Hey roger do you have a email i can ask you some questions about plumbing in dallas texas area im a plumber from nj that works for nyc transit authority looking for possibly moving to dallas area and obtaining my master plumbers license. Seem like a very knowledgeable guy keep up the great videos man love the content.
I wish there were more licenses required in other fields. I am a tile guy and follow after plumbers and aways see bad remodel plumbing. I was a plumbers apprentice for a few years and know enough to tell the general contractor did the plumbing on a shower replace/ upgrade. I always get into trouble voicing my opinion as to why I am putting in a 1500 to 5k custom shower over coccus/ copper / pex/ shark bite cobble together when I know it will eventually leak and the home owner will just have to suffer later damages. I like your integrity. I do the same thing in my trade, the right way or not at all!
I really want to know what that device behind you is with all the information.

I'm an HVAC tech and I feel terrible when I have to tell a customer that it's going to be an expensive repair. When it's a quick simple repair that doesn't cost them much they make me feel like a hero. I don't know how people can knowingly rip people off.
I think that goes for most repair tech jobs. I repair computers, and its so satisfying to have what appears to be a problem requiring a new part to be something far simpler. But then awful when you have to tell the client most of the computer needs to be replaced.
Feeling "like a hero is cool" and all that, but in the end money is what puts food on the table. I don't condone what these people are doing, but I understand them.

"The leak will increase the pressure". That is some wild logic right there.
@@mitch7525 As it happens I'm a postgraduate physicist. Bernoullis principle would show a decrease in pressure in the system. A leak would increase the flow rate, increased flow rate equals a lower pressure. The effect would be incredibly negligible of course, but the complete opposite of your attempt to be smart.

The first plumber on the second water heater using two hands on Channellocks didn't look like he's used them much either. If you have to use two hands on Channellocks just put them down. Chris Hansen wasn't too familiar with them either. I was thinking "open them up dude". I don't think Adrian was intentionally trying to rip them off, he just isn't educated in the field of plumbing. My only gripe as a 20 year plumber is this. That flex line that was loosened I’d never assume someone loosened it purposely. I would have told them either we can try and tighten it down or replace the flex line. But I probably would have tightened it down a little dried it all up and checked
And our luck. We would tighten it. And dive away. Then the flex line adapter cracks later ...and we get the blame for over tighten it.

company's like this should immediately shut down due to literally being caught on camera committing fraud ...bottom line, that's exactly what this is
This is WAY more common than you think, especially the "home repair" field. I used to have a company in Texas, that specialized in "handicap" (we worked with the actual STATE of Texas) .. anything from wheelchair ramps, to wheelchair shower installation and grab bars in showers. The great thing with that type of work is, you have to be licensed and up to date with the codes, as every single job you do before getting paid is inspected by the State of Texas. There were so many times I had to actually go out there and fix or even repair what other companys(that worked with the State) had done. They literally threw a piece of plywood down and called it a wheelchair ramp for a 75 yr old lady... It didn't take long for Texas to pull of their contracts from outside sources and put everything under their own banner.... The easiest thing I can tell you is... Never feel like you don't have a say so when you're talking with your contractor about work and if you feel like you're being "pressured" to go in the direction they want, but its not what you were wanting at all.. Then by all means, speak your mind as you're the client or find a company that wouldn't make you feel like you got strong armed for a quick buck.
Why is this in my recommended list!? I Dunno but I watched the whole thing lol

