I still had to take the tests.

I subbed. I am 31 years old and still to this day from age 6 until now ask the repair man (plumber, electrician, cable, AC/Heat, etc...) if I can watch them while they work because learning is something you can NEVER get to much of and I am genuinely curious. Even learned how to replace the light fixtures on my front porch thanks to the years of watching them as well as mount my TV with the cables behind the wall. I love to learn new things and I think informative videos such as yours are quite useful for people like me who are always willing to learn. When you think you know everything you are truly an idiot. Only the intelligent continue to learn. So I thank you Mr. Wakefield and I hope you continue to make videos. "You can't fix stupid" - Ron White. "Stupid is as stupid does" - Forest Gump's Mom.

I am a hvac tech and alot of guys in my trade hate people over their shoulders. I love it gives me a reason to geek out and flex my knowledge and hopefully help a person out. I believe if you know your trade and are not trying to scam someone why not let them watch. At the end of the day that is a return customer when they cannot figure it out or need new equipment 4 years later because most folks will appreciate your professionalism and that you took the time to explain a system in their home. When I work on a site with other trades I ask them all kinds of questions from framing to plumbing and that all adds to my knowledge and usually helps in the end. Life time learner.

I love this guy. I realized I wanted to get into the trades after an electrician helped me change my tire he asked, "why didn't your dad teach you how to do this?" and I said "I don't think he knows how... he's a lawyer." he laughed and I said I didn't want to end up working a 9-5 office job like him. He showed me that he had a brand new F150 and a house and a family all at the age of 27. I was jealous of what he had and that's when I realized I want to get into the trades. I started with locksmithing and I absolutely love it I plan on starting my own business one day since all of the locksmiths around here are dishonest. For now, I'm going to be working as an apprentice plumber until I have enough to start my own honest locksmithing business. Thanks for giving people like me an alternative to college.

Used to to handyman repairs when I worked as a waiter, you would not believe how fucked up some restaurants are behind the counters.
Countless times where I ended up walking up to the managers like "I can unclog things or fix small leaks, but rotten pipe joints aren't my area of expertise", explaining them how it can affect everything in the place, or how rat poison doesn't get placed right next to the water pipes, yet they never wanted to call experts.

On top of that you have local codes that can change from city to city in the same state. “You can’t make money as a plumber!”
Not with that attitude, you can’t. As far as the “making 100k a year as a plumber” comment, it’s a realistic thing. I’m on track to do about 95k this year doing only drain cleaning. There are factors that can hinder that, such as service area. It’s a lot easier to get enough jobs to make 100k in a dense metropolitan area than in a rural area, but as long as you’re professional, knowledgeable, and honest, you can make a great living for yourself.

    • @Stettafire
      @Stettafire 3 года назад +3

Ye, for sure. It's worth knowing also that rates vary depending on country and wages vary too. 100k as a plumbed in my country is close to impossible. But 60k or 40k? Thars a darn good living considering the average person is on 18k. If you're on 60k in my country, you are doing very well for yourself. Engineers and experienced senior plumbers here are generally around the 45k ish mark. Younger plumbers around 25-30k

She might not need it, but you'll get money for it". I rejected her job offer. I became a junior software dev not long after. I was disgusted with her. When I repaired laptops as a freelancer, I did my best to help educate and support the customer. I built a trust with them. They could ask me anything. I'd advise on what laptops would suit their needs, what brands to avoid etc. Often problems arise not from hardware failure but from "Joe bliggs in work told me to install VerySafeScanner and now I get popups, can you help me?" 99% of the time that was the issue. I'd always be straight and honest as I could be. One time s young lady came to me with a broken monitor. Asker her how long she had it, it was under warranty. I could have charged her to replace it, I didn't. I directed her to get the retailer to honor the warranty. Trust was how I ran my business. While I hated being a contractor, no one could say I crossed the line. I took pride in my work and I treated my customers with respect.

I've never thought you were dishonest dude. I start my training in August this year. I tried to find a company out here to learn under, but with no success. Even though I got to shell out some cash to learn...I can get it back through taxes, plus they said the school brings in plumbing companies to Earn while I learn halfway through the program.
Your videos are informative and have helped guide me into a future where I'll never have debt ever again. College was more worthless than the paper they signed my name on. You teach people how to be self supporting.. So thanks.

Mr Wakefield does everything possible to show proper technique and what learning does for you. Grandfatherring that I know of (in Oklahoma) ended in early 80's and you had to have an active business in that trade to be grandfathered. but many of us went thru the old school helper routine. I worked for Sun Plumbing inc. in florida and then for Certified Plumbing of Brevard and was the owners helper when he was a journeyman, He is one of the best plumbers I have ever met and served. Roger does us all a great service-

Yeah but theres also a continuation of that phrase. "Jack of all trades, master of none, but often better than a master of one." Just because a person is a "jack of all trades" doesnt mean they dont know what they are talking about. All the jacked up stuff comes from arrogance and those that dont know how to say "Im not skilled enough for this job"
Edit: A handyman can be skilled as frig. But they can also be unskilled garbage. Just like an actual licensed plumber, they can be skilled or unskilled.

    • @db5095
      @db5095 3 года назад +1

A skilled handyman would be a contractor or a licensed handyman. I was referring to the Bubbas that slap a sticker on a truck and take on jobs that aren't qualified for. Also a Master of a trade or a journeymen takes time and effort . Of course we have hacks in our trade but we also have guys that go above a beyond .

