25 and started my apprenticeship on july 15th. I left a laboring position making between 60k-70k a year.... but it was not a career. I bit the bullet and took a position that is less than half what I was making. All because I knew I need a career not a job. If anyone else is in the same boat, it's ok to start over and work your way back up again. Good luck to all those starting their career in the plumbing industry. I currently live alone with my dog but I know in the long run, that future house, future new vehicle, and future life will be worth it.
Just became a 4th year apprentice this month. Started when I was 25 as well. It flys by man and before you know it’ll you’re making that money! Learn what you can and run with it
@@frankyhernandez4038 thanks for the wise words brotha!
I’ve been thinking of getting in to plumbing union for a long time. I’m 46 now I believe I can do it but my with my age I’m not sure how the union would feel about that. I’m in Pennsylvania I know there is a local in Philadelphia and also one in Maryland.
same boat as you except a little older but left a labour job that paid around 60-65k/year and it took me many years of moving up the ladder to foreman position to earn that when it will take me only 3 years to make more than that in commercial plumbing. We'll see how it goes, I can always go back to university and get my bachelor's degree if it doesn't work out.
Don't forget the wife. Love my boy
Plumbing maybe a hard job but what’s even harder is not being able to support yourself or your family. I will get down and dirty for a better future
Well said brotha.
Great way to look at it bro

I became a plumbing apprentice at 31 in Houston Texas. I have good days and I have bad days but overall I come home feeling accomplished.
Hi Ray, how is it treating you? Just turned 28 and I'm considering it. Burned-out from my desk job and I want that feeling of working hard and coming home feeling accomplished.
Yo I’m 29 thinking of a career change
I’m 31 and just applied to an apprenticeship in my area. I am a machine operator presently.
I'm 31 years old over here in New Zealand and I am considering a career change and taking up a plumbing apprenticeship.
Thats what its about, liking what you're doing.
I'm a 38 year old woman who has spent my entire life trapped behind a desk in an office job and I am eager to start an apprenticeship in the trades and work with my brain AND my hands. I'm a bit worried that it's "too late"' but I think it might be worth it!
It’s never to late. If you want to learn it’s a great opportunity! I love it.
Funny. I’m 37 and I hate my office job. I’m thinking of getting into the trades. How are things working out?
I remember reading something along the lines of “you don’t want to get that certification because you’re already 35 and by the time you’re done, you’ll be 40. The crazy thing is whether you get it or not, you’ll still be 40.”
Don’t let life pass you up! Get in front of it. Best of luck to you

I’m 21 and have been doing retail and sales for 2-3 years now. I saw a plumbing apprentice job listing on indeed and got curious. I’ve always been curious about doing a trade/manual labor job because once I get into doing manual labor, I do enjoy it. I’ll definitely be watching more from this channel to see if plumbing is something I should look into! All I know is I want a good career that isn’t a desk job. It’s too boring to sit on your butt all day haha!
I'm in the position right now haha.
same position lmao, but i got a job as a general labour for a flat roofing company. Plan on doing plumbing next
Hey y’all, 16 and in tradeschool to be a plumber/pipefitter, I took the initiative to look at where everyone else was going and I just went the opposite way. Proud to be learning this intuitive trade. God bless all of you!
Good luck bro and God bless you!