He can't practice as a plumber without a red seal ticket. I would be asking him if he has a plumbers ticket if I got suspicious. Good plumbers have no problems showing their red seal ticket beside the work contract. It's the law in Canada.
I would really like to see some investigative pieces like this but for electrical. I have seen some HORRIBLE electrical work that could kill someone.
I once saw someone in my plumbing school class put together a simple circuit for AC that had next to no rubber on the wires
The house I'm in now had a short in it that caused both neutral and ground to be hot on a 20 amp circuit. The line was fed into my refrigerator line along with half the appliances in one room... and half the appliances in a room on the other side of the house. The guy that discovered it amidst the horrific multi-decade jumble of wires said he'd never seen such a crazy thing in 3 decades of electrical work. It would have possibly killed anyone working on it that didn't check the ground AND neutral for being hot. Not caught during inspection, go figure.
We just had a home in my town catch fire, not a bad one thankfully. But, they found that a good majority of the house was wired with speaker wire. I'm not even sure how it worked, but it was like that for over twenty years.
James Kelly knew a of a million dollar house that had a room added in like a sun room or art room, they were doing some light demo because of some other issue and found that all the electrical was actually extension cords. The lady sued that company so hard.
I love it because I know how to do electrical work but I couldn’t be bothered installing something for the time it takes so I hire people and after it’s installed I like looking at how it was done

That's actually smart because if it's out of your scope and you try to fix it anyway, any issues that happen afterwards are your fault. This way, there's business insurance, and such backing you up. Always trust in the paper trail, and take before and after pictures whenever possible.

Water heater explosion story. My father who is a carpenter, landlord, handyman, put a water heater in our house, one that he designed and built, plumbing, electrical, roofing, etc.. For about six months the temp/pressure relief valve kept leaking. He would tap on it with a heavy object to 'seat' the valve. That would work for about a month. Then it would start dripping again. He purchased a higher pressure and temp safety valve. One night while hot water was being used, dishes/laundry we heard a thud sound. I go down to see what the problem is. The bottom of the water heater was bowed down, like a bowl. If you have ever taken a water heater apart, you will know that the inside tank (bottom) of the water heater is domed, like an upside down bowl. (concave) Not Convex like ours was now. The whole thing was 2 inches taller than it is supposed to be. That is a lot of pressure built up inside the water heater to do this. We replaced the water heater.
After we replaced the tank we asked the local plumbers what could have caused the problem. They said the most likely cause of the 'leak' was due to one of the thermostats sticking on, causing the water in the tank to get way to hot. Replacing a $16.00 thermostat would have fixed the problem.
Moral to the story. 1. If the tank 'explodes' it is not like a hand grenade, or propane bottle explosion. There are safety devices to prevent catastrophic explosions as well as physics. You are still gonna get really WET, but you won't die. 2. Ask (pay) an expert for their advice, even if you are a DIY type person. An honest plumber will save you money.

