The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation are currently in a battle to see who holds the future of plumbers in Texas.
In this video I'll be discussing if with the new regulation, will people be able to become a plumber in just few days?

I have been a plumbing contractor in 3 states, CA, KS, OR. The same thinking that you have about how much better you are compared to other states is the same thinking that has been going on in Oregon for years. Plumbing really is not that hard especially if most or all that you do is residential work. If you want to move to another state do you want to start over in the trade? That is what happens many times. I have seen master plumbers being forced to be an apprentice all over again when they move to Oregon. This is why we should have national licenses not state.

If you federalize a license, standards go down. The beauty of our republic is that each state can go it's own way. If one state wants a plumber in name but another state makes you earn that title, then that state should have the freedom to make that determination. However, with that being said, we don't have to throw the baby out with the bathwater. If a state has strong standards and goes to another state, then they shouldn't be forced to start over

It sad the State of Texas is going to dumb down the plumbing licenses, we all need to come together to see if we can stop this from happening. I was proud when I pass my test and got my Plumbing license.

With and EPA and an Hvac certification you can work under a license hvac contractor but not work as a contractor acording to TDLR there is a difference, to leagally work on an hvac system there has to be a lincense contractor and to be eligible to take the hvac license test you need atleast 4 years in the field according to TDLR.

But if I am a journeyman in sales tech in Cali can I still work for someone in Texas with the same job title or would I have to be a apprentice for 4 years all over again

Need to put in the time, I am a apprentice now for 9 months in new construction. I am getting better, but it takes time. 4 years for a journeymen and another year for master plumbing. I have a long way to got, but my company expects me to be a great plumber now, no way!!! Florida.

I know this is an older video, I agree / disagree with all the restrictions or difficulties in getting licensed which is part of the reason that there are so many unlicensed folk. The amount of red tap is both good and bad. My experience is in Pool Building, anyone can build a pool in Texas and only the Electrical, Gas, Water Supply and Equipment must be with a licensed guy/gal. So would that mean a Master plumber that never touched pool plumbing a day in their life knows what they are doing? I bring this up as a valid point, I want to get my Master Electrician and Plumber or at least have the ability to tap into a main panel, water supply or gas to run a dedicated line to the equipment pad. I want zero to do with the house and I worked under a Pool Contractor in CA, but denied a Master Plumber and Journeyman because the Pool Builder license doesn't count. So what to do in this case, why not create some specialty categories and all too many inexperienced pool builders with a basic general contractor license are building pools and sub out part of the trades for the main connects. Anyone can technically do anything else as long as it does not interfere with the main connect.

I currently hold a journeyman license. I worked hard to get it. I don’t agree with TDLR taking over TSBPE. To just throw away decades of TSBPE pride and hard work is a shame! I think that by changing licensing is only a scam. Why get all current plumbers to switch over to tdlr go through paperwork, fees (I’m sure), and waste time. Budgeting more money for Lisa makes sense to me. I am sure that there is a way if there is a willingness to figure it out!

Pros: More people will become plumbers instead of going to a college and studying courses with no value with thousands of dollars of their own money OR getting into debt.
Cons: There might just be lots of inexperienced plumbers and they will do messy jobs.