Not even hating. Genuinely wish someone told me this: it is the most awful trade. Stay away, be electrician instead
This has helped me decide on a career in plumbing. Thank you Roger for you insightful videos on the craft and I love that you give back this way! This was a good deciding factor for me. Once again thank you very much!
I have been plumbing in knoxville tn for 25 yrs. I like every word you tell everyone. Thank you. I have fwd your videos to my apprentices
I'm still a pre-apprentice and they haven't accepted me as a full apprentice but thank you for making this video. I needed to hear it.
As a 29 year old woman I started as an apprentice at the end of this May. It feels great to finally know what I want to work with and I learn new things everyday. I have no experience whatsoever in this business so it's hell of a ride with a lot of information. But it's really fun!
Did you go to school for it first or just dove in based on your experience ?
Fantastic video. Thank you so much for the pep talk.
I am a 4th year apprentice who is getting closer to the goal of becoming licensed but this job can wear on you sometimes, especially if your company doesnt even give you breaks most times. Lol
I need that final push of motivation to finish my race and you just helped big time. Thanks so much.
I do side jobs all the time and I know that when I have the freedom and power to choose my own path, it wont be as grueling and back breaking on my body.
I appreciate everything Ive gone though and experienced, but we are overworked at my company, no question.
Anyways enough bitching out of me! I subscribed for sure. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks man, this really helped me alot. I'm a senior and I'm about to graduate and I actually have an apprenticeship with a plumbing business and you've actually taught me a few more things I should know.
I've never known what I could do as far as a career until my friend mentioned plumbing. Now I'm quite interested in it but don't know where to start. I appreciate watching your tips and will take the study approach seriously.
I’m applying myself for my apprenticeship. Aiming for Master plumber. I just graduated trade school for HVAC and I’m EPA certified. 16 years commercial plumbing/pipefitting. Hands down my favorite part of my job is piping or re-piping large mechanical rooms.
Hi Jason,
If you are a plumber in one state, can you move to any state and immediately start work? Or are plumbing licenses requirements different for each state?
As a Boiler Tech I can appreciate this keep up the good work!
I’m 37 I started plumbing at 18 full time. I can take my skills to pay the bills everywhere. Just watch learn and ask questions. When my helper brings me a tool I don’t need I’m still happy because at the very least he’s trying. Then I show him why I don’t need that tool.
I just turned 18 years old and I'm just starting my heating and maintenance course im so excited to get into the plumbing scene as my father has 35 years+ in the job and I can't wait to take over and be like him!
16 and im in the second year, found your chanel about a month ago, very helpful indeed. Thanks roger!
Your tips are great. You seem like a very educated humble man and i greatly appreciate and respect that. Was in the health care field for 16 years love it. However im ready for a career change just want to start on something else and learn a new trade. Thank you
I am 35 and just started apprenticeship in plumbing and heating. I love it and if your in Alaska call Boiler man. They are the best. Super knowledgeable and beautiful work. I have been in the construction field since I was 13 and I hold 3 journeymen qualifications and I wish I would have learned it first. I am so happy with plumbing. Here in Alaska we don't plunge toilets lol or pump septics lmfao. Lol 8 hours hahaha we work 5-10s. Lower 48 is so lazy. I am taking your advice on studying now for journeymen test. I'm 25 and started my apprenticeship with the local 68 this year. I'm officially going to work this upcoming Monday. I'm extremely nervous since I've never done any work like this before, but I'm also anxious as hell to learn the craft. Wish me luck and thanks for spreading some knowledge.
How’d you do?
Any updates
2 months later I’m now working on a construction site building dorms at a university. When I first started at the shop I had no idea what I would be in for on site, but I’ve completely adapted. My journeyman and I make such a great team, it’s gotten to the point I know what he wants to do before he even says anything. He doesn’t just use me as a mule, but he teaches me everything step by step. Scariest thing so far was hanging a 8’ stick of 10” cast iron pipe 30’ in the air on a swaying scissor lift lol. He moves pretty fast but has no problem when I have questions, or don’t understand right away, he actually likes how honest I am about where I’m at. I love it and can’t wait to see how much more skilled I will become in the future.

I'm 36. I made a whole bunch of fails in life thinking I was "too good" (and even "not smart enough") to do this kind of work. I am a residential maintenance man in Ohio. Hey there ! I’m looking at becoming a plumbing apprentice , really enjoy your videos !
Hey Roger awesome video, thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I’m joining an engineering department at my local hospital as a maintenance mechanic working with the plumbers. As it is an entry level job, I will be assisting them specifically. I’m mechanically inclined and have the basic knowledge but I’d like to ask if you have a video or any recommendations to how I can learn all the types of tools and materials that they use so I can get a head start on getting accumulated.
During my interview I was asked what certain tools were but they were the easy ones like wrenches, drills, and saws, but I also was asked to perform soldering copper pipe and threading pipe, which I’ve never done before but after they showed me once, I tried it and succeeded fairly well for my first times. That’s where I don’t know much about the tools and was hoping you can point me in an direction to learn and build more confidence when handling that work. Thanks again hope to hear back from you!!
I like what I heard when he was turning the 10 steps about plumbing and go beginner Palmer and I'll My Hangout my I am a registered plumber I did every year at North Tech and I'm still wanting to learn more in this trade
Hi Roger. I’m getting out of the military after a 20 years, and I want to start a new career in plumbing. It’s right my alley. My job in the Coast Guard, dealt with numerous plumbing projects and I loved it.
Did you end up doing it? I'm thinking about joining the Air Force and/or becoming a plumber, but I don't know which path to choose or if it would be ideal to do both at once.
Hey what is basic stuff I should know I start an apprenticeship tomorrow I told them I have experience but idk anything
I need to pay off some medical bills first but I plan on starting my apprenticeship in 2-3 years. I'll definitely save up for the study guide and continue watching plumbing work so I'm more knowledgeable when I go in.
My dad had a very successful plumbing shop in SoCalif, new construction only, mostly tract homes....1,000's and 1,000's of them. I worked summers while in grade school. At 20 yrs old, second year apprentice, I was running jobs. 99% of what I learned was on the job working with older, experienced guys. I did custom houses on the side (by myself) on weekends. Went into business for myself in 2008.....it's been very good to me..... financially independent...been semi-retired at 58.

