    This so-called "plumber" down in San Antonio did some suspicious "plumbing" repairs using SharkBites and of course, they failed and caused major flooding throughout the home. The homeowner is MAD, let me know in the comments what you would've done if this happened to you.

    I agree SharkBite isn't the ideal thing to use long term, but the reason they blew out when he turned the water on is that the guy that installed them was as good at that as he was at finding the leaks. It's likely that his main qualification as a plumber was that he had the skills to log into their contractor website and sign up.

      The issue with shark bite connectors is you can have professionals who are thorough and care use them to great success, and you have novice/complete idiots who use them with incompetence; and sometimes the only way to tell which person did it is to take it completely apart. They also cost more than any other solution, so is the person who did it just a scammer, doesn’t have the money to buy sustainable tools for less costly per fitting connections, someone who doesn’t know what they are doing, or was it a temporary fix where the professional was not paid/allowed to come back and do the real fix a few days later.

      Sharkbites work fine when installed properly. Don't use them behind walls. Roger said these "Sharkbite caps now blow apart and start leaking" lol. Then they weren't installed properly. And they didn't blow apart, that's ridiculous. Only deep freeze ice formation will force a Sharkbite off a pipe. It is likely the plumber in question is a hack. But Roger is not recounting sufficient details to the story, and smearing push-on fittings for fun. They have suitable uses and work fine when installed properly.

    Roger, I'm a senior claims agent for a company that administers home warranties. In the past I carried a Journeyman cert for plumbing/pipefitting. I can state categorically there is NO WAY we would have approved that work at all. Isolation is one thing but cutting and capping every line like that w/o visual? Plus, if you aren't set up FOR leak detection, I don't even know how they were dispatched. This would have ended up with our liability folks as it's quite obvious damages were caused by the service provider here.

    I'm not a plumber, but my grandfather was and he taught me a lot. I've done a lot of work as an electrician with my brother. The first rule is only cut the bare minimum. If this was my house the second i saw an 8ft cut anywhere I'm calling up a lawyer to have ready with a lawsuit for both the home warranty as well as the "plumber". Rodger I owned a mechanical company in DFW for about 25 years until I retired. I came across many “ home warranty company service providers “
    Most have enough knowledge to hurt somebody, and the customer thinks they have an insurance policy not a warranty. The warranty company is only trying to get out of the repair as cheaply as possible because the homeowner only has enough coverage as their yearly payments, and the homeowners in most cases aren’t aware the limits of the cost.

    • @bobbygetsbanned6049
      @bobbygetsbanned6049 Год назад

      Yeah home warranties are a scam, the warranty company has one purpose, to make money. So you know it's costing you more since you have to pay for the repair plus the warranty companies overhead and profit. Way better off just saving money for when problems arise.

    As a 2nd year apprentice (just completed my first year and running my calls with my company now) I can tell you that if I go somewhere and see shark bite caps I’m IMMEDIATELY changing those out. If I leave a house and it has shark bite fittings and the customer has a leak….it would be my fault for not getting things squared away. I had the opposite experience, when the inspector was told that a homeowner (me) did the work, he signed off on it, saying that professionals cut corners and have to be watched like a hawk; that homeowners have a stake in the work and try to do it correctly. I have seen it both ways - a homeowner using a ground wire as a hot wire, a plumber telling me that I could bury a conduit under 6 inches instead of 18 because the inspectors never dig it up.
      Our neighbor was a building inspector - after signing off on a garage floor (concrete with mesh), he had forgotten something and went back to the job site to find the contractor putting the now-rolled up mesh into his pickup truck. After confirming he removed the mesh from the garage, the inspector pulled ALL of the inspections for that contractor for garage floors and ordered him to cut out a 12" square to prove the mesh was there - it never was. The contract was sued by a dozen people, the garage floors had to be removed and rebuilt at his cost.

    I changed a guys external tankless after the big freeze. He asked me to look at a shower while I was there. I had lots of people with shower issues because they had pressure balancing valves and no hot water. However this guy said his had problems prior to the freeze and his warranty company had sent two separate service companies out and neither of them could figure it out. It was a moen positemp. I waited until the heater was in so I could properly diagnose it. I can’t remember what the issue was but the solution was just to replace the positemp cartridge just like it is with 99% of the issues with shower valves. It seemed to me like they just showed up to collect the service fee. Our company has worked for a couple of home warranty companies. I always hated those jobs. I spend more time on the phone with them than I do actually working. One was Amazon home warranty and it was okay. The other I don’t remember the name but the call center was in India so it was difficult to get anything done. This might be unethical as I’m contracted by those companies but I’d tell customers not to use them. I had a couple that said they don’t pay to replace anything only repair so I had to repair a 14 yr old water heater in an attic. Another one had an extremely old
    toilet where the tank had broken. I ended up not doing it because the guy could fix things himself but was just going to use the warranty company to save money. I told him he’d come out better if he just bought a toilet and replaced it because I would have to make a trip out there, “diagnose” a visibly broken tank, then not fix anything because I can’t buy another tank and they won’t pay for replacement so they were basically useless.

