right to shut up or leave the congregation.
Protestant pastors have long realized (in fact, Luther and Calvin realized it) that, although they must preach the doctrine of private judgment to ensure their own right to preach, 👉they must prohibit the exercise of this right in practice for others👈, lest the group be torn apart by strife and finally break up.
It is the failure of the prohibition of the right of private judgment that has resulted in the over 20,000+ Christian Protestant denominations listed in the Oxford University Press’s World Christian Encyclopedia.
The disintegration of Protestantism into so many competing factions, teaching different doctrines on key theological issues (What kind of faith saves? Is baptism necessary? Needed? Is baptism for infants? Must baptism be by immersion only? Can one lose salvation? How? Can it be gotten back? How? Is the Real Presence true? Are spiritual gifts like tongues and healing for today? For everyone? What about predestination? What about free will? What about church government?) is itself an important indicator of the practical failure of the doctrine of private judgment, and thus the doctrine of sola scriptura.

I confess I have played the knowledgeable fool instead of the wise discipline when engaging with Catholics. I've cloaked my resentment and bitterness in a Christian garb. I've let my tongue run loose, causing more contention than harmony. I haven't been genuinely open to hearing their positions. I've closed my ears to their arguments. I've used God's truth in order to shame and belittle, instead of showing love. I've brought further separation between my fellow image bearers.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21):
When we are children we are in the hands of others, but when we are adults we are to “put away childish things” (1 Corinthians 13:11). As adults, we are fully responsible for what we say and do. Most people blame others for their misfortunes, not realizing that everything they think, feel, say, and do will completely determine what takes place in their life. The wages of the tongue that speaks evil is death, which ultimately leads to hell (Romans 6:23). There are many types of death: death of peace, happiness, love, and eventually the soul.
However, those who belong to God will speak life in everything they do. When bad things happen, look to yourselves because there is unrepented sin in your life. Repent, come to the Lord, and God will forgive-and your lives will turn for the better. Amen.

Likewise, the first 8 verses of Chapter 1 of Paul's epistle are written to and about the Church of Rome. This is what is says:
1 The Church of Rome's faith was " *spoken of throughout the whole world* (same as all nations, "Catholic") ". Rom.1:8
      2. God is Paul's witness *Paul prayed without ceasing* for the Church of Rome.*

      3. Paul extended ' *Grace and Peace from the Father and Lord Jesus Christ to the Church of Rome* . (Rom. 1: 7)

I believe that Jeff has a fundamental misunderstanding of how Catholics/Orthodox view the Church Fathers. As I understand it, they acknowledge that not any single Father got everything right. They also don’t look for (or expect) them to be unanimous. Rather, the Fathers serve as an authority where a consensus is found among them, as with the apostles at the Council of Jerusalem recorded in Acts. And, the Orthodox don’t separate scripture from tradition. To them, scripture is a part of what is called Holy Tradition, which they consider the authority.

    • @mistertracey1

Yes, but the point is that if you claim to be the one true church because of a link to the church fathers, well, protestants have that too. They just don't claim to be exclusive as do the others.

No, the Fathers are not an authority ONLY when they agree with one another, that is something I have to disagree with you on. The Fathers do however give us a picture of the beliefs of the Early Church and yes, we do have to lend them some weight when they appear to have the majority sharing a certain belief. But ultimately it's Church Councils and not Church Fathers that decide Church doctrine. Though they absolutely give us important insight into Church practice and belief.

Actually to demand that all denominations see eye to eye on everything in scripture is to demand that someone has ultimate authority to interpret scripture for everyone else. Protestants misunderstanding scripture or disagreeing about exactly what scripture teaches actually says nothing about whether or not scripture is the ultimate authority. People misunderstand things all the time, but the point is that the bible is the authority, not some other person or group or whatever else.

"the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints" which you refer to as mormons. not any of yours. consider yourself schooled. the church of god in the time of the prophets, was built on the foundation of the prophets, i. e. upon those doctrines and doctrinal truths deliver'd by them. the church of god under the new testament, is built not only on the foundation of the prophets, but of the apostles, Rev. 21:14. this is precisely what paul affirms in ephesians 2:20 where he says that the church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, christ jesus himself being the cornerstone” (cf. rev. 21:14; also 1cor. 3:10-11 in context). the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints is the ONLY church today built on a foundation of apostles and prophets. anti-mormons are teaching a false gospel (just like all protestants). for that matter, catholics as well.

“Conflict in how do I know?” Mormons, Koresh……….Calvin……..Jeff Durbin. Every practitioner of Sola Scriptura offer interpretation. All Reform apologist admit it. Just think of how often Jeff Durbin says “what Jesus is saying here is” or “what the word of God is saying to me is”. There is no difference. The Body of Christ that wrote, compiled, selected and made Scrioture Canon by inspiration of the Holy Spirit also provided the interpretation by the same inspiration. The resounding voices of the many, the, Apostles, Apostolic Fathers, Church Fathers, Saints and Martyrs that provided canon also provided interpretation.
On the Deuterocanonical books. When Jesus and the Apostles spoke of and quoted from them in the New testament they made them Canon. Made them Scripture by your own definition. If they were read and used and quoted by our Lord and the Apostles why not us.
Origen is the perfect example of your great error and the heresy of Sola Scriptura. Origin was declared a heretic at the second Council of Constantinople in 553. He and all his works declared anathema, why? Because every word he spoke and wrote was heresy. Not remotely. Origin was one of if not the most prolific writer producing between 4,000 and 6,000 written works. The Church the Body of Christ declared him a Heretic because the things that are Orthodox are expressed elsewhere by others without sifting through all the heretical stuff. That is the same process that the Church the Body of Christ selected Orthodox books for inclusion as Canon and those that were Heretical as a matter of Tradition defined, explained and practiced in Scripture. Accepting Sola Scriptura actually denies Scripture itself.

I am a Catholic and I love Pastor Jeff Durbin. He is on the front lines fighting for Christ and fighting for life. Much respect to him. However, sola scripture is a fallacy. Christ created a church, not the Bible. He gave the Church the authority to bind and loose. With authority from Christ and the oral traditions handed down, the Church defined the Bible. Therefore, the magisterial authority and traditions were needed to define the canon of the the Bible. This is just fact.
