    I do not live in the USA but here in Canada a plumber charges 150$ just to show up at the house (300$ for nights/weekends). For this amount of money I make sure I know which companies are good and program them right into my phone.

    These $#!+heads are in almost every service industry in Canada. There's no laws to protect consumers. It's quite sad, these guys get slaps on the wrist and are likely still scamming today. Bogus addresses, multiple websites and company names with the same addresses, fake reviews. It casts a shadow over the trades and service industries and makes it harder for honest licensed professionals to gain clients trust. The only upside is I always have work fixing/repairing hack jobs that someone screwed up in the first place.

    Hey Roger, greetings from Germany, we have a similar problem here. People have a plumbing problem and google for a plumber, they end up with a call centre that sends plumbers (sometimes not even licensed) 200km to the customer and they rip them off with all tricks in the book.
    I.e. one case that is still open, a plumber should fix a clogged toilet. Two plumbers arrived after 5 hours, they removed what was clogging up the plumbing, but to be sure, they used the camera to "check the pipes" for 120 Euros per meter, 80 meters down the drain. They ended up in th main pipe under the street. Now, 250 Euros for the work, 180 Euros for driving, 80x120 Euros for the unnecessary camera check. They sued the customer, but the judge couldn't trust his eyes when he saw the bill and they are now on trial for scamming people.

    Using debit and credit cards is the best option because the credit card companies have fraud protection on your card. They will give you the money back if they breach the contract.

    A plumber doing heating? Isn't that a different trade? ( hvac license)

    • @TheMinecraftACMan
      @TheMinecraftACMan Год назад +2

      Plumbing and HVAC have always had a lot of crossover. Plenty of places have a legal requirement that all gas lines be run by a licensed plumber. Where that's the case, HVAC companies usually hire a master plumber to train their guys on the local code and do the work under their license. Some places have a special license for gas piping that anyone can get. Some places don't care as long as the actual work is up to code, like here in TX. Also, boilers have a lot of water piping, some places may require that be done by a plumber.

    • @esl4058
      @esl4058 Год назад +1

      I’ve always thought of hvac as a sort of bridge between plumbing and electrical as that trade overlaps with both. I guess I depends on the individual tech or company and what services they choose to specialize in.

    We had 2 plumbers show up and spend 5 hours trying to fix a leaky pipe. The pipe cost 9 dollars yet they charged around 350. They kept saying there was water in the system, we’ve lived here for decades and no plumber has had that issue. Then they broke the toilet hose. They left holes all over the wall and had to pay extra for the repairs
    What’s disgraceful is that other plumbers defended it

    • @RogerWakefield

      I can't speak on the price....especially if they are licensed..where was the leaking pipe located?

      The wall behind the toilet, they found it fast but said there was water in the system. Thought that was odd as it has never been an issue @@RogerWakefield

    For Irrigation and Backflow Testers in Texas people can check TCEQ to verify a License.

    How does licensing work when going from a state that doesn't require a license to a state that does. I've been doing HVAC for 15 years in Pennsylvania. PA doesn't seem to have the same system as Texas when it comes to being licensed. If I moved to Texas today, would I be able to get a license or would I have to go work for someone and just completely restart?

    • @TheMinecraftACMan

      If I understand it correctly, 5 years of tax returns working in the industry is enough to get you into the class for the test.

    In North Carolina you have to work for a licensed plumber for 4500 hours before you can take the test to get your license. School or no school. I love plumbing work but I’m not licensed. So I take care of the people that can’t afford a licensed plumber. Including people that can’t pay anything. It shouldn’t cost $1600 to change a $400 water heater. I am upfront about no license. Would I be considered a crook?

    • @RnRinc1
      @RnRinc1 2 года назад +3

      definitely not. Same here, I'm also not licensed, in my experience a good reputation is more important than a license. Charging 1600 dollars for a 400 dollar job seems more crooked to me lol.

    I can't say for all states but most the plumber has to be licensed, bonded, and insured. Those states also will have a contractors state license board. You can check with them to see if the "contractor" is legit.
    Always get a minimum of three bids and never take the highest or the lowest, the one in the middle.
    Never pay before the work is done, e.g. cash deposit. You pay as the work is done, e.g. 40%, 40%, 20%. And don't forget to have the contractor pull permits and posted in a visible location for all to see. These are requirements the contractor will learn just to have the privilege to be a contractor.
    I hope this information is helpful.

    It dont even cost that much to convert from oil burner to gas

    • @SLAMM728
      @SLAMM728 Год назад

      In NYC it cost a lot more than 5k to do that type of work. You to also get an electrician to get a permit. You need to file with DEP to remove the oil tank. The plumber also has to have a gas certification card to perform gas work.
      To deal with DOB and get all the required permits/inspections/sign offs by itself you are looking at around 8-10k.

      Probably Pex piping would be the best. You can get the proper crimping tool for like $70 at Home Depot. And if you’re going from copper to Pex you can buy sweat on adapters. Or if you’re going from galvanized to Pex they sell a threaded adapters to Pex. Though I would recommend that you buy a threaded ball valve with a Pex end on one side

    Not sure if being licensed would have helped this guys character. I tell everyone to watch out. I preach about the box truck plumbers being the best to call. They have books with clear upfront pricing. I had always been taught to hand the customer the price sheet. Then find their issue on the list. They can see the price there. And while working. Look through any other future ideas they may have.
    So the point of that is. The bad guys prey on your fear of the “price of the box truck , t v ad plumber “ please don’t be afraid of anything you’ve never experienced. You’ll ruin the whole day. Box truck plumbers don’t get rich on 1 repair. They thrive on return customers. If the prices were that outrageous, they wouldn’t be putting commercials out to be criticized. Find a company that has a name associated. Mine is james plumbing. In my town , you know someone with the last name james. Chances are they are kin to me. You can find me quickly in my area. individuals with general names or name that purposely comes first alphabetically are rip off artists. Aaa plumbing. Don’t call those guys. There hook is to be first in phone listing. But if Zigglers plumbing has 3 pages. He paid a stupid amount for advertising but call THEM. Don’t be a victim to assuming repair costs. Act like it’s car. You wouldn’t leave your $30,000 car at a shop you haven’t investigated? Why call the first guy on your $300,000 home?