    I've been the second opinion before behind home warranty contractors and subs. A woman was told she needed a whole new HVAC system when in fact all that was wrong was a small chaffed wire that needed to be repaired. Now I get calls from their friends and neighbors when HVAC work is needed. Honesty will actually cover up bad work better than lying. I personally suck at drywall work. So, I don't cut into walls unless I'm making a new spot for a line-set or electrical and don't have to repair. If major drywall needs to come down, I am up front with the customer and tell them a secondary professional is best to handle the drywall.

      I work with home warranty companies I do think they are a ripoff to the customer most will only pay so much for say a slab leak they will only pay upto $500 to administer a leak detection, open up slab and repair leak. It takes more than that amount to repair a slab leak the home owner will have to pay for the rest. But there is one home warranty company I know of that will pay for it all but you have to have the right coverage

      We had a home warranty through "Americas Choice" or something like that. Their thing was that you get to choose who works on the house. When I made a claim they sent very specific instructions to "not inform the plumber that it is a home warranty until they are at your house." Huge red flag. They tried to give me $300 for a water heater replacement, and then argued with the plumber about the age of the water heater.

He told me it was a drain in the slab and it had to be jack hammered up. after jackhammering out 3 drains and the clog not going away, he proceeded to scope out further and found the pipe exiting the house (under my sidewalk) was collapsed and would cost an additional 8k in addition to the 6.5k for the mistake in the basement. GREAT Company. lifetime warranty on their work. And now they refuse to warranty the broken backflow preventor they installed and broke when they rescoped the line a year later (last week). I used to work for a company that did work for warranty companies ( 15 yrs ago ) and I didn't like it then. It's nothing but a huge headache.
    This is why I love working for myself. I don't work for warranty companies. All of my customers are word of mouth. I'm honest, fair, I do each and every job as it were my own house or my mother's house, and I let my work speak for itself.

    If you have a small slow leak and it’s in the right place drywall may not tell. That is why there is a $50 tool that all plumbers and most contractors should have; it’s called a moisture meter. You procedurally walk through the home, starting at any known walls with plumbing in them, and start checking the levels. If there is a leak, the moisture level may not be visually noticeable but it will show a decent jump in moisture within the materials.

    Great video topic Roger. 2-3 years ago my son and his family were at our house for dinner. They went home and found water leaking in the basement laundry room ceiling (they have a Tri-level) and he called me. I told I’ll come one over. He said no I’ll turn the water off, come over in the morning. I went over, didn’t find any obvious leaks. Turned the water back on and walked the house. I heard water leaking in the wall behind the toilet. I pulled the toilet, cut open the wall, fixed the leak, dried out the framing and replaced the drywall and reinstalled the toilet. Where I live there is only 3 companies I would call for a plumbing problem. But if you can fix it yourself and can do it probably why not??? And I don’t like shark bites.I made sure my son and daughter both know where the water shutoff is, the gas shutoff, the furnace and water heater as well as the breakers. They both can do basic home maintenance and basic service on their cars. When they have a plumbing job to do I have always referred them to your channel. And they know when they are in over their head and to call a plumber, etc…

    Hello plumbing family. I have a question about an 3 handle valve for my shower.
    I picked up a pfister yesterday. Seems to be ok for $115 at HD. The old Moen valve had 2 proprietary fittings on hot & cold.. im just realizing. Some weird union joints they don’t sell at any store.
    I tried to use a 1/2 inch female adapter on hot & cold side.. I keep getting a leak out top of both 1/2 inch female adapters. Of course no leaks where I solderd below it…..
    I’m using plumbers tape. No reason this should have a leak. Are you able to attach a sharkbite over previously solder’d copper?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    I think the original problem is that the homeowner didn't know their plumber. The biggest joke on the internet is internet reviews.
    I would argue the biggest scam are these plumbing companies that advertise a $99 drain cleaning but tell their mechanics-- um, salespeople-- to not leave the house without huge up sales that are unnecessary for the customer. They then compensate for bad reviews by investing huge sums in marketing people who are paid for nothing more than cleansing the reviews...all of which contributes to needing more and more money from even the most basic calls
    Good luck finding me online, and even if you do, I doubt I will take the job because people who don't know you are the worst customers ever. Word of mouth will always be superior to internet, and frankly I don't do plumbing to get rich

