Here's a rolling cart for storing lumber, plywood, and other sheet goods in your workshop. I made this to take up as little space as possible, yet hold a lot of wood.

Unfortunately the link to the plans is dead now but from the comments and some details from the video I was able to get enough detail to create my own plans. Finished mine tonight. While the footprint is close to the same as the pile of wood, I can maneuver it and access everything that was in the pile WAY easier. Huge win. Plus it was my first time trying dados with a router so that was a good experience. Overall, love this thing and your videos are very helpful.

Thanks, Steve. I built this in three hours on a Friday night, and I'm not exactly the most skilled woodworker. Any beginner considering tackling this project should go for it.
Two tips: Use six wheels instead of four. Also, you'll end up with triangle scraps from the bracing on one side. Use two of these triangles as braces on the other side to strengthen the sheet goods storage brace. It works perfectly.

I have been following your videos for a couple years now. With this new camera and the added lights your videos look a lot more "professional" or "production" like. Not saying they were bad before but just acknowledging that you have raised the bar. Good job on the quality and as always good job on the content. Thanks for the videos Steve.

I love watching this guy...real world unscripted humorous and practical vids. Refreshing to not have splicing scenes which end with work pieces precut and the real beginner hurdles actually addressed on film throughout the process. Keep up the good and educating videos, as a beginner garage woodworker you have been very usefull!

My shop is a 1 car garage. We built this cart over the last couple days. Building your rolling cart for the planer, router table and a couple other tools over the weekend. This is going to be wonderful for my limited space. I'll be able to roll them out of the shop if I need the room. Thank you so much, for these videos and plans. You have helped me SO much with my kitchen remodel.

Hi Steve, I made the lumber truck soon after you issued the video. This has given me a better storage of the wood and released some space for my chop saw trolley. I regret leaving out the shelving and one divider but it works. The weight on my small casters makes it hard to move and so I will put on larger casters. Thank you. Thanks for posting Steve. I am a disabled Veteran than was in serious need of a hobby that isnt to physically demanding due to being forced into retirement from my injuries. Took your advice after seeing one of your videos about beginning woodworking that said its a great hobby that isnt to demanding physically. My wife and I both love watching your videos by the way. She is great at helping out in the shop and she wants to learn how to make things so its win win for me! I was in need of a better way to store my scrap and project wood besides stashing it under work benches or leaning it in corners. So I built a cart based on your design. Now I know what I have on hand and see a few projects that can be made without a trip to the lumber yard. I had way more wood than I realised and can easily find it now. Thanks again you inspired me into a new hobby and its one the wife approves of!

Hi Steve, John here in Las Vegas. I am a custom woodworker/handyman and I just finished your design of a lumber rack. I made mine 78" long and I wish now I would hvae gone to 84 -88" or so. I do store full size plywood sheets for a while and boy is it ever easier than putting them up over your garage door (like you) like I used to. Next thing I need to make is one of those carts that lifts the sheet up so you can put it on the cutting grid or saw horses without lifting them. My grid (first trial) is 3" strips of OSB boards cut in a torsion box grid style to cut a 4x8 sheet on so you don't have to worry about pieces falling off on the ground. Just cut thru and everything stays put. Should have done it years ago. I get so many great ideas from you guys who actually make the videos. So thanks and keep up the great work. Soon to be is a modified Jay Bates style miter saw station that I am putting my Bosch 8.25" miter saw and a Delta 12" radial arm saw side by side on. I am redoing my dust collection system to a little bigger size and will incorporate that into the station. Again, thanks.

I've been into woodworking a few years now I should say and I remember it was after watching a couple of your older videos that inspired me to do what I do today. After destroying many projects and millions of dollars later I learned to become decent at it. I love your sense of humor on questioning your ability to get a screw in right or lining something up even. Idk how long you've been doing it but I'm sure you've forgotten more than most will know. You've been a inspiration to many and I can say you're one of the greats! Thanks for the wealth of knowledge you shared with the woodworking community. We appreciate it.

Loved the cart so much, very nice solution for my problem.
"Found" myself a big steel undercarriage , about the size I needed, and build myself almost the same cart. Mine is a bit bigger, I used the complete length of the plywood sheets. I love it, every sheet of mdf, plywood, hardboard has it's place now. No more "tears" when I need the bottom sheet in a pile of wood.
    Keep up the good work.

I just finished your lumber cart following your plans. WOW! It's more than I expected. I used 4" casters so it would roll easier and added 1 1/4" to the width of the shelves, still leaving me with 6" depth for sheet storage. It took 3 sheets of 3/4 plywood (with about half sheet left), 2 of AC for the parts that show and one of CD for the shelves and bottom. You have a fantastic Chanel, keep up the good work.

