Build a Compact Lumber Storage Cart from a Single Sheet of Plywood

- In this video, I’ll show you how to build a compact lumber storage cart made from a single sheet of plywood. It has a small footprint of 24 x 28 so it won’t take up too much room in the workshop. With 6 vertical cubbies for wood storage plus 2 horizontal slots that can be fitted with plastic bins or used as is.
BONUS! At the end of the video I build an extra side compartment that can be made with the remaining plywood offcuts. Mounted with pocket screws for easy removal (or addition) when needs change in the future. Great add-on for storing offcuts from sheet goods. Instructions for this are included in the plans. Thank you very much.
The cart is great but the routing jig alone is worth everything. That’s brilliant!!!
Got your plans a year ago-just now starting the build. Got everything cut up, now just waiting for the router bit to come from Amazon tomorrow to cut the dadoes and assemble. Very excited-it feels like waiting for Santa. Your plans are detailed and easy for a beginner like me to follow, and I LOVE your videos, especially the occasional snafu and how you fix it. Thank you, and keep up the great work!
Finally, someone had great ideas on not gluing cabinets for renovations or replacement which impossible with gluing. Great Job.
Awesome tools you have.
OMG that's freakin' awesome! everything you've build in that shop is gorgeous! I think I'm tearing up with envy.
It’s good watch when the work is done with love!
Great vid (as always)
Thanks, appreciate it!
Marie,😀 is so nice to see you again.
All the best to you. 🤗
Great addition to any shop - I'll start mine now. Thanks for the detailed video.
Well, this is timely! I've annexed off a chunk of my shop for my wife to store gardening supplies and this cart will be perfect for my smaller space. Thanks!
Great smaller version, thank you for sharing your awesome project with us today from Henrico County Virginia
Very timely, this is something I desperately need and don’t have a lot of space, so this may be the answer, thanks! 👍
Very nice...
Thanks!
Cracking build Marie and now you have more wood to play with, now that you have removed the old one ready for dismantling into a new project.
Stay Safe,
Barry (ENG)
Sold it to one lucky fellow, so it will live on 😊
this is the perfect size lumber cart for my small workshop. thanks!
"I don't know why but I hang on to every little scrap of wood", rarely has something resonated so deeply with me. Every, single, little scrap. I've been thinking about it a lot, and I think woodworkers have a respect for wood, that even though it does literally grow on trees, it isn't infinite, and we should cherish every piece we get to work with. Hanging on to scraps feels less wasteful, more sustainable, and treats each piece with more respect. Also, it means you have pieces that are just waiting to be used
Bravo!
Thank you!
Love this design
Thanks, happy to hear that!
I'm sitting in my garage needing this exact cart. Thank you so much for the plans and the great instruction video. I'm sure it will take me the whole weekend, but it will sure be worth the time! Guytex...
Thanks. Great Job 👍
Nice job!
The small storage bins beneath are genius!
it is nice cart. thank you.
I just finished building this today. I really liked the plans, simple to follow. My plywood wasn’t as nice, but it works. The one thing I want to add is a spot to keep dowel rod on the side. I would suggest that if you are going to build this, do it some place with some room. My basement shop was pretty tight, but I did it. Thanks for a great design for a small shop!
Love the jig! I've been looking for a quick and easy jig for this type of datto work.
Simple, compact, functional and looks good too.
I’m a fan.
Love that side attachment!
Love this! Beautiful grain on that plywood and it's the perfect mama bear size 🙂 I think this will be my first project.
I enjoyed the video and bought the plan. The plan is very detailed and easy to follow. I built the “sidecar” on the back of the cart to permit storage of taller pieces.
Wow! What a fantastic storage unit. Thank you for sharing
Nice job on the lumber storage cart Marie! Thanks for sharing the video with us!💖👍😎JP
Great project. I have built it without the dividers with half an inch plywood. It is what I've needed for all my wood laying around. Thank you.
Nice video, clear instructions. Cart is a space saver! You know wood scraps multiply when stored together. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Bought the plan, saving up for the plywood.
Built it more or less to this and fits quite a lot. A 2 hour project that cleaned up the shop quite a bit. Cheers for the inspiration!
0:16 same here!
🙂
Great cart! Footprint is a little big for my space but I love the no-nonsense approach to your video production.
I like a lot about this cart. I plan to store hardwood bits in one plastic bin and soft/plywood in the other. wood that doesn't fit and is less desirable will go in my smokeless fire pit. I'll buy the plan to support another woman woodworker.
Sweet!
Nice router guide/jig! I like it
Thanks a bunch! Beats the older cart, fer sure!
Great idea Marie, thank you.
Gave you an up vote for this thought. Skip the glue. Screws are sufficient and it leaves open the option to reuse the lumber in the future
Great! Thanks for your instruction! It's time to clean up.
Very cool design!! Well done.
This is perfect for my shop
Just completed the cart you designed. Very impressed with the clarity of the plans. They were very easy to understand. Thank you.
Even with the add on side cart it takes up so much less room. Amazing how all the stuff on the old cart fit in the new one. I have a sheet of plywood that I keep storing. Just need to use it!!!
Nice job, enjoyed watching.
Love it! If I ever change my workshop around again (if...HA...who am I kidding), your new lumber cart will definitely be kept in mind. Great job as always.
Laugh now, but you know it inevitably always happens!