      Huge mistake. Today, marketing is critical and online/social media marketing is king. If you don't have a website, I ain't hiring the company. If there are spelling errors or a BS fluff website that has no real info, I ain't hiring the company. I want 4-4.5 star review profiles. That's how you can be comfortable knowing that the reviews are organic. 200 5 star reviews with 0 issues is usually people being offered an unwritten perk for a good review. I want to see a mixture where 6 people are extremely happy and overwhelmed with satisfaction, 3 are regularly satisfied and glad that they hired the company and will do so again, and 1 is annoyed or unhappy with some specific thing that is an understandable human error. I want to see 6 people super happy that an HVAC tech came out and honestly told them with a smile that the cap was bad or the condenser was dirty and charged a $75 service call fee for the 10 minute fix and left without scare tactics or ripoffs. 3 people who say the tech was 10 minutes late but did the same as above and they would call him back next time for sure. And finally, 1 person who said the tech installed starting components for a scroll that had a long line set and only 220v supply, but the 6 year old Chinese run cap failed a month later (not his fault) and the new start cap ran the compressor off the start winding alone and burned up the compressor leading to an expensive and messy burnout repair job. That right there is the profile of a good, honest, hard working tech. You can test a run cap and pass it one month, and the next it has shorted internally and is a direct passthrough which is not the tech's fault but the customer sees it that way regardless. If you don't do plumbing to get rich, whatever. I never met anyone who said "I don't want any extra money. I'm good with what I have. Extra money is not my thing."

    I have a very small house and none of the plumbing goes into wall cavities, all through my crawl space. I am not a plumber, just DIY homeowner, and I plumbed this entire home, including a sediment filter, water softener, tankless hw heater and all the water supply lines with pex and sharkbite/quick fittings and have no issues at all.
    I can't stress enough that I'm not a professional plumber, I don't expect these fittings to be perfect for 20 years. I do expect that I will have some leaks eventually, especially over winter, that I will need to tend to. But I live in the middle of nowhere and do all of this myself. I don't have the time or money to become a professional plumber and it wouldn't make sense because all of my water lines are in my crawl space or along my basement wall right next to a drain. If something goes wrong, it won't destroy my house.
    If I was doing any plumbing inside of walls, I would without a doubt purchase a crimping tool and learn how to use the pex crimping rings.

    I’ve been in the plumbing field for around 26 years, I’ve done all aspects of residential plumbing including leak detection, we used various methods to locate slab leaks but mostly audio, sonar and therm imaging with varying levels of accuracy in each method. Accurately locating leaks under slabs takes skill and specialized equipment, I do not do it anymore. How ever blindly hacking into walls is stupid, if there is a leak in the wall the sheet rock will usually be wet and knocks differently. Floors would be wet. I have seen a few leaks though that ran down the pipe right into the slab and nothing collected above the floor. We have had jobs where a lot of holes were poked in walls for the endoscope before we found what we were looking for. I’ve probably about seen it all, lots of shoddy work, lots of shark bite repairs, hose clamps, flex seal, duct tape, jb weld. I will say shark bite fittings are great for testing or very temporary repairs. We once used dozens on one mobile home to hold the plumbing for a few weeks until we could get in there and do a proper re pipe. Gotta love that old poly butylene

    It's not so much the sharkbite that's the issue here. It's that he put them on K copper, which Sharkbite says they are not to be put on. K copper can be easily out of round, and the slightly larger diameter of the pipe can damage the o-ring seal in the fitting. Sharkbites are not always bad, but you must know where and when it is right and reasonable to use one.

    • @MrDflores1
      @MrDflores1 2 года назад +1

      Type K copper is the same outside diameter as Type L, or M.
      Type K has a thicker, stronger wall, why would it be more easily out of round than other types of copper?
      Since type K is thicker, that means it's heavier per foot, which means it's more expensive, why would they be using type K in residential plumbing where type L would be more than adequate?
      Are you sure you know what you're talking about?

    • @dnelson9529
      @dnelson9529 2 года назад +1

      Both L and K copper can be obtained in either hard drawn or annealed. Hard drawn K copper is very rarely used either above or below ground. Annealed K copper is very commonly used in underground installation. Sharkbite's are not to be used on annealed copper due to it being slightly larger outside diameter, and that it can very easily be deformed due to bending. Hard drawn K copper is very difficult to bend

    • @MrDflores1
      @MrDflores1 2 года назад

      @@dnelson9529 So what you mean to say is that the pipe being annealed is the issue, and not because it's type K.
      Type k has the *exact* same OD as Type L or M, that's why the same fitting works- assuming everything is within tolerance.
      If that's what you meant, than I would have to agree with you.

