A really simple salad for you to try. Iceberg lettuce shredded, cucumber peeled and chopped. A sweet apple peeled, cored, chopped. Mayo with pepper and salt. Give it an hour in the fridge before eating.

When I was growing up, cutting the cabbage for slaw--for six people-- was one of my designated jobs. Now, 60 years later, I buy a bag of already shredded cabbage and carrots, and just make the dressing. The slaw is just as good, but I miss the company.

How funny! That’s what I made today! I woke up and made banana bread and tonight we ate coleslaw and empanadas. Nice coincidence!

Well done you !! Everytime you make it you'll probably make little tweaks until you get to the magic rock solid recipe. You're getting to be a grand cook with the fresh veggies

Well, what can i say? I have to applaud you as you're really going for it with trying to make things you've never made before. It seems the part time hours are having a knock on effect with you having more time to have a go at things, thats a massive positive outcome. Yes! Much better making your own coleslaw than shop bought.👍

Lovely,Karen. I would eat this so quickly!
I sometimes add fresh broccoli, and I like to use red cabbage. I make the dressing with mayo, the best vinegar I have, (Raspberry is wonderful!), celery seed, paprika and a little sugar or stevia. I keep the dressing on the side to mix in as we use it to keep it from getting limp.

I shall write down that dressing recipe. And the coleslaw looks wonderful. You could add a bit of sugar if it doesn't sweeten up.

Excellent recipe idea thank you. Don't throw away the outer leaves of the cabbage though, they've great to put into a Chinese style stir fry (same with any cauliflower leaves too).

I cant do the shredding these days due to arthritis in my hands - so just a tip for those with less strong hands - use a food processor. The other day i was making celeriac mash from a HUGE celeriac and sighed at the thought of all that mashing by hand and then the light dawned - use the food processor! Worked a treat folks! Both celariac and carrot-and-swede ( turnip - the orange ones) freeze well btw. And this is a great method of making quantities of them!

My mom used mayonnaise. Or salad dressing. With cream or milk. Salt and pepper. Sugar and mustard. Depending on if we were having a sweet salad or not. Coleslaw had a tiny bit of sugar. Shrimp salad has more sugar for my mom's recipes. No sugar in the same dressing made for a lettuce salad. All of our dressings were made at home. I remember when Ranch happened oh my goodness sour cream with a mix we poured in oh it was heavenly. And it still is. We also had the oil and vinegar on our table I grew up with it it was odd when the family grew up and moved out and it was no longer on the table and the leaf came out of the table. And everybody that was left in the house just grabbed a snack when they to eat.

That's a fine salad. My favourite coleslaw is cabbage, carrot, onions with finely chopped pickled cucumbers, and the dressing made with mayo, mustard and a little dill vinegar from the cucumbers.

Yum, i love coleslaw. I hate trying to make the cabbage thin enough and recently found a very wide veg peeler and it is fantastic making it so simple to get a fine shred in seconds. 😊happy days

I prefer home made Coleslaw because you can adapt it to your own preference . We grate the carrots from the bottom up not lengthways same as cabbage. We use scallions too. For example Heron sold Avocado Mayonaisse for 59 pence each or £1 for two which we used up as Coleslaw. And finer Coleslaw tastes much better. Home made every time.

I’d have used what was left in the smaller mayo jar (shake it up with the vinegar if needs be) and just added some more from the new one - cuz you just KNOW you’re going to end up with several half-empty jars if you don’t..! I like a bit of creamed horseradish in my coleslaw, and I sometimes cover the veg in boiling water to blanch it off - makes it slightly softer and the coleslaw creamier, somehow. I dry it in the salad spinner before mixing with the dressing. And yes, a tiny bit of sugar or honey will just take the sharpness out of it.

When I make coleslaw I use a savoy cabbage and add a dash of maple syrup to the mayo dressing which takes away the sharpness of the vinegar