I’m a CDL driver, tired of the road and ready for something that I can use as an outlet for my creativity and I’ve always been fascinated by pipes and getting water from point A to point B. I’m great with my hands and I’m a master problem solver. I feel like I could really excel in an industry like Plumbing and I’m going for my apprenticeship next week. Up here in Oregon as well as many other places, there’s a high demand for labor since nobody wants to work, and a company here is offering apprenticeships starting at $20/h with ten steps, the final step ending at about $50/h. The way I see it, if you’re looking to get into a new trade, there couldn’t be a better time than now to start.
I’m looking forward to exploring and absorbing the rest of your content.
I also think it’s interesting that I found this specific video, while halfway across the country, when Austin, Texas is my home.

Congrats man I just turned 28 3 days ago and I need a new career, I was considering welding but maybe plumbing ?
I've been a real estate agent the last 2 years, and have found it really difficult to find clients that don't bail on you at the last minute. I didn't make much money at all over 2 years, about $14,000 total. I'm looking to get into something where I have a guaranteed paycheck. I heard plumbers can make good money and I like working with my hands. It's always nerve racking jumping into a new career, but I think I'm going to give it a try. I will probably start by buying that book.
There's good money in it for sure, I'm a drain tech I don't have my journeymans plumbing licence yet but I already make 40k a year just going around clearing drains. Get with a service company not just a new installation plumbing company you'll learn a lot just from servicing and understand why plumbing codes are the way they are.
I appreciate your videos , I have learned a lot from them . I’m having to do my own plumbing and repair. I want to learn everything that I can to become very good at all the obstacles I face , Thanks

Mr Wakefield I recently started my plumbing apprenticeship tell me am I making the right decision as I'm in South Africa 🇿🇦 and by the looks of things plumbers don't get paid much here so maybe if you can advise me,,as my fear is I don't want to take on something that won't put food on the table....thanks for the awesome video sir🙏🙏🙏🙏
I’m 19 & I just had my online interview for a plumbing apprenticeship yesterday, I’ll be getting the results in two weeks on how I did & I’ll have to wait for a company to pick me up if I passed the Interview. Really hope I made the cut & looking forward to it!
Got dispatched to a local company in my area that I’ve been trying to get in for about 4 months now, been working in the field for 2 weeks now & I’ve gone to my first class already!
Thanks for the great advice i am 15 and looking to find an apprenticeship in plumbing as I really like the hands-on work much rather than school and think it would be a great opportunity for m to progress in my career path.
Great talk for the youth of America sir. The trades are a great way to go, there is good money in it and you will always have work. Thank you for the video.
I’m 28 and I’m 2 years through my plumbing apprenticeship, it’s great seeing these videos thanks very much
Danny please tell 4,000 of your closest friends to subscribe... Thank you!
I started plumbing at 15. At 19, I’ve left the trade and went to college. Any job has it’s up and downs. Great trade to know. Hardest part for me was the customers.
hey man, i'm about the same age looking to do this... any tips?
When starting are there any written tests? Or you just do the 4 year apprenticeship then you become a professional plumber?
Roger you a real G keep up the good work !!
Going in on Monday to interview for an apprenticeship. Before moving states recently, I was a journeyman HVAC installer and worked in the industry for 4 years. Appreciate the tips, albeit they were right in line with what made me successful in my previous trade(s). The ability to assess need is bar none one of the best attributes a helper can have, aside from being hard working and ambitious. I moved up from a 2nd apprentice to 1st apprentice in HVAC after 1 month based on those characteristics. They said I pretty much broke a record as far as that goes but just trying to reiterate the importance of your tips. Time to deflate this seemingly big head and start at the bottom and work my way up again! It will be fun getting down and dirty again.
Why are you moving out of the hvac industry?
@@camaroman101 I’m back in hvac after I applied, interviewed and hired in the same day. Was simply looking into learning another trade though. We’re a mechanical company though, so it’s a little bit of everything.