Slick! I build the original cart, but have the same issue in terms of space, etc., so time to build your new version. As always, great ideas and execution. Thanks
Like it, I already have a large plywood rack but don’t have a great solution for small cut offs, hardwood scrap etc. the slots for plastic bins set this one apart from the other RUclips racks. Given the craftsman tools and Princess Auto reference I figured you were a fellow Canadian then I saw the channel name 😉. Greetings and thanks from Saskatchewan
Nice! I built your original lumber cart a few years ago and I am also realizing how much space it actually takes up. I may need to downsize to this new one as well. Thanks, Marie!
Wow -- what a transformation. Isn't it interesting how one learns to economize over time. Really smart and functional design. Love your videos -- always informative and a pleasure to watch. Great audio editing on driving the screws -- fun to listen to. And thanks for the great router tips!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Really nice, Marie. Now you have additional wood from the old cart, too.
Bill
Sold it to a happy new owner who will care for it 😉
i like that tray thingy at the bottom, handy
Totally need to build this smaller cart. Love the old full sized one but space is always an issue.
Very nice build!!
you are absolutely amazing!! I just started carpentry, I dont have all the amzing power machinery you have, just a dewalt drill...Cheap mini circular saw (that am scared to death of & now learing to use .... A miter saw am also scared of🤣 but am still trying. I build a shou sugi ban table that has a lot of faults.....no matter how much i measure and use levelers nothing is straight smh....... but i have hope!!! I wish your videos showed you making the same stuff with basic tools along with measurement. But i do learn still from you thank you🙏
Good
brilliant job, well done
Love the new cart! I built a version of you old cart ages ago, and I also found it taking up a lot of space. I like this new version, and may have to update my shop!
Awesome! Thank you!
So nice looking. Awesome job!
Another fantabulous job! 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
No size or amount of wood is scrap. As you've very nicely proved in this presentation. I just wish they would be referred to as Off-cuts. Rant over, brilliant project by a very brilliant presenter. Please keep them coming.
Great design! I have a compact shop and this is what I need!
Good work!! My favorite woodworker!!
This cart is awesome, I was amazed at how much it holds. Gained some valuable floor space for more stuff!
Been meaning to build a lumber cart, was going to build a bigger one based on April Wilkerson or Steve Ramsey builds, but honestly given the small size of my shop I think this one looks perfect! Thanks!
Awesome, glad you like it!
Looks great! I should build a few of these.
Awesome, definitely a great addition to any workspace 👍
Nice work as always!
Hello Montreal! I enjoyed watching this vid. My shop is one half of a 2 car garage. I've had wood scattered everywhere that I had to address. Your cart was too big for the space I had for one but adapted your design to make one that works for me. Thanks!
This is great! I love how tidy you are 😍. Congrats for the work. It’s inspiring. Your tools are also very useful. Keep uploading videos 😉
Thanks! Will do 👍
Nice solution!
Love your work. So near and organized. This is my next project.
Merci pour cette mise à jour.
Love it, need to build one for my new shop but first the outfeed table. I'm so excited
Enjoy the builds!
@@DIYMontreal Thanks, I hope haha
I found what helped with the amount of scraps I accumulated was to buy a wood fired pizza oven. Good vidio Thanks
Haha 😄 love the idea
Great idea! I need similar.
I'm only 20seconds into the video, but first impression is.. your current lumber cart pretty darn good already! Can't wait to see what you come up with :)
Ha thanks! Totally loved that cart and it served me well, but it was time to reclaim some floor space in my single car garage shop. Every square foot is precious!
"I don't know why but I hold on to every single little piece of scrap wood I have" That's not a problem for woodworkers more of a trait.
My thoughts exactly! lol
You Make some cool stuff I’m making a cart for scrap wood modified alittle ,alittle Wider and I put the sheet goods in back but I love your ideas Andy best of any body
Very nice! I built your larger lumber cart a while back and have been very pleased with it. I made a few modifications including building a long "sidecar" on the far side of the horizontal shelves, which I use for dado storage.
Nice! Nothing wrong with the old design. Will miss it... but happy to have reclaimed some space in the shop.
I’ve just completed my own cart by following your excellent plans. It looks great and it has tidied up my workshop by storing loads of spare lumber which has been lying around and getting in the way for too long. Thank you so much. I’m looking forward to trying another one of your projects. Thank you once again. Peter
I watched this a year ago. I think this is the cart I need to build. The one I have is too big and not very mobile. It’s too heavy for me to move and I can’t get to the sheet good on it. 2024 is my year for organization. It’s definitely time. JUST bought the plans.
Great video! The quality of your editing has improved significantly over time. Very well done!
Thanks appreciate it!
Amazing! I've been searching for a good lumber cart that fits my needs and this is great! Thank you for the wonderful video.
So glad it helped. Thank you!
muy buena idea...
Just made one for myself, exactly like yours, great video, great cart!
Nice!
Great video and amazing project🥰
Very nice!
Enjoyed the video and cart turned out really nice! I'm sure it will be very useful.
Your jigs are FANTASTIC!!!
Awesome work!
Fantastic work, Marie! Nicely done!!! 😃
I need to make something like that as well! As soon as it gets cold enough here in Brazil, so I can work in my workshop, I'm going to buy your plans! 😃
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
One lesson learned: if I’m going to use plastic trays, I buy them first. Size openings to ensure they fit. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely! Bought these bins first. Left a link to these exact ones in the description for anyone who plans to build this.
Robertson head screws, if the channel name didnt give it away, those screws would have. Very nice work. Subscribed.
You are great at what you do 😂