This gives us pretty free reign to prioritise customer loyalty and satisfaction over any sale we could foist on them today. Also, happy customers bring more customers, angry customers drive other customers away. If we can easily fix something without spare parts, we fix it for free. If they need something we don't carry, we'll find the best place to get it. If they think they have to buy a replacement 100$ widget and all they really need is a 3$ gizmo, we'll tip them about the gizmo. I'm really happy that we're never incentivised to work against the customer's best interest, as I would refuse to take advantage of other people like that.
Yes so true. Especially these days where people talk on social media. 1 outstanding service comment is worth its weight in gold. I went to a jiffy lube the other day due to get an oil change and fix a rattle that I thought was a serpantine belt. when I'd start my engine. It seemed to increase when I revved. The guy says we don't fix rattles but let me recommend someone who could help you. I said well I still need an oil change...You know what he told me? He said in a hushed voice "They do oil changes there for like $22.50...The guy proceeds to give me the name of this little hole in the wall muffler place across town. I look up their ratings online. 4.5/5 with 60+ positive comments. I was like Wow that guy is fantastic! So I drive the 20 mins or so it took to get over there and wait. After awhile the guy looks at my car and brings me over. He says see this? "points to heater shield" this is what was causing all that rattling. He shakes it with his hand and it starts rattling. Wow ok is it easy to fix? Yeah we can just tighten it. I said that's great! Can you do an oil change as well? He said of course! Guess how much it cost me? $42.35 cents to get my heater shield and oil changed! Whenever I have an issue I'm going there! They made a life long customer that day! They could have told me anything and I would have paid it.
As a plumber when people say “hot water heater” instead of just “water heater” i get triggered 😂
Timothy Plympton especially other plumbers
As a plumber I agree... never installed a cold water heater! Lol
@@matthewazboy8508 wouldn't cold water heater be more appropriate? I mean I wouldn't need a water heater if I already had hot water.
Had a lady offer me snacks and drinks the entire time I was installing her heater. She thought the water heater came with water inside it!
@@matthewazboy8508 I'm not a plumber, so I installed a cold water heater, and a heated icemaker! :)
I don't know why am I watching plumbing videos 😂 But you've made plumbing entertaining lol
16:45 chris Hansen comes in and he instinctively takes a seat got to love that
We have your chat logs here...
Me (is 14 and not even slightly interested in being a plumber): ooh this looks cool
Plumbers make good money and there will always be a demand for plumbers.
You may want think about pursuing a career in plumbing when you enter the workforce in about 4 years. Just a thought nothing more.
The water level is your limits
That ned guy is right, trades are high demand, and stay that way. Welders, electricians, plumbers. All very valuable skills and worth considering. If they aren't your thing, fair enough. But if you dont mind getting your hands dirty there is always that option.
Ned Nedy thanks for the recommendation
plumbers can make 6 figures, it’s a damn good job
Feel like 80% of service plumbing companies are like these companies, makes it hard for an honest plumber to get a job.
I am not the cheapest guys in town... I tell all my customer. My work is guaranteed... 😎Why they keep calling me referring me I have no idea. 😂
The small part of the trades are bad at their jobs at the sort of levels you would put onto a tv show, the majority are usually under tooled to carry out the work, I find the larges5 grief I get is the cost, but the rates are set out, they usually have quotes all around the same figures and the difference between everything is how relatable you are to the client. A good plumber or even an average plumber will have more work than he or she will ever want to know about.
@dkd da most companies that scam people charge top dollar an people pay good money to have their eyes poked .
@dkd da That's not true, there are plenty of expensive plumbing companies that scam people too. But sure if you just go looking for the cheapest rates then you're gonna get scammed.
It's never hard for a plumber to get a job. Stop being an upvote farming drama queen.
He said "I'm a big fan" haha yeah after blowing all that hot air!🤣
Good stuff Roger, I appreciate the content. I really like your watch btw.
As a trades person these types of things always break my heart. I, like many, have spent countless hours with my craft. I will always show the customers exactly what the issue is. Of something is broken I will show them the broken part. Our company tends to be more expensive (for many reasons) but part of that is that all of us are certified and highly trained.
Also if Chris walks into the room I would be less concerned about my water heater lol
I was a plumber and for this reason I quit. the company I was with wanted us to do this kinda thing and I can't stand not being honest with a customer. loved this show!
This is very true! Love this video
When Montgomery Ward was still in business, they sent a very honest plumber to our house. We had just moved in, and I found water around the bottom of the water heater, so I called them out to replace the water heater. I had already checked the connections on top of the heater, and confirmed the leak wasn't from there. The repairman brought me into the water heater/HVAC room, and showed me that the central air condenser drain hose was clogged, and backing up the drainage around the central air unit, and the water heater about 3 feet from it. He unclogged the drain hose, showed me how to maintain it to prevent future clogging, and left without charging us anything. I'm an office machine technician, so I asked him to at least bill me for his time, he said he wouldn't feel right billing me. Needless to say, I recommended them as much a possible.
Hansen: “I’m Chris Hansen of Dateline NBC, and we’re doing a-“
Plumber: “Hey, Jenny said she’s a homeowner. How is she not an adult?”
Me with this video tabbed out listening to it in the background: "That guy sounds like Chris Hansen, weird"
*5 minutes later, tabs to video* "Oh, it IS Chris Hansen"
Imagine having Chris Hansen coming out when you're not a pred. but just a plumber. I'd worry if I ever asked my client about how old their waterheater was or anything along those lines that could get misconstrued by the wrong person 🤣
I THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE VIDEOS AND UNMASKING ALL THESE HEARTLESS SCAMMERS I WOULD SAY THEY NEED SOME JAIL TIME FOR THESE GUYS TO LEARN AND STOP SCAMMING PEOPLE.
GOD BLESS YOU AND REWARD YOU FOR ALL THIS TIME YOU INVEST IN OPENNIG OUR EYES AND WAKING US UP NOT ONLY THIS BUT TO FOR TEACHING US ESPECIALLY US THAT ARE RETIRED LIVE ON A PENSION .
GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ABUNDANTLY.