Great lumber cart! I built mine yesterday. Some comments that might help the next person - (1) I used 2.5 sheets of 4x8 & had 2 cut to 48", and one cut to the 30" base on the panel saw at the lumber yard. Just made it easier for me. (2) Mine is on a 2x4 base including a center support. Very solid! (3) Assembling by myself was doable, but another pair of hands would have really helped. (4) This does hold a ton of wood. I could have made it more narrow &/or dedicated more room for sheet goods (5) You may want to vary the width for the cutoff boxes. From as narrow as 6 inches up to 18 inches.

After taking down a wheelchair ramp for a friend of mine, I had a good deal of half inch sheet, and regular lumber. It was all sitting on my carport floor where I was worried about it getting wet. But I saw this video and decided to make myself a version of your storage cart and it worked beautifully. I did end up using six 2" casters instead of four, and i made it wide enough to have ten 1'x1' upright storage bins instead of five. Thank you for the idea, keep up the good work! Ive been a Me-Mo for a while now and I love the videos!

I built one 26 years ago from the necessity to store 30 mahogany veneer plywood sheets and the Mahogany pieces, and also a separate place for the pookey sticks, a stick used for separating sheets for aligning on contact cement. I've had the whole piece clamped to a furniture dolly so I can roll it around. You did a great job! And you can move it around.

Used your concept, personalized it for my needs and to maximize my scrap lumber. I was being buried by scraps too good for landfill or the wood burning stove. And yes, I did toss the unburnable, "what was I thinking when I saved this osb?"
As you enter your "elderly " years, you will develop a gift for working smarter.
But based on the way you handled the cart on your pickup, you may not need to worry about it...

Great concept. Great plans! This project takes two and a half sheets of plywood. For the half sheet that supports plywood cutoffs, I used 1/2" and connected the bottom with pocket screws. I'm going to park it along the garage door to take advantage of it's so-called un-useable wall space and scoot it out of the way when I need to use the door.

Awesome job of explaining the reasoning behind your design as well as assembly. I've seen many similar design examples, but none of them addressed assembly or compact size.
Love the way you keep things basic, practicle and fun in your videos. I may be an engineer by day, but on the weekends I'm a smiple 'handy-man hack" with wood. Thanks for the laughs and the friendly motivation to try our hand at having fun.

  • @zone3adk872

I made mine a few years ago and it works great. 2 things I changed. 1) I built the base of 2x4 framework and glad I did. 2) After the fact, I went back and put a support pc under each shelf on the non-dado side. The glue and screw wasn’t enough when I overloaded it.
Also, I am going to put a handle on each side. When I have a lot of 8 footers on it, it is tough to maneuver.
Revisited this because I just emptied it and will reload in prio order and throw out what doesn’t fit. After cleaning up the mice nests and poop..,
Use very good casters with brakes. If you build this right, you’ll have it forever. Spend the money.

I wish I had never seen this video Steve... I have 4 caster wheels that have been kicking around in my shop and my scrap wood situation is a little worse than yours (was). Now I have to build one of these brilliant storage carts. There are so many other things that I want to build however. I'm getting tired of building things before I can build the things that I need to build in order to build things tha I want to build. Guess I better get off the computer and build this....

Man I know that struggle! I spend more time building my shop than using my shop to build!

      Did you build the things?

It's so true and I thought I was alone in the struggle. (No one fights alone. lol) I thought I could bang out a killer prototype right quick, get to selling them, then upgrade my space as I went. Problems with that theory 1) Wife fussing about general mess the basement has become 2) more fussing about dust tracked through house 3) Lack of organization which costs time in the long run.

You're not alone. I inherited some old power saws from my FIL's wood shop that needed some 'love' so I built dust collection housing for them along with new table top and stand for the RAS then started building a French cleat system near my workbench then figured out I needed more lighting and outlets on the workbench then.......... So in 7 months of retirement I haven't really even gotten my shop sorted out yet. But I enjoy the time working at it!

This will be perfect for my new shop. I'll have a seldom-used garage door that will be a perfect place to scoot this rack. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the realization that I too never keep a full sheet of plywood around. I built the cart a couple of months ago. Nice idea and techniques.

I made this! I recommend a couple holes just to let water or dust or dirt out of the floor of each section.

Steve, the lumber rack is a great idea. I've been struggling with what o do in my shop. I never even thought about making it mobile. Great design too. I'm making one right away. Thanks, Chuck

Built one, but had to shave off 5" to fit the garage. 2.5 less wide on compartments and 2.5 less wide on shelves. Thanks for the plan!