    • @dnelson9529
      @dnelson9529 2 года назад

      @@MrDflores1 try putting a 1/2" sharkbite on first on hard drawn and then annealed copper and see what happens. Then take a sharbite that is meant for PB pipe and do the same thing. It will be loose and leak on the hard drawn, and then fit tight on the annealed. The OD is not the same. But even if the PB sharkbite fits, the annealed can be out of round and not seal to the o-ring. Most of the charts showing diameters and wall thickness are inaccurate, and also do not differentiate between hard drawn and annealed.

    At our previous house the tree grew into the main water line and caused a leak. The city notified the current home owner that the meter showed constant usage. Contractor came out with a mini ex and started digging without locating utility lines first. The plumber had dug into a 2” gas line that shut down part of the subdivision. Fire dept, gas company, and a bunch of others showed up. Gas company has to dig on either side of the lot to pinch off the gas line. They then dug a 50” trench to replace the damaged line and fuse it back together. A different plumber had to come and then dig a new trench to the house and set a new meter pit as the tree roots had gotten into the street side of the meter..I am so glad that I had sold that house 5 years ago and wasn’t stuck dealing with that nightmare. Our previous neighbor said the gas leak sounded like a freight train horn whistling and the smell was overwhelming. In 30 years of doing electrical construction I’ve seen some horrible work done by so called “tradesmen” but your video is up in the top 10 of clusters. It was a pinhole leak in the 3/4 copper tubing working it’s way through the concrete.
    Both times I used a sharkbite for the night to temp stop the leak, the next day I cut both ends of the copper tube and fished a 1/2” PEX-A through and attached it.
    Lasted over 3 years till I did a remodel.
    Obviously there is a little bit of volume loss but it was way better than opening walls and ripping up the floor. Woulda been 5000$+. Instead it cost 200$ in parts and tools. I’m an electrician whose done lots of plumbing but I in no way claim to be an expert.

I feel bad for this family, and I hope the insurance this "plumber" has covers the damages to the home. SharkBite's are only allowed for us if it is an exposed line (NOT IN A WALL ) and temporary for something like a pressure test. That being said, the pipe has to be cut square and chamfered/deburred with the correct tool. Marking a line on the pipe for the correct seating depth on those sharkbites is also 100% necessary. Looks like this jimmy cut the lines on a 45 degree angle with a Sawzall which probably did not help the situation with the caps.

    I have done home warranty work but I stopped because they are a scam to us in the field and to customers. First, they only allow a certain amount let's say $1500 for the year a repair. Well, most repairs will go over that amount in the first visit. It's rare that you stay under that amount. Second, is the time it takes for the home warranty company to cut us a check for the job we did. Some times it takes 30 days if we are lucky or 60 days after the job is completed. So, we literally pay customers to fix their issues that's going on until we receive a check back from the company. Every time I would go to a customer home I would tell them not to start adding a whole bunch of things to the list of repairs because the warranty company will decline your service. Instead I would give them the same advice save the monthly fee and save it and when some does break down the road you have that money. It may not cover 100% of the repair but at least it will cover some of it.

    There is always a process of elimination to be followed when identifying a fresh water leak.
    1.) Open meter lid and verify the meter is spinning.
    2.) If there's a sprinkler system, shut off the double check valve, therefore eliminating/identifying the sprinkler system as the source of the leak.
    3.) If there's a valve box at the house, check for moistuer in or near the box, as that is often a place where a leak can occur, if there's no moisture present, shut the valve off, thus eliminating/identifying the yard line as the culprit.
    4.) Shut the water to the water heater off, if that stops the meter you have a hot side slab leak.
    5.) Do a careful inspection of the brick around the outside of the home, and see if any water is coming out over the slab through a weep hole, as a busted pipe supplying a hose bib could be the issue.
    If everything above is completed and the meter is still spinning, it's definitely time for a plumber to come out and find the leak, and honestly, you'd need one anyway, because even if you can identify that it's a hot side leak for example, you still need a licensed professional to actually listen and locate where under the slab the leak is, and determine if a penetration repair or tunneling repair is necessary. Also, it should be noted that cutting holes in walls and cutting manifolds apart is a last resort to find a leak. It is sometimes necessary, but typically only for really small leaks, or leaks that could be in a beam and are very difficult to try and hear with Gen-Ears or Big Foot Ears.

      Everybody knows Big Foot is in the A/C, Heating business... I not falling for that. You had me for a second there.
      But seriously. Great information. Let's not forget that if the water shut off valves at the house or the water heater are multi-turn instead of ball valves, they can start leaking when you turn them and not stop leaking until they are replaced. They can also turn off and never turn back on again. And they sometimes fail to completely turn off all the way which can result in a misdiagnoses.
