This is such an interesting dynamic. You'd think since they come from the same era, became popular around the same time, and even toured together that their aesthetic would at least be somewhat aligned. Jimmy Eat World has always been a really authentic working band, always touring, always respected and always putting out killer albums, and I think that comes from maintaining that hands-on, DIY approach (even thru the major labels). This was around 2007-08, I had a songwriting publishing deal and I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to write and record a song with Justin. I didn't get to spend much time with him, but he was a nice dude and had a lot of energy.... probably as you'd expect. I remember coming into the studio and he had a part he was already showing the producer and then we wrestled it all into a decent song. The song turned out ok, and we didn't become best friends, but he complimented me on my Arrested Development shirt and I forever get to say that one of my favorite singers sang a chorus I wrote.
Constructive feedback for Jim. Loved the interview and I did enjoy hearing about your process and your story. However, I think the quality of the podcast would be better if you spent more time asking the guest questions and letting them speak. Like in this interview it felt like 50/50 or sometimes even you talked more. Maybe make it 70/30 in favor of the guest and it’s perfect. Keep it up I’m really looking forward to future episodes. May I suggest Matt Skiba as a guest - not for his work in Blink, but for his Alkaline Trio. He really is a phenomenal songwriter and lyricist and I and I’m dying to learn about his process for years.

I'm a sober (now) artist, I get it , I've struggled with heroin addiction, brought on by having RA and Lupus and being on pills since I was a kid. I subscribed to the belief that I needed to create and even surmount my wounds, then cauterize it and open them again. It was a gnarly time, lost my thumb, using a soldering iron when I was loaded. Their tail end of the conversation reminded me of something a customer told me when I worked at an online retialer for musical equipment. He said "With modern technology, anyone at any time, can record any type of music, and release to to the masses. The only down side is that anyone at any time, can record any type of music, and release to to the masses." which I thought was hilarious at the time, but realize he's right. No one has any excuses any more as to why they don't record their music ideas. I mean most of the bands I grew up with are now doing their own thing in a personal studio and doing some really great things.
As an artist/designer my attitude is always make whatever you feel like then some time in the future you can go back and categorise it later. There is always going to be a common thread through different pieces you pick up on retrospectively, not necessarily in the moment. Same goes for songs, trying to limit yourself to be "on brand" is the quickest way to creative jail (do not collect $200.)
This was such a beautiful well-articulated conversation between two extremely talented musicians. I love how humble and thoughtful you both were with each topic, I feel grateful to have watched this! I’ve been a huge fan of blink for years now, and with their current comeback and the after math of Mark’s health scare, this was a very inspiring video to watch. Travis is my favorite because I’m a drummer, but I’ve always had this strange soft spot for Mark - you can just tell he loves music and being creative, and he seems so down to earth despite being such an influential rock star. Great video!
Jim! This is great! I'm so excited you're doing this. A. My favorite two rock artists of all-time chatting in the first episode?? Are you kidding? B. I'm a hobby song writer myself. Super stoked to see more of these vids.
God damn, thats exactly where the pivotal shift in sound came. Definitely liked the songs they wrote before studio way more. Amazing chat! Both such amazing artists
11:45 this comment about reviewing voice notes is spot on. I wish we could record thoughts, because recording complex song structure ideas when they arrive is WILDLY difficult to articulate via voice into a voice memo app or recorder!
That was absolutely Brilliant! I can totally agree with the Handwriting thing Im the same thanks so much Mark & Jim...look forward to seeing the next episode!
Thanks Jim & Mark. I loved this conversation. So refreshing hearing two of my favourite artists talk about the creative songwriting process. It also gave us mere mortal fans a bit of a sneak peek behind the curtain of the more common press interviews, which always cover the same topics and questions. This was so real and genuine. Thanks for creating this and I look forward to future episodes. I'd love to hear similar episodes with Tom Delonge and Travis Barker, just because I'm a massive Blink fan. I'm busy getting back into recording my next album and this interview inspired me tremendously. Much love from Cape Town, South Africa.
I've always wanted Jimmy Eat World to release an experimental heavy metal album. I've heard rumors that they started as a Metallica cover band. Either way I will be a fan forever.
Saw Mark in a magazine article and that page I had on my wall. He said his favourite band was Jimmy Eat World and then I started listening and that’s how it happened! Saw The Middle on Much Music and was hooked. First song I ever saw of you guys first video after getting that article. Jimmy Eat World was high school for me. All of high school I would listen to Bleed American over and over again and I’m Canadian 😂
Jim: "If you're not experiencing some level of crippling self-doubt, you're just not doing it right" was sooooo on point for me. I found it extremely encouraging-- Although I write poetry, not music (I've dabbled with writing lyrics to a pre-existing beat/melody, though). Keep on rockin' and thank you for focusing on the opportunities and not what's been taken away. These videos/podcasts are adding so much to the world that we need right now. Thanks to Jim & Mark for taking time to bless us with your infinite wisdom and ageless good looks. ❤️

Mark looks like the crazy old guy that yells at you to get off his lawn. lol

Been rocking the signature Tele for last few years, love it!
So sad that we couldn’t see you play in the uk last month but I’d love to see more episodes of this podcast.
Loved it!!! Please bring Mark back on again
One of my most cherished memories is going to Selma TX from Austin to see you guys play with Blink. Magical show.
my adolescence was filled with Blink 182 and Jimmy Eat World. makes me extra happy that two of my favourite bands are BFFs ♥
This was AWESOME. I could listen to y'all talk all day.
Bought your signature Jim! Love playing and recording with it!
10:50 - The Voice inside my yeeeaaad!
I love the Aphex Twin reference and the fact that Mark gets it. I have like 500 songs started that have modified Kemper amp profiles as names…
That was absolutely Brilliant! I can totally agree with the Handwriting thing Im the same thanks so much Mark & Jim...look forward to seeing the next episode!
Jim, you’re great I’m glad you’re starting a podcast. And what a first guest, I could listen to old blink for hours!
This is so cool. 2 of my absolute biggest influences talking about their creative processes is crazy. For me this is heaven.
Harharhar
thanks for this conversation! great interview jim, you shred in your own way
Saw Mark in a magazine article and that page I had on my wall.
I love how genuine JA is, hes always at local shows in Phx and the dude is such a gem to the scene.
This was fantastic! Tons of great music and life advice! Love you guys and your music!
This is the interview/ podcast that we all needed. Thank you my good sir!
Ahhhh! Loved this! It’s always fascinating to me to see a small glimpse of another artists mind and thought process. Can’t wait for the next one!
I got a DUI leaving a music festival at the Santa Barbara bowl early because I didn't like the headliner - Jimmy Eat World. I was there for Rise Against, so Jimmy wasn't in my wheelhouse at the time. Really enjoyed this video, will be checking out more.
Simply...thank you. I appreciate the process and glad that someone else is also interested in knowing people’s thoughts process when creating. This is so great. Plus I’ve been rocking with you since before there was a 20 in front of the year.
It's amazing how Jim continues to look very young over the years xd