As an ER physician- there's probably more legitimate reasons to break a person to make them better than a pipe.
wait what?
That's not funny
@@RobotronSage It's true though. If you only partially break your arm, sometimes they have to completely break it or "complete the break" in order for it to heal properly.
@@RobotronSage all surgeries are breaking someone to make them better. Break the skin, find the problem, fix the problem, and bam, theyre better. But they had to be broken first
Sure. Pipes don't start healing themselves wrong after a break.
That's exactly what a scammer would say... 😂
my favorite line from this is: "i don't know that part of his story i wasn't there." and the news guy is like "YOU'RE HIS WIFE".
Taking an intro plumbing class, the instructor had us watch this video. Amazing, after listening to Roger succinctly dissect the actions of these scammers, I see how easy it is to be duped by someone "in the profession" to be able to double talk you into quite an expensive repair bill. Fortunately, Roger provided some equally easy steps to prevent such an occurrence.
ethics, knowledge, morality. this is a good video. no false virtue detected here.
The kid who was told to break the pipe? The way the "owner" was texting him in broken English, and had his wife show up for the interview?
Yeah, they were gonna set the kid up, tell the homeowner their tech broke it,, and then give them a stupid estimate to fix it. Folks do it all the time. You can tell that's why they hired him,, to be a fall guy.
lmfao if i break a pipe that im not there to fix i fix it for free, im not gonna charge them for me fucking shit up.
@Chief Keef
Rule 1 of scamming: the scam doesn't have to be smart to work. In fact the dumber the scam, the more people you filter out of your pool for schmucks. In scam emails for example they _intentionally_ put in misspellings and bad grammar to make anyone who is capable of noticing ignore it and anyone who didn't notice would be more likely to fall for the scam.
I could probably name a few politicians who could also fit that pattern but I don't want to get into politics right now...
@Chief Keef even then the guy dug up a gas line an was told to break it.... he was there for a sewage line related call.
They'd have to fix it for free if they admitted breaking it though.
@T
Exactly. He couldn't contradict the story.
5:09 right after the guy said "yes it is" i got that credit card commercial ad that starts off with Dr. Evil saying "how bout NOOO". I lol'd. Then skipped the ad.
I had a similar experience with buying a home in the desert. The toilet was backing up, this after the septic tank was pumped during the inspections. We had to get a plumber out there to inspect it to ease the minds of the mortgage company, and so on. The guy claimed that the toilet line was broken and would need to be replaced. And gave me a $10,000 estimate. Mind you the toilet line was only 11 feet long. Total.
I ended up doing the work myself with the graces of the selling realtor, had the entire line dug up in about 45 minutes, and the entire line had been replaced recently as it was ABS. I called the plumber that diagnosed the line, who also ran a camera down it, and asked for the DVD. He refused to give me the DVD.
The inspection bill was around $400, and I fought it. I told him that I would out him on social media unless he waived the fee. I never heard from him from that day on. Such a shady operation. $10,000 for a pipe that I could’ve had dug up and replaced in under three hours.
I'm going to school to be an inspector and I love having guys like you out there
I bet the dude's heart sank when Chris said "Im Chris Hansen."
I know a guy, J. Sins. He’s a god with any kind of household fixer-upper
he's an expert at laying pipe
and hes an astronaut
A doctor as well
Pretty sure he develops vaccines as well
I did plumbing for 6 years, never licensed, but I had a company that fired me because I didn't scam people out of money, charged the bare minimum or flat rate fee. didn't go around saying oh you need this replaced, or that replaced just to get extra money for the company, even as a commissioned employee. I was honest with my costumers and my past employer hated it.
