How Much Money Do Plumbers Make?

  • Probably the most asked question I get is: How much money do plumbers make? This question is kind of hard to answer because the area you're in has a lot to do with it.
    But today I'm going to talk to you about what plumbers make in the Dallas area at various levels of licensure and if they're in the union or not! Again this is kind of a scale, and the amount you can make as a plumber might be higher or lower.
    Big cities like New York and LA pay plumbers A LOT more than they do here in Dallas, which is more than they pay in small towns. But we're going to talk about all that and more in this video. Enjoy!

      Much appreciated. Many risks thier health onsite in service to provide long-term protection.
      I have invested in CBRN masks to allow for toxic scenarios or heavy carbon monoxide exposure from a torch in confined areas. Different 40mm cans help out for smoke or glue fumes. Most of everything I install has a P65 cancer warning label. I hate to install water heaters and faucets I know cause cancer but that is what we are supplied. Many of the processes I go through to repair expose me to cancerous or just physically dangerous scenarios. It is important to keep a clean home/site and beware about what your working on.

Ive done mostly residential service and remodel. While I love the repair side, it seems like companies ive worked for push for making the up sale. If the customer knows what they want, thats one thing. But I can't tell a customer they need a Navien 240A when a Rheem 50 gallon is already more than enough for their home and family with out feeling like a dirt bag scammer. Im on the lower end of the journeyman pay scale and feel like i make an honest wage without making up sales. I will get that master licences soon and based off the people who always ask if I do side work, I will be in the upper pay scale without any guilt.

    I started in the union as an apprentice and by my second year I felt really head back working under lazy journeyman. One thing that sucks about unions is no matter the skill or work ethic everyone makes the same which is bullshit. Half way through my third year I had enough and left a very large commercial contractor doing new construction and service for a residential service company and money wise it's not even close. I'm working on commission instead of hourly and commission is significantly more than hourly. In Atlanta the scale is $31. Since leaving the union I've been hitting low six figure years and for the most part work about 40 hours.
    The union is good for what it is, but 5 years for me was way too long to wait to make the money when I could perform like a journeyman. In hindsight I'm glad I went though the union and applied myself and anyone looking to get into the trade I point them in that direction as it's a great way to learn if you take it seriously, but once you have a good grasp of plumbing the union it's not the end all be all like they make it out to be especially if you do service work. For me there next step is start my own business.

    • @RogerWakefield
      @RogerWakefield  5 лет назад

      @charles king I joined the union after 17 years open shop. You are right there are people in the union that aren't working as hard as others. There are also people working open shop that are lazy. After being in the union a couple of years I have always made more than scale. To me the benefits of the union are the pension plan, 401k , and the insurance. I know that those 3 things set the union apart from every other option. Owning your own business is a great option for all of us!

      I was open shop for 4 yrs and thought the state kept up with hrs. I was wrong and couldn't find or remember where all I worked. I had medical problems and never went to a dr cuz I never had insurance since the military. And no one in open shop wanted to pay good. Only about 11 an hr. I got into local 146 in ft worth and got ins. Went to a dr. and found several serious problem. Got it all straitened out and making 20.20 an hr now. I do agree with it not being to fair with everyone getting the same pay. I can do all the journeyman work. Even was given my own help to help me do almost an entire copper victolic system by ourselves. He was 1st year and didnt know anything at first. I have experience in commercial and residential, new remodel and repair.

    I make anywhere from 3-5k a week with 22% commission and any material costs under 1000$ doesn’t have materials taken out of your commission. There’s different tiers of revenue that increase your percentage too, at 18k we get 27% commission. It’s a win for the owner, the worker, and the customer. It all depends on where you live though. The best part of it all is i’m only 21 with 3 years experience.

I started in residential new construction, moved to commercial new construction, then to residential service and finally onto commercial service which is hands down my favorite. It is nice to see the things you have been building, how they work and how they don’t work and how they hold up over the years. It will make you way more valuable. But always start in new construction. It will help you in service because you can x ray vision a structure when you walk in.