  • @stillinhere

This was enlightening. I get told my job ain't hard, and anyone can do it. I've watched people struggle and fall away in less than a week. I get it that it doesn't require licensing and renewals, and this makes people very condescending. Especially during all the panic shopping times (that are still happening.) To hear that this same mentality creeps into a field that is obviously more strenuous and essential that it requires permits, licensing, and experience helps me understand that people really do have to dig deep to try to make themselves feel better about themselves. Man, people are sumthin' else.

You have similar licensing laws in Connecticut. You have to be an apprentice registered with the state for four years to get a Journeymans license. Then you need to hold the Journeymans license for two years then you can test out for your master. And you have to be a journeyman to be alone on any job. And each journeyman can only have one registered Apprentice accompany him on the job.

As a Montana-licensed handyman, I have done some minor plumbing, such as faucet replacement, dishwasher installation, and drain unclogging. I also replace electrical components like wall outlets and light fixtures. I'm smart enough and honest enough to tell a homeowner when I'm in over my head. I don't do sewer or underground work. I have learned a lot from your videos and I thank you for that.
Here's the one thing I hear most often from homeowners, most of whom are elderly or single moms:
I called a plumber about replacing my (fill in the blank) and he wants a minimum of $150 just to come to my house. We both know that many plumbers will mark up a faucet 100% and charge labor on top of the service fee. Many of my customers can't afford $400 or $500 to replace a faucet or set a toilet. I live about 10 miles out of the city limits, and a service call here is even higher than one in town, even though I'm no further away from their shop than many of their in-town customers. I understand the need to be reimbursed for milage, but 15 miles in town is the same as 15 miles out of town. On short, I appreciate the training you and other plumbers have and I truly wish the State of Montana would police unlicensed handy men here like Texas apparently polices unlicensed plumbers, but they don't. Thanks again for your videos and for sharing your expertise. Have a blessed day!

Hi Roger. I'm a GC here in TX, but years ago, I've actually worked for a couple of plumbing companies in NC, the first was residential, the second, commercial. The first boss actually said, that I had learned so much, he was willing to sponsor me to take my test even though I hadn't worked for him the required 5 years. Unfortunately, I left him for the commercial company because they promised me more money (which they never held up to). One thing that really sticks out in my memory was when my boss and I were plumbing a new house, and the inspector came by to say that a lav sink failed inspection, because the drain wasn't on a down slope. So, I went back to this house and put my level on it. Here's the set up; for some reason (I didn't do the initial install of the pipe, just connected the sink) the stub out for the sink was on the right side, instead of the back. It was a big cabinet/sink, so the drain was quite long. So, when I put my level on it, it had the proper fall. So, what did I do? I hung out in the house for about 15 minutes (it wasn't sold yet, so no one lived there), then went back and told my boss and inspector, that I corrected it. All the inspector did was said "Ok, thank you". He never did re-inspect. Lol. Now, up here north of you, in Texoma, I have had plenty of clients that have loved my work and have trusted me. I've been asked to do plenty of plumbing jobs. I have turned down some, just because it would have been too involved, but I have taken on easy jobs such as small leaks, fix or replace faucets, fix or replace drains. The main reason I don't do too many plumbing jobs anymore is simply because I just don't want to crawl under houses any more. lol. I'm too old for that (even though, I believe I'm younger than you). But, I have had a couple flippers, that actually pay me well, that has needed new lines run or old lines repaired under their flip houses. It's kind of like, I hate to tell them no, but I really don't want to tell them yes either. lol. Now, if it's a job that requires a permit, or inspection, I flat out tell them no. One time, a flipper told me "Oh, it's ok. I've got a buddy that can pull the permit and sign off the inspection after you're done". I asked, well, why don't you get him to do it. I was told, because that guy didn't have the time, and he was way too expensive. Lol. I still love to do plumbing, but only if I can hire someone else to crawl under houses. Have a good day Roger.

I have been a plumber since I started my apprenticeship at 16. I'm now 74.
It's not an 'easy' trade, it requires a lot of hard work and study.
It only becomes easy when you do it correctly and do it often enough.
My apprenticeship was 5 years consisting of 3 years journeyman plumbing and 2 years advanced plumbing.
In the end, I became a licenced plumber, drainer, gasfitter, LPG installer and roof plumber.
Plumbing regulations here are governed by legislation. They began with by-law 14 long before I started in plumbing. The regulations are now governed by, Plumbing and Drainage Act 2011.
Because our regulations are now a nation wide standard, plumbers can cross over state borders to work. In the past, we couldn't even go to another county because licencing differed from one to another.
Now with national standards, plumbing is standardised countrywide.
The reason for the involvement of the law in plumbing and drainage is the whole community's health depends on plumbers and drainers doing their work in the correct manner. Sewerage must not mix with storm water or town water, everything has to work separately, otherwise people can die.
Generally, handymen do the worst work.
Some plumbers do terrible work as well.
I have seen the results of both.
Our regulations are such that if the work is not performed by a licenced plumber, the regulatory authority will not make a determination on it and insurance companies give it no stock, they turn their backs on unlicensed work.
It is up to the client to ask to see the plumber's licence. I usually tell them to also ask for their driver's licence as well because it has a photo on it, unlike the plumbing licence.
    I show them both.
