    that umbrella stand used to carry coal for the fireplace - back in the early sixties, when we still had coal stoves, every household would have one of these (be it less fancy ones, lol), but then we switched to gas and now everyone has radiators, so...

    • @ImForgivenToo
      @ImForgivenToo 2 года назад +9

      that is what I was thinking too, since it has 2 handles....

    • @designorganize2608
      @designorganize2608 2 года назад +20

      I totally agree. In Britain, they are called coal 'scuttles'. You fill them, keep them beside the fireplace, then when the fire gets low, you pour more coal from the scuttle into the fireplace. Makes a nice umbrella stand though.

    • @tonibaena7046

      Interesting 🤔🤔

    • @micbarker6256
      @micbarker6256 2 года назад +5

      Yeah, I was also thinking that old antique umbrella stand looked suspiciously like an old antique coal scuttle 😄

    • @aanon5716
      @aanon5716 2 года назад +3

      @@micbarker6256 it definitely is a coal scuttle per my british grandmother. the lower handle is the give away. you held the 2 handles to pour out the coal. she still has one very similar that she has on her porch with flowers now. it was used by her grandparents & so on...its odd that business that beth bought it from listed it as an umbrella stand. i would have listed it as an antique coal scuttle that makes a perfect umbrella stand or flower pot, etc...at any rate, its charming as a decor piece. think about all that work & coal dust back then.

    The entry turned out so pretty! I would be worried the fabric panel would get in the way of function.

  • @emalinel
    @emalinel 2 года назад +129

    Hmmm I personally wouldn't put the fabric panel. The entryway is so small and you already have all this natural wood and jute and other neutral brown tones to soften the look. I think adding the fabric panel would draw the attention away from all the natural lighting you already have coming from your front entry way and such. Plus the door is statement in itself! It's a wonderful dark color to contrast with the walls and all the furnishings you put up :) If you wanted some other decoration there, I'd suggest some sort of painting or piece you can put above the door to welcome you guys when you come into/leave the house.

      I, too, thought it was a coal scuttle. But then wondered “why do I even know what a coal scuttle is?” LOL. Amazing the tidbits our minds hang onto especially when the location of keys and eyeglasses remain elusive !!! BEAUTIFUL home. Thanks for sharing.

      This is the third coal scuttle I've seen this week, second in a French vlog and the other was an Oregon based channel on an antique daytime lol That's how we know what it is 🤔😉

    • @marlenebos6140
      @marlenebos6140 2 года назад +1

      Must be one used for a big cook stove which needed quite a bit of coal. The scuttle would nicely pair with the oven. The handles of the stove and the protective bars around the stove, were also often made from copper. In this way the functional parts enhance the design.

    Beth you can add a fabric curtain to the door window, also good for privacy reasons.

It’s really nice and I cannot believe what a difference a cabinet (I would have taken the trouble to haul it back to the car too), mirror and hooks could transform a space. The picture in the kitchen is perfect on that wall and from what I can see, the main area of the house looks complete. You have reached the point of cozy and inviting without competing with the views of the garden. Cannot wait for a grand tour.

    I so enjoy watching your life in France! Your home decorating skills are impressive so say the least. And the food is a way of life there & to be treated very seriously which you are! Makes me want to reread “A Year in Province” or “Province, 1970”!!!!!

      Ha! Yes that's one of my favorite books. I reread it every few years and laugh harder each time. It's somehow funnier to me as the years wear on and I get to know the French culture better ha!

    I like your channel a lot 💜The umbrella stand is actually a coal carrying bucket. You fill it up, bring it in and hold up with the handle at the bottom part and pour the coal in the stove. My great grandmother had one of these. 😄💜

    Lovely finds! I may be wrong, but the “umbrella stand” though, I think it originally was a pot commonly used to scoop and carry coal pieces from the deposit into the house. It is a beautiful piece and it’s genius to use it for umbrellas 👍🏻😍

    The house just keeps getting better and better. I love the entrance. You managed to get a warm and cozy feel without being too cluttered. Perfect! I see what you're saying about covering the electrics. My first thought was to build a box around it that matched the wooden bench and make it large enough to have a shelf or two inside for storage. But...then I thought yes, you're right...a curtain would soften the frame. Lol! Oh my goodness... you must be having a blast seeing everything come together so well. ♥♥♥

      Aww thank you! I'm so glad you think so! Funny enough it's kinda all growing on me and the more I think about it, I'll probably just leave it as is! I can envision it driving everybody nuts having to pull the curtain back to open the door ha!

      I was going to say that it would make me crazy! Imagine coming in out of the rain on a blustery day, opening the door and having the curtain blow around, get wet and stick you while you try to wrestle it out of the way to close the door! And it would cause a heating/cooling problem as the thermostat would always read the temp as warmer. The thermostat would run the a/c too much in summer and not enough in winter, so you’d freeze all the time.

    First time seeing this. I love it. Her style is beautiful and she mixes and matches old and new and it create a lovely theme.I agree with another comment in that it’s a great idea to have ‘an umbrella stand’ which was a coal scuttle. It was filled with coal and the handles were used to empty the coal into the fire. Really enjoyed this☺️

    What a wonderful adventure! I love the entry hall piece and the Louis Philippe mirror is perfect. You can never go wrong with that combination! I can see a little gold drapery rod, very simple, over that door with a sheer white drape that you can push off to the side. Of course you would have to put the rod further out from the door width so you could push it back away from the frame, but it would still camouflage those little devices at the side of the door. A pretty little rod and some simple rings would be tres chic! Thanks for taking us along! Can't wait to hear what Mr. Ruggiero thinks of your lovely home. The baskets are FABULOUS hanging there!!

    Sooo excited to see it come together! So precious and charming and such a labour of love💛 I cant wait to stay there.😉 If finding hooks is a challenge I love to use vintage door knobs to hang tea towels or hats etc. The glass knobs are lovely or the hand painted ceramic ones. Anyway, I just adore your home and I love the idea of the ticking swag over the door.💛

    Hi Beth. Love the new look foyer. I personally would leave the door area of the wall as it is. I like how it frames the outside yard. Hanging something over or around the door might take away the simplicity and beauty of the door. Maybe a long, narrow painting over the baskets might bring the color your looking for. Thanks for sharing.

    • @EntertainingWithBeth

      Yes I agree! I'm actually liking the simplicity of nothing over the door. I like the idea of the painting though over the baskets! Always room for one more French painting! 😂 LOL!
